Então convidei a jornalista Camila Brandalise para me ajudar nessa conversa. In this episode, I sit down with Taylor Eigsti, and this conversation goes everywhere I hoped it would. We talk about preparation versus spontaneity, writing music that leaves room for the present moment, and why the best ensembles feel more like carefully cast films than perfectly rehearsed machines.Taylor shares what it's been like working recently with Michael League, Ben Wendel, Kendrick Scott, Antonio Sánchez, and others, and we get deep into his compositional mindset—why quantity matters, why “bad ideas” are necessary, and how composition is a muscle that has to be exercised. We also talk about his Grammy-winning albums Tree Falls and Plot Armor, the long studio hours behind them, and why recognition doesn't always translate the way people expect.Along the way, we hit on collaboration, identity, touring life, teaching, football fandom, and what it really means to show up prepared and fully present for the moment that actually matters—the short window onstage when everything finally comes alive.Music from the Episode:Let You Bee (Taylor Eigsti)Bucket of F's (Taylor Eigsti)Look Around You (Taylor Eigsti)Thank you for listening. Blue and cool is the mood as we spin the dial back to the 1950s — a decade of chrome, tailfins, Cold War tension, Beat poetry, and late-night cigarette smoke curling toward the ceiling of a dimly lit club. Beneath the middle class culture of the day, there was a restless heartbeat of jazz. This was the era when bebop matured into cool, hard bop caught fire, and modal explorations began reshaping the language of improvisation. Artists like Miles Davis refined understatement into revolution, John Coltrane stretched harmony toward spiritual searching, Thelonious Monk bent notes and expectations alike, and Ella Fitzgerald turned the human voice into a virtuosic instrument. Jazz in the '50s wasn't background music — it was conversation, protest, poetry, and possibility. Dave's selected some important landmarks and deep tracks that take you into those dusty digital bins of jazz and improvisation this morning on Deeper Roots.

Niia joins me to unpack her forthcoming album—a modern, live-first take on jazz that blends an acoustic rhythm section with subtle, future-leaning electronic colors. Trained as a jazz vocalist and raised at the piano, she set out to create something timeless, without relying on retro tropes or trend-bound sounds. The result is a record that breathes: spacious mixes, genuine dynamics, and arrangements that allow for interplay while keeping the vocal narrative at the center. We trace her path from a fiercely musical Italian family outside Boston—classical piano with her mom, jazz studies at The New School in New York—to early studio reps as a jingle singer, where she learned mic technique, speed, and how to “translate” creative direction. A move to Los Angeles opened new collaborative circles and ultimately led to the creation of this album, co-produced with Lawrence Rothman and Spencer Zahn (whose bass work is a standout). Most core tracks were cut together, with Niia revisiting vocals after living with the songs; mixer John Castello kept the feel alive rather than over-processed. Her version of “Angel Eyes,” distilled to voice and piano, anchors the record and nods to the tradition she loves. We also discuss the human side of performing—stage fright, perfectionism, and the transition from singing with eyes closed to fully engaging with an audience. For Niia, connection beats ego: the goal is to help people feel something, not to sand every edge. As the album rolls out (release date: October 10), she's launching a 10-date European tour starting in Germany and Copenhagen, with hopes of bringing the show to Asia and the U.S. next. Long term, she dreams of a lush standards album—but, as she puts it, not just yet.To learn more about Niia, visit her website.
