Sam Smith is a composer, arranger, and sought-after bassist based in Boston, MA. He has gained such an insight on the bass that the AuburnPub said that "watching Smith play, the line between bassist and bass blurs." The young bassist looks to always improve himself as an individual musician, as well as with the music that is brought to him by other artists. Smith constantly plays local in the Greater Boston area, and has brought his expertise around the world from the USA to China, The Netherlands, France, and the UK, playing as a sideman and bandleader for many musical projects. The bassist has played at esteemed venues such as Dizzy's Club, Wally's Cafe Jazz Club, and Smalls Jazz Club and has played and/or recorded with the likes of Cassandra Wilson, Ron Blake, Stefon Harris, Joe Magnarelli, Jesus Molina, Aaron Parks, and Terri Lyne Carrington.    Learn more: www.samsmithbass.com

Trying to fit Regina Carter into a neatly defined musical category is pointless. She enjoys performing many styles of music—jazz, R&B, Latin, classical, blues, country, pop, African, and on and on. In each she explores the power of music through the voice of the violin. A recipient of the MacArthur “genius” award and a Doris Duke Artist Award, Regina has been widely hailed for her mastery of her instrument and her drive to expand its possibilities. In 2018 she was named artistic director of the New Jersey Performing Arts All-Female Jazz Residency, a unique summer immersion program for aspiring women jazz professionals. In December of that year she was nominated for a Grammy for Best Improvised Solo for “Some of That Sunshine,” the title track on vocalist Karrin Allyson's album. She is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. Past positions have included artist in residence at the Oakland University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; resident artist for San Francisco Performances; and resident artistic director for SFJAZZ. A winner of multiple readers' and critics' poll awards from DownBeat, JazzTimes, and other publications, Regina tours with her own group and has appeared frequently as a guest soloist, including with such performers as Kenny Barron, the late bassist Ray Brown, Akua Dixon, Steve Turre, Stefon Harris, George Wein, Mary J. Praised for the “breathtaking singing quality of his sound” by jazz icon John McNeil and as a “musician of the highest order” by renowned orchestral trumpeter Charles Daval, Ryan Nielsen’s lyricism and versatility are rare. His artistry grows out of a love of groove, spirit, and beautiful melody. He began performing professionally at 17, and has since been a guest artist at concerts and festivals throughout the United States. Nielsen’s debut album, Gift of Breath (a joint project with his mentor, Ra Kalam Bob Moses) was selected by the New York City Jazz Record as a 2017 Recommended New Release. Ra Kalam, whose previous work was selected by the Smithsonian as a landmark in jazz history, called Gift of Breath, “One of the deepest, most soulful and creative recordings I've ever done.” In 2016, Nielsen was named trumpeter in the Kobie Watkins Grouptet. Perhaps best known for his extensive work with jazz legend, Sonny Rollins, Watkins formed his Grouptet from across the country. Their first album, Movement, was released on Origin Records to international critical acclaim. The Chicago Tribune named it one of the ten best albums of 2018, alongside artists like Joe Lovano, Stefon Harris, Don Byron, and Dave Douglas. As a graduate student at Arizona State University, Nielsen studied with David Hickman and Mike Kocour, and received of the Doc Severinsen award for outstanding classical and jazz trumpet. He went on to pursue doctoral studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied with John McNeil, Ra Kalam Bob Moses, and Tom Rolfs. Nielsen loves teaching students of all ages, and has a reputation as a passionate and inspiring teacher. He is currently Associate Professor of Trumpet at Utah Valley University.

Our conversation was super inspiring as we jumped around from various topics including fashion, conquering fear, dealing with the business of music, his unique take on ear training, as well as some nuggets of wisdom from a life spent among the masters. If you haven't checked out his work, I highly recommend his albums Gentle Warrior, Jazzland (his most recent release), and my personal favorite Spherical, his deep dive into the work and genius of Thelonious Sphere Monk.

Just 23 years old, the vibraphonist recently released his debut album as a leader, KingMaker, and it’s already being hailed by jazz and pop critics alike as one of the best albums of the year. It’s a smart and self-assured statement, full of hypnotic grooves and intricate melodic structures. But the fact that it was released on the legendary Blue Note Records makes it a first impression for the ages. In joining Blue Note, Ross becomes part of a storied lineage of vibraphone players that includes Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson and Ross’ own mentor, Stefon Harris. Elite as that company may be, Ross is eager and equipped to join it. He possesses boundless skill and imagination, and he’s the type of artist who can push the music forward from the inside, merging tradition with innovation in an effort to arrive at someplace new yet familiar. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brian-zimmerman/support

I don't think you can go wrong with him, but the album of his that is my favorite is African Trantella (Dances with Duke), SO SO Good.   Lionel Hampton is a notable historic figure on the same instrument, the Vibraphone. Tableau building is what its called on BGG, we call it Engine building! Definition: "Engine Building" is a genre of board game where players slowly build up a system of generating resources, money, or victory points - typically this engine becomes more efficient as the game goes on, leading to a satisfying sense of achievement when the machine runs at full speed. Here are some of the best engine building board games. From: Boardgameprices.com   There is some considerable discussion on BGG about the term and it is of note that there is NO official entry in the Mechanics page of BGG for “Engine Building”. They have deck/pool building though.   Games we cover this episode in conjunction with engine building in Board Games: Wingspan  By Stonemaier Games Gizmos By CMON Splendor By Space Cowboys Alien Artifacts By Portal Games Scythe By Stonemaier Games Outside the Box - Tabletop games outside the normal scope. Let’s talk about board games on CONSOLES (XBOX, PS4, Switch) We can let our audience know what is available to them. IF you play the TCG, or ANY TCG or like The Joes, or Cobra, or fun or things that are great…..GET THESE SLEEVES. Classic, logo only, action figure blister inspired art. They are REALLY nice. And it's so cool to get something that is practical AND will help you want to play games more!! (yo Joe!) Transformers Sleeves They have both in the original multicolor format and just matte red as I have linked in the notes. I'm sorry, these are a MUST for the Transformers TCG. I mean..seriously?!?! Vibraphonist Milt Jackson is an acknowledged pioneer of Modern Jazz. Jackson s brought the vibes into the modern era. He was inspired mostly by Lionel Hampton but forged his own concept and sound on that instrument and gave birth and inspiration to people of his era like Terry Gibbs, Joe Roland, Cal Tjader and others and of course influenced the younger players like Gary Burton, Dave Pike and especially Bobby Hutcherson who in turn inspired present day players like Steve Nelson, Stefon Harris and Warren Wolf. Jackson was the most prominent voice of the famous Modern Jazz Quartet who were together for over 40 years. Jackson recorded a lot on his own and this album which is tonight's Jazz Feature is one of his gems. The album is called "Opus De Jazz" and aside from Jackson, the co-star is the great flutist/tenor saxophonist Frank Wess. Frank is on flute for 3 of the 4 tunes and plays tenor saxophone on one. Flute and vibes is a wonderful combination. Jackson and Wess are backed superbly by the elegant Hank Jones on piano, Eddie Jones (no relation) on bass and the great drummer Kenny Clarke. This is a delightful album that could convert the most anti-Jazz listener into a fan. Check out "Opus De Jazz" tonight for the real deal that's also easy on the ears.

If you haven't heard of the Columbia Center for Jazz Studies, that's a shame, but we can't be too disappointed in you. After all, the center is still relatively new. It was founded in 1999 and, since then, it has been integrated into the Core Curriculum at Columbia College. That means a lot of College students are getting exposed to music that isn't exactly topping the charts nowadays. But the Center for Jazz Studies takes a more broad view of the genre than one might initially think. Courses at the center look at jazz as it relates to technology, community, innovation, and even neurology. It's that last approach that you're going to hear about in this episode. You're going to hear vibraphonist Stefon Harris demonstrate jazz improvisation as it relates to issues of mind-brain coordination and creativity. You're also going to periodically hear questions posed by Columbia professor of neuroscience, Michael Shadlen. In the world of Jazz musicians have a plan going into the song, but the role of the band is to take a note and make it into something beautiful.
