In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with two more of our full-time friends, Jan and Gary Crosby. Jan and Gary were another one of the couples that we traveled throughout Canada and Alaska with this past summer. It was great to have them on the show and reminisce about what an incredible trip we had. The people, the places, but most of all, the company we shared was such a blessing. We originally met Jennie and Eric on a volunteer project through A Year to Volunteer back in February of 2022 at Sam Houston Jones State Park in Lake Charles, Louisiana. We are so grateful for Y2V. Not only for the opportunity to make a difference throughout the country, but for the amazing community that we have become a part of. If it wasn't for Y2V, this epic Alaskan group adventure would have never taken place. Sure, we probably would have all made it to Alaska at some point during our individual full-time journeys, but to be able to experience the last frontier with this small group of friends is truly what put the trip over the top for all of us. As I've spoken to each of our friends that we traveled with, we have all said that we'll most definitely get to Alaska again at some point, but this trip will always be the trip of a lifetime, only because of who we were able to go through it with.

On today's PoM podcast I share a review of the book "Going My Own Way" by Gary Crosby. I would venture to say few of the PoM listeners will know who Gary Crosby is and even fewer would have read this book. But as I read this book about Gary's relationship with his famous father Bing Crosby I recognized so many things we are workiing through when it comes to PoM and healing the father wounds. Ahead of the release of Maestro, Bradley Cooper's long-awaited film about Leonard Bernstein, Sara Mohr-Pietsch talks to the conductor and composer's daughters - Jamie and Nina - about their parents' relationship, listening to music with their father as children, and how it feels to see their lives recreated on screen. Sara is joined by critics Jessica Duchen and Lillian Crawford who share their thoughts, among other things, about Bradley Cooper's conducting of Mahler's Second Symphony in Ely Cathedral - a central scene in the film. Sara talks to American/Canadian composer Linda Catlin Smith about a new recording of her chamber works by long-time collaborators Thin Edge New Music Collective. Linda has become a leading voice in Canadian musical culture and she tells Sara about her love of spacious and sparse music, and how stepping away from her composition to weed or wash-up can inspire new ideas. Tomorrow's Warriors is an organisation which has supported and nurtured young musicians in jazz for over 30 years, including artists such as Soweto Kinch, Nubya Garcia, Moses Boyd, Shabaka Hutchings and recent Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective. Sara meets its co-founders, Gary Crosby and Janine Irons, to talk about how Tomorrow's Warriors began, how they've gone on to have such a big impact on the UK jazz scene, and the vital need for young people to have access to musical experiences.

Vietnam, ecological worries and poverty and suffering inspired the lyrics in Marvin Gaye's 1971 album What's Going On. “Your Hit Parade” was an American radio and television music program that was broadcast from 1935 to 1959. It was sponsored by American Tobacco's Lucky Strike cigarettes. During this 24-year run, the show had 19 orchestra leaders and 52 singers or groups. Not surprisingly, listeners were informed that the "Your Hit Parade survey checks the best sellers on sheet music and phonograph records, the songs most heard on the air and most played on the automatic coin machines, an accurate, authentic tabulation of America's taste in popular music." However, the exact procedure of this "authentic tabulation" remained a secret. Here are 21 hits from 1950. Enjoy. ***** Join the conversation on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 **** or by email at dannymemorylane@gmail.com **** In this episode you'll hear:1) Hoop-Dee-Doo by Kay Starr (with Frank DeVol Orchestra)2) I'll Always Love You (Day After Day) [Charted for 16 weeks] by Dean Martin3) Rag Mop by The Ames Brothers4) April In Paris by Frank Sinatra5) If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd 've Baked A Cake by Georgia Gibbs6) There's No Tomorrow by Tony Martin7) Blue Light Boogie, Parts by Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five8) All My Love (Bolero) [First reached #1 on the Disk Jockey chart on 10/29/50 - Lasted 5 weeks] by Patti Page9) Mona Lisa [First reached #1 on the Disc Jockey chart on 7/8/50 - Lasted 8 weeks] by Nat King Cole10) Zing Zing, Zoom Zoom by Perry Como (with The Fontane Sisters)11) Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy [First reached #1 on the Juke Box chart on 2/11/50 - Lasted 8 weeks] by Red Foley12) Nevertheless (I'm In Love With You) by The Mills Brothers13) A Bushel And A Peck (from the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls) by Doris Day14) If I Were A Bell by Jan Garber & His Orchestra (with Roy Cordell, vocal)15) Love, Look Away by Tony Bennett16) Nice Work If You Can Get It by Sarah Vaughan17) Count Every Star by Ray Anthony & His Orchestra (with Dick Noel, vocal)18) Sam's Song (The Happy Tune) by Bing Crosby (with Gary Crosby, Bing's son's record debut @ age 17])19) Teardrops From My Eyes by Fran Warren20) Harbor Lights [First reached #1 on the Juke Box chart on 11/18/50 - Lasted 4 weeks] by Sammy Kaye (with Tony Alamo & The Kaydetts, vocals)21) As Time Goes By by Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra

In this episode, I’m talking with pioneering and award-winning jazz musicians, educators, and producers Janine Irons MBE and Gary Crosby OBE, who together run the music education and development charity Tomorrow’s Warriors. We talk about their routes into music and their work addressing barriers to music and the music industry for young people facing barriers to progression in the music industry – in particular black or/and female musicians.

We discuss in this tea time were these four mean, justified, or a little of both.. Christina opened the floodgates with her book Mommy Dearest, Bd Hyman wrote a truly whiny despicable book that was released while Bette was alive. I don't think that was the plan, I think BD wanted to write her book and be in the will too. Did Joan kill Alfred Steele?? Did Bette turn into a demon to open the gates of hell. Find out and so much more.. Thanks so much to April. She's fab as usual. Check out her movie review podcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/1348540 Mostly thanks to you all.. You are the best.. We discuss the books written by Joan Crawford daughter Christina, Bette Davis daughter BD, Bing Crosby's son Gary and Lana Turners daughter Cheryl. We dissect, talk about some true cruelties on parents parts and some ehhhh...WE talk BD's bouffant mullet, that she has had since the late 70's. A little mean girls thrown in. It was a lot of fun. I think you will enjoy it a lot.. Thanks so much to April. She's fab as usual. Check out her movie review podcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/1348540 Mostly thanks to you all.. You are the best.. AAI for Good, a global summit hosted by XPRIZE and ITU, about machine translation and cognitive code switching. Today’s episode explores the concept of Cosmo-uBuntu, an approach to technological innovation that addresses issues of global justice and helps us better understand personhood in AI praxis. Hosted by S. Ama Wray, an associate professor at UC Irvine and co-founder of AI for Africa, with guests Vukosi Marivate, Jose Cossa and Jackie Berry, highlight the cultural and individual differences in direct interaction with different technology interfaces based on the cultural reading practices of non-Western and African peoples, with thoughts on how these works can reverse the trend toward exclusively Anglophone digital futures in Africana worlds while conducting proactive restoration of African epistemologies.Dr. S. Ama Wray, is a self-described Performance Architect and is an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of California, Irvine. Through dance methods she innovates across disciplinary lines, collaborating widely with practitioners from music, new media, health, visual art and theater. She is one of the co-Founders of AI 4 Afrika, inspired by AI for Good, and also the Africana Institute for Creativity Recognition and Elevation. In 2018 she received the 2018 Emerging Scholar Award from the African Diaspora SIG of the Comparative International Education Society. Her research into improvisation through the lens of West African performance, specifically Ewe, is burgeoning into a new interdisciplinary field, an integrative study of the optimization of human performance. The outcomes include Embodiology® an inclusive movement and mind method, optimizing creativity, empathy and wellbeing. As a consequence of COVID-19 she has created online wellness practice - Embodying Resilience - to maintain vitality and create community. Her creative praxis as relates to digital domains began in the U.K as recipient of the 2003 National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts Fellowship, producing the prize-winning Texterritory. Integrating a cellphone performance platform it transforms audiences into co-creators in live performance settings. As founding Artistic Director of JazzXchange Wray continues to elevate jazz music in the concert dance setting, collaborating with artists including: Wynton Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin, Nicole Mitchell, Gary Crosby, OBE, Zoe Rahman and Julian Joseph, OBE. Her academic writing on Embodiology® and also Jazz Dance have been published by Oxford Books, Routledge and Florida University Press.Dr. Vukosi Marivate is the ABSA UP Chair of Data Science at the University of Pretoria. Vukosi works on developing Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence methods to extract insights from data. A large part of his work over the last few years has been in the intersection of Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing. Vukosi is interested in Data Science for Social Impact, using local challenges as a springboard for research. In this area, Vukosi has worked on projects in science, energy, public safety and utilities. Vukosi is a founder of the Deep Learning Indaba, the largest Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence workshop on the African continent, aiming to strengthen African Machine Learning.José Cossa, Ph.D., is a Mozambican scholar, writer/author, researcher, poet, blogger, “Twitterer”, podcaster, entrepreneur, and an Associate Professor in the College of Education at Pennsylvania State University. Most recently, Cossa served as a Visiting Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education at the American University in Cairo and a Senior Lecturer at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College. Cossa holds a Ph.D. in Cultural and Educational Policy Studies with a depth area in Comparative and International Education from Loyola University Chicago. He is the author of the book Power, Politics, and Higher Education: International Regimes, Local Governments, and Educational Autonomy, the recipient of the 2012 Joyce Cain Award for Distinguished Research on People of African Descent, awarded by the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), and a member of the MacArthur Foundation 100&Change Panel of Judges for two consecutive competitions (Inaugural Challenge and 2019/2020). Cossa’s research focus is on power dynamics in negotiation over educational policy; unveiling issues inherent in the promise of modernity and working towards decolonizing, de-bordering, de-peripheralizing, and de-centering the world; higher education policy and administration; system transfer; international development; and, global and social justice. In addition, Cossa is currently engaging in a new (exterior to modernity) theorizing, i.e., Cosmo-uBuntu, to offer alternative theoretical grounding to research, analysis, and practice.Dr. Jackie Berry is a Cognitive Scientist studying visual perception, human-computer interaction, and expertise. Dr. Berry was a Fulbright U.S. Scholar at the American University in Cairo for the 2019-2020 academic year where she served as a teacher and researcher. Her work focused on TetLag which is the brief performance dip caused by switching to a different, but familiar, computer interface. Jackie holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Master of Science in Human Factors Psychology, a Master of Business Administration, and a Doctorate in Cognitive Psychology. She was the first person at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to collect online research data and the first African-American to graduate with a Doctorate in Cognitive Psychology from the State University of New York at the University in Albany. Her major research projects include developing a new model of geometric feature detection for English letter recognition, studying task switching in older adults, and investigating attentional capture during visual search. During her Fulbright U.S. Scholar award year Dr. Berry investigated whether Arabic-English biliterates might be better able to switch between different interfaces and configurations for the same task because they must regularly alternate between different orientations of text in reading, writing, and technology use in their daily lives. She wishes to continue this research with other “bidirectional biliterates” such as biliterate speakers of Hebrew and Chinese.Links:xprize.org/blog See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Puttenham is the little village that does big bonfires. For more than 30 years, we've been incinerating everything from 10 Downing Street to the Death Star. Thanks to Covid-19 there was no bonfire in 2020, so this episode of Nine Stories High aims to capture a bit of the magic. We bring together some of the organising team to talk about its history, how it comes together and what it means. My thanks to Mike Blundell Jones, Adam Calver, Dave Cassar, Will Yule, Peter Conn, Liz Yule, Gary Crosby, Liz Crosby, Nick Wildman, Pete Reynolds and Sir James Leonard. You can get a much better idea of how the bonfire looks and feels in Ben Finney's lovely Surrey Wars/Puttenham Strikes Back film. And remember to add your bonfire photos to our Facebook page.Hope you enjoy it. Fingers crossed for 2021...

We had the chance to meet British drummer and producer Moses Boyd to talk about his new groundbreaking album "Dark Matter". Yes another English speaking podcast, because we're also called Hemisphere Sound for a reason. This time, our discussion led us from Moses' approach of the ever-evolving "UK sound" to his love for the "thick and thumpy" basslines on Fabric's iconic soundsystem. He also explained his spiritual relationship with his mentor Gary Crosby, the man behind the defining music program Tomorrow's Warriors. This music education program is now recognized as the main source for a major part of the current "UK scene", with former members including Nubya Garcia, Soweto Kinch or Zara McFarlane. The rest of the show including our interview with Chicagoan trumpeter and International Anthem affiliate Jaimie Branch will be online soon! Thanks for sharing and enjoying the journey with us, the best is yet to come. Interview by Claire Le Gac and Sylvain Pinot, editing by Sylvain Pinot

But, the music in this lesson (which you’ll hear at the end), is actually our music that we wrote using their theory. On that note, we could definitely make lessons on their melodies, chords and bass as well, cos there’s so much interesting theory going on in those, but this lesson is all about rhythm, so we’ll focus on their drum groove. Right, so start by setting your tempo to 146 BPM, then make two bars of 4/4, with your grid set to 1/16 notes. INTRONow, the first standout feature you’ll notice is that tempo. That ain’t a tempo for sitting on your ass and listening, that’s a tempo for dancing! This is just one of the many refreshing aspects of this new UK Jazz movement. And this isn’t really Jazz, this is the sound of London. You see, London, which is my hometown, is a melting pot of cultures, so its music is a reflection of that. This is why you’ll hear elements from homegrown grime, Jamaican dancehall, West African afrobeat, and more, all coming together in this new sound. And this musical melting pot is perfectly captured by Steam Down. By the way, big shoutout to Gary Crosby and all the other heroes at the Tomorrow’s Warriors charity for their life-changing educational work behind this movement. STEP 1. FOUR-ON-THE-FLOOR (ALMOST)The driving force behind this awesome groove is an almost four-on-the-floor pattern on the kick. The drummer plays beat 1, 3 and 4, but not beat 2. This creates a super dancey groove, but leaves space for something more interesting. STEP 2. MORE SYNCOPATION!Next, in that space left open by not playing a kick on beat 2, the drummer plays a couple syncopated snare hits on beats 1a and 2+. Then in the second bar, there’s even more syncopation, as there are three syncopated snare hits on beats 1a, 2e and 2a. STEP 3. IRREGULAR HATSNow, there’s only one rule when it comes to the hats in this groove: don’t play beat 2. By leaving that beat totally open, the drummer ensures that the super funky groove created from all those syncopated snares is not watered down, cos this is Steam Down, not water down! Also, by having some rests on the hats, it creates an irregular pattern, which keeps the groove unpredictable. And lastly, there’s a 1/32 note thrown in for extra spice. But, the music in this lesson (which you'll hear at the end), is actually our music that we wrote using their theory. On that note, we could definitely make lessons on their melodies, chords and bass as well, cos there's so much interesting theory going on in those, but this lesson is all about rhythm, so we'll focus on their drum groove. Right, so start by setting your tempo to 146 BPM, then make two bars of 4/4, with your grid set to 1/16 notes. INTRONow, the first standout feature you'll notice is that tempo. That ain't a tempo for sitting on your ass and listening, that's a tempo for dancing! This is just one of the many refreshing aspects of this new UK Jazz movement. And this isn't really Jazz, this is the sound of London. You see, London, which is my hometown, is a melting pot of cultures, so its music is a reflection of that. This is why you'll hear elements from homegrown grime, Jamaican dancehall, West African afrobeat, and more, all coming together in this new sound. And this musical melting pot is perfectly captured by Steam Down. By the way, big shoutout to Gary Crosby and all the other heroes at the Tomorrow's Warriors charity for their life-changing educational work behind this movement. Also, by having some rests on the hats, it creates an irregular pattern, which keeps the groove unpredictable. And lastly, there’s a 1/32 note thrown in for extra spice. Clive Anderson and Sara Cox are joined by Katherine Parkinson, Gary Crosby and Cora Bissett for an eclectic mix of conversation, music and comedy. With music from Gary Crosby. Producer: Tim Bano
This show seems to mark the abandonment of the series rather than its logical close. There were 39 shows in the first season for General Electric but this is only the 36th. The usual ‘discussion’ between Bing and Ken Carpenter, implies that they are summing up all the previous items of this nature but astonishingly, at the close of the program, we hear Bing saying, “I hope to see you all again, next week, when our guest will be Miss Rosemary Clooney” This information is re-iterated by Ken Carpenter in the closing announcements. In fact, it was planned that Gary Crosby would take over with his own show on the following Sunday. The confusion may have been due to Gary Crosby having a motor accident on May 24 near San Jose when a Mexican laborer called Felix Olivares (age 24) was killed. Gary was treated for a lacerated nose and an injured knee. Fortunately Gary had not been drinking but the Mexicans had been. Bing was however the recipient of suits totaling $155,000 as Gary was a minor. No charges were filed though and County officials said neither driver was at fault. Gary’s debut had to be postponed until June 13 and his radio program replaced Bing’s on CBS for the summer period of thirteen weeks before Gary began his third year at Stanford. Guests on Gary’s opening show included Jane Russell and Rhonda Fleming. Ken Carpenter was the announcer, John Scott Trotter furnished the musical support, and Bill Morrow was the writer. Murdo MacKenzie directed the show. In other words, Gary appears to have simply stepped into Bing’s shoes for the summer season.
Three great shows!
Eoin questioned the wisdom of Maurizio Sarri berating his players in public a couple of weeks back - today he informs us that in their last 3 away games since he said those words, they've conceded 1.2% of their entire premier league goals against. Dion Fanning and Jonathan Wilson are on hand to discuss just how doomed Sarri is, and whether the only thing saving him is Roman Abramovich's new-found disinterest in the Chelsea project. They also discuss whether the clamour for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get the Manchester United job for keeps is now too loud to ignore, or if the games in the next 3 weeks against Paris Saint Germain and Liverpool will give us all a much better idea of his capabilities. Plus there's Brian Clough, Gary Crosby, and apologetic punch-recipients.
Rich dissects the week's action with a special focus on how Inter's Marcelo Brozovic can help and hinder goalkeepers with the new, wall-protecting "crocodile" technique. Cardiff City goalkeeping coach Andy Dibble also joins that gang to reflect on an eventful 24-year career, including that Gary Crosby moment in 1990.
The boys are back looking at what happened in football this week in the 1990s. On the agenda for Ash Rose, Joel Young and Matthew Crist this week is the retirement of 90s controversial figure Vinnie Jones as he says goodbye to football and hello to Hollywood, the dawn of a new era for England as Terry Venables takes charge of the Three Lions, and Liverpool and Newcastle in the other 4-3 classic. All that plus chat on Gary Crosby, Top of the Pops in the 80s and of course pear cider. Keep it 90s! This week the regular trio of Ben, Maciej and I take on a multitude of issues related to the Polish Ekstraklasa, the Polish national team, the Polish Cup and the crazy promotion race in the Polish second tier. Along the way we delighted in Franciszek Smuda's magical reinvention of humdrum players, Spas Delev's magic against Holland and Maciej got the chance to read the results from the inaugural Ekstraklasa round of games in 1927. It was pretty wild people.
