The NFL Season is moving along and so are we. In this episode of the NFL Historical Matchups for Week 11, we have four games that we are highlighting. The first one may be one of the most famous and the most important games in NFL History. It may not have been a classic as for as a close game or having a fantastic finish, but Super Bowl III between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Jets helped create the current NFL.It was more than the biggest upset in Super Bowl history, it added legitimacy to the upstart American Football League as the merger between the AFL and NFL was on the horizon. The second game was the 1981 AFC Championship game between the San Diego Chargers and the Cincinnati Bengals. The game played in conditions that were better suited for the Iditarod Sled dog race in Alaska, saw the Bengals advance to their first Super Bowl by winning the game known as the "Freezer Bowl".The third game we are remembering was referenced in a Sports Illustrated article that previewed the game at the time as Super Bowl 8 1/2 .But after it was over, the game had earned another name that has lived on to this day. The 1974 AFC Divisional playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and the Oakland Raiders is remembered as the "Sea of Hands Game". Rounding out our games that we are looking back on is the 1966 AFL Championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. The Bills were looking to win their third consecutive AFL Championship game but more importantly play in the inaugural Super Bowl. But it would be the Chiefs that would advance to the first Super Bowl in a muddy, cold day at the stadium known as the Rockpile. They additionally look at some of the Wild Card Playoff matchups that are coming this weekend. (27:26-41:18) – In the opening segment of the show, Jake and Jimmy highlighted the AFC playoff games and issued them a star rating. They do the same thing now with the NFC playoff games. This leads to a debate between Jake and Jimmy. (41:18-45:48) – Hour one concludes with Jake quizzing Jimmy and Eddie what division NBA teams are in because of how irrelevant divisions are now in the NBA. (45:48-1:13:47) – Sports Illustrated NFL writer Matt Verderame joins Query & Company to preview this weekend's NFL Wild Card playoff matchups, weighs in on the debate between the Buccaneers/Eagles and Steelers/Bills that Jake and Jimmy had, accesses what the Indianapolis Colts need to do this offseason to help build around Anthony Richardson, why he was impressed with the Colts when he stopped by Indianapolis during training camp, and reveals which positions are deep with talent in free agency along with which positions don't have a lot of talent. (1:13:47-1:26:23) – With the Pacers starting their road trip tonight in Atlanta, Jake and Jimmy share some of the things that they want to see from the team without Tyrese Haliburton during this road trip. They also detail what kind of record they want the team to have during this important stretch without their best player. Ā Ā Ā  (1:26:23-1:32:29) – The one o'clock hour concludes with the Jake talking about some of the trolls that are in his mentions. Plus, he asks for the coldest temperatures in the Ice Bowl and Freezer Bowl because he feels like the temperatures drop by 20 degrees each year. (1:32:29-1:59:53) – Co-host of the Wake Up Call with KB & Andy in Kevin Bowen joins Jake and Jimmy to share his thoughts of what Chris Ballard said yesterday in comparison to a year ago, if he thinks the signing of Matt Gay was a failure based off of him being one of the worst kickers in percentage, accesses how much he thinks it will cost the Colts to retain Kenny Moore, shares what kind of approach Chris Ballard will have this go around in free agency, and examines this weekend's playoff games. (1:59:53-2:10:58) – During our conversation with KB, it was announced that Washington's Kalen DeBoer will be leaving the Huskies program to replace Nick Saban at Alabama. They wonder if DeBoer was the Crimson Tide's first choice and try to decipher why he would leave Washington after building up the program to a championship level in just two years. (2:10:58-2:19:10) – Today's show ends with the JCook Plays of the Day, and JMV hopping on for a couple minutes to share his thoughts on the Wild Card matchups this weekend and explaining why he doesn't like Arrowhead Stadium.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals get ready to host the Las Vegas Raiders in the playoffs, In The Trenches with Dave Lapham presented by First Star Logistics takes a look back to January 10, 1982, when Lapham and his Bengals teammates led by quarterback Ken Anderson and head coach Forrest Gregg, took on Don Coryell, Dan Fouts, and the San Diego Chargers in the coldest game played in NFL history when adding in wind chill, -9 but with sustained winds of 27 miles per hour making it -37. With three future NFL Hall of Fame players taking the field for the Chargers in Fouts, receiver Charlie Joiner and tight end Kellen Winslow, it was Anderson and the play of Dan Ross, Pete johnson, Reggie Williams, Jim Breech, Rick Razzano, M.L. Harris, and other Bengals to come out on top in the AFC Championship Game 27-7 to advance to the first Super Bowl in franchise history. Lapham takes a look back at the days leading up to the game with how head coach Forrest Gregg used his past of playing in the Ice Bowl for Vince Lombardi to get the Bengals ready and what the offensive linemen did on game day to hopefully give them a slight advantage over the Chargers. You're going to love this trip down memory lane.

Episode 229 As the third most accurate placekicker in NFL history at the time of his retirement, Rolf Benirschke had an illustrious 10-year career with the San Diego Chargers. The Pro Bowl kicker was named the 1983 Walter Payton Man of the Year and 11 years after retiring, he was inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame. In his second NFL season, Benirschke was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. He would be forced to embark on a journey that would lead to deep despair and self-discovery. It would require four major abdominal surgeries and challenge his very life before returning him to the highest of heights. Rolf played in 3 of the greatest games in NFL history, "The Holy Roller" of 1978, "The Epic in Miami" in January 1982, and "The Freezer Bowl" one week later, also in January 1982. On this inspiring episode of the podcast, we talk to Rolf about being a kicker, the mentality of rebounding after a big missed field goal, coming to faith in Christ during his NFL career, playing in 2 of the greatest playoff games in back-to-back weeks in January 1982, and overcoming life-threatening illnesses to return to the NFL and ultimately use his story to encourage others.
