Today, Casey Stumpf, a NAMS certified nurse practitioner and dietitian, shares her journey into the world of hormonal health, particularly focusing on menopause and hormone replacement therapy. She discusses the misconceptions surrounding hormone therapy, the importance of understanding hormonal changes in women, and the benefits of testosterone therapy. Casey emphasizes the need for specialized care in managing menopause symptoms and the significance of early intervention with hormone therapy. The conversation also touches on the interconnectedness of diet, exercise, and hormonal balance, providing listeners with actionable insights to improve their health and well-being. As both a registered dietitian and a nurse practitioner, Casey offers a unique, integrative approach to healthcare that combines her expertise in nutrition with advanced clinical knowledge, allowing her to provide personalized care that addresses both the body and mind. Over the past 20 years, she's had the privilege of working in diverse healthcare settings, from the Emergency Department and Family Practice to End-of-Life Care. Her time as an end-of-life provider was especially formative, as it highlighted the critical importance of being proactive in our health and wellness long before we face serious illness or decline. It became clear to her how essential it is to prevent a "bad death" by investing in our health now—making the right choices, optimizing our well-being, and extending our healthspan, rather than merely focusing on lifespan. Her background as a dietitian has also given her a deep understanding of the powerful role nutrition plays in long-term health. She is passionate about helping her patients achieve sustainable weight loss, focusing on life-sustaining, nutrient-dense approaches rather than quick fixes or restrictive diets. This emphasis on balanced, mindful eating not only supports healthy weight management but also promotes overall vitality and helps to balance hormones, especially during life stages like menopause. Driven by her desire to help women live their best lives at every stage, she has pursued advanced education in menopause care, earning her Menopause Society Certification. This allows her to offer targeted care that integrates bioidentical hormone therapy with nutrition and lifestyle changes to help women navigate hormonal shifts, reclaim their energy, and feel their best. Ultimately, her goal is to bring her patients' spark back—to optimize their health, support their weight goals in a sustainable way, and empower them to live a vibrant, fulfilling life. She believes that true wellness is about being proactive today to prevent illness tomorrow, and she is dedicated to guiding her patients on this path every step of the way. Jeanne Lenzer is an award-winning independent medical investigative journalist and author whose hard-hitting investigations and analyses have appeared in medical journals, such as The BMJ and the Journal of Family Practice, and in outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Smithsonian Magazine, the Atlantic, Washington Monthly, Newsweek Japan, Mother Jones, and Discover. Her first book, The Danger Within Us: America's Untested, Unregulated Medical Device Industry and One Man's Battle to Survive It, explores themes that have been at the heart of Lenzer's work over the past three decades: the intersection of money and medicine and how profiteering distorts medical science and undermines the public health, often by gaming or misrepresenting research to obtain a desired outcome. The book served as a basis for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists' award-winning Implant Files project on medical devices and for the Netflix show, Bleeding Edge . It was used by John Oliver for his segment on medical devices as well as by the television show, The Resident for segments on the vagus nerve stimulator. It was favorably reviewed by Jerome Groopman in The New Yorker.  Her investigations have revealed hidden financial ties between industry and public institutions, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. In each instance, she documented flawed scientific recommendations that serve to protect profits over public health. Examples include the CDC's recommendation for oseltamivir (Roche, Tamiflu), a campaign that was paid for by Roche; and the FDA's approval of drugs over the (sometimes unanimous) recommendations of their own scientists - after being contacted by politicians beholden to manufacturers. http://www.jeannelenzer.com/

Dr. Ben Edwards always dreamed of being a small-town country doctor like his granddads. After graduating from UT-Houston Medical School in 2002 and completing a residency in Family Practice, he spent 7 years as the only doctor in the county at the Garza County Health Clinic in Post, TX. A divine appointment in 2011 opened his eyes to the fact that U.S. medical schools only teach a very narrow way of disease and symptom management with pharmaceuticals instead of disease and symptom resolution by addressing root causes. Veritas Medical was established in 2012 to try and truly help people by addressing root causes. Dr. Drummond shares his fascinating journey from physician to burnout coach, highlighting his experiences in addressing physician burnout and the sustainability of medical practices. He discusses the impact of his work, emphasizing strategies to manage burnout and cultivate a balanced career. Join us as we explore the vital importance of understanding and pursuing an ideal job description in the medical profession and the profound impact it can have on physician well-being. Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: 1️⃣ Burnout is not a problem to solve, but a challenge to manage. Dr. Drummond emphasizes the need for a strategy, not a definitive solution, in preventing and recovering from burnout. 2️⃣ Identifying your ideal job description and aligning it with your current role is crucial. I know it's a struggle. It can take a couple of interviews to try to find the right provider. Now, if you don't have a good relationship with your provider, shop around. We are fortunate to be in that kind of time that we're able to do that. But it's really important for you to have somebody that knows your health when you are somewhat healthy. Because if you do have something happen and you go to the emergency room or the urgent care. They don't have your whole record, they don't know all the stuff that's going on with you. That's not where you get treated, especially with chronic health issues. My second thing is if you are a veteran and you have not signed up for your veterans benefits, please do that. You can file online, you could call the number, just Google like VA benefits or whatever. Fairly straight forward process, but it does take time. So go ahead and get that started today.

Guest host Tonya Miller interviews Kyle Jones, M.D., who talks about his most recent book, “When All Hope Seems Lost: A Gospel Perspective on Mental Illness in Youth,” which will be released later this month. Kyle is a Family Practice physician who works primarily with neurodivergent individuals and their families. He is active in the Church, and he and his wife are the parents of four children. Kyle shares his story of first being diagnosed with mental illness as a student, with significant worsening during his medical residency. This is the topic of his first book: “Fallible: A Memoir of a Young Physician's Struggle with Mental Illness.” He talks about noticing mood disorder symptoms when he was a teenager, but not realizing that he was dealing with mental illness at the time. The cumulative effects of the stress he experienced as a medical student and resident led him to eventually learn that he was living with anxiety and depression, for which he still takes medication and participates in therapy. Kyle describes ways that he started to share his story with other physicians and learned that he was not as alone as he feared. From there, he has continued to develop opportunities for providing outreach and education about mental illness, especially for members of the Church. He began to realize that there are not many resources about mental illness for youth in the Church, along with ongoing myths and stigma about the relation of mental illness to the gospel, which led him to write this book. Kyle describes the complexities that youth in the Church face, and ways that specific gospel principles can help them heal, even when, in some cases, there is no “cure” for what they are dealing with. He shares stories of teens who have worked though challenges with mental illness that he interviewed for his book. He also interviewed mental health professionals who work with teens and talks about some of the insights they provide. Kyle refers to what he calls the “Broken Record” messages of the gospel that can bolster youth who fear they have done something “wrong” to “cause” their mental illness. They are: 1) Jesus loves you, no matter what, 2) Mental illness is not your fault, and 3) There are people here to help. I am very grateful for Kyle's willingness to share his story and perspectives around ways that principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ can ground and empower youth if they are experiencing mental illness while simultaneously navigating the complexities of life. As a side note, I'm focusing only on sharing stories associated with the Queer-LDS experience now. However, if you would like to share your story about a different Church- or gospel-related topic on Listen, Learn and Love, please contact Tonya about the possibility of working with her as my guest-host (e-mail Tonya at tonya@cottonwood.care).
