Albania's Catholic Bishops have raised concerns about the depopulation of their country through migration. Edward Stourton explores the impact of this with Sister Imelda Poole, who works much of the year in Albania and is President of RENATE, an organisation dedicated to combatting human trafficking. Jazz musician Courtney Pine is back on tour across the UK performing material from his new album ‘Spirituality'. He tells the Sunday programme how religion, spirituality and jazz have all come together in this latest work. The National Association of Muslim Police is calling for the word ‘Islamist' to be dropped from Counter-Terrorism Policing, they say it reflects negatively on Islam in general. Edward explores the nuances with Alexander Gent, Chairman of the National Association of Muslim Police and Dr Stephen Jones from the University of Birmingham Bishop Jude Arogundade, from the Diocese of Ondo in Nigeria, tells Edward of his concerns for the Christian community across the country. Harry Farley reports on ‘ANie' the breakaway network of churches creating its own formal Anglican denomination, as an alternative for conservative members of the Church of England. Catholic Priest, Father Ray Kelly tells about his ambition to represent Ireland at next year's Eurovision Song Contest. And as the World Cup kicks off in Qatar, we ask whether the FIFA President's claims about the moral hypocrisy of western Journalists in their reporting on the country's human rights record, hold any weight? Our guests Jonty Langley, writer on faith and politics and co-presenter of the Beer Christianity Podcast and journalist Amardeep Bassey, media trainer and consultant. The trio and Keberle became instant soulmates, sharing a deep love for Brasil's sophisticated music tradition, represented by Ivan Lins, Edu Lobo, Toninho Horta and Milton Nascimento, and also a love for American jazz. It wasn't long before Keberle and the Brasilian trio became firmly entrenched as the quartet that was to become Collectiv do Brasil.

It's Melanie Charles revisioning her in a totally surreal and cool duet. Portugal's best kept jazz secret Mário Laginha gives us a triotastic palette cleanser, before the energy ball that is Kinetika Bloco whops Duke Ellington's Caravan carnival style down the road to our final prayer: Javon Jackson's Sweet Chariot, Swingin' Low with some gospel-tinged calypso grooves.  Now that's an episode we're ALL gonna be talkin' about…www.linktr.ee/courtneypineglobal

Music & Conversation: The Podcast of English Composer Andrew Downes

Paula interviews world-renowned jazz guitarist and bassist, Fred Thelonius Baker.  Fred was a student at Birmingham School of Music (now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) from 1979, and studied composition with Andrew Downes. Andrew went on to invite Fred to teach at Birmingham Conservatoire in 1989, which led to Fred being a major part of Andrew's new School of Composition and Creative Studies from the early 90s. Fred has been a permanent teacher/lecturer in accoustic and bass guitar there ever since. In the mid 90s, Andrew composed his Concerto for Guitar, Electric Bass Guitar and Strings for Fred playing Electric Bass with Simon Dinnigan playing Acoustic Guitar. They recorded it for CD in 1999 with string players from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Fred and Simon also arranged Downes' Piano Sonatina, Movement 2 for Electric Bass and Acoustic Guitar and also recorded this for the CD. All of these works are played throughout the episode. More information on the works and the CD can be found here: https://www.andrewdownes.com/Soloists-with-Orchestra.html#GUITARSTRINGS Fred Thelonious Baker is a Jazz guitarist and bassist from the English village of Tibshelf, Derbyshire. Born in 1960, Fred was given a ukulele when he was four by his father. Indeed, Fred's parents were a major influence in the beginning of his musical journey. A year later, he was given his first guitar and went on to learn the Classical guitar. During his mid-teens, Fred also began an interest in the bass guitar, an instrument with which he has since become synonymous. After studying at Chesterfield College, Fred went on to study at Birmingham School of Music (now Conservatoire) where he gained a GBSM and ABSM in teaching and performance. Around this time, at the invitation of Sir John Dankworth and Cleo Laine, Fred began teaching at Wavendon All Music Summer School. Since then, Fred has taught and given masterclasses at many universities, music colleges and music Summer schools including Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Berkeley College of Music, USA, St Petersburg Conservatory, Russia, London Brunel, Huddersfield, Sheffield, and Derby Universities. Since 1989, he has been a permanent teacher/lecturer in acoustic and bass guitar at Birmingham Conservatoire. Fred has performed all over the world as a session musician and soloist with a variety of musicians and ensembles including Courtney Pine, Nigel Kennedy, Billy Cobham, the CBSO, Fairport Convention, Robert Wyatt, Harry Beckett, Horace Parlan, Soft Machine, John Etheridge, Pip Pyle, Ric Sanders, Karen Street, Joe Sachse, Tony Levin, Phil Bates, Clive Bunker, Elton Dean, Simon Dinnigan, Geoff Eales, Liam Genocky and Phil Miller. As both a jazz guitarist and bassist, Fred has appeared extensively on many recordings. "Spinal Tap" from his solo accoustic guitar CD, Life Suite, will be played on this episode. There's a worldwide revolution happening in modern music. Across the pond, the UK has countless talents blazing new trails and Yussef Dayes is a big part of it. First as the drummer in the duo Yussef Kamal, and now for his stellar adventures solo and collaborative: Alfa Mist, Tom Misch, and the legendary Blue Note Records. Dayes brings a fusion of soul, electronica, and funk that's like an ultra modern cinema for the ears.  Keeping with Blighty, the second half continues with the vibe that jazz has left on the multicultural United Kingdom. It started with a Trad Fad in the ‘50s, eventually taking on the elements of it's African, Asian, Caribbean, and youth communities with fearless results–from Afro-Beat to free jazz to Northern Soul and dancehall culture. We wax on with a list of serious contenders: Dizzy Reece, Emma Jean Thackray, Courtney Pine, the elusive Origin, and IG Culture. Plus, we'd be remiss to forget Cliff Townshend's singing saxophone, aka the forebear of The Who's Pete Townshend. ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. ABOUT KYLE EAGLE (Host): Kyle Eagle has been a contributing writer and producer for the NPR-WBGO, WUCF, WPRK, Wax Poetics, The Orlando Weekly, Artbourne, and The Fiscal Times, as well as several music and film releases- Light in the Attic's documentary "This Is Gary McFarland", and an upcoming film on composer Jack Nietzsche. I like clever women, I like talking to clever women. They're women who are curious, thinking, women who know and love themselves and because they love themselves you can hear it and see it in the work they make, continually exploring the reaches of their creativity. Singer, songwriter, cellist and composer Ayanna Witter-Johnson is one of those women. Clever women also seem to have done a lot, they have a lot of qualifications, here's a quick summary - Ayanna graduated with a first from both Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and the Manhattan School of Music. She's been a featured artist with saxophonist Courtney Pine's Afropeans: Jazz Warriors, a member of sitarist Anoushka Shankar's Traces of You album tour and is the only non-American to have won amateur night live at the Apollo theatre in Harlem New York. She's released 3 EPs, through her own label Hill And Gully records and her full length album Road Runner, came out last year. We talk about Ayanna's journey from a place at Cambridge to study French and Spanish to a scholarship at the Manhattan school of music. From classical music composition and orchestration to jazz, songwriting and life as a performer. We talk about incorporating the cello, which she's named Reuben, into her performance. Playlists for all past Sets of Jazz Gumbo will be found at jazzgumbo.blogspot.ca A pretty broad mix of things this week, and it remains me of the amazing diversity of human expression, of all the many ways we can be moved. And, as I approach six years of producing this Podcast, I delight in playing artists and individual cuts that I haven’t before, as well as favorites that I reintroduce now and again. So I make note of the Courtney Pine piece, from a newly acquired album, to Nana Simopoulos, an artist entirely new to me, and to Billy Joel, who is not someone who normally comes to mind for inclusion, but whose gorgeous pop standard I find irresistible. The Podomatic stats page tells me that I’m drawing listeners from more and more cities and countries. As always, I’d love to hear from any of you who care to share a word about the music, who have a request, a complaint or best of all, a recommendation of an amazing artist you think ought to be heard more widely, that I might share with your fellow listeners. Thanks for your ears; I hope they enjoy this week’s flavors! Thrive! Kirby Obsidian

Jeff “Tain” Watts (http://tainish.com) is an acclaimed jazz musician, drummer and composer based in Easton, Pennsylvania. With 5 GRAMMY awards on his resume, Jeff has had a lengthy recording career as a sideman to many prominent jazz artists, including both Wynton and Branford Marsalis. His compositional skills now command equal attention. Jeff initially majored in classical percussion at Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University, where he was primarily a timpanist, followed by enrollment at the Berklee School of Music. Jeff joined the Wynton Marsalis Quartet in 1981 and proceeded to win three Grammy Awards with the ensemble: Black Codes From The Underground, J Mood and Marsalis Standard Time. Watts left Wynton Marsalis in 1988. After working with George Benson, Harry Connick. Jr. and McCoy Tyner, he joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet in 1989, winning Grammys for I Heard You Twice the First Time and Contemporary Jazz. In the film and television industry Jeff has appeared as both a musician on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and as an actor, Rhythm Jones in Spike Lee’s “Mo Better Blues”. Jeff joined Kenny Garrett’s band after returning to New York in 1995 and continued to record and tour with Branford Marsalis as well as Danilo Perez, Michael Brecker, Betty Carter, Kenny Kirkland, Courtney Pine, Geri Allen, Alice Coltrane, Greg Osby, McCoy Tyner, Steve Coleman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Harry Connick Jr, and Ravi Coltrane. Jeff now leads his own band, and records his own compositions on his own record label, Dark Key Music. (http://myiesstore.com/darkkeymusic/) Along with explosive power, blinding speed and mastery of complex rhythms and time signatures, Jeff’s style is at once elegant, composed, and yet very gritty at the same time. His latest recording, “Blue, Vol. 1” (http://myiesstore.com/darkkeymusic/product/blue-vol-1-cd/) is available now and receiving widespread critical acclaim.

NU-JAZZ REVIVAL. ACID JAZZ/DOWNTEMPO, DANCE FLOOR JAZZ, Acid Jazz was a term coined in the late 80's by Gilles Peterson, Chris Bangs and Eddie Piller. It describes a funky music style which incorporates elements of jazz, 70's funk, hip-hop, soul, as well as other genres. Culminating soon afterwards in the creation of Acid Jazz Records. It's first signing was Galliano, featuring lead singer Rob Gallagher. Hot on Galliano's heels came The Brand New Heavies, The New Jersey Kings (an alias for The James Taylor Quartet), Mother Earth and The Sandals. In 1990, Gilles Peterson left Acid Jazz Records and started a new label called Talkin' Loud, which continued the tradition, signing acts such as Courtney Pine, Incognito, The K-Creative, Omar and MC Solaar.
