Former Entertainment Weekly editor Mark Harris was an editor and journalist for publications like The New York Times, Fortune, The Guardian, and Slate, until he dared himself to submit a book proposal on his 40th birthday. These days, he’s best known for his entertainment-based books, such as Pictures at a Revolution: Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood, Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War, and his latest book, Mike Nichols: A Life. In this interview, Harris talks about his career as an editor, how he chooses subjects worthy of a book such as Director Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Charlie Wilson’s War), how he uses the Bird by Bird approach, and how he and his husband Tony Kushner (Munich, Lincoln) encourage each other as writers of different mediums. Currently, Harris is working with Turner Classic Film Festival to introduce Nichol’s first movie, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) and a documentary called Nichols and May, a story about Nichols’ life before he became a Director, as an improv comedy group. To guide viewers through the different personalities, interweaving chronologies and globe-trotting locales, the Five Came Back team turned to the voices of five modern cinematic masters: Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo Del Toro, Paul Greengrass and Lawrence Kasdan. Three-time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep provides the narration for Five Came Back.On this episode of THE ANNOTATOR, Jeremy Turner talks about: the five motifs he wrote for each of the 5 central figures, how they evolve and change along with the experiences of the 5 directors and lastly how he used silence to give the moments of score even greater impact.ANNOTATED TRACKS03:32 - Track - “Prelude”08:53 - Track - “Willie and Lester”11:26 - Track - “Anne Frank”13:00 - Track - “Wonderful”OTHER TRACKS00:00 - Track - "Forgotten Man” 01:04 - Track - "Capra Goes to Washington”01:48 - Track - “Euro Stevens"17:18 - Track - "Isolationism"FIVE CAME BACK SOUNDTRACKNo release information is currently available.MORE ABOUT THE COMPOSERYou can find out and hear more music by JEREMY TURNER at his official website HEARJT.COM ABOUT THE ANNOTATORProduced by Christopher Coleman (@ccoleman) and you can Find more episodes at THEANNOTATOR.NET or you can subscribe via iTunes, Stitcher Radio or wherever you find quality podcasts.FOLLOW USTwitter @audioannotatorFacebook @TheAnnotatorEmail theannotatorpodcast@gmail.comSUBSCRIBEiTunesStitcher RadioGoogle Play PodcastsRSS Feed

This past Friday saw the release of Five Came Back, a three-part documentary series adapted from Mark Harris' great book "Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War", which recounts the story of five legendary Hollywood directors - Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston, George Stevens, William Wyler - who left their careers behind and spent World War II making documentaries and propaganda for the U.S. military, in the process creating a series of films which shaped how audiences understood the war, and marked a significant development in the history of documentary filmmaking. The experience also took its toll on the filmmakers, leaving them scarred and having a profound impact on their work and lives. Can you imagine if immediately after 9/11, filmmakers like Scorsese, Spielberg, Coppola, Fincher or Apatow would enlist in the military to make films about the war on terror?  Films that would show America at war against its Taliban and Middle East enemies.  Well with  the exception of Clint Eastwood, that's pretty hard to imagine.Yet in WWII, that's exactly what happened.  Filmmakers John Ford, William Wyler, Frank Capra, John Houston, and George Stevens would in various ways, join with the military in the war effort.  The work that they did, the impact it had on them personally and on the country, would forever change the workings of Hollywood. It emphasized the importance of film as entertainment and as an art form, as well as how Americans viewed war.  In that sense, those images still shape our perceptions today as they are a part of our cultural and political DNA.Mark Harris takes us though the war work of these great Directors in Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World WarMy conversation with Mark Harris:

During World War II, five of Hollywood's star directors, whose names had been behind some of the biggest box office hits and Oscar winners, dropped their entire careers to go to war. Their goal was not to fight, but to document. Besides being the only Oscar columnist worth reading, Mark Harris is now the author or Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War. In this podcast, Mark and Peter sit down to discuss this essential read, examining the relationship between Hollywood and the government, the problem of realism and re-creations, and the pains felt by men who returned to a system that seemed to have forgotten them. Finally, the two discuss William Wyler's The Best Years of Our Lives, a universal drama that has numerous touches of the director's own war experience. 0:00-1:35 Opening2:33-8:06 Establishing Shots - William Freidkin's Sorcerer8:50-1:26:40 Deep Focus - Mark Harris1:27:53-1:46:58 Double Exposure - The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler)1:47:02-1:48:41 Close
