In the 20th episode of the ECM podcast, we are joined by acclaimed American guitarist Ralph Towner, who has been with ECM since back in 1973, when his debut for the label was released. On his new solo album, “At First Light”, recorded in Lugano in 2022, the guitarist presents new and familiar original compositions as well as a couple of songs from the Great American Songbook, performed on classical guitar. In our conversation, Ralph goes all the way back to the beginnings of his collaboration with Manfred Eicher and talks about his days as a piano player, or studying guitar in Vienna and then founding the band Oregon. Of course, we also speak about his new record.
In his liner note for At First Light, Ralph Towner writes of the singularity of having most of his life's work at one record label. He's been an ECM artist for more than fifty years, appearing in many different contexts, one of the most important being a run of solo recordings which began with Diary in 1973. At First Light is the newest addition to the solo guitar series. “My solo recordings,” says Towner, “have always included my own compositions in which there are trace elements of the composers and musicians that have attracted me over the years. Musicians such as George Gershwin, John Coltrane, John Dowland, Bill Evans, to name a few. The blend of keyboard and guitar techniques is an important aspect of my playing and composition, and I feel that this album is a good example of shaping this expanse of influences into my personal music.”Track Listing:1 Flow2 Strait3 Make Someone Happy4 Ubi Stunt5 Guitarra Piccante6 At First Light7 Danny Boy8 Fat Foot9 Argentinian Nights10 Little Old Lady11 Empty StageClassical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber and Apple Classical. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#LaMusicaFestival #CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcasted with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).
A far-reaching conversation with one of the finest bass players of our time, Glen Moore, known for his work with the Paul Winter Consort and Oregon, he also recorded many albums on ECM and Intuition with the likes of Tim Hardin, Larry Coryell, Art Lande, Rob Scheps, Larry Karush, and of course Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, and Collin Walcott. Why is he now living in a remote town in the desert? Why has he started playing a brand-new tuning on the bass now that he's over 80 years old?

Hodian's music conveys emotions ranging from profound melancholy to bold exuberance. His hauntingly beautiful melodies, intricate rhythms and soulful intensity reflect both his Armenian roots and his formal classical training, as well as his years spent as a cutting edge jazz improviser. Hodian received Masters degrees in composition and conducting at The Philadelphia College for the Performing Arts. John also spent several summers at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado where he studied piano and improvisation with Art Lande, Ralph Towner as well as literature and poetry with Allen Ginsburg and William Burroughs. While teaching composition and music theory at the University of the Arts, John was conductor of the Philadelphia New Music Ensemble and associate conductor of The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. John went on to found the first fully digital music studio in Philadelphia where he began his career in film and television scoring. Over the past 15 years he has scored over 250 documentary films and won the New York Emmy Award for "Best Music for a Documentary". John's music has been heard in numerous feature films, dance pieces, chamber music ensembles, stage dramas, music-theater pieces and over 300 documentaries. His music-theater piece, “Sweet Theresiendstadt”, produced by En Garde Arts and Theater Archa, played for a year in Prague before touring to Warsaw and Berlin. In addition to being selected as resident composer for the Sundance Theater Institute, John has collaborated with leading theater figures such as Anne Bogart and Israel Horowitz. John was a two time winner of the New Dramatist Frederick Lowe award for music theater.
Guitar master Ralph Towner plays the 6 string and the 12 string acoustic guitar here and a little piano on this masterful album called "Batik". Towner's music is impressionistic, spacey, energetic and meditative and his 5 compositions here reflect his open concept. Towner has made scads of albums for ECM but this is one of his best. He is accompanied by two great musical masters in the persons of bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Experiencing Towner's many moods explored in these selections gives one an idea of his range and imagination. Batik is a wonderful musical excursion so check it out tonight.

Á sama tíma standa yfir tvær sýningar á höfuðborgarsvæðinu sem fjalla um veður og aðeins lengra í burtu, í New York, var nýlega opnuð sýning sem fjallar um loftslagsbreytingar, og nýlega kom út bók Naomi Klein á íslensku sem fjallar um loftslag á tímum kapítalisma. Við veltum fyrir okkur loftslagskvíða í þætti dagsins. Nú í vikunni kom út ritið Frelsi mannsins, eftir indverska heimspekinginn Khristnamurti, í íslenskri þýðingu Kristins Árnasonar. Kristinn verður gestur okkar í dag. Gauti Kristmannsson verður með okkur og mun flytja fyrsta pistil vetrarins. Í dag ætlar hann að fjalla um tungumál, þjóðir, þjóðernishyggju og þjóðarmorð. Jazzhátíð Reykjavíkur hófst í gær og þangað koma alltaf einhverjir góðir erlendir gestir. Hilmar Jensson gítarleikari mætir til okkar segir frá kollega sínum, bandaríska gítarleikaranum Ralph Towner, sem er gestur Jasshátíðar í Reykjavík og heldur tónleika í Tjarnarbíói annað kvöld. This beautifully introspective and reflective album features two great music masters. Gary Peacock, one of the premier bassists in the history of Jazz and improvised music and classical and 12-string guitarist Ralph Towner. The music here is also quietly intense and belies the fact that only two people are playing and acoustically at that! This wonderful album was recorded in Oslo for ECM Records in May of 1993. The rapport between these two is uncanny and 6 of the 9 selections are Peacock compositions. Towner wrote two and the title track "Oracle" is a co-composition. Regrettably Peacock has now retired from active public playing due to age and hearing loss but Towner is still very active and productive. Oracle is a testament to their great artistry. Enjoy.
More Sunday morning music - this time all the tracks are from the 1970s. In collecting these cuts I discovered two albums that I somehow missed - Kraftwerk - Ralf & Florian and Cluster - Sowiesoso. I have plenty of Kraftwerk & Cluster in my collection but I didn't have those two albums & they are both wonderful. So thanks to Matt for suggesting those two records. Also thanks Matt for suggesting the Nue! track. That one was "new" to me and it fit perfectly. I know the Nick Drake tune was technically not the 1970s but I had already fallen in love with it & put it in the mix before I realized that it was released in 1969. Oh well. I went back and forth about using the Ralph Towner cut. It's a bit too pretty, almost new age-like, but I used to love that song. Along with Eberhard Weber, Towner's Icarus was my introduction into the wonderful world of ECM records back when I was in college. So I had to include it for nostalgia sake. I'm glad I did because it really is a beautiful tune. I wasn't able to squeeze in all of the great suggestions from listeners so I'm definitely going to have to do a second mix with this theme. I really want to work that Kris Kristofferson tune into the next one. And I didn't get a chance to work in Josh's suggestions of electronic library music. I sought out the Monkman album & it's so cool, it just has to be included next time. Too many good tunes left on the cutting room floor! I better get started on the next mix. Enjoy.
