Matt Damon as Jason Bourne is back in the first of many sequels! This time he has to try and remember all of his memories by tracking down another old man who made him do a Treadstone. It's got action! A car chase! More things from the first movie! It also has Paul Greengrass taking over directorial duties with a script sort of from Andor's Tony Gilroy. His memoir ‘To Hell With Poverty!' rightly describes itself as “rich with stories”, many remembered in this spirited exchange with David and Mark, among them … … the transformational effect of a scholarship to the boarding school where he met GO4 guitarist Andy Gill and future film-makers Adam Curtis and Paul Greengrass. … life-changing records he heard in the school art department – Highway 61 Revisited, the Stooges, the MC5. … “never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity”. … aged 11, bumping into John Lennon in Sevenoaks who'd just bought his Mr Kite poster. … signing a contract with the manager that robbed them and whose busy and efficient office of “ripped and buffed” staff turned out to be hired actors. … being thrown off Top Of The Pops for not changing an ‘offensive' song lyric – “EMI were “mortified”. … the old hippy world of the ‘70s – Hawkwind, the Whole Earth Catalog and “a Withnailesque flat where we had an airgun to shoot the mice”. … hopeless online misinterpretations of his song lyrics - “there may be soil under fuck all” (aka “there may be oil under Rockall”). … the rigours of trying to promote “outsider music”. … reaching “the point where the game is up”. … the Bourgeois Brothers, the ‘comedy' duo he formed with Andy Gill at Leeds University and why they returned to England to form a band in the mould of Talking Heads, the Ramones and Richard Hell. … and why recording the audiobook moved him to tears. Order ‘To Hell With Poverty!' here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hell-Poverty-Class-Inside-Gang/dp/1636142346 Gang Of Four tour dates:https://www.songkick.com/artists/393675-gang-of-four/calendarFind out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Paul Greengrass' UNITED 93 came out less than 5 years after the tragedy and was the first Hollywood film to dramatize the day that many people weren't sure needed dramatized. We'll discuss what recreating the attacks means today as well as back in 2006, and then consider the other end of the spectrum: 2017's simply titled 9/11, a chamber drama starring a post-TWO AND A HALF MEN Charlie Sheen trapped in an elevator in the World Trade Center. Welcome to the 5th episode of our Trilogies series. We hope you enjoyed our last episode where we looked at Jack Ryan Trilogy both starring Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford as the titular character. On this episode, we look back at another espionage film franchise which is little bit of the opposite of the world seen in the Jack Ryan films. Something that is a little more dark, mysterious, dangerous and not as black and white. A world that is grey. We are going to be looking at the original Bourne Trilogy. The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and finally The Bourne Ultimatum. Before the studio heads decided to try and milk these films with a not so well received spin-off sidequel starring Jeremy Renner and then resorting to bring back Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in 2016, the original three Bourne Films really defined action cinema in the early to mid 2000s. Highly influential in regards its bleak and nuanced look at the US Government and Special Intelligence agencies, plus it's stylistic and visual approach to action cinematography. Shaky Cam was born with these films. We hope you continue to enjoy this new Trilogies Series we're doing and we also hope you enjoy this episode. Hollywood tried for years to turn this into a film, with directors such as Paul Greengrass, Terry Gilliam and more attached. In the end, Snyder, who was coming off of another ambitious graphic novel adaptation, Frank Miller's 300, was the one who made it work. Boasting a unique cast of character actors and a period 1980's setting, Snyder made a mostly faithful adaptation that was attacked by some critics, hated by others, and divided fans. In this episode, we dig into the film's origins and reception.

This week's guest is an Emmy winner, a Grammy winner, and a nine-time Oscar nominee, whose scores have graced the big and small screens since the 1980s. James Newton Howard is the voice of many of your favorite scores, from co-scoring the Dark Knight Trilogy with Hans Zimmer to his Oscar-nominated score for Paul Greengrass' News of the World. Now, he's back with several new projects, some of which hearken back to music he has written in the past.   Howard's latest solo album, Night After Night, is a beautiful look back at his eight-film partnership with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, recontextualizing some of his most intriguing melodies from that longtime collaboration into piano-driven suites performed by virtuoso musicians, including concert pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.   On the small screen, Howard recently completed a lush, yearning score for Netflix's new miniseries All the Light We Cannot See, based on the acclaimed novel by Anthony Doerr and directed by Shawn Levy. Plus, after nearly a decade away from Panem, Howard resumes his collaboration with director Francis Lawrence for the Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Now, Howard is here on the pod to talk about all of these projects and more.   You can find James Newton Howard at his official website here.   Night After Night is currently available on vinyl or your preferred streaming service, courtesy of Sony Masterworks.  Same with All the Light You Cannot See, courtesy of Netflix Music, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, care of Sony Music.

Attack the roles that are easy to get, make your name, and once you've made a mark, tell your agent, Hey, give me some opportunities that I can use to stretch myself creatively.Actor and Director Maximilian Carlo Martini was born in New York. His father was a Roman sculptor and Doctor of Philosophy and Phenomenology, and his mother was a law enforcement officer in Texas. Curiously enough, Max Martini's trajectory in Hollywood was strongly influenced by both parents, his father instilling curiosity for all things creative, and his mother inspiring him for law enforcement and military roles, in which he made his name on the big screen. A few frustrating experiences as a young actor got Max coming in and out of acting, so he decided to focus on his love for fine arts and attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, where he received his BFA in painting and sculpture. After college, although he was working on movies and TV, he wasn't emotionally invested in becoming a successful actor. With that mindset, he disdainfully attended a casting and landed his first massive role in the movie "Contact" with Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, and James Wood, directed by Robert Zemeckis. Max starred in Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy, David Mamet's "Red Belt," Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim," and Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips," and the TV series "The Purge," to name some titles of his extensive career. He is also heavily involved in charitable work benefiting veterans and works closely with Warriors Heart Addiction and PTSD Treatment Center and the Special Operations Charity Network.Throughout this episode, you'll hear about Max's upbringing and relationship with acting, which initially had several ups and downs. You'll also hear how identifying his castability catapulted Max's career and his thoughts on self-tapes, AI, and negative feedback. In addition, Max shares valuable tips on how to own a room during auditions, how he would approach the industry if he were a young actor today, and much more.Tune in to Episode 93 of Hollywood Dream Maker and get Max's precious insight on how to make your mark in Hollywood. While United 93 avoids politics, we sure got political during this 535th episode. But the whole world supposedly changed on this very day 22 years ago and we felt the need to comment on that and what such upheaval has meant to all of our lives. More than 3000 people died during the terrorist attacks on 9/11, but our "civil" society quickly became more divided than ever. As such, we HYES'ers dealt with our complicated feelings about that horrible day, including talking about what "cowardice" and "heroism" really mean. As for the the movie itself, it's dynamite. Paul Greengrass' intense docudrama takes place (mostly) in real time and stars character actors and also people playing themselves. Greengrass uses a shaky cam and a "you are there" verisimilitude to put us in the middle of the mess as the airline passengers fight back against 4 terrorists who are determined to kill. Whatever your politics were then or are now, we can all agree that United 93 is a tremendously effective motion picture about a group of people who were legitimate heroes. Zack Snyder's Watchmen was relatively well-received by fans and overall was a box office success. Devoted to making a faithful adaptation of the Alan Moore/ Dave Gibbons graphic novel, the fact that Snyder's Watchmen film got made on the scale it did is a miracle. However, several other versions of Watchmen were in the works before Snyder got involved, with several coming close to being made. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Unmade Movie, we dig into versions that almost got made involving folks such as Terry Gilliam, David Hayter (who filmed a demo reel with Ray Stevenson and Rorschach and Iain Glen as Nite Owl), Darren Aronofsky and Paul Greengrass. Suppose any of these versions had gotten made. In that case, we might have gotten someone like Paddy Considine as Rorschach, Joaquin Phoenix as Nite Owl, and possibly even Tom Cruise as Ozymandias (in which case the adaptation likely would have had little to do with Moore's comic). In the end, perhaps it was best that no one succeeded in getting the movie made until Snyder, with it also paving the way for the excellent HBO limited series and maybe some future Watchmen stories to come.

In his first western, Tom Hanks plays an itinerant news reader from Texas who tries to transport a young girl who was an Indian captive to her relatives. The traditional conventions of the western presuppose a lot of assumptions about America that we've since learned are untrue or at least are much more complex. English director Paul Greengrass, now established as a prominent Hollywood filmmaker, has crafted a western that emphasizes different aspects of the West than we're used to—based on a Paulette Giles novel and starring Tom Hanks, it's called News of the World. The title comes from an interesting premise. Hanks plays a Civil War veteran, Captain Jefferson Kidd, who scrapes together a tenuous living by going from town to town, reading stories from national newspapers to public gatherings, for which he charges a dime a person. I immediately wondered if this was a real thing that people did back then, and it turns out that it is. There was a real Captain Kidd, one of the author's ancestors, who did just that. Americans in isolated western towns didn't have much opportunity to learn what was happening in other places or nationally. Hanks's character has a clear and simple delivery; he's providing an education, but he lends the reading enough drama to make it entertaining as well. We then see the Captain on the road in Texas, where by chance he finds a little white girl hiding in an overturned wagon, but only speaking Kiowa. Eventually he pieces together the truth: she was taken by the Indian tribe after her parents were killed. Now this is one case where an old western theme is being employed. There were Indian captivities, but the consensus now is that they became famous beyond their frequency, which means, in other words, that the captivity stories were sensationalized. In this film it's a plot element that is not lent much resonance. In any case, the girl, Johanna, played by 11-year-old Helena Zengel, thinks of herself as Kiowa, doesn't want to be taken into white society, and is suspicious of Captain Kidd. He tries to get her turned over to authorities, but meeting resistance, decides to take the girl himself to her surviving relatives in southeast Texas. He's a fundamentally decent person, which we expect from a Tom Hanks character, but the film wisely places his decency in the context of war weariness and regret—he seems to have left a wife in San Antonio, under dark circumstances that we don't learn about until later. As the Captain and the young girl travel together, they encounter serious threats, from some ex-soldiers who want to buy the girl from the Captain, and from a racist outlaw officer basically running a Texas county on behalf of his gang—a menacing situation when he takes a dislike to Kidd. The vision of the West presented by News of the World is of a very dangerous place in which men's worst instincts come to the fore. This isn't a time of romance or glory or even the pioneer spirit—this is a painful and difficult time. And it gives the film a dark edge, but the remarkable aspect is how Kidd gradually makes the girl feel safe, and in the process starts to have parental-like feelings for her, feelings of which he is only partly conscious. I tried to remember some other western with Tom Hanks, and I couldn't, because it turns out that this is his first western. His personality fits so well into the genre that it seems as if he's been acting in them for years. He's worked with Greengrass before, as another captain, Captain Phillips, and just like in that movie, the director displays a talent for depicting people in extreme situations. In News of the World he gives us some tense and exciting scenes—this is someone who also directed a

Today we chat with someone who bends light and shadows to sculpt a beautiful frame. He's also an Academy Award nominee for Cinematography! His name is Dariusz Wolski and he was nice enough to join us on The B-Side to discuss his recent, nominated work on Paul Greengrass' News of the World (now available to own on Blu-Ray and 4K), his current Ridley Scott projects The Last Duel and House of Gucci, and the whole of his impressive career. Other highlights include Romeo is Bleeding, Dark City, A Perfect Murder, and The Counselor. Wolski discusses breaking into the cinematography world by making music videos with artists like Alex Proyas and David Fincher, and then parlaying what they learned into making feature films. On the topic of A Perfect Murder (an adaptation of Hitchcock's Dial M For Murder), Wolski talks about how not to remake a movie when you're remaking a movie. On the difference between film and digital cameras, he's refreshingly candid about the evolution of technology: “If you have a better brush and better paint, why not use it?” Referenced in this interview is a wonderful talk he had with fellow cinematographer Shelly Johnson and a curated collection of moments from his commentary on Dark City.
