Episode: Sasha Berliner at SFJAZZ — Recontextualizing the VibraphoneIn this episode, we welcome San Francisco native Sasha Berliner, a vibraphonist, composer, and producer whose work serves as a spectral map of contemporary music. Berliner has emerged as a primary voice in the New York scene by deconstructing the traditional boundaries of her instrument, blending a rigorous jazz foundation with the kinetic, "genre-blurring" spirit of the Bay Area.We discuss her journey from rock drumming in Oakland to studying harmony with Stefon Harris, and her current trajectory toward a new "electric" aesthetic inspired by the fusion giants of the 1970s.Bay Area Foundations: Berliner attributes her experimental spirit to growing up within the artistic landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area and her formative years at the Oakland School for the Arts.A Diverse Sonic Upbringing: Her musical identity remains rooted in an eclectic mix of rock, alternative music, and hip-hop. She notes that her father's history in the local punk scene, specifically his work with the band Alice Donut, significantly influenced her approach. The Influence of Stefon Harris: Moving to New York to study with Harris was a pivotal shift. She utilizes his system of relating harmony to specific emotions as a cornerstone of her compositional process, allowing her music to "speak" without the need for lyrics.Recontextualizing the Vibraphone: Berliner actively works to move beyond "antiquated" associations of the vibraphone, creating a sound that reflects modern textures rather than solely adhering to mid-century jazz archetypes. The Electric Evolution: Her upcoming project, slated for late 2026, focuses on an all-electric ensemble featuring synths and electric bass. This direction draws inspiration from groups like Weather Report and The Headhunters, as well as modern innovators like Chris Potter's Circuits Trio. The Dynamics of Leadership: She reflects on the transition from a versatile side player for luminaries like Christian McBride to a bandleader responsible for the logistical and sonic architecture of her own projects.Musical Tracks Featured"Jade" (from the album Onyx): A track Berliner identifies as the "closest relative" to her developing electric project."Zenith" (from the album Fantôme): A piece featuring a distinctive horn arrangement inspired by the collective energy of Stefon Harris's 90 Miles album.Sasha Berliner returns home this week for a double bill with vocalist Michael Mayo at SFJAZZ.The Ensemble: Berliner will lead a quintet featuring Myles Martin (drums), Julio Xavier Chetto (bass), Javier Santiago (piano/keys), and Tristan Cappel (sax/flute).Date: Saturday, December 27, 2025.Time: 7:30 PM.Venue: Miner Auditorium, San Francisco.Tickets: Available at SFJAZZ.org.Keeping Jazz Alive in the 415.

Sam Smith is a composer, arranger, and sought-after bassist based in Boston, MA. He has gained such an insight on the bass that the AuburnPub said that "watching Smith play, the line between bassist and bass blurs." The young bassist looks to always improve himself as an individual musician, as well as with the music that is brought to him by other artists. Smith constantly plays local in the Greater Boston area, and has brought his expertise around the world from the USA to China, The Netherlands, France, and the UK, playing as a sideman and bandleader for many musical projects. The bassist has played at esteemed venues such as Dizzy's Club, Wally's Cafe Jazz Club, and Smalls Jazz Club and has played and/or recorded with the likes of Cassandra Wilson, Ron Blake, Stefon Harris, Joe Magnarelli, Jesus Molina, Aaron Parks, and Terri Lyne Carrington. In the early days of jazz, musicians engaged in group improvisations, creating arrangements on the fly. As bands became larger, the writing down of parts for individual players became a requirement. Present and past jazz arrangers including Stefon Harris, Mike Abene, Ray Conniff, Bill Holman and Frank Foster speak about their craft.

Clearwater Jazz Holiday's History of Jazz Outreach Program engages professional musicians to share the story of Jazz through live, interactive musical experiences. By Spring 2020, the Program had reached nearly 30,000 students in approximately 60 Tampa Bay area schools and has evolved to also bring meaningful experiences to schools and organizations serving at risk students, people of all ages with special needs, neurodiversities, and autism, as well as older adults in senior living communities and memory care centers. Frank T. Williams III, a 40-year + educator, band director, clinician, author, adjudicator, and composer, is a long-time CJH education partner, important to the development of many CJH Outreach programs. In 2020, CJH launched its STOP-TIME SERIES with Frank Williams to complement the History of Jazz Outreach Program by creating a comprehensive visual and audio History of Jazz archive delivered in Frank's one-of-a-kind style. My guest today is the man. Tim Warfield. Legend. He's shared the stage with everyone from Donald Byrd, to Marcus Miller, to Christian McBride, to Shirley Scott, to Nicholas Payton, Charles Fambrough, Terell Stafford, Stefon Harris, Orrin Evans, and that is the extremely abridged version. But what is most impressive to me is how he encourages, energizes, and leads the next generation. Our conversation was super inspiring as we jumped around from various topics including fashion, conquering fear, dealing with the business of music, his unique take on ear training, as well as some nuggets of wisdom from a life spent among the masters. If you haven't checked out his work, I highly recommend his albums Gentle Warrior, Jazzland (his most recent release), and my personal favorite Spherical, his deep dive into the work and genius of Thelonious Sphere Monk.

Vibraphonist Milt Jackson is an acknowledged pioneer of Modern Jazz. Jackson s brought the vibes into the modern era. He was inspired mostly by Lionel Hampton but forged his own concept and sound on that instrument and gave birth and inspiration to people of his era like Terry Gibbs, Joe Roland, Cal Tjader and others and of course influenced the younger players like Gary Burton, Dave Pike and especially Bobby Hutcherson who in turn inspired present day players like Steve Nelson, Stefon Harris and Warren Wolf. Jackson was the most prominent voice of the famous Modern Jazz Quartet who were together for over 40 years. Jackson recorded a lot on his own and this album which is tonight's Jazz Feature is one of his gems. The album is called "Opus De Jazz" and aside from Jackson, the co-star is the great flutist/tenor saxophonist Frank Wess. Frank is on flute for 3 of the 4 tunes and plays tenor saxophone on one. Flute and vibes is a wonderful combination. Jackson and Wess are backed superbly by the elegant Hank Jones on piano, Eddie Jones (no relation) on bass and the great drummer Kenny Clarke. This is a delightful album that could convert the most anti-Jazz listener into a fan. Check out "Opus De Jazz" tonight for the real deal that's also easy on the ears.
If you haven't heard of the Columbia Center for Jazz Studies, that's a shame, but we can't be too disappointed in you. After all, the center is still relatively new. It was founded in 1999 and, since then, it has been integrated into the Core Curriculum at Columbia College. That means a lot of College students are getting exposed to music that isn't exactly topping the charts nowadays. But the Center for Jazz Studies takes a more broad view of the genre than one might initially think. Courses at the center look at jazz as it relates to technology, community, innovation, and even neurology. It's that last approach that you're going to hear about in this episode. You're going to hear vibraphonist Stefon Harris demonstrate jazz improvisation as it relates to issues of mind-brain coordination and creativity. You're also going to periodically hear questions posed by Columbia professor of neuroscience, Michael Shadlen. To find out about upcoming events from The Columbia Center for Jazz Studies, visit jazz.columbia.edu.
