On this week's episode of Tying it Together, host Tim Boyum talks with Karen Brinson Bell, the recently removed executive director of the North Carolina Board of Elections. A new law passed last week enabled Republicans to select a new board, which then appointed a former Republican attorney general candidate and general counsel to the Republican house speaker, rather than her. Brinson discusses that decision, the board denying her the chance to give last remarks, leading state elections through a pandemic and natural disaster, the future of elections, and her own future.

Folks, what we're about to reveal will make you question everything you thought you knew about election integrity. As Milton's fury ravaged Florida and North Carolina, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, bureaucrats were quietly making moves that could change the outcome of the upcoming election. RAW FEED has uncovered exclusive details about last-minute voting rule changes that are sending shockwaves through political circles. Trust me, once you hear this, you'll never look at storm recovery the same way again. We've got insider information from the North Carolina Board of Elections that'll make your head spin. Imagine this: voters in 13 hurricane-affected counties now have more ways to obtain and deliver absentee ballots. Sounds innocent enough, right? Wrong. We'll show you why this seemingly helpful change could be a Trojan horse for potential fraud. But it gets worse. These voters can now drop off their ballots anywhere in the state. That's right, anywhere. We'll break down why this move has election integrity experts sounding the alarm. And wait until you hear about the teams being sent to storm relief centers to "help" register voters and collect ballots. It's a scheme so brazen, it'll make your blood boil. Gary Franchi doesn't just report the news – he gives you the tools to see through the smoke and mirrors. We'll expose how these changes could make it nearly impossible to accurately track voter turnout and contest discrepancies. Remember, North Carolina was one of the last states to report in 2020. Coincidence? We think not. We need your support now more than ever to keep bringing you this vital information. The mainstream media is too busy pushing their agenda to give you the truth about these election-altering changes. That's why we're asking for your help. Your donations keep us on the air and fighting for transparency. Without you, we're defenseless against the tidal wave of potential fraud. Don't let them use natural disasters as cover for election manipulation. Stand with us in this fight. Your support isn't just appreciated – it's crucial. Visit https://www.givesendgo.com/Keep-Next-... or donate via PayPal at https://www.paypal.com/donate?campaig.... Together, we can keep the flame of election integrity burning bright. But the story doesn't end there. We've got Republican leaders weighing in on these changes, and their concerns will shock you. RAW FEED is the only show brave enough to ask: Is this a genuine attempt to help storm victims, or a calculated move to tip the scales in a crucial battleground state? And it's not just North Carolina. We'll take you across the country, showing you how similar "emergency" changes could be coming to a polling place near you. From extended deadlines to out-of-county voting, we'll break down the hidden dangers lurking in these seemingly innocent adjustments. Gary Franchi and RAW FEED are on the front lines, bringing you the stories the mainstream media is too afraid to touch. We'll show you how patriots across the nation are fighting back against these last-minute changes, and how you can join the battle to protect the integrity of our elections. Don't miss a second of this explosive coverage. RAW FEED is your beacon of truth in a storm of electoral chaos. Tune in now and be part of the movement to save our democracy. Remember, in times like these, silence isn't just complacency – it's surrender to those who would use natural disasters to manipulate our most sacred right. The fight for fair elections is raging, and RAW FEED is giving you the inside scoop. From the shocking details of these rule changes to expert analysis on their potential impact, we've got it all. And trust me, you don't want to miss our in-depth look at how these hurricane-induced changes fit into the larger picture of election integrity threats across the nation. North Carolina Prepares to Implement Strict Voter ID Law, After Partisan State Supreme Court Reverses OpinionToday's Script(Variations occur with audio due to editing for time) Today's Links now below the scriptYou're listening to the American Democracy Minute, keeping YOUR government by and for the people. The showdown between the North Carolina legislature and North Carolina Supreme Court has ended, but now the implementation of strict voter ID laws in the state has begun. The highly restrictive law allows only an unexpired North Carolina driver's license, U. S passport, state voter ID card, or a local or state government-issued ID card. The state's supreme court struck the law down in 2022 as racially motivated, then a new, highly partisan conservative court reversed that decision. The North Carolina Board of Elections must now implement it before the 2023 municipal races. The Port City Daily reports that the board just completed a public input period during June. One recommended change is an “exception form,” allowing a voter to explain why they don't have the necessary ID, with options including theft or loss of an ID, no access to a birth certificate, no documents due to a disaster, among several accommodations.Other public concerns about the law included defining rules for handling & storage of personal information, deadlines for mail-in ballots around holiday dates, religious exceptions to being photographed, and the curing of ID problems with absentee ballots. The Board endorsed some recommendations on June 26th.The state is offering free non-driver state identification cards through the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. The UNC system’s universities have less than four months to improve. WRAL Education Insider explains what they’re doing to get better and how reading education has evolved over the years.

On this episode of RAS Reports, the Co-Directors of the Reinventing America's Schools Project, Curtis Valentine and Tressa Pankovits, sit down to discuss Tressa's recent op-ed in The Hill concerning Peltier et al. v. Charter Day School, the North Carolina court case about charter schools and school uniforms. This case involves a public charter school in North Carolina that does not allow girls to wear pants or shorts, only skirts and jumper-type dresses. When asked, the school refused to change their policy and said that boys and girls should be required to dress differently to emphasize chivalry and the dress code is part of a code of conduct where women are "regarded as fragile vessels that men are supposed to take care of". Parents decried the policy as gender discrimination and sued under the equal protection clause, Title IX and the charter school's own contractual agreement with the state of North Carolina Board of Education. Tressa argues that this case could act as a "gateway drug" to allowing other publicly funded education to discriminate on the basis of race or gender or disability. Read Tressa's opinion piece here. Get a sneak peek at another session from the upcoming Annual Educational Conference. Charla Burill with North Carolina Board of Dietitians and Nutrition and Pepin Tuma with Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics address the impact of constitutional free speech challenges to licensure of speaking professions. A lot of lawsuits recently in the US are drawing on the legal argument that states violate the free speech rights of unlicensed individuals by requiring that they meet minimum qualifications and obtain a license in order to practice this so called “speaking profession.” Charla and Pepin talk about why dietetic boards are being sued using this argument, discuss the definition and importance of the professional speech doctrine, and share updates on some recent cases and whether cases actually address licensure laws of a profession. They also discuss whether other professions should be concerned about what's going on - focusing on the concepts of conduct versus speech, professional-client relationship, and strict scrutiny standards for licensure laws. What do you think the most valuable characteristic is to have in practice right now? My answer might surprise you. I think it's being really amazing at coping with change! Practice and life as we know it, is changing so rapidly right now that at times it's hard to keep up. What used to work yesterday, doesn't today. If you don't like change or if you're stubborn in your ways and like to do things the way they always used be done then I'm guessing that life is probably quite tricky for you at the moment. The turf war of drone operator versus surveyor has been thrust into the light in the form of new legal battles. The North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors are seeking to prosecute any drone pilot that engages in “mapping, surveying and photogrammetry, stating accuracy, providing location and dimension data and producing orthomosaic maps, quantities, and topographic information.” As a result, many drone pilots in the state have abandoned drone mapping altogether.
In a 7-5 vote, the North Carolina Board of Education approved new standards for K-12 Social Studies and History that help entrench Critical Race Theory into the curriculum. Republican opponents say they wanted more of a balance between criticism of America and approval, but media and Democrats argued that the opposition was trying to hide The Truth from students. Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr continue to be concerned by what Louis calls the “backwards, fruitless, and shortsightedness" of the Biden White House and all the damage he is doing with his flood of Executive Orders. In this segment of American Ground Radio, they analyze the huge expansion Biden’s Administration continues to make in the realm of immigration.Rep. Maxine Waters lives by an incredible double standard, believing she is always “justified”, but the Republican never are…..not even when she is attacking Republicans for doing (in her mind) what she previously demanded her liberal followers to! Facts and Truth are irrelevant! Our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, look at the “self-talk” sayings parents and grandparents used to say to children to teach values and self-reliance in the past. It helped children to grow up being able to evaluate and to cope with what happens in their lives. It did not create children who would become young adults unable to handle even “hurtful” words and needing safe spaces for “protection”.The Biden Administration, along with those who are aggressively support them, are “gaslighting” the American people about why letting transgenders “identifying as females” play in Women’s Sport. The ACLU has joined the gaslighting on this subject with a series of tweets, all of which are absolutely not true. Stephen Parr explains. In adopting new Social Studies curriculum standards for North Carolina schools, the North Carolina Board of Education decided to include more about racism, discrimination, and gender identity, as BLM was pushing for; however, the word “systemic” was removed from the wording of the curriculum standard. Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, a black himself, was not in favor of the original proposal which included the word “systemic”. Further, he has recently been quoted saying “The system of government that we have in this nation is not systematically racist.” His website said including that word in the changes would be "political in nature, undermine our unity, and indoctrinate our students against our great country."

WRAL's political cartoonish (yes, a TV station has a political cartoonist) calls Republican members of the North Carolina Board of Education members of the KKK for opposing the use of Critical Race Theory to create new standards for K-12 Social Studies and History. One of those members is the first Black Lt. Gov. ever elected in NC. Another is a Native American. A third runs a ministry that was awarded the MLK Dream in Action Award. This kind of racist smear is dangerous and corrosive to our society, and it should be denounced as such by everyone associated with WRAL -- under the standard advanced by WRAL when it covers Republican scandals and gaffes. Senator Howard Lee's political career began auspiciously, in 1969 as the first African American mayor of a southern majority-white city, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He never planned to be mayor, running for all intents and purposes as a form of protest against a housing ordinance. Apparently he was quite persuasive, as he not only was elected, but went on to become a state senator, the first African American to head a state cabinet department, a member of the utilities commission, and the first African American chairman of the North Carolina Board of Education. Senator Lee is an army veteran, having served in Korea, and has some incredible stories to share from his 86 years on earth so far.
The North Carolina Board of Education met this week to discuss approval of new standards for Social Studies 7 History in Grades K-12. Republicans objected to the "tone" of the standards that case America as oppressive, without highlighting progress and exceptionalism. Democrats denied there was any such tone, and argued that systemic racism exists and needs to be part of instruction. But in a sign of how entrenched the concept is in education, nobody even mentioned the underlying issue -- which is Critical Race Theory. By Mickey Hutchings In campus news, The Appalachian reports that App State campus dining closures have led to almost 60 student employee layoffs. McAlister's Deli in the student union, Central Dining Hall and the Wired Scholar in the library have been closed since October 6th. Part-time student employees were laid off, but full-time campus dining employees have been reassigned to other roles according to Chancellor Sheri Everts. Students who were laid off prior to the closures told The Appalachian that their terminations were due to lack of funds. Despite the closures, the new food trucks on Sanford Mall, that have been brought to campus to make dining safer during the pandemic, are still open. Locally, vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris' husband made a campaign stop in Boone Monday. Douglas Emhoff encouraged the attendees of the campaign event at Booneshine Brewery to vote early. Emhoff almost remarked that president Trump's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US is the, quote, “most epic failure in the history of our country.” He said that if Democrats Joe Biden and Harris are elected, stricter COVID-19 measures will be put in place. According to polls from FiveThirtyEight, Biden is leading Trump in the polls by 2.5 points in North Carolina. To learn more about voting this year, visit the North Carolina Board of Elections website at NCSBE.gov.
Most pharmacists have read the Ellen Gabler article in the New York Times that directly called out the issues we have seen at major chains like CVS in January of 2020. Well, I brought that pharmacist on the podcast to discuss this, and other issues. Guess what? He's running for a Board of Pharmacy seat in North Carolina! Wesley Hickman was a pleasure to interview and hear how him sharing his story was a bomb going off inside of our profession and that of healthcare. Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: House Democrats are doing their level best to push a vote on a new 2.2 trillion dollar coronavirus stimulus bill, but are getting lowballed by the GOP and Trump administration, which claimed it had offered Democrats a $1.8 trillion bill that they then turned down. Meanwhile, mail-in and early voting is off to a rocky start, thanks to GOP efforts to continue sabotaging it in Texas and beyond. There are some bright points, but this is going to be a rough ride. And lastly, Amy Coney Barrett’s record on abortion may be even worse than we feared, as a new report shows she participated in a 2006 campaign that stated that Roe V Wade had to be overturned immediately. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Stimulus Bill Still Stalled Once again, we have a partisan battle over aid to the American people still suffering from a world-altering pandemic. You’ve heard this one before, but here’s where we’re at now. Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats are mobilized to vote on a $2.2 trillion dollar stimulus bill, which is pretty much the least they could be doing. Such a bill stands no chance of making it through the Senate without getting chopped up, of course, but at least it’s something. Republicans, however, don’t want anywhere near that number to go through, and are proposing tiny crumbs as opposed to the Democrats scraps. Remember, the HEROES act in May was $3.4 trillion and even that wasn’t nearly enough. The president, however, ever a wildcard, offered Democrats a $1.8 trillion bill. The Washington Post reports that number was too big for some of the more fiscally insane Republicans in Congress, but what’re they gonna do, cross the president? And of course, it’s still a cool 400 billion lower than what the Democrats want. Trump’s proposed bill, according to the Post, includes $300 billion for a new round of direct stimulus checks and another $300 billion for expanded unemployment at $400 per week. Still less than the $600 keeping people afloat, but better than nothing. That bill also includes allowances for COVID testing, rental protections, and more. But in almost every category, it’s still undercutting what the Democrats want, which is something along the lines of new 1200 checks, 600 a week unemployment, and more than the paltry 250 billion for state-level relief that the GOP is offering. And while they haggle all this out, more and more Americans are getting pushed over their personal financial cliffs. Texas Gov Locks Down Ballot Boxes There’s good news and bad news about the beginning of early mail in voting. Let’s start with the good. According to NBC news, the North Carolina Board of Elections says 300,000 people have voted by mail already, shattering records for the state. Many states are overcoming some early blips to get off to a roaring start with early voting and mail-in ballots. However. There is bad news, and you probably know what’s coming. Republicans are doing everything they can to limit voting access, and the latest example is particularly egregious. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbot issued a proclamation, as of today, closing ballot-drop off stations across the state and limiting them to one per county. That means in Texas, one of the biggest states in the country, each county will have only one ballot drop-off point. For reference, before the proclamation, some counties had as many as a dozen. Abbot claims this is for quote “security” purposes, but the only thing it’s securing is Trump’s fading chances of winning the election. Texas is rapidly becoming a contestable state for Democrats, and Abbot knows it, as does the local Democratic party. Gilberto Hinojosa, the chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, said quote: “Republicans are on the verge of losing, so Governor Abbott is trying to adjust the rules last minute. Governor Abbott and Texas Republicans are scared. We are creating a movement that will beat them at the ballot box on Nov. 3, and there’s nothing these cheaters can do about it.” ACB's Abortion Views Exposed Amy Coney Barrett is clearly virulently anti abortion like several Supreme Court Justices, but until now, most of them have had the acumen to couch those opinions in conservative legalese. Barret, however, may be the first one to just say screw it and go all out. That’s because a new report by NBC news shows that in 2006, Barrett participated in a two-page ad in the South Bend Times calling for Roe v. Wade to be overturned and ending the “barbaric legacy” of the decision. Doesn’t get more clear-cut than that! And this comes in the wake of Trump, at the debate with Biden, claiming quote “you don’t know her view on Roe v. Wade.” endquote. Well, looks like we do now. What’s more, Barrett did not disclose this fact to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is currently doing its background digging on her before her confirmation hearings. The worst thing is that she’ll probably get away with it entirely -- all of the dirt in the world can’t stop the GOP if they have the votes. Right now, it looks like Barrett’s unsavory optics have put off Mitch McConnell from calling for a vote before the election. But if Trump loses, you better believe the gloves are going to come off and they’ll make a lame duck push to get her on the court. After all, Kavanaugh had multiple women accusing him of violent sexual assault and he’s currently sitting right on that bench. But when or if ACB gets there, it’s good to know what she is right off the bat. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: After the absolute mess of a debate on Tuesday, the Trump campaign is crying foul, accusing the Commission on Presidential Debates of bias and insisting that no rule changes be made to stop the President shouting over his opponent whenever he wants. In other words, more pain and suffering await any brave fools who decide to tune in to the next one. Sound the klaxon: we’ve got an update on the dumbest men alive. The Michigan Attorney General charged right wing scammers Jacob Wohl and Jack Burman with four felony counts, including voter intimidation, stemming from their idiotic scam to set up a robocall to discourage urban voters from casting a ballot in the general election. Several GOP Senators, Including Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Joni Ernst flipped sides and voted with Democrats in a procedural vote on the Trump-backed lawsuit against the affordable Care Act. What this means for the upcoming Supreme Court hearings that could decide the fate of the ACA lawsuit after election day, we’ll see. Donald Trump tried one more mundane little attempt at voter manipulation: including a signed letter in food assistance boxes given out to needy families. Food banks, thankfully, are taking the letters out, as they clearly violate the Hatch Act and are just in incredibly poor taste regardless. That’s it for the Majority Report’s AM Quickie Today! One said he was misled by staff attorneys about what the deal would do. The North Carolina Board of Elections had a chance to improve security of the systems we use for voting. They blew it… says Lynn Bernstein. Lynn was on the show a few episodes ago, when we hoped the Board would approve a specific set of criterion for voting machines (hand-marked paper ballot, risk limiting audit, and no modem or internet connection). But they ended also approving the machine that prints out a bar code, and it turns out that many of the machines we thought were safe had a modem inside that county officials say they don’t use… or do they? This particular area of election security wasn’t getting much attention. The important issues of Gerrymandering and Voter ID were sucking up all the oxygen. But last night (Sunday, November 3 as we produce this show), it turns out that John Oliver covered much of the same material, with a lot more jokes, on his HBO program Last Week Tonight. Lance welcomes the listener to the Red X Podcast. This episode features Private Investigator, Michael Longmire from the North Carolina Board of Massage and Body Therapy. Nicole also reports on a recent sting in Knightdale. Lance Olive shares a recent date night with wife Cheryl in which they watched the movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter And Nicole tells the story of wiping out in a roller skating race at a local rink. As an icebreaker, Lance asks questions about New Year’s Eve trivia. Did you know that in Spain, it’s tradition to stuff a grape into your mouth for every bong of the clock at midnight? It's called The Twelve Grapes of Luck. In Mexico, the color of your underwear reflects your hopes for the new year and in Denmark, neighbors throw pots and pans at neighbors’ doors as a symbol of well-wishing. Nicole reports on a recent sting operation to shut down an illegal massage business operating in a small North Carolina town that was a front for a brothel. The business was being run by a woman. An employee from a neighboring business in the same strip mall had provided the original tip to police that resulted in their shut down. On this episode, Nicole interviews Private Investigator, Michael Longmire who was hired by the NC Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy. Michael clarifies that the term “massage parlors” has a connotation with adult establishments and that unlicensed massage establishments are referred to “illegal massage businesses”. The legal massage industry seeks to close illegal massage businesses, many of them operating as brothels, and hired Michael two years ago to investigate these illegal establishments. Michael estimates that there may be as many as 500 illegal massage businesses in the state and that there are 9,000 across the country. He says that these businesses are “almost like slavery”. Victims working for sexual services have no other choice. They are often undocumented from either China or Korea, live in the establishment and are required to work long hours without adequate pay. Michael also says that the reason they are here is because there is a demand. Many of the victims get lured or forced into the industry with the hope of sending money back to their families in their native countries. The Board wants to encourage communities to pressure these businesses to close and to offer victims services. The illegal massage businesses are typically easily identified: advertisements promote the person providing the service rather than the service and include language such as “provides a happy ending.” Many of the ads are posted on backpage.com. The establishments might also restrict clientele to men and prohibit services to those of certain races or under a certain age. They are open 7 days a week, 12-14 hours a day and are often located in a strip mall or even in larger malls. Clients may be seen parking far away from the business and “sneaking” into the front door. Legitimate massage and bodywork businesses require licenses and continuing education. North Carolina is working on a database that interested customers can reference to see if a business is operating legally. There are documented cases of coercion being involved with keeping the victims in the business. Michael says that Polaris recently received a tip that there was someone being physically forced into a business after being pulled from a car. In another case, a woman who had escaped a business and left the state later reentered NC and began working in another business. The original business owner, discovered the woman at the second business and assaulted her. In addition to coercion tactics, victims are often kept in place because of debt bondage they have incurred to the business owner. Typical rescue efforts don’t include places for the victims to stay that include culturally sensitive care. For example, there is nowhere for victims to receive counseling in their native language. Furthermore, victims need special legal assistance to handle their potential illegal immigration status. If you suspect an illegal massage business, contact your state’s Board of Massage and Bodyworks Therapy or local law enforcement. More law enforcement will need additional training to human trafficking training to appropriately respond to the specific needs of massage victims. Michael also says that there is a need for Chinese Americans to come alongside efforts so that there will be more culturally sensitive responses as well as to put pressure on the Chinese American business owners to shut down. If you are in North Carolina and wish to report a potential illegal massage business, call 919-546-0050. Or, you can go to www.bmbt.org and file a complaint. You can also contact Michael Longmire through the website if you’d like to learn more about the issue or have him speak to your group.
