In 1978, UK industrial and experimental music pioneers Nurse With Wound, then a collaborative effort between multiple musicians before Steven Stapleton would turn the project into his braintrust some years later, released its debut album Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella. That record, the title of which references an excerpt of Comte de Lautréamont's Les Chants de Maldoror, is one of the primary influences on all that which would later be known as industrial, experimental, or noise music from that point on. More important than the album, however, is its liner notes. What has become known as the Nurse With Wound list was printed in the liner notes of the record: a list of over 200 avant-garde and outsider artists and groups that were influential on the development of Nurse with Wound in particular but that also can be used to historicize the avant-garde tendency in music writ large. From ground zero avant-rock like the Velvets to obscure European Jazz like Thrice Mice to pioneers of avant-garde composition like Karlheinz Stockhausen, the NWW list opens the floodgates to a new method of engagement with sound. In this episode, the boys invite Joey from the Easy Listening podcast to journey through the NWW list with all three of them finding three artists from it that appeal to their own sensibilities. OST Joe Potts "Airway" Robert Ashley "Automatic Writing" Chrome "SS Cygni" Le Forte Four "To the Crow" Pere Ubu "Small Was Fast" Horrific Child "Angoisse" The Decayes "Breeding in Captivity" Alvin Lucier "Bird & Person Dyning" Selten Gehorte Musik "Untitled" LINKS: Easy Listening podcast with John Duncan NWW List NWW Brainwashed doc Steven Stapleton interview Bob Nickas on NWW

Polish Jazz Podcasts - the History and the Current Events in Polish Jazz
Krzysztof Komeda (born Krzysztof Trzciński; 27 April 1931 – 23 April 1969) is the single most important artist in the entire history of Polish Jazz and one of the founding fathers of European Jazz as we know it. Komeda was an incredible artist, a constantly searching poet and he could find ways of individual expression of jazz inside himself, in Slavic lyricism, and in the traditions of Polish music. He is widely credited as being one of the founding fathers of a uniquely European style in Jazz composition.

Drummer, composer and bandleader Mareike Wiening has been said to bring “a planar modulating harmonic language and a propulsive drift” (New York Times) to the world of contemporary jazz. Based between Cologne and NYC, her current album “Metropolis Paradise” (released November 2019 on Greenleaf Music) documents the last official recording-session at the legendary Systems Two Recording Studios, NYC amidst goodbyes that kept flooding in from decades of clients as Wiening made her recording debut as Band-leader and Composer with a pianist who had had only the night before to learn her music. An old friend who I have always admired deeply, we catch up on her fascinating and inspiring story that is an apt display of how she went from the star student mentored by the likes of Stefon Harris finishing two Masters Degrees in two different continents simultaneously to the billiant, positive and cutting-edge force in the world of European Jazz. Coming to America: "I came here at the invitation of Tony Williams. Who even today, nobody plays like Tony. The closest drummer to Tony today is Cindy Blackman. I'm over there in Europe. Lets not equate the European Jazz scene with the American Jazz Scene. Today there's a lot more balance between the two continents but in the sixties it was America. You have no idea, since I was fifteen all I dreamt about was going to New York, New York NEW YORK! Not only New York but Harlem! That was the heart of jazz, that's where jazz was born and that was my music. First of all when I arrived in America I nearly kissed the ground. Tony met me at the airport and he was playing with Miles that night up in Harlem so the first day I'm in Harlem and I meet Miles and the next day I saw him again and he invited me to play on "In a Silent Way." How lucky can you get! It's like your dream coming true- literally. I was really struggling to survive but Miles helped more then anyone. He put money in my pocket, he'd say, "make sure you eat. Get by and pay your rent." Working with Tony in those days playing clubs we were making $20 a night. But I was welcome from an artistic music point of view. Jazz has always been marginal. Miles made money, Coltrane made money they were the big jazz stars, not fortunes like the pop people never the less good earnings, records. Surrender- "No one ever said it was easy, man. To be a free spirit in the true sense of the word you have to surrender to just what happens around you. You cannot fight what is, the effort of trying to fight what is is a waste of time. The only thing we can change in my opinion is ourselves. The power of dedication, the power of perseverance are all related to how much you love what you do. How much you care about what you do and how much attention you give to that. In a way what's outside is what it is. We cannot control what is going on outside. We have to surrender to life as its dealt us. You know what Im saying. You don't know how many different jobs I had do you? Driving Trucks, selling instruments, repairing instruments, selling cameras, selling Caviar to a London Hotel. Any number of driving jobs I've had. This is the life of a jazz musician. I never drive a taxi though. I had a lot of jobs just to keep body and soul together.i don't regret it for a second. Whatever happens to us it's part of what should happen to us. If something happens to you, it sounds hard but you have to welcome it at some point. I've had a lot of rough things happen to me but people don't want to know what life was like before I became a public figure. They don't really care to tell you the truth. It's all about whether it makes you or whether it breaks you." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

New album from Chip Wickham, music from the Discos Fuentes label in Colombia, a European Jazz classic & more!
Once again David and Jacob talk through some of their favorite ECM tracks, now all streaming everywhere except ONE mystery song, one of the earliest recordings Paul Motian ever made... You can only hear it here! Otherwise we've got Sinikka Langeland, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Zakir Hussein, Lester Bowie, Valentin Silvestrov, Craig Taborn and more. Whole playlist we talk about is here: https://tinyurl.com/ycqq6hj9
At the end of 2017 ECM Records, long a holdout against streaming, finally released its entire catalog online. Two ECM artists, guitarist Young and clarinetist Rothenberg, picked ten lesser-known tracks from the vast assembly of jazz, improvisation, and world music releases on the label to share with listeners and to discuss. Is there a definite ECM sound? Is that a myth? How does this music fit into our contemporary oversaturated landscape?
It's Mike's turn to rant as he complains about the state of ECM - the storied jazz label based in Germany - and then both boys dig into a buffet of recent releases, some more echo-y than others. Kenny Wheeler – SONGS FOR QUINTET; Keith Jarrett – CREATION; Jakob Bro – GEFIEN; Tim Berne – YOU'VE BEEN WATCHING ME.
