The British jazz saxophonist and clarinetist JOHN SURMAN has a style that's described as "intensely lyrical," a quality he attributes to his time as a choirboy, and his upbringing in the verdant landscapes of rural west England. Surman sees the 20th century origins of jazz by black musicians in the U.S. as a melting pot of world music, with African, Creole, Spanish and other influences. These were eventually transformed into the speed and virtuosity of Bebop, which dominated jazz at mid-century. Between the world wars, Europe had become a major venue for American jazz musicians. The genre took on influences from European folk and classical music, as well as a wider range of world influences from the Middle East, Central Asia, and South America. As a result, European jazz tended to be less abstract, more melodic, and more atmospheric than American jazz. The essential German jazz and New Music label ECM, founded in 1969, continues to document this repertoire in a catalog of over 1800 superb recordings, from which this program is drawn. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, lyrical jazz from Europe with a focus on Norway, a small country that produces a remarkable amount of great music, on a program called EUROJAZZ. Music is by the TORD GUSTAVSEN QUARTET, TERJE RYPDAL, JOHN SURMAN, ARVE HENRIKSEN & HARMEN FRAANJE, THOMAS STRØNEN, CRAIG TABORN, and KRISTJAN RANDALU with BEN MONDER and MARKKU OUNASKARI.
In the cooling nights of autumn, we return to the treasury of music on the German ECM Records label. For quality, consistency, and unity of vision, ECM has no peer. In the post-genre, trans-cultural world of ECM, the motto is "The Most Beautiful Sound Next to Silence." It began in 1969 as Editions of Contemporary Music, focused on European jazz. In the course of over 1200 albums, the repertoire has broadened to include classical music both old and new on the ECM New Series, as well as innovative recordings of contemporary folk, world and experimental music. Yet for all the breadth, depth and variety of the ECM repertoire, there are sonic and emotional streams that run through the entire catalog, the product of the refined sensibility and native perfectionism of ECM founder and producer MANFRED EICHER. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the introspective, atmospheric sound of ECM Records, on a program called RUMINATIONS. Music is by ELENI KARAINDROU, JOHN SURMAN, MIROSLAV VITOUS & JAN GARBAREK, EBERHARD WEBER, and EIVIND AARSET. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]
Kinkead's ashes were recently discovered in Seattle through the ‘Missing in America Project' where he passed away in 1916. John Surman with the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War said it's special for his organization to be able to return Kinkead's remains to Plattsmouth.“I think any Veteran has a right, and I don't care what war they were in, to have a proper burial,” Surman said. “It's the very least that we owe them, and we actually owe them a lot more than that.”

Did you miss me? This week, I'm joined by actor, novelist, and musician David Duchovny. David is about to release his third album “Gestureland”, and was kind enough to talk to me about it. We discuss transferring skills across art forms, the energy of inexperience vs having learnt your craft, as well as the pros and cons of long-term creative partnerships. It's a good one! Also on the show, I welcome my dear friend Peter Eden. Peter was an A&R guy in the 60's who branched out into the role of producer. He played a pivotal part in the early career of Donovan, and went on to produce records by John Surman, Bill Fay and more. He was also the brains behind the 70's children's TV series “Animal Kwackers”. Enjoy! Twitter: @signalspodcastInstagram: @sendingsignalspodcast
Welcome to the second half of the England-Italy jazz rematch. England and Italy have both championed jazz very early on, and they have been among the first European jazz scenes to develop a recognizable accent in how they speak the jazz language, light-heartedness and sense of humour being integral aspects of that accent. Even though Italian and English sound quite different as languages, their two jazz accents are surprisingly similar in how they both seem to be characterized by a certain attention to melody. Once more a playlist matching one British musician, band or project, with one from Italy The playlist features Stefano Bollani; Django Bates; First House; 3Quietmen (feat. Stefano Battaglia); Julian Arguelles & Frankfurt Radio Big Band; Pino Minafra; Guy Barker; Fabrizio Bosso, Julian Oliver Mazzariello; Gianluigi Trovesi; John Surman; Colin Towns' Mask Symphonic; Loose Tubes; Italian Instabile Orchestra. Ben Cousins is 72 years old and is passionate about the ocean – he has surfed it, swum in it, and now free dives in and around the ocean kelp forest south of Simonstown, south of Capetown, South Africa. At the start of our conversation in this podcast. Ben quotes poet Emily Dickenson - ‘That it will never come again - Is what makes life so sweet'. Ben lives life to the full, and strives to understand this mysterious world by keeping a diary for every swim - shark, octopus, stringray, and all the creatures big and small that make up this unique ecology. The music links are 'On Still Waters' by John Surman, Nelson Ayres and Rob Waring; 'A Breath Away' by Ralph Downer; 'Blue in Green' by Miles Davis.

Saxophonist and jazz composer John Surman talks to Sara Mohr-Pietsch about his favourite choral music.
