An episode that tries to make it make sense. In Episode 124 of The Autistic Culture Podcast, “Justice for Victor,” we confront the tragic police killing of 17-year-old autistic Puerto Rican teen Victor Perez and the systemic failures that led to his death. Centering voices from the Black neurodivergent community, this powerful conversation demands a reimagining of autistic justice beyond white-centered narratives. This episode is a call to action for the autism and neurodiversity movements to prioritize true equity, accountability, and liberation for all. Here's what we cover in today's episode: * In this powerful and somber episode, Angela is joined by Black autistic advocates Faith Clarke and Darren Calhoun to discuss the heart breaking murder of Victor Perez, a non-speaking autistic Puerto Rican teenager.* On April 5th, Victor Perez—a 17-year-old autistic, disabled Puerto Rican teen—was shot by police in his own front yard. He is no longer with us. And now, his family is left to grieve in a system that failed him at every level.* Darren Calhoun is a justice advocate, worship leader, and photographer based in Chicago. He's the co-host of the Second Sunday podcast, and his work bridges communities across race, gender, and neurodivergence. Darren is a powerful voice for intersectionality and faith-based inclusion, and he's someone who speaks truth with clarity and compassion.* Faith Clarke wrote her best selling book Parenting Like a Ninja with Angela and it was based in part on her experience as a business owner and mom of a non-speaking autistic son (and a couple of other neurodivergent humans too).* We are especially grateful to Tiffany Hammond who you might remember from our Monster's High episode a couple of weeks ago — whose writing on her fidgets and fries Instagram in response to Victor's death called me into deeper reflection. Her words were a turning point for us.* Victor's Go Fund Me: https://www.gofundme.com/f/justice-for-victor-perez“quotes”Victor is not the first. He joins a growing list of young, Black and Brown neurodivergent lives—Stephon Watts. Elijah McClain. Ryan Gainer.Their stories demand justice. This episode is about what happened. What should have happened. And what needs to happen next—if we truly want a movement that's rooted in liberation for all of us. We do “adult” differently. We are That Black Couple. Our goal is to create a space for Black millennials to discuss and embody adult life on their own terms. We aren't beholden to “traditional” gender or parenting roles, queerness is fluid and present in the ways we show up in our relationships and in the world, and we want to build community with other 30-something Black folx who are trying to figure this ish out.

In Season 2, Episode 5 of the NYMA podcast, we address the intersectionality of race and disability in America through the eyes of personal accounts. I interviewed my own brother, Wale, about his police stop when he was a teenage boy driving around our little brother, Kunle, also a teenager at the the time. For those of you who have already been following us on social media and via this podcast, you are aware that Kunle is autistic with an intellectual disability. He is also non-verbal. One of his favorite pastimes, up until this current day, is to be driven around. It typically calms him and has been used countless times to ease his mind by not only Wale, but my parents, various aunts, uncles, cousins, family friends and me.It would be one day when two teenage black boys, one neurotypical and one with special needs, chose to drive around their own neighborhood. It would be Wale's first traffic stop that would give him pause, make him feel uncomfortable and wonder about his future... it would not be his last as he grew up and eventually became a black man. It would be what happened after his first traffic stop that taught us all valuable life lessons that we would take with us for decades. Emotional bruises were formed and this story wouldn't be revealed to my parents until much, much later in life. Perhaps it was simply because we didn't want to add on to their stress, but we chose to internalize, until we couldn't anymore. For more information that addresses issues related to the intersectionality of race , neurodiversity and/or disability, check out The Color of Autism Foundation. Before talking with Ryan in this episode, I had no idea the scope of the Eagles Autism Foundation. Founded just three short years ago in 2017, today the foundation has woven a commitment to the autism community throughout everything they do. From the end zone to employment to community grants, I hope you’ll be as impressed as I was about the possibilities that are available.

Sometimes the best inspiration for leadership style comes from the most natural place: our own lived experience. We can look at early, defining experiences that have shaped our styles, or we can look at our ongoing self-story for clues of how we arrive at the kind of leader we've become. In this episode, we meet Kimberly Radaker Bays, CEO, proud Mom, and Principal of the Exponential Property Group, a multi-million-dollar integrated owner and operator of multi-family properties. One of several interesting aspects of Kim's style is both refreshing and highly effective ... she calls it 'The Mom Talk!'My Favorite Quotes from Kim Radaker Bays in this episode, (paraphrased):“Sometimes I use what I call The Mom Talk!”“You really have to maintain that human element in team interactions!”“It's so important to be able to let go ... and truly delegate!”The best ways to connect with Kim Radaker Bays online are:Website: https://exponentialpropertygroup.com/Children of Autism Foundation: https://marthasranch.org/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimberly-radaker-bays-b46696b/Email: kim@exppg.comAbout the PROFITABLE HAPPINESS™ Podcast:The Profitable Happiness™ Podcast features stories from highly successful CEOs, Business Leaders, and Experts who exemplify the use of Inspirational Leadership, Employee Happiness, and Harmonious Teams to build business profitability. https://drpele.comSupport the show (https://drpele.com)
Episode 38: The color of autism Please join in on the conversation with Camille Proctor and her discussion on the experience of being a caregiver to her black autistic son. She is also the founder and executive director of The Color of Autism Foundation. The the foundation, she supports autistic families in the African American community. Black children are far more likely to be misdiagnosed or not dianognsed with autism until much later in life. This makes it very difficult for black families to get the support they need. Please consider donating to thecolorofautism.org and support her work locally and globally.

EPISODE 6: Despite the challenges associated with autism, there are so many individuals on the spectrum that are inspiring us all and proving that challenges can indeed be overcome. One such individual is Armani Williams. He was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of two-years-old and was considered nonverbal. He is now the first openly diagnosed autistic NASCAR driver. To date, Armani has 18 wins and two championships. Autism is a disorder that is characteristically marked by difficulty focusing on and processing different stimuli and tasks simultaneously, in addition to complications with communication. These are two key skills for any race car driver. Initially, it seemed that Armani’s dream of becoming a professional NASCAR driver was impossible. When he was eight-years-old, Armani began competing in go-kart racing, then bandolero styles vehicles, and quickly progressed to professional series. He raced in the ARCA Truck Pro Series in 2016, signing with SPEAR MotorSports. He broke records by becoming the highest finishing African American in a series race and the highest finishing African American in the series championship. The same year, Armani was invited to compete in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine and returned to the competition for a second year in a row. 2017 saw Armani move up to a higher level of competition to hone his skills as a race car driver and gain confidence in the former NASCAR Canadian Tires Series now the NASCAR Pinty’s Series of Canada. He was coached by the team general manager and driver Joey McColm, along with NASCAR Monster Energy Cup driver D.J. Kennington. His personal diagnosis with autism and success on the track inspires his philanthropy off the track. In 2015, Armani and his family established the Armani Williams Race 4 Autism Foundation to raise awareness and promote research. He continues to speak to audiences and make appearances to local communities during race week to drive action and hope. Some may have viewed Armani’s dream of becoming a professional NASCAR driver impossible. But Armani didn’t accept impossible, and his great support system has made Armani’s future, both on and off the track, both remarkable and bright.
