The conversation touches on the film's themes, such as the insignificance of personal problems against global threats, and critiques the marketing strategies that may have contributed to its underwhelming box office results. For this episode, we go back to the original story of a legend: Godzilla, King of the Monsters! I was today years old when I learned that this film was actually two productions spliced into one! The original Toho movie, Godzilla, was later combined with Americanized footage shot two years later. Actor Raymond Burr later claimed to have filmed his scenes in only one day. Come aboard as we discuss this film as an origin story for one cinema's biggest icons: Godzilla. Does this installment make a good entry point in the series? We'll also cover where the character went from here, and current and future plans for the Godzilla franchise. Co-host Travis Budd is a superfan of this entire genre, so you won't want to miss his thoughts. Finally, we'll rate Godzilla as a standalone experience, and whether it's worth the watch at all. To pair, we'll enjoy a Japanese neutral spirit, made from rice! At 25%, it may've been a little too delicious. #godzilla #monsters #toho #sake

We're continuing our MonsterVerse commentaries with 2019's Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. Normally these descriptions are more enthusiastic, but we are not feeling enthusiastic after that movie. We love Godzilla, but this movie might not be his finest hour. THE ONE MOVIE YOU CAN USE THE "FOR THE FANS" ARGUMENT FOR! Legendary kept us all waiting with baited breath to see what would come next for everyone's favorite irradiated lizard after the monumental success of Gareth Edwards' 2014 reboot. Unfortunately, it would take another five whole years to see the fruits of their labor, especially with Edwards stepping off and longtime Godzilla fan Michael Dougherty. This film sought to bring in more Toho monsters, classic themes, bigger monster fights, more world-building, everything you could want in a sequel. What resulted was arguably the most divisive entry in the MonsterVerse, with many loving the film for what it is, while others find the flaws too glaring to ignore. So, after five more years for the dust to settle, how does this monster mash hold up? Come watch with Brian and Alec to find out as they continue the Godzillathon with the one of the biggest entries yet - Godzilla: King of the Monsters!
Who's ready for some giant monster fights? Come on down to VGU's premiere retrospective podcast starring Graydon Webb and DJ Risio, as they navigate through Legendary's MonsterVerse films and piece together this Monarch mystery! Each week, they will re-watch and discuss another film (or two), leading up to the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on March 28, 2024! Week two brings us to the 2019 epic, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Arguably the best film in the MonsterVerse so far, we had so many notes it filled a whole episode! Join us as we discuss the goddess that is Mothra, the nightmare that is Boston, and the beauty of the Kingsman franchise, in all its predictable glory. Editor's Note: This episode had some wonky audio issues. We both start fairly loud, DJ gets quiet at times, and Graydon's audio gets choppy randomly. In our first stab at Legendary's Monsterverse, we tackle 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is really just a shiny American remake of Invasion of the Astro-Monster, Destroy All Monsters, and All Monsters Attack except there are no aliens dressed like a New Wave band and nuclear radiation is net positive for the environment. We've got our favorite Godzilla autist Andy from Those Good Old Fashioned Values back to talk all about our big favorite guy and why this movie isn't good. At least Nicole's home turf of Boston gets razed in the climax. Too bad you can't see much of it through all the CG snow/rain/fog. Brought to you by Murk-O-Vision! *Yes, we'll go back and do Kong: Skull Island when we hit 2020 and COVID makes it so there were only three movies to talk about for the entire year. If you've been wanting to walk in the world of monsters and bad reviewers - you're in the right place! This week we have yet another very special episode as we welcome back a legendary guest of the show's… and that's our good monster buddy Big Liz (aka Godzilla). He's back in one of his better outings with Godzilla: King of the Monsters! With several of his monster friends and foes being released all around the globe, it's up to a small group of monster hunters and scientists to help G-Man defeat the baddies and reign as king once again. I've said it before and I'll probably say it again and again… I absolutely love monster movies! They are nowhere near perfect or some of the best movies there ever were, but man, they are just so dang fun. This has to be one of my favorite big monster flicks of all time with not only the number of monsters we get to see or the fantastic fights and visuals, but just how well they keep our beloved, big, baddies in the limelight for most of the movie. While some may argue there was no plot, poor dialogue and the worst character development, I just have one thing to say to them - I'm here for the MONSTERS! Can Godzilla defeat Ghidora, reclaim his crown as king and drop a monster royal rumble on these bad reviewers? Tune in to find out! If you enjoyed the episode, please rate and share! It goes such a long way and I am so grateful for all of the support. And hey, if you do leave a review of the show, you will be featured as well! How neat is that? Also, be sure to give my official Ko-Fi page a gander. There you can get access to all kinds of cool perks and prizes from your very own shoutout on the show to choosing which movie I cover next.
