Composer Ian Wilson's ten-movement piece Orpheus Down is inspired by the story of Orpheus' journey to the Underworld to bring his lover Eurydice back from the dead. Have you ever been mesmerised by the lilting sound of a flute in an orchestra? On this week's Talking Flutes 'Revisited' podcast episode, Clare had the pleasure over a dodgy Zoom line with Gareth Davis, the principal flautist of the London Symphony Orchestra. His candid conversation takes us on a journey through the high notes and low notes of a professional musician's life. Gareth Davis is not just a master of his craft; he's also a storyteller whose early days were filled with music and family singalongs, setting the stage for a remarkable career. His story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance in the face of adversity. From his initial rejection by major music colleges to becoming a leading figure in the classical music world, Gareth's narrative is as inspiring as it is instructive. In this episode, you'll learn about the nuances of flute playing, the importance of musical phrasing, and the rigours of auditioning for a World Class orchestra like the LSO. Gareth doesn't shy away from discussing the challenges he faced, including feeling like an imposter and navigating the competitive world of classical music. But it's not all about the struggles. Gareth's love for music shines through as he talks about his influential teachers, like the remarkable Evelyn Frank, who taught him about the beauty of tone and the importance of colour in music. He also delves into the technical aspects of playing the flute, emphasising the importance of intonation, rhythm, and context in a performance. Perhaps most compelling is Gareth's perspective on life beyond music. He shares his hobbies, his approach to physical and mental well-being, and the balancing act between a demanding career and a fulfilling personal life. So, grab your favourite pair of headphones and settle in for an episode that's sure to enlighten and entertain. Whether you're an aspiring musician, a seasoned pro, or simply a lover of beautiful music, Gareth Davis's insights will resonate with you. His story is a reminder that while the path to success is rarely a straight line, it is often the twists and turns that make the journey worthwhile. Don't miss out on this intimate look into the life of a musician who has mastered the art of making the flute sing. Tune in now and let the melody of Gareth's story inspire your own musical adventures. 'Talking Flutes', 'Talking Flutes Extra', 'Bitesize' and 'Revisited' are podcast productions by the TJ flute company.  For more information visit www.tjflutes.com

For our fourth instalment, Richard Skelton and Phantom Limb Publishing are bringing us a psychogeographical mix. British musician and sound artist Richard Skelton has been exploring the natural world, its cycles of life and decay and our relationship with landscape and human-constructed spaces with experimental atmospheres. Skelton has just published his latest album, Border Ballads (Corble Stone Press). After spending the last two years living in the rural northern edge of the Scotland-England border, a boundary demarcated by various watercourses, this hinterland topography has informed a series of musical recordings, twelve miniatures fragments of a larger whole, such is their unity in tone and timbre. For this mix Skelton shares that this mix is loosely constructed around absences, vacancies, and dereliction. The image of a deserted church, now falling into disrepair, located deep in the north Cumbrian interior: I pass by the building on a regular basis as I traverse the labyrinthine back roads between Scotland and England. Fittingly, therefore, all the music in this mix is sourced from vinyl — the ever-present sound of cracks and pops attesting to a kind of degraded materiality. Perhaps predictably, the first recording that came to mind was Nico’s ‘No One Is There’ — a favourite song with a haunting melody, and my selection moved out from there, looking for records that had similar resonances, regardless of their provenance or genre. I was therefore interested to discover overlaps between the Baroque inflections of Boismortier’s ‘Concerto for 5 Tenor Recorders’ and the synthetic swells of Vainqueur’s ‘Elevation’, or the howling sonorities of Gareth Davis’ clarinet and Jandek’s cracked harmonica. The whole mix is held together by the rich field recordings of Joshua Bonnetta’s ‘What Lies in It’, which itself is a document of a Californian ghost resort, Salton Sea. In turn, various segues are made with Alan Lomax’s recordings of human voices, many of which crackle and blur with their own disintegrating physicality. These are various documents of (primarily North American) languages and dialects: Blood (00:50, Stoney (07:50, Beaver (17:48, English (25:45 & 36:00, Achumawi (48:45)and Nenet (54:05). Given this proliferation of languages, in the end, Nico herself has gone — vanishing through the cracks in her own song to leave only its refrain, looping eternally. Tracklist: 00:00 Joshua Bonnetta — What Lies in It (Shelter Press) 01:05 Tirath Singh Nirmala & Richard Youngs — A2 (Untitled) (HP Cycle) 05:40 Stephen Vitiello — Shake (Farpoint Recordings) 19:05 Baby Ford — New York (Rhythm King) 19:37 Gareth Davis & Steven R Smith — Westering (Important) 23:46 Jandek — Harmonica (Corwood Industries) 29:06 Félicia Atkinson — The Owls (Umor Rex) 36:35 Nico — No One Is There (Refrain) (WEA) 39:00 Musica Dolce — Concerto for 5 Tenor Recorders in D Minor (Adagio) (Grammofonfirma BIS) 40:30 Vainqueur — Elevation (Version 3) (Chain Reaction) 50:10 Jessika Kenney & Eyvind Kang — Orcus Pellicano (Editions Mego) 55:00 Joshua Bonnetta — What Lies in It (Shelter Press)

Next year the label will mark its 10-year anniversary, with the appropriate celebrations starting earlier, taking place this year at STUK, Leuven and FLUISTER, Dordrecht in BE/NL on October 9th and 10th featuring Kreng (w/Gareth Davis and Eric Thielemans), James Welburn, Simon Scott and Svarte Greiner. MIXES – Ambientblog

Although it was created in March, this mix shows little signs of "Spring". There was no intentional relation, but inevitably the devastating Japan Earthquake, and the frightening nuclear disaster following it, somehow found its way into this mix. The result: a rather dark overall atmosphere, which seems to leave little room for hope. But at the same time, in Europe, winter retreats and daylight returns. Nature shows that it can destroy as well as recuperate. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Playlist: 00:00 Porzellan - Vopar Tar[Parvo] Art, 2009, parvo 00702:15 Max Richter - The Vel D'HivElle s'appelait Sarah, 2010, Editions Jade 05:12 Colin Potter & Michael Begg - CarnethyFragile Pitches, 2010, Omnempathy OMIC108:29 Victor Joaquim - Radio_OEssays on Radio: Can I Have 2 Minutes of Your Time, 2005, Crónica 02009:39 Janek Schaefer - Untitled49 Years from Gesang der Jünglinge (2005-1958), 2005, Sirr 002013:08 Mikko Tarmia - Amb_end_softAmnesia, The Dark Descent (Game Soundtrack), 2010, Frictional Games13:25 Mikko Tarmia - Amb_extra01Amnesia, The Dark Descent (Game Soundtrack), 2010, Frictional Games13:40 Jack Wall - Linking ChamberMyst IV, Revelation (Game Soundtrack), 2005, Ubisoft14:12 Mikko Tarmia - Event_hallwayAmnesia, The Dark Descent (Game Soundtrack), 2010, Frictional Games14:18 Alio Die & Mariolina Zitta - Lithos (Part II)La Sala Dei Cristalli, 2010, Hic Sunt Leones HSL05816:08 Peter Andersson - SarkophagusMusic for Film & Exhibition II, 2010, Old Europa Cafe, OECD13518:07 Deaf Center - Hunted TwiceOwl Splinters, 2011, Type 08022:13 Heitor Alvelos - Had a Scanner been born on the BopsphorusEssays on Radio: Can I Have 2 minutes of Your Time, 2005, Crónica 02022:48 Max Eastley - Aerophones 5Installation Recordings (1973 - 2008), 2010, Paradigm Discs, PD2623:14 The Green Kingdom - Velvet LandscapeHidden Landscapes, 2011, Audio Gourmet AGCD00326:10 The Fun Years - Re: We're Again Buried UnderBaby It's Cold Inside, 2008, Barge Recordings, BRG00528:17 Steve Peters - Hymne (pour un Fils des Étoiles)Erik Satie et les Nouveaux Jeunes, 2011, Arbouse ARBOU02830:58 Gareth Davis & Machinefabriek - Grower, part 1Grower, 2011, Sonic Pieces 01037:28 Sussan Deyhim - PulsePossessed, 2001, Venus Rising Records40:44 Carl Michael von Hausswolff - Life and Death of PbocLife and Death of Pboc, 1986, Radium 226.05 RAPH 013-4(also in the 'Enter the Void' Soundtrack, 2010)42:08 Michel Banabila - The FallAlice in Wonderland & Various Other Works, 2010, unreleased43:47 Eluvium - Ogives RedistributedErik Satie et les Nouveaux Jeunes, 2011, Arbouse ARBOU02846:05 Lexithimie - Flesh and StonesI Rather Die Terrified, 2010, Audio Gourmet AGN01847:28 Antonymes - A Fragile AcceptanceThe Licence to Interpret Dreams, 2011, Hidden Shoal Recordings50:55 Deaf Center - Fiction DawnOwl Splinters, 2011, Type 08052:21 Chris Watson - Runway O2EIncidental Amplifications, 2006, Room40, EDRM40553:03 Alva Noto - Interim (for Dieter Rams)For 2, 2010, Line Line_04454:00 Pleq - Good Night, Pjusk RemixGood Night EP, 2010, Basses Frequences BF2958:06 Porzellan - Nebuleuse IIThe Fourth Level of Comprehension, 2009, Hibernate HB031:00:00 End
