A mixtape drawing together contributions from friends around the world, including folks running independent record labels, record producers, poets, community radio producers, musicians and others. All these tracks were recorded directly, drawn from community radio producers and collected directly from the artists, or through direct communication with some independent record labels. All the works were pulled together with the intention of sharing a mix that can point in a tiny way to the depth of different artistic and activist voices from around the world who have Palestine in their hearts. This mix was originally broadcast on Radio AlHara on Sunday, Feb. 16, 7am-11am eastern time, 2-6pm Palestine time, live on radioalhara.net Thank you for listening. - Stefan Christoff 01. Underlying the political and religious differences that have provoked centuries of unrest in the Middle East and North Africa is the landscape—an austere region of desert and mountains, transected by great rivers: the Nile, the Tigris, the Euphrates. This environment, along with centuries of cultural exchange, accounts for a rough musical unity across countries and ethnicities. Thus the music of Turkey, Israel and Palestine has similarities with the Arabic and Berber music of North Africa, and the Persian traditions of Iran. Today, progressive artists working within these traditions have created a Virtual Middle East, a cultural blend that effectively ignores ethnic, religious and political differences, and brings us an image of what a peaceful future in the region might sound like. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, soulful sounds from the Virtual Middle East, on a program called DESERT SOUL. Music is by MICHEL BANABILA, DHAFER YOUSSEF, MARJAN VAHDAT, NIYAZ, ARCHETRIBE, and ANOUAR BRAHEM. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

23.04 CD Komorebi (fuga libera FUG805) Aino Peltomaa; Mikko Perkola; Harmen Fraanje: Jää   Peltomaa Fraanje Perkola 6'28” 23.11 CD The Expedition [Composers' Voice CV100) Klas Torstensson: Northern Lights solisten en Radio Filharmonisch Orkest olv Peter Eötvös Göran Eliasson [tenor] & Olle Persson [bariton] & Mats Persson [bariton] 5'50” 23.17 CD Ørnen 1897 (Antarctica Records AR 052) George de Decker: Ørnen 1897 Brisée V George de Decker & SP!TSBERGEN 12'38” 23.30 eigen opname VPRO Vrije Geluiden trad.: Deli Rezi Xilva (religious sufi chant) + Yuonaxi Belxarna Pankisi Ensemble 6'16” 23.38 CD DUOS (Editions Wandelweiser EWR 2304) Dante Boon: Alone Sasha Elina [stem]; Kirill Shirokov [piano] 7'52” 23.46 LP Sound Years (Tapu records 020TR) Michel Banabila: Close to the moon / Earth Visitor Michel Banabila 10'00”

A space of refuge and comfort where, while wrapped in bedlinens or a soft eiderdown quilt, our dreams and fantasies unfold. Under the clouds of the duvet, in the darkness, intimacies are exchanged between bodies, hands searching, flesh tenderly touched. A centrepiece of domesticity, the psychic landscape of the bed belongs to the private sphere. But, according to James Taylor-Foster, its role in contemporary society is far more expansive. On our phones and laptops, reading, texting, exchanging emails and taking meals propped up on pillows, this is where social lives are forged, corporate empires are built and great novels are written. Between the sheets, James speaks to the sensuous connotations of the bed, a piece of furniture which is far more than just a place of rest.Introduction and outro voiced by Johnny Vivash. Editing and sound design by Tobias Withers. Soundscape by The God in Hackney. Artwork by Karel Martens. Produced by the Extra Extra team. Many thanks to Michel Banabila for his music.

It doesn't take much: a quiet drone, soft skin drums, and hand claps in this case — but it opens up an immersive perceptual world that's encoded in the word "trance." Trance music has a surprisingly long provenance, stretching back from the electronic beats of today to the mists of prehistory. Whether fueled by psychoactive substances, ecstatic group experiences, or just applied boredom, the world of trance music has proven both durable and adaptable. There's acid trance, epic trance, euro-trance, tech and progressive trance, vocal trance, and dream trance — just to mention the electronic dance variations. From the traditional acoustic drumming of North Africa/ to the relentless pounding of 140 beats per minute on the electronic dance floor, repetition and the power of extended, slowly changing rhythms are the foundation. Add infinite feedback guitar and Ambient electronics, and you have a sonic vehicle for travel to exotic virtual spaces. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an ethno-tronic journey on psycho-active trance rhythms, on a program called TRANCE PLANET. If the name sounds familiar, it was used in the 1990s for a series of World Music compilations on the late Triloka Records label. Music is by TIM GERWING, FRORE & SHANE MORRIS, MICHEL BANABILA, ROBERT RICH, JON HASSELL, MA JA LE & VIR UNIS, and STILLPOINT. Today's guest deejay is Alex Haas. I've been a fan of Alex's music since the last century. It feels strange to write that, but it's true. I discovered Alex on his Cypher 7 album, Decoder that he recorded with Jeff Bova. Decoder came in all all-back CD jewel case. Very mysterious and very sexy. Decoder was released on Strata, Bill Laswell's sub-label of Subharmonic Records, and that was all I needed to know in my decision-making process to purchase the album. I was not disappointed. Decoder was as mysterious and sexy as its CD case. The music was minimal, sinuous, and entrancing. I've been listening to Alex's music over the decades. When his album, The Woods, recorded with Michel Banabila and Bill Laswell, popped up on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist, I immediately invited Alex to guest deejay on Soundwave. Alex's mix is exactly what I expected and delights with music from unexpected sources. You're in for a treat. Before I get out of here, I want to wish everyone happy holidays. I also encourage you to follow Genius and Soul on your favorite podcast app. Genius and Soul is a weekly show featuring jazz, Black classical music, and more, with mixes lovingly selected by our guest deejays. Our first guest deejay will be legendary composer, pianist, singer, and flautist Brian Jackson. Genius and Soul launches on January 1, 2022. The mystical, inward-facing order of Sufism goes back to the very beginning of the Islamic religion in the 8th century. It has parallels to the venerable traditions of Buddhist and Hindu mysticism, and aims for direct union with God by purifying the heart. The work of the Persian Sufi poet RUMI has achieved worldwide popularity for its beauty and insight, and a body of Sufi music evolved to accompany religious practices and meditation—most famously the "whirling dervishes" of the Mevlevi order in Turkey—creating a genre that's not only alive today, but producing new strains of spiritual music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we revisit the contemplative heart of Middle Eastern music, on a program called 'SUFI SOUL 3.' Music by ZIKR PROJECT, DHAFER YOUSSEF, ANOUAR BRAHEM, ELIYAHU SILLS, ALEX KHASKIN, MICHEL BANABILA with MEMET POLAT, ÜMLAUT, & SALAR ASID, DEREK & BRANDON FIECHTER, ABE HATHOT, and PAUL AVGERINOS & OMAR FARUK TEKBILEK. When I first heard Christine Ott's Comma, I felt that this piece should be the starting point of a new mix. In the end, it became the final piece of the same mix - somewhat a movie's intro and end credits.I did not start this mix with a specific theme in mind. Its title only occurred to me after it was completed because it reflected its mood: a somewhat melancholy journey that fits the end of this remarkable year. The traditions of sacred music and contemplative song are found in almost every culture on earth. They bring beauty, peace, and emotional fulfillment to millions. Since the mid 20th century, the sacred sounds of exotic world cultures have become increasingly popular with western listeners, even though they sound nothing like western sacred music. Despite our increasingly secular culture, sacred song maintains a special place in our holiday celebrations, and contemplative music provides a much-needed balm for battered spirits. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, deep song, devotional chant, sacred hymns, and contemplative instrumentals from Spain, the Middle East and India, on a program called SACRED SONGS 2. Music is by ADAM HURST, YUVAL RON & flamenco singer ESTRELLA MORENTE, MICHEL BANABILA, AZAM ALI & LOGA RAMIN TORKIAN, DEVA PREMAL, and SERENA GABRIEL & STEVE ROACH.

Ever since I heard Banabila play a live set for VPRO's radio program Spleen (way back in 1983, mind you!), I have been addicted to his music. This particular track has remained one of my favourite over the years...although the sound quality slowly deteriorated because I had to copy it a few times from cassette to cassette to preserve it...(that's the reason it is not included in this mix). Looking back to the musical output of almost 30 years, Banabila's music is hard to categorize. He has released ambient music, as well as world fusion and sample jazz music ("Voiznoiz 3 - Urban Jazz  Scapes ", recorded with dutch jazz trumpeteer Eric Vloeimans was awarded an Edison in 2003).
His tracks has been used in many theatre productions and television documentaries!

Banabila's music is very experimental at times, yet it conveys emotions one can easily relate to - and it is exactly that which makes him a unique musician...as well as one difficult to market because he cannot be 'pinpointed' to any contemporary style. When I started on this mix, at first I wanted to focus on the ambient music Banabila has created. But in fact that would not do him right, it would represent only a small part of all the music he created. This mix is not a 'Best of Banabila', neither is it a collection of personal favourites  (in that case it would be a lot longer!). Looking back on this mix, I see a painful amount of tracks-that-should also-have-been-included....
But it covers a lot of different aspects of Michel Banabila's musical world.
