Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life.  She offers Year of Inquiry, a vibrant membership community of inquirers Sept-June each year. Learn more about Year of Inquiry at https://workwithgrace.com/year-of-inquiry Grace also has a special love for those suffering from eating issues including disordered eating (disordered thinking) of all kinds--having suffered from this behavior and thought/feeling process herself and finding an unshakable peace within around eating, food, health and behaviors with eating.  Grace works with all kinds of compulsions, habits and addictions as they are all the same thing: a pull to some behavior, substance or activity in order to help us with our stressful feelings and thoughts. As Byron Katie offers us (founder of The Work); when we believe what we think, it creates unnecessary suffering. When we question what we think, we feel lighter and less serious about what is. We even begin to laugh. We notice who we really are is peaceful already, a human being living life as best we can--learning, growing, loving.  In the public sessions on this youtube channel, we have all-group inquiry sessions called First Friday Inquiry, we have interviews with practitioners of The Work, we have Eating Peace videos (on the eating peace playlist) and we have individual sessions in The Work by courageous people willing to be recorded for Peace Talk podcast and this channel. Thanks to everyone involved in what is shared here on this channel, as it is great service to others in the world who find their way here and who are curious about life without "believing" thought all the time.   In all-group sessions and solo sessions, we begin with a judgment...and move into the four questions and turnarounds. Willingness to be real and honest with your thinking is the first powerful step in The Work.  No one ever has to share when attending Friday Inquiry, and thank you when you do.   For the Work With Grace programs and more information, and to get on the Grace Notes mailing list for updates and sharing of all kinds around The Work, please visit www.workwithgrace.com To receive notice of Eating Peace programs, videos and vlog posts, visit www.workwithgrace.com/eating-peace and join the mailing list. There is a pervasive stereotype of tattoo culture as relating to an underworld of scoundrels, sailors, and ne'er-do-wells, yet it has existed in the West as a professionalized art practice for centuries. Drawing on extensive new research and unprecedented access to largely unpublished private archives of photographs, art, and ephemera, in Tattoos: The Untold History of a Modern Art (Yale University Press, 2024) Dr. Matt Lodder offers a new perspective on the history of commercial tattooing in Europe and the United States, beginning even before it emerged as a recognizable profession in the mid-nineteenth century. In the process, he shows that the art of tattoo has long been both practiced and commissioned by individuals across economic, gender, and class divides; he also examines the stylistic trends that have shaped tattoo's development as an art form over its history. Lodder introduces the many artists and professionals who shaped tattoo history, including early figures like Martin Hildebrandt, the first-known professional tattoo artist in the West; prominent woman artists like Grace Bell and Jessie Knight; mid-twentieth-century icons like Sailor Jerry and Les Skuse and the Bristol Tattoo Club; and contemporary industry stars including Ed Hardy, Davy Jones, and the Leu family. Richly illustrated with rarely published images, this important book is the first to examine the history of tattoo in the west as both a serious profession and an art form. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. When we're out of work or want more money to thrive more expansively in our lives, it can be very stressful. Job hunts look daunting.  We also may have some troubling thoughts about jobs themselves. It's possible to question any thought at all. When "fat thoughts" appear, as they do for so many of us who have been plagued by concerns about acceptance and rejection of the shape of the body, it hurts.  It's possible to relax our beliefs about those thoughts themselves, while also questioning the belief "I need to stop thinking these fat thoughts".  Is it true? Her scientific background in chemistry at university, followed by years in the corporate world, is a fascinating backdrop to the study of enlightenment and eventually a great expansion of ways humans can meet themselves.  You can find Helen and her enlightenment summit at: https://wildfigsolutions.co.uk/2023/12/15/enlightenment-summit/ Her book is here: https://thoughtfulraven.co.uk/the-complete-book-of-awakening/ ********************** Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life.  She offers Year of Inquiry, a vibrant membership community of inquirers Sept-June each year.  Grace also has a special love for those suffering from eating issues including disordered eating (disordered thinking) of all kinds--having suffered from this behavior and thought/feeling process herself and finding an unshakable peace within around eating, food, health and behaviors with eating.  Grace works with all kinds of compulsions, habits and addictions as they are all the same thing: a pull to some behavior, substance or activity in order to help us with our stressful feelings and thoughts. We look at willpower, discipline, structure, laws, rules and resolutions....and notice how often they have failed and don't appear to work.  Yet, someone asks "does this mean I should never try to stop my behavior, I should just DO it whenever the urge arises to do it?" This is swinging in the complete opposite direction and using the thought "willpower doesn't work" to give the excuse to just fall into a behavior that isn't ultimately what I want.  What we truly want, is for the behavior that seems to be "required" to become unnecessary and irrelevant. What we truly want is to no longer be interested in the behavior.  The only way I have found to do this is to see what I'm thinking, believing and feeling it does for me--and to investigate this.  In this video I share an exercise where you can begin. The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.  Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life.  She offers Year of Inquiry, a vibrant membership community of inquirers Sept-June each year. When we do something over and over that doesn't seem to serve our best interests, we can feel so defeated, ashamed, furious.  Our situation looks severe.  The other day I got a note from a listener: My life is falling apart, I need help, I can't stop taking pills and my husband has divorced me and I live far away from my kids now, with my health plummeting. I feel disabled, I'm frightened. Many of us feel this way when we do a thing over and over without changing, even though we've promised and thought about changing thousands of times before.  Here's one thing to notice today, to consider (even though it may be tricky): Who are you without your thoughts? Peace Talk Episode 240: three secrets that can transform your life through self-inquiry

Peace Talk

There are many approaches to transformation that invite us to question our thoughts, especially when we self-sabotage, or get overwhelmed with feelings.  Our blind spots are in our minds.  Self-inquiry can allow insights to emerge, but how do we do it? Three secrets to allowing the transformative energy of self-inquiry to work, with comments about why I see these as so important.  1) loosening up on control--quit trying to control, quit, change, force, aggress. The longing for control seems like a compulsion in itself. 2) question the belief "There is something wrong". Very strange when it appears something is off...we are not pretending this doesn't hurt, but we can question what our predicament means, and notice the knife-wielding that comes with the belief "this is wrong/I am wrong", especially towards ourselves. 3) allowing whatever is present to be here, as it is. When we're focused on how we should be good, and we aren't, it really hurts within. It feels like we're failures and we have proof. What if we've been mistaken about our goodness and badness, or evaluating everything in this way? Thousands of people have encountered and practiced The Work since it was first offered as a simple self-inquiry method by Byron Katie in the late 1980s/early 1990s.  While the questions are similar to a deep exploration of life, being human, and personal thought....the process called The Work has made it very simple in a step-by-step format, especially good for when the mind is spinning.  But what happens with many of us when we just do NOT keep engaging in the practice? We know meditation is good for us, but we drop it and get busy, and drift away from being with ourselves in silence more and more. This is very normal, and very common in a busy thinking mind. When we're identified with whatever the mind is saying, we get caught in its sweetness and terribleness. Oh the drama! Who would we be without our stories? Just coming back, into inquiry, noticing how much we like to notice, and how curious we really are. First Friday is an open interactive experiential session offered to the general public, using The Work of Byron Katie as the primary modality of investigation and self-realization.  In this session, a man whose wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer shares his fear and despair and his thoughts about cancer--and how it causes long-term suffering. Other people also shared their own experiences of targeting a cause of suffering (divorce, anxiety, compulsive eating, abandonment, child, husband, spouse).  Is it the event, thing or person over there who is causing suffering long term? Or is it my thoughts about that event, condition, thing or person that causes long-term suffering? Amazing to see what happens. Peace Talk Episode 234: Do I need to regulate my nervous system to help with my overeating?

When we overeat, over-drink, over-spend, over-screen, over-porn, over-think....we're certainly noticing a struggle with ourselves. There can be great wisdom in seeing this, and wondering about it all relates to the body, our nervous systems, a sense of the physical aspect of being. People refer often to "somatic" experiences in the process of healing and therapy. This means to make full contact with the body and its communication. To experience emotions in the body, feelings, sensations, tiny movements. But do we need to actively regulate our nervous system?  It can really help to know how to calm ourselves down, and we can also question anything stressful about our approach to this process; in this case, "I" have to regulate my nervous system. Or I "have to" regulate my nervous system. I love seeing that while I want to be a great co-partner in allowing the body and mind to calm down, it is also actively calming down without having to do anything really. The, the "over-doing" might be a way we've gotten used to helping things calm down, but I love questioning the belief that the activated or calming down experiences are who we are.
