Jamison's remarkable transformation challenges the conventional wisdom surrounding autism, a disability impacting 1 in 36 Americans. Many scientists still consider non-speakers with autism—a full 40 percent of those on the autism spectrum—to be “mentally retarded.” Is it possible that the experts are wrong about several million people?  Don't miss this fascinating interview and be sure to pick up a copy of J.B. and Jamison's new book “Underestimated: An Autism Miracle.” The post The Truth About Autism – Episode 78: JB Handley appeared first on Ann Louise Gittleman.

As beings, our primary purpose is to give and receive love, and few embody that as well as the non-speaking autistic community. However, for far too long, the community has been entirely misunderstood. Non-speakers are often dismissed because they don’t communicate in a way many of us understand, but that doesn’t make them incapable of interacting. It just means the speaking community needs to get better at understanding.  What can speakers do to assist more non-speakers to share their voices? What tools of communication already exist, and how can we learn more about them? In this episode, the author of Underestimated: An Autism Miracle, JB Handley, and his son Jamie Handley share how the Spelling to Communicate process changed their family forever.    Three Takeaways  Non-speakers, defined While non-speakers can say some words, their spoken vocabularies are incredibly limited. This has nothing to do with cognitive function and everything to do with motor disability. How to respond to a non-speaker Non-speakers might not communicate in the way that’s deemed “normal”, but they’re keen observers and often cognitively brilliant. They don’t need to be spoken down to, and chances are their understanding far surpasses that of most people. Advice for parents of non-speakers Spelling to Communicate, a system designed to help non-speakers, can be taught at any age. Any parent with a non-speaking autistic child should look into this life-changing process.   Guest Bio-  JB Handley is the co-author of Underestimated: An Autism Miracle and the bestselling How to End the Autism Epidemic. As the father to an autistic son, JB is passionate about bringing awareness to the condition, and in addition to producing the documentary Autism Yesterday alongside his wife, he is also the co-founder of Generation Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to autism recovery.  Jamison Handley is an 18-year-old non-speaker. Diagnosed with autism at the age of 2, since going through the process of Spelling to Communicate last year, he is now able to fully communicate. A gifted mathematician, Jamison is set to graduate high school in 2022 and study neuroscience in college after that.  To find out more, go to:https://www.amazon.com/Underestimated-Autism-Miracle-Childrens-Defense-ebook/dp/B08SMR6CX9 https://www.facebook.com/GenerationRescue  https://jbhandleyblog.com/ https://twitter.com/GenRescue?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor  And to find out more about Spelling to Communicate, visit: https://i-asc.org/

Zack shares his passion for autism activism as a sibling to an autistic brother and how finding the proper nutritional habits have helped both of them. Zack is witty, endearing and filled with knowledge that surpasses most people. Get ready for some laughs, insight and tips on how to make your cocktails more healthy!   What we're talking about   Autism Awareness Life As An Introvert Self-Care   Autism   Zack is one of 6 kids with one brother who is autistic. Early on, Zack knew that he not only had the power but the skills to help his brother on the path to living and sustaining a healthy life. Zack has incorporated this nutritious lifestyle himself and is now the Executive Director of Jenny McCarthy's foundation, Generation Rescue.   Being A Personality As An Introvert   With two podcasts and being in the public eye, you might look at Zack as an extrovert, but he he's a self-professed introvert and truly enjoys his down time to recharge. Whether you're an introvert or extrovert, it's important to simply be you and not try to fit into a definition that just doesn't fit who you are.   Letting Go Of The Negative And Caring For Yourself   Self-care is so important and being constantly on the go, Zack is not only a proponent of self-care but practices what he preaches. Self-care isn't all about spa days, it's about so much more, including letting go of the negative comments that pop up on social media and adding things like collagen to your vodka martinis!   I am so excited for you to get to know Zack and can't wait for you to fall in love with this vibrant, refreshing and energetic human!   LINKS MENTIONED   Zack Peter Website #adulting Podcast #NoFilter with Zack Peter Zack's Instagram VistaDelMar   TIMESTAMPS 17:40 (13 sec ZP) – When we look at how things are supposed to be, what an introvert is supposed to mean, then we're limiting the lens. ZP When you're healthy and granola, that doesn't mean you're walking around in Birkenstocks and armpit hair. ZP I do collagen in my martinis. ZP When you're too comfortable,  you get bored. ZP People say you change as you get older, change as you grow, but I think you really just become more of yourself. ZP You can't let the glory or the negativity get you one way or the other. Tom and Polly Ellison were born and raised in South Jersey. They have been married fourteen years. Tom and Polly have a handsome eleven year old son named Tommy, and Polly has a beautiful daughter named Amanda. Tom and Polly met training in martial arts where Tom was an instructor. They currently reside in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Tom is a retired police officer and now works as a union carpenter. Polly is a homemaker, where she volunteers much of her time serving various benevolent organizations. Tom and Polly are also co-founders and managing partners of an international supplement company. They are strong Christians, who are very passionate about their faith in God. They truly believe their son Tommy is a miracle, and living proof of what the devil intended for harm, God is using for His good by helping the countless number of parents who are searching for answers and struggling to find hope for the many of children diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The Ellisons journey into autism started in 2006, when their son, Tommy, was diagnosed when he was two years of age. “Tommy became fixated on the wheels of toy cars, and would scoot around the perimeter of a room for hours on end. Shortly thereafter, he began losing words he had acquired, stopped making eye contact, and became unresponsive to his name. Tommy also showed no interest in socializing with other children. He regressed before our eyes. His pediatric neurologist bluntly informed us that there was no cure. We were told that Tommy might not speak, would have to be in a special education system, and might even need to be institutionalized.”, says the Ellisons. Believing that there was more to Tommy’s diagnosis, the Ellisons sought answers of their own: “We thought diet and nutrition might help improve Tommy’s symptoms, but we understood that we needed more help, so we began researching physicians who were treating autism with biomedical alternatives.” Their search led them to contact Dr. James Neubrander, who holds the position of medical director or scientific advisor with at least a half-dozen national and international centers and organizations dedicated to research and treatment of autism spectrum and related disorders. “Dr. Neubrander helped fully recover Tommy through safe and effective protocols. Within six weeks, we saw life start to come back into our son’s eyes, right in front of us. It sounds like something you’d only see in a movie, but our miracle is reality. Tommy is living testimony!”, stated the Ellisons. Today, Tommy is mainstreamed in a private Christian fifth grade classroom, and has maintained honor roll status since kindergarten. He plays the baritone for his school’s music program and was recently selected to the junior honor band. Tommy is a blue belt in karate and loves to compete in, wrestling, basketball, and soccer. He has been featured on CBS News and in a nationally syndicated documentary entitled Decoding Autism. The Ellisons stated, “Tommy is completely indistinguishable from his peers, thanks to Dr. Neubrander and his alternative mindset.” To that end, the Ellisons have become involved with Generation Rescue, a non-profit movement of scientists, parents and physicians dedicated to researching causes and treatments for autism. As “Rescue Angels” for Generation Rescue, the Ellisons have become one of a group of parents who have recovered their own children or are currently treating them biomedically. To date, the Ellisons have mentored some forty plus families going through the autism recovery process. http://www.drneubrander.com Dr. Neubrander 732-726-1222
