Ed Welburn is the former General Motors VP of Global Design and was responsible for the design of all GM vehicles worldwide from 2003 to 2016, the same position once held by Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell. He was only the sixth person to have led GM Design in the company’s history. He was involved in the design of over 540 cars and trucks for GM. Ed was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame, received the Eyes On Design Lifetime Achievement Award, and is the only car designer to have his archives placed in the Smithsonian Museum. A wing of the Detroit Institute Of Arts has been named in his honor, and he received an Honorary Doctorate Of Fine Arts from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Ed is an active board member of Tony Bennett’s foundation, Exploring The Arts and a judge at Concours events including Pebble Beach, Amelia Island, Hilton Head, Suzuka Japan, and Radnor Hunt. In this new chapter in Ed’s life, he is CEO of Welburn Media and is an Executive Producer of an exciting movie project.

With all the 2Q numbers in Toyota sold more than a million more units than it did last year when Japan was ravaged by natural disasters. The company also may have passed GM again to take the sales crown. In our tour of the GM Design Center we saw a lot of great cars, including one with an interesting history. The Nurburgring gets a bail out to stave off bankruptcy. All that and more, plus we ask Ed Welburn where GM's super secret Studio X is located.

The world's largest automaker wants to move away from the current regional design scheme and toward one with global brand designers. Renault plans to add two luxury brands to its portfolio in an effort to bolster its sales and image. Ford and GM are touting their own environmental accomplishments. Cox Automotive gave a mid-year update and EV leasing is growing dramatically. Automakers are pushing back on NHTSA's new automatic emergency braking rules. VW is turning to Rivian to try to solve it's software problems and BMW has a new plug-in hybrid M5. While someone that owns the rights to the Delorean brand has shown an electric concept, a UK company is restomodding original examples. Rimac has shifted from electric supercars to robotaxis with the help of Mobileye. Volvo is also having software issues that have caused a stop sale on the new EX30 in Europe, while tarrifs have delayed the US launch.
