City Scenes is the feature where we examine the music scene of a different city each week. As we go along we're moving through the alphabet from A to Z and this week we're on the letter F and today we're in Frankfurt Germany. Frankfurt is a city of 750, 000 people that sits on the banks of the river Main in Central Germany. It is a global financial hub with the european central bank and Deutsche bank as well as many other financial institutions holding their headquarters in the city. It's also one of the biggest transport hubs in the world, Frankfurt airport is the primary hub of the lufthansa airline and is in fact the airport with the most direct flight routes in the world. but as we will see, the city also has a wealthy cultural and musical history. It's the city where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe the famous German writer was born. It's also the birth city of Wolgang Flur, an original member of Kraftwerk but as Kraftwerk's music was all made in Dusseldorf we're not going to be hearing any of that today. Instead we start with some Eurodisco, a genre that seems to be a bit of a thing in Frankfurt. In the late 1970s, a multiinstrumentalist called Kurt Hauenstein, founded a group called Supermax. Supermax went on to produce some massive hits in the genre of eurodisco that saw the group touring the world. The next group we listen to could probably be summed up as Frankfurt's answer to ABBA. Arabesque emerged in Hamburg in 1975 and went on to get huge success around the world. Chilly was another eurodisco act that were active in Hamburg in the late 1970s They produced the mega hit called ‘For Your Love' which took off in discos around the world and has since been reinterpreted and remixed by DJs and producers countless times. Like in Chicago and in Detroit, the legacy of that eurodsicoinformed what came after it in Frankfurt. Like Detroit in particular, Frankfurt became a huge center for the newly developing sound of German Techno in the 1990s. Frankfurt these days is synonymous with electronic music. One act that blew up in the 1990s with their own type of eurodance, trance leaning techno pop is a duo called Jam and Spoon. So Frankfurt is a city known for its contributions to eurodisco and electronic music and one of Frankfurts biggest contemporary electronic producers is Isolee. We end this episode of City Scenes with a track of his called Allowance. Dustin born in September, 1989 came as a Brandenburger to the world and grew up in parallel to the just growing German Techno scene and they encountered each other in 2006. Since then he spends his weekends in Techno clubs and bought his own turntables after 2 years of clubbing there in order to learn to play with vinyl…Since the vinyl became very limited in variety, he made the switch to playing digitaly shortly after. After being on the dance floor in for years at TREIBHAUS in Glöwen, Dustin received by chance his very first opportunity to play on New Year's Eve in 2010/11 and set therefore a step in a world still unknown to him. TREIBHAUS recognized his talent and gave him the possibility to play at many other gigs and became one of the residents there. Now he’s made his first steps into producing the sound he played for all those years and hopes to release quality Techno on well respected labels.

Alexander Kowalski (DE) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 28 Pt. 2 Bio: Kowalski was born in 1978 in Greifswald, German Democratic Republic. He moved to Berlin with his family in 1986. In the beginning of the 90's the first techno releases from Detroit came to Berlin, and Kowalski was a big fan of those. Later on, he started making music on his Amiga, and in 1997 he bought equipment with a friend and arranged a studio. His first production "The Wide Theatre" was then released on the Tresor Headquarters Compilation (Tresor 094) under the name DisX3. That kick-started his career. Techno has many faces - and in recent years, with the emergence of Alexander Kowalski, the German Techno scene has gained a new shooting star. At the end of the nineties he became known through his first live acts in Berlins' most known techno club, Tresor. In 2002 he made his musical break-through with the release of his second full length, "Progress", an album which was highly acclaimed by both fans and critics alike. Today Alexander Kowalski is a new star in the Techno sky, and a greatly demanded live act, producer and remixer. Kowalski elegantly fuses elements from classic Detroit and historical Berlin techno sound. His affection for sophisticated bass lines, deep beats and challenging arrangements breathes new life into Techno. He knows perfectly how to program his tracks to sound straight, deep, housy, dubby or funky - and this versatility is one of the reasons for his reputation under both ravers and underground-oriented techno nerds. In August 2003 his new album "Response" appears on the German label Kanzleramt - and the critics are already enthusiastic: Kowalski is on the front cover of Raveline and Groove (08/2003), the two most important German dance music magazines.
