Five years ago, in season two of this show, we invited Mother Jones senior editor Anna Merlan on to talk about the rise of dangerous health conspiracies in the U.S. and now that a famous anti-vaxxer, RFK Jr., has been confirmed as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, we've sat down again to discuss what... like, WHAT?You can find more from Anna Merlan here:X: @annamerlanBluesky: @annamerlan.bsky.social Hosted on Acast. Many of Donald J. Trump's cabinet picks have something in common: a very close relationship with Fox News. On this week's On the Media, hear about the revolving door from the conservative network to the White House. Plus, election conspiracy theories from Kamala Harris supporters go viral. And a satirical news site buys up Alex Jones' Infowars. [01:00] Host Brooke Gladstone speaks with Matt Gertz, senior fellow at Media Matters, about the re-opened revolving door between conservative media and the Trump administration. [11:52] Host Micah Loewinger sits down with Anna Merlan, senior reporter at Mother Jones, to discuss the flurry of apparent Democratic voters questioning election results on social media, and why, without backing from public officials, “BlueAnon” is likely a nonstarter.[20:05] Host Brooke Gladstone chats with Bill Adair, founder of PolitiFact and author of the new book Beyond the Big Lie, about the history of fact-checking and why the field – in desperate need of resources and reinforcements – is struggling to break through in our information ecosystem. [33:23] Host Micah Loewinger talks with Matt Pearce, former staff writer at the LA Times, and president of Media Guild of the West, about the media's audience problem.[43:00] Host Brooke Gladstone calls up Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion, because The Onion bought Alex Jones' Infowars. Many media outlets were prepared for conspiracy theories and lies to spread after the election. But many thought that it would be coming from Donald Trump or his supporters spreading the “Big Lie.” But since Donald Trump's win, some social media posts from Kamala Harris supporters and people on the left have gone viral questioning the outcome of the election. Host Micah Loewinger speaks with Anna Merlan, senior reporter at Mother Jones covering disinformation, technology, and extremism, about the viral post-election delusions and how conspiratorial thinking can be expected from any losing party. Just a few years ago, Elon Musk seemed to be just another Silicon Valley billionaire with no true political compass. He once described himself as “half-Republican, half-Democrat” and often donated money to candidates from both parties. But all that seemed to change during the Covid-19 pandemic when Musk started taking much more right-wing stances about lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and many other divisive political issues, often spreading misinformation in the process.Today, Musk has donated almost $120 million of his own money to get Donald Trump reelected. He recently campaigned with Trump at New York's Madison Square Garden, where he said he wasn't just MAGA, he was “dark, gothic MAGA.” Musk is using both his financial resources as the world's richest person along with the soft power he wields on X, the social media platform he bought two years ago, where he routinely posts to his 200 million followers why they should vote for Trump. In this Reveal podcast extra, host Al Letson talks about Musk's political evolution with Mother Jones senior reporter Anna Merlan, who's been covering the many ways Musk has tried to influence the 2024 election.“There have always been billionaires and titans of industry who get involved in politics,” Merlan says. “But I think the scale of Musk's involvement is really different because it's not just that he's a billionaire. It's not just that he's endorsing Trump. It's also that he controls a powerful and widespread communication medium.” Support Reveal's journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenow Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/newsletter Connect with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram Read: Elon Musk's Lawyers Quietly Subpoena Public Interest Groups (Mother Jones)Read: How Elon Musk is Tying His Love for Trump to His Fight in Brazil (Mother Jones)
Donate to our October 2024 OVERCOMING THE DARKNESS campaign at https://weirddarkness.com/overcoming. Weird Darkness is narrated by professional full-time voice actor Darren Marlar. No A.I. voices are ever used in the show.IN THIS EPISODE: The horror entertainment industry would make you think that Satan is everywhere, controlling world leaders, possessing church pastors, inhabiting the bodies of kids who play with Ouija boards, even somehow controlling your children's dolls or other toys… all in the name of the Lord Lucifer. Ironically, Satan is only mentioned a handful of times in the bible, despite what you've been led to believe by Hollywood. The image of Satan we typically envision is actually not from the bible at all, but from a poem. Most Satanists, despite the clever name, don't openly worship the devil. And while I do believe in Satan and the danger he poses – I believe we are giving him way too much credit for some things – especially some of the conspiracy theories people believe, or blaming him for when we do bad things, (i.e., “the devil made me do it!”). That being said, there are some areas that you have to wonder if perhaps he truly did place his crooked finger upon in order to insert his evil influence. What does Satan look like? What's the meaning of 666? Do people really kill in the name of Satan? Are some places or objects somehow under a Satanic influence? Today, Jordan sits down for a chat with Anna Merlan, author of Republic of Lies, covering a whole host of issues, including the Conspiracy Cruise, bigot nuances, and the guy from the Sound of Freedom.
Jim Caviezel is the moist-eyed actor who played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ — and has since continued to do so in his own headcanon. He's also a fan of QAnon, which is why we've covered him in the past: Episode 143, Enter the Cavortex, in which we found out how much of a nightmare he is on film sets, and Episode 238, Sound of Freedom, in which we explored his latest child trafficking summer blockbuster. The movie saw him play Tim Ballard, the head of tastelessly-named and questionably-run anti-child-trafficking non-profit Operation Underground Railroad ( OUR). But since the film was released — and promptly vaulted to the center of the culture wars — Ballard has stepped down from OUR, been accused of sexual misconduct, and was even denounced by the Mormon Church. We cover all of that in this episode with our guests: Vice journalists Anna Merlan and Tim Marchman, who've been covering Ballard and his organization for a while now. This summer, a movie called The Sound of Freedom took America by storm. The hero was Tim Ballard, the founder of an organization called Operation Underground Railroad. The movie depicted Ballard as an avenging hero who rescued trafficked children from a life of slavery. The truth, we're all finding out, is something more complicated and a lot less heroic.Ballard left the organization around the time Sound of Freedom premiered, following an investigation into his sexual misconduct. An independent film released in the UK this week has taken the US box office by storm, but has run into controversy. Sound of Freedom is the story of anti-child trafficking campaigner Tim Ballard, who founded charity Operation Underground Railroad (OUR). But the credibility of the claims made by Ballard and the organisation he once led have been called into question, and troubling links have been unearthed with conspiracy theories perpetuated by the US far-right. Vice News journalists Anna Merlan and Tim Marchman have been digging into the facts behind Ballard and OUR for a number of years, and explained to Ali and Paul what is going on. Elsewhere on the podcast, we explain why Ferret Fact Service fact-checked a video about Patrick Harvie, and Ali's credibility is tested in an impromptu quiz.Show notes:Anna and Tim's work on OUR and Tim Ballard can be found here. Our fact check on the Patrick Harvie video is here.
This one is the reason we haven't released for a couple weeks. Well, this one and the next one. What was meant to be a one part look at a few reasons why Ballard is a dodgy conman the rabbithole turned out too deep for one measly episode. Clocking in at over two hours it's one of our longer ones. Didn't even scratch the surface on this. The Sound of Freedom has been received by audiences that are not only squealing with joy - but also spreading the good word across the seas. For example, a woman in Peru commented how excited she was that The Sound of Freedom was being screened in the Blue Mountains of NSW. Nothing suss about that! So we look at the local release of the movie, an inevitable comparison with Taken and then the main meal is a good old bollocking on Ballard. He lies a lot. It's probably a pathological thing. To cover the full spectrum of what a terrible human being Tim Ballard is would take HOURS. This guy has more dirt on him than my dog and she's stinky. Part 2 will look at the harm - what will happen when bozos turn up with guns trying to find kids in random South American countries inspired by this movie? Idiots are about to make the lives of real trafficking organisations much, much harder. Rambos are about to get organised and start making a serious mess of things. Kids will not be saved. And Paul Hutchinson. Real Estate guy. Krav Maga guy. Narcissist. We will look at a member of OUR and producer of the film and see why the hell a real estate magnate is doing sting operations and why he thinks that being trained in Krav Maga is qualification to rescue children from sex trafficking. I really don't like him. As promised for those who want to dive deeper - here are the shownotes. --------------------------------------------------------------Anna Merlan and Tim Marchman's work can be found on Vice. Then Disney acquired SoF within the Fox catalogue. Fox bought the movie in 2018 and sold its catalogue to Disney in 2019 and then it was acquired by Angel Studios early 2023 who then crowdfunded its release.

Find all of podcasts I host at https://weirddarkness.com/links.IN THIS EPISODE: The horror entertainment industry would make you think that Satan is everywhere, controlling world leaders, possessing church pastors, inhabiting the bodies of kids who play with Ouija boards, even somehow controlling your children's dolls or other toys… all in the name of the Lord Lucifer. After years of delays, the film “Sound of Freedom'' has finally hit theaters. The movie stars majorly pilled QAnon-promoting actor Jim Caveizel. He portrays Tim Ballard, the founder of the anti sex trafficking organization Operation Underground Railroad. This film is bound to be a big boon for Tim Ballard. He is a former Department of Homeland security agent, but starting about a decade ago he made a name for himself thanks to stories of bold, daring missions helping rescue abducted children and arresting traffickers. Sex trafficking is in fact a very real and serious problem that is being actively fought by many governmental and nongovernmental organizations. But investigations into Ballard discovered that he exaggerates or sometimes outright fibs about his role in helping victims of trafficking. Similarly, Operation Underground Railroad claims partnerships with law enforcement and corporations that aren't actually real. To discuss the film, we are joined by Dave Anthony of the Dollop Podcast. To dive into Operation Underground Railroad and its founder Tim Ballard, we talk to Vice News reporters Anna Merlan and Tim Marchman. Do visiting inter-dimensional spirits and stowaway UFO passengers use the LAX Airport to touch down among us? Well they do if they're in town for the Conscious Life Expo, conveniently located at the LAX Airport Hilton for those who rely on otherwise mundane modes of travel. The Valentine's Day weekend crystals and angel cards fest of disjointed spirituality meets dodgy science just celebrated its 21st year as the premiere gathering point for awakened seekers choosing to come out of sovereign superposition and manifest in space-time reality. But, as visiting Vice News correspondent Anna Merlan tells us, it turns out the organizers have grappled for years with how to reconcile the tensions between obvious charlatans and those who really, truly can talk to the dead, psychics who can diagnose your dog's mystery ailments, and those making artificial claims about all-natural elixirs, prophets of light and love, and QAnon promoting anti-vax conspiritualists. This year's solution? Apologies for the late release! I would blame it on the holiday but that would be a lie. We discussed Corinne's pick for Nonfiction November, Republic of Lies: American Conspiracy Theorists and Their Surprising Rise to Power by Anna Merlan. First up for Nonfiction November is Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop by Danyel Smith. Corinne has COVID and also a bit of trouble with her audio up top, so yeah, It's her, hi, she's the problem, it's her. In the last week and a half, Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, has appeared on Tucker Carlson's show on Fox News, been photographed with far-right provocateur Candace Owens wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt, and tweeted that he was going “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE” (which landed him in social media jail). Redacted footage from the Fox interview revealed that Ye made a number of antisemitic comments there too, referring to Hannukah as a vehicle for “financial engineering” and casting Black people as the real Jews, with non-Black Jews as imposters. In the wake of these comments, Jewish organizations have raised the alarm about worsening antisemitism; meanwhile, tensions have been rising online between some Black and Jewish people, playing out familiar grievances about acknowledgement and allyship. What, if anything, can we learn from this instance of high-profile antisemitism and this latest round of Black–Jewish discourse? And is there any path to solidarity between those targeted by Ye's anti-Black and antisemitic ideas? Jewish Currents contributing writer Rebecca Pierce, Atlantic staff writer Adam Serwer, and Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel discussed Ye's antisemitism. Note: This episode was taped on Friday, October 14th, before it was announced that Ye plans to buy the right-wing social media platform Parler. Stay tuned at the end of the episode for a postscript from Pierce and Angel on this new development. The anti-child sex trafficking group Operation Underground Railroad has become increasingly popular in the age of QAnon, and has been buoyed in part by President Trump. But not all of the stories OUR tells its donors hold up to scrutiny, and some of its so-called "missions" to save women and children from sex trafficking have been described by insiders as amateurish at best. A tough-talking anti-human-trafficking organization with ties to Donald Trump relied on a tip from a psychic for at least one of its failed “raids” in Haiti, according to reporters who have tracked the group. “They have defended the use of psychics and made it sound like something that law enforcement does all the time, which they might do, but that doesn't make it a good idea,” Vice senior staff writer Anna Merlan said on the latest episode of The Daily Beast's Fever Dreams podcast. For much of the past month, a new addition has joined the audioscape of cities across the country: fireworks. Loud ones. Keep-you-up-all-night-ones. And during those sleepless hours in the dark of night, the brain can do some remarkable dot-connecting. One Twitter thread went mega-viral, conjecturing: “My neighbors and I believe that this is part of a coordinated attack on Black and Brown communities by government forces. [...] It’s meant to sound like a war zone because a war zone is what it’s about to become.” That the fireworks were being supplied by the NYPD to cause chaos and provide pretext for a violent police crackdown sounds unlikely. And people reporting out the story have found little evidence to back it up, finding instead that vendors in neighboring states were selling the fireworks in bulk, at a discount, to young people looking to blow off steam. But those drawing connections between fireworks and law enforcement should perhaps be given a pass. After all, some of the most outlandish-sounding conspiracy theories in American history have, after a time, proven to be true. For this week's podcast extra, we're revisiting a conversation from last year between Bob and journalist Anna Merlan, author of Republic of Lies, who explained that conjuring up conspiracies is a pastime as old as history.

Journalist Anna Merlan joins BoA to discuss conspiracies and the world of conspiracy theorists.
A conspiracy theory about the death of millionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has been turned into a meme. The phrase "Jeffrey Epstein didn't kill himself" is appearing in tweets, TikToks, on live television, even on ugly Christmas sweaters. The New York City Medical Examiner's Office conclusively ruled Epstein's death in jail was a suicide. But that hasn't stopped the conspiracy theory from thriving on both the left and right sides of the political spectrum. Today on Front Burner, Anna Merlan, author of Republic of Lies: American conspiracy theorists and their surprising rise to power, on why she thinks this conspiracy theory has morphed into a widely shared, macabre meme.
In this episode we talk about the religious angle of conspiracy theories with Anna Merlan – journalist and author of Republic of Lies, a fascinating new book on American conspiracies – what they are, where they come from, and what they mean for the religious landscape of the U.S.A. Along the way we talk conspiracy theory cruises, U.F.O.s and much much more… listen in. We know “THEY” already are!!
Are lizard people real? Was 9/11 an inside job? Is the government really out to get you? We can't conclusively answer those questions, but we will be exploring these topics in September's series, State of Conspiracy. State of Conspiracy is hosted by Professor Kathryn Olmsted a professor of History at UC Davis and scholar of conspiracy theories. This week, Professor Olmsted sits down with author Anna Merlan to discuss how Donald Trump successfully used conspiracy theories to gain national attention and get elected and why the surge in government conspiracy theories today may less funny and more insidious than we think.
Elie Honig, former assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, and author Anna Merlan join co-hosts Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman on “Skullduggery.” Jeffrey Epstein is the focus, with Honig giving us a verbal behind-the-scenes tour of the Manhattan jail that was holding Epstein prior to his death by suicide. How could something like this even happen? Merlan joins to discuss all the conspiracies that came to the forefront just hours after his death was reported. Just hours after financier Jeffrey Epstein's apparent death by suicide, President Donald Trump retweeted a conspiracy theory alleging the Clinton family's involvement in killing the accused sex trafficker. So what better time to bring you this in-depth conversation with writer Anna Merlan, whose book "Republic of Lies: American Conspiracy Theorists and Their Surprising Rise to Power" has only become more and more relevant as the conspiracist in chief amplifies yet another sinister lie. Merlan has spent years diving deep into the world of conspiracy theories. The result is a meticulously researched firecracker of a book, documenting incidents as early as the burning of ancient Rome, and as recently as the many conspiracy theories that bedeviled the 2016 election. Our assistant news editor Becca Andrews talked to Merlan to understand the roots of this increasingly powerful phenomenon, and discuss how inequality and racism beget conspiracy—and why empathy is important when writing about true believers.
Even after the discredited story is retracted, the internet, unwilling to let the story go, takes the case in an entirely new direction, targeting Rich’s brother Aaron as a co-conspirator. Investigative reporter Anna Merlan of Gizmodo Media Group's special projects desk discusses her new book, Republic of Lies, about conspiracy...
On this episode of The Open Mind, we're delighted to welcome author Anna Merlan to discuss the acceleration of lies in the public discourse and their historical and contemporary power. While fear and paranoia have always animated American politics, there is an unprecedented rush of incentives to deceive the public through monetization, popularization and dissemination. So now we'll try to cover ample ground from the beginning history of the false flag to Hofstadter's critique and McCarthy-era politics to QAnon, birtherism, Pizza-Gate, Seth Rich, trutherism, and of course UFOs.If you're concerned as I am about the outsize influence of conspiracy theorists, disinformation and willful gullibility in American life, you must read Anna's compelling new book “The Republic of Lies: American Conspiracy Theorists and Their Surprising Rise to Power.”

Jezebel features editor Kelly Stout, staff writer Ellie Shechet, and Special Projects Desk senior reporter Anna Merlan talk Omarosa, Steve Bannon, and Roy Moore—and dig deep into the mystery of Rand Paul’s fight with his neighbor.
Since marrying Aaliyah when she was 15 years old, R. Kelly has been dogged with accusations and rumors about sexual coercion and misconduct toward much younger women, many of them under the legal age of consent.
