BATMAN TO BRUCE LEE: George Fitzgerald's Martial Arts Journey George Fitzgerald: A Martial Arts Journey from Batman to Bruce Lee In our latest podcast episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with George Fitzgerald, a seasoned martial artist whose journey is nothing short of inspiring. From his early days of being inspired by Batman and Bruce Lee to mastering multiple martial arts disciplines, George's story is a testament to passion, dedication, and the eternal quest for mastery. Andrew Staton asks the questions; George's journey into martial arts began at a very young age. "From the age of four I've been a Batman fan and I used to see Batman in the comics doing this weird stuff called karate jiu jitsu," he recalls. The influence of iconic figures like Elvis Presley and Bruce Lee further fueled this early fascination with martial arts. At the age of twelve, after watching Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury," George knew that martial arts was his path in life. Over the years, George has trained in various martial arts disciplines, including judo, aikido, Wing Chun, Muay Thai, and Russian Sambo, among others. His dedication to martial arts is evident in his relentless pursuit of knowledge and mastery. "I just want to be the best martial artist I can be, so that then I can help anyone I teach to be the best martial artist they can be," he explains. One of the key philosophies that George holds dear is the effectiveness of martial arts in self-defence. "My number one premise of doing a martial art is, is this effective in self defence?" he states. This focus on practicality and real-world application has guided his training and teaching methods throughout his career. George's journey is also marked by his encounters with legendary martial artists such as Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, and Chuck Norris. His relationship with Joe Lewis, in particular, left a lasting impact. "Bruce Lee was the greatest martial arts teacher he ever knew, without a doubt," George shares, reflecting on Joe's admiration for Bruce Lee. Despite his extensive experience and numerous accolades, George remains humble and refers to himself as the "eternal white belt." This mindset of continuous learning and growth is what keeps him motivated and passionate about martial arts. "Even now, I'm kind of getting all animated. That's why I can't actually put my finger on what it is. It just makes me feel like, you know, let's get up and train now," he says with enthusiasm. As George continues to train and teach, he remains a beacon of inspiration for martial artists around the world. His story is a reminder that martial arts is not just about physical prowess but also about cultivating a warrior spirit and a lifelong commitment to self-improvement. SIFU George Fitzgerald is the former President, Founder & Master Instructor of the Tang Lung Combat Academy from 1989 – 2012. Among his many credentials, he is a qualified instructor under THREE of Bruce Lee's very best students! He has been studying and practicing formal Martial Arts for the last 50 years, starting in 1973 with Judo at age eleven. But his real introduction to the ‘fighting arts' was from the age of seven in the form of boxing and self-defence ‘tips' from his father – Bill Fitzgerald, a man who was definitely no stranger to ‘street survival' – in fact, he was known to many simply as ‘The Bouncer!' The track can be found on FitzGerald's most recent EP Not As I, out now via Domino Records's imprint label, Double Six. “Collaborating with SYML on this EP was a real joy.” Fitzgerald says in a press release. “I actually reached out to him a few years ago to see if he was interested in writing together. He's an amazing lyricist and has a distinctive vocal tone, and I felt it would match my music really beautifully. Still, it took me quite a while to get to a place where I could finish the track, but sometimes you just have to let things take their course and not force them. Born in Niort, France he started playing drums at age 14 before making a move to London to graduate from the London College of Music with a Popular Music Performance degree. Since then he has juggled a drumming career playing and recording for the likes of George Fitzgerald, Alice Russell, Joey Negro, Odyssey and many more, whilst maintaining a hectic schedule as DJ and electronic music producer GIOM with over 100 remixes and 40 EPs released to date. Competent with music software as Ableton Live and Logic Pro both on stage and in the studio, he writes and produces bespoke music for the likes of Ninja Tune, Audio Network and Extreme Music for Universal/Sony and is an endorser of Paiste Cymbals. Since 2015 his main focus has been on his own band PREP which, since their first song Cheapest Flight was released, has gained incredible popularity in South-East Asia, regularly touring and ranking 10s of millions of plays on Spotify and Youtube.

Untitled Group is Australia's largest independent music & events company, running a list of key festivals including Beyond The Valley and Pitch, and selling over 400k tickets per year in the process. Our guest this week, Fil Palermo, is a co-founder and director of Untitled, which he and his partners built from teenagers running DIY club nights into a world class promoter of large festivals booking some of the worlds biggest acts.Australia is a distinctive corner of the global music industry, and Fil guides us through the details and distinguishing features of the local market. We also discuss the mechanics of running a festival, the learning curve required to get up to speed from a knowledge base of not-that-much, diversity and variety on festival lineups, and a whole lot of other stuff as well. Untitled is a great example of an organisation showing it's possible to be serious about music, show real attention to detail in large events, and build something great without the need for corporate backing. George Fitzgerald, SOAK, Marie Davidson, Mount Kimbie's Kai Campos and TOKiMONSTA discuss how they make their music matter in today's transient world, whether an artist's work has to have a clear narrative, having to live with music that you're not 100% happy with, and accidentally writing knock-offs of your favourite artists. George FitzGerald is one of the most popular electronic producers and DJs in the UK right now. He was raised on garage and dubstep in his early years, before moving to Berlin to work as a translator and falling in love with the city's house and techno scenes. French-Canadian producer Marie Davidson's hypnotic style combines analog synthesizers and drum machines with “spoken text” vocals, leading to a prolific career both as a solo artist and member of creative trio L'Œil Nu. SOAK is a thought provoking singer-songwriter from Northern Ireland. Her effortless intimacy and moving lyrics have marked her as a voice for her generation, writing honest and introspective tracks that are mature beyond her years. After expanding the horizons of the dubstep scene in the late 2000s, Mount Kimbie's Kai Campos has gained a reputation for being an innovative producer, lending his skills to the likes of James Blake, King Krule and slowthai. TOKiMONSTA is a producer, DJ and prominent member of LA's underground dance music scene. She creates a futuristic style of electronic music that touches pop and instrumental hip-hop, and is also the boss of the Young Art label.

Some say you are born with it, a groove that is. Phil Gerus is a producer and disc jockey from Moscow with a penchant for disco, house and funk. A classically trained pianist he was raised with music in his soul and has sinced developed a love for the productuion of dancefloor delight and a wide ranging musical odyssey. A relative newcomer he has received wide scale support from a variety of labels and has been supported by the likes of Tensnake, Marcel Vogel, Tom Noble and George Fitzgerald. Between obscure samples, disco glory, golden house cuts and raucous edits he has quickly established himself as one of the most interesting producers to emerge from Russia in recent years.
