Mister @Cloutier keeping the tradition alive by playing a memorable closing set, ending our yearly gathering on a high note. Join us in 2024
What did you do with your lockdown holiday? I was intending to learn a language and ended up just gaining a bunch of weight. Our guest this week - Detroit native Eric Cloutier - was a bit more productive than that - he embarked upon a project to reacquaint himself with a record collection that he'd been adding to for over 20 years, which ended up being broadcast to the world in a series of ten mixes entitled The Arsonist & The Architect. I highly recommend checking out those 20 hours of mixes, in addition to the two that you're going to spend on this week's episode - they are collectively a real example of a top DJ exploring a range of styles in a highly skillful manner. We discuss the project in the conversation, in addition to more prosaic matters such as the politics of the Detroit music scene, the inspirational nature of Berlin, and attempting to tease out the positive developments in the wider dance scene since the pandemic. This was a highly enjoyable conversation with someone who I know well socially, but provided me with a lot to chew on and a lot to think about. You're going to enjoy it too!As hinted at last week, we are celebrating 20 years of Hotflush Recordings this year. I started the label in 2003, so that's where we are. Already out is a collaborative single I produced with last week's guest, Distance... that's called Opposites and you can listen to that here. This Friday, a mix entitled 'Hotflush Origins' will be dropping across all platforms. You can probably guess what kind of thing that's going to be, but be sure to check it out - it's a mix I'm really happy with. And going forward over the next few weeks there will be a series of more singles and mixes - five singles in total, and four mixes. All the info for that can be found at hf20.news - there will be regular updates there, so keep hitting F5. Finally, there will be a run of shows announced this week so keep an eye out for that. If your city isn't included then fear not - there will be more shows across the world throughout the year!Patrons will be guest-listed up on request, so don't hesitate to reach out on that. It's gonna be a lot of fun and I hope to see you all for a dance at some stage before the year is out. If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! We'd be honoured and extremely grateful for your contribution to developing the show. Plus there's a private area......in the Hotflush Discord ServerListen to all the music discussed on the show via the Not A Diving Podcast Spotify playlistFor more links and other info visit the official Scuba websiteFollow Scuba: twitter instagram bandcamp

Not one to shout too loud or make a scene, Eric Cloutier is a resilient disc jockey and producer who perhaps represents techno and its truth in the most humanistic and humble of senses. For many years he has worked tirelessly perfecting his craft and for anyone who has witnessed him dj, they will know that the intricacy, dedication and commitment is meticulous. His sets are free roaming, fast paced and wild. They are designed to encourage as much provocative thought as they are to move the feet and sound best played loudly beneath the cloak of darkness. This special mix which he has recorded for us is no exception to that. A pensive, beat juggling affair which blurs the lines between techno, IDM and dub. It's a real treat and we are humbled and delighted to be able to feature him as part of our Ransom Note mix series.

Eric Cloutier shares the inspiration for this mix: "It's impossible to fully describe the importance of Theorem in my life. Upon first hearing the “Nano” album I was immediately sold on his sound. Moving artfully between psychedelic, dub and chill varietals of techno, the picture he painted on this full length on Plus8 blew my mind…and honestly still does. Fast forward to the “Mantra One” EP, and I knew this wasn't a fluke but a revolution of a genre. Almost like clockwork, singles on a sub label of M_nus started dropping; I was indoctrinated in to Theorem's sound 100% at this point. Beautiful, patient, delicate, unique, and timeless - Theorem's records, both solo and with a handful of equally amazing friends, such as Stewart Walker, Sutekh, and Swayzak, are at once undefinable and unquestionably from one defining point in electronic music history. I've been fortunate enough to stay friends with Theorem for well over a decade, and he's blessed me with a trove of unreleased transmissions I've never felt comfortable putting to a recording until now. Without this music I honestly don't know where my techno life would have taken me, but I am forever indebted to Theorem for what he unintentionally did to a random connoisseur back home in Detroit. 01. Eric Cloutier Opens Up About His Past Life as an Internet Troll The Detroit-Berlin techno traveler now makes musical waves. Like many DJs of his generation, Eric Cloutier came out of the 90s Detroit rave scene and migrated east. He first went to New York, where he became a resident at influential club night The Bunker, and then made the pilgrimage to Berlin, and currently uses that city as a home base for a growing calendar of international DJ gigs. The German city also acts as inspiration towards his fledgling production career, which culminates this month in his first full EP, Heuristic, on his own Palinioa label. The record encapsulates Cloutier's DJ sound that's made him a fan favorite in places across the world: heady psychedelics secured by a locked-in techno groove. Cloutier recently sat down with Rave Curious at his flat in Berlin on a late Sunday night/early Monday morning to talk about his current life as a traveling DJ, as well as his past in the Detroit techno scene, where in addition spinning music he spent years as a moderator on the legendary Detroitluv message board, where the policy was "If you wanna start that drama, you made that bed."

DJ Nobu has long been Japan's best kept secret, but lately it feels like the cat is well out of the bag as his global touring schedule fills up for 2016. Nobu has been producing the legendary Future Terror parties in Japan since 2001 and launched his Bitta label in 2012. More than anything though, he is known for his completely unpredictable yet always mind-melting DJ sets. We were totally floored by both his prime-time set at The Bunker in Tokyo and his opening set at The Bunker in Osaka in September, 2015. He will be playing the closing set of The Bunker NY takeover of Berghain in February, making his North American debut at The Bunker in Brooklyn in March, in addition to playing alongside The Bunker resident Eric Cloutier at Smart Bar in Chicago. Few DJs demonstrate the depth of vision that seems to come naturally to Nobu.

In her hometown of Sydney, Trinity is renowned for supporting Australian artists through her parties, the long running and now defunct Loosekaboose event and in more recent times 4our, which has carved a niche in Sydney’s underground scene by showcasing the likes of Eli Verviene and Steffi. We're excited to be celebrating our 100th podcast today, with the one and only Magda Bytnerowicz! Magda is, without a doubt, one of Sydney's finest DJs. She runs an extremely successful event series, 4our (pronounced "four") alongside musical partner Trinity, which showcases local and international talent in intimate warehouse spaces. Over the past couple of years 4our have delivered the likes of Steffi, Eric Cloutier, Eli Verveine, XDB & Mareena, to Sydney-siders. The quote from Magda's official bio reads: "Expect a diverse selection of old house and new techno (and vice versa) as well as a smattering of disco in her DJ sets, keeping you locked to the dance floor".... and she has not let us down with this mix. Magda kicks things off with some beautiful deep house sounds, including one of our all time favourite OB Ignitt tracks. The mix slowly builds without notice, until you find yourself on a virtual dancefloor appreciating the subtle acid and techno flavours. Before she's done though, Magda closes out with with some disco, as piano keys and guitar licks sweep over you like a rush of emotion. A true musical journey, in every sense of the word. We urge you to stick your headphones on and find a quiet space in a darkened room to appreciate Magda Bytnerowicz... Full tracklisting can be found on SoundCloud: http://bit.ly/100-Magda-Bytnerowicz
Recorded live at The Bunker on October 26, 2007, when Eric opened for Frivolous. A recent transplant from Detroit, he is already making his mark on the NYC techno community with amazing sets like this.
ERIC CLOUTIER (The Bunker | TANSTAAFL | Down || Berlin) Born and bred in Michigan, and currently based in Berlin, Eric Cloutier is one of a new generation of American DJs bridging the gap between dance music's past and its future. His sets have a sprawling depth and sophistication that fuses the brooding intensity of tripping techno with the mechanic funk of contemporary house.Cloutier started spinning records in 1996, quickly establishing himself in Detroit's competitive local scene, holding down residencies at The Necto and prominent afterhoursspot The Works. This led to a job booking Oslo, where he brought the likes of Richie Hawtin, Luciano and Michael Mayer to town, as well as handing out residencies to local legends Three Chairs and Stacey Pullen. In 2006, Cloutier made the jump to New York and quickly established himself, earning a residency at the premiere monthly techno night The Bunker and midweek soiree Den ofThieves. He's also begun his own night, Down, in which he often stretches out to play lengthy sets that showcase his range, effortlessly threading together deeper shades of house and dubinfused techno. Word has been spreading too: 2009 saw Cloutier recording two mixes for the mnml ssgs podcast series, beginning to work in the studio for the first time on his own material, making his European DJing debut and getting tapped to play at Japan's renowned Labyrinth Festival. That latter honor may be the most telling of all: Only a select few are asked to spin at Labyrinth. (It's the provenance of studious selectors like Daniel Bell, Donato Dozzy and Peter Van Hoesen.) To not only spin in their company, but to have ably held his own should tell you all you need to know about Eric Cloutier: He's a DJ for whom quality—above all else—is the watchword.
A prophet without a vision. A song without a melody. A deejay without a hype. We welcome: @juhokahilainen, a Finnish Dj and producer who started his career by pushing techno tracks back in the nineties. Next to being a journalist and family man, Juho has had limited time devote to his passion for music. But despite this he has put out some releases on labels like BPitch Control, Prologue and M_Rec Ltd. He has also produced under his own label HYV, a label that concentrates on strictly “raw” music with machines like TR-909, TR-808, TR-606 and SH-101. Well that’s a lot said about the past, what about the present? Juho is currently working on his secont M_Rec release hopefully to be released vary soon. So grab your copy as soon as it hits the record shop. Also he working and releasing a second HYV featuring not only himself, but collaboration with Juho and his friend. We are truly thankful that we have the opportunity to broadcast this mix and would like to say that it reflects a warmth and soul that has been put into the making of this set. It consists of some new and old tracks witch is matched in good harmony. There’s nothing else to do but enjoy. Track list: 01. Claude Young presents Twine: Untitled (Surface, SF005) 02. UK-based DJ, producer and record label head, Owen Howells, is currently touring Australia with upcoming gigs in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. Regarded as “part Aussie”, Howells grew up on our beautiful shores throughout most of his teen years. Owen’s record label Shades Recordings (formerly Shades of Grey) is described as “forward thinking music with its foundations set in the past”. Shades has garnered support from the likes of Mary Anne-Hobbs, Kerri Chandler, MANDY, Gavin Herlihy, Luke Solomon and George Fitzgerald right through to some of techno’s finest innovators and purists such as Eric Cloutier, Voigtmann & Bruno. Originally, Shades of Grey was an event in Brixton between Howells and a bunch of pals, which morphed into a record label after years of hard work. The concept of this event continued into their record label, which meant they were not bounded by any one genre. This allowed them to explore techno, house and any other electronic music genre that dealt in low-end bass. When he’s not busy in the studio, you’ll likely find Howell’s digging for rare grooves, as he’s a self-confessed vinyl junkie. Already toured Czech Republic, Malta, Berlin and North America, Owen is off to Japan after his Australian tour. Next Saturday, 6th September 2013, starting from 2pm, you can catch Owen playing at We’rehaus at Sydney’s Red Bull HQ in Alexandria.
