We review King Hu's Dragon Inn (1967), a period tale about a cohort of heroic warriors fighting to protect the innocent from the shadowy forces of an evil Eunuch, that showcases a graceful interplay between characters, landscape, editing and compositional form that elevate it above other works in the wuxia genre. Tune in the for the full review! Timestamps: [00:00] Intro + City Hunter, Mononoke, Jade Trilogy book series, and G-Fest 2024 report [33:35] Review - Dragon Inn
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the longest MIFV episode ever (of all time), Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna of the Godzilla Novelization Project (no surprise why it's long) to discuss the most underestimated of G-films: Godzilla vs. Gigan (aka Godzilla on Monster Island). They discuss every possible aspect of this film, from its under-funded production to its quirky yet iconic dub and everything in between—and we do mean everything. But the most surprising part of this epic episode is Nate and Danny's discussion of the historical context in which it was made—a time of market penetration by foreign corporations and the explosion of the popularity of theme parks—the fascinating unmade drafts of its script written by both Shinichi Sekizawa and Takeshi Kimura, and the brilliant meta commentary it makes on Godzilla as a pop culture icon. “There's something funny going on” in today's episode of MIFV! Here's the Sekizawa and Kimura panel Danny and I hosted at G-Fest 2019: https://youtu.be/D3fROnC-Sso?si=SJjlQ5kie_XYuDRA. Jimmy's Notes on this episode COMING SOON! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In this epic livestream audio (and rare public MIFV MAX episode), Nathan is joined by his friend, MIFV MAX member Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) to discuss G-Fest 28. This was the convention's second year at the Hyatt in Rosemont, Illinois—and it's most attended ever with estimates as high as five-thousand! Nathan was on four panels and Daniel six; they met several guests, including Don Frye, Linda Jo Miller, T.J. Storm, and Yumiko Shaku; and they got into all kinds of other shenanigans (“My nipples will be avenged!”). So, whether you missed the con or were present, sit down, relax, and enjoy hearing two friends talk about a magical weekend with fellow kaiju fans. It's G-Fest versus San Diego Comic-Con. Monsters in the Midwest versus SoCal Kaiju. G-Fans versus sun tans. Our hosts discuss their recent trips to these beloved events and compare notes on all facets of the convention experience. “The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu” Jacob Walsh headed westward to try and tackle the biggest beast in the battle, the mecca of media news and the pinnacle of pop culture and celebrity – San Diego Comic-Con. He talks about his experience as press and thoughts on all of the huge news, reveals, and teases from Mondo, Super7, Mezco, Toho, and more. “The Mayor of Toku Toy Town” left the comforts of his soft vinyl home and ventured back to his old stomping grounds – Chicago – for a weekend of rubber suited madness! Jay enlightens us on his top moments from G-Fest – from the panels to the vendor hall, from meeting friends to meeting tokusatsu celebrities. Both provide a nice glimpse into what each of these gatherings are like – warts and all! But those weren't the only two major events over the past few weeks…Tokusatsu DNA 2022 and Wonder Festival 2022 Summer both happened in Japan and produced a kaiju-sized quantity of new toy reveals from X-Plus, Sarujirushi, PassionTank, M1, U.S.TOYS, Marusan, and many more!
Sounds like Mark Matzke had some Godzilla-sized fun at () this year! He spent some time with Derek this week talking about his convention experience, and by the time the conversation was over, Derek bumped "Attend G-FEST" a bit higher up on his bucket list. Plus, Mark can't be stopped since he also has a Beta Capsule Review this week, and we get some kaiju-flavored Kenny with is Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland as well! We are joined by frequent guest host Kevin Derendorf and special guest Justin Mullis to take a deep dive into Toei's 1966 fantasy/kaiju mash-up The Magic Serpent! Since the film is an adaptation of the folk tale of Jiraiya, we discuss the origins and history of the character as well. Byrd and Kevin also recap the highlights of this year's G-Fest convention including the panels, the guests, the films shown, and more! But first we have some news, including the latest on the Monsterverse and the trailer for the Thai kaiju film The Lake.

Episode 68 is unfortunately delayed until next week, but I didn't want to leave you without “new” content, Kaiju Lovers! Given that this weekend is G-Fest XXVII, the oldest and arguably biggest kaiju convention in North America, it was appropriate that I share the audio from the latest “Chill with Kaiju Kim” livestream. I was one of several guests who discussed the con. You'll hear me promote the five panels I'll be on, among other things. If you're on your way to the convention, this is great listening! Enjoy! Mothra changed the game in 1961, nudging Toho’s monster movies in the direction of fantasy and fun. With 16 films under her wings, second only to Godzilla himself, her place in monster movie history is firmly established. This episode provides an overview of the kaiju queen, looking back at the original 1961 epic, going behind the scenes of its making and summarizing the original story treatment. It also features an abbreviated version of an interview with Kyoko Kagawa, who starred in “Mothra” and a number of other significant Japanese films by directors such as Kurosawa and Ozu. Oh man, was this a different kind of show this time! Usually I sit at the table with my audio equipment and have everything all planned out and hit record, do the show, maybe spend a little time editing and then it up, into the ionosphere (or whatever we’re calling the internet these days). But […]
