"If" can be a very important word if someone thinks it means they can lose their salvation. That is how some might interpret 1 Corinthians 15:2 where the Apostle Paul says, "you are saved , if you hold fast to that word which I preached to you." The word that Paul preached is the gospel he reminds them of in verses 3-4. The readers had received the gospel and believed it, so there is no doubt they are saved (as many other passages in the epistle show). They were saved or delivered from hell. But what does Paul mean by using the present tense as if to say "you are being saved"? He is telling them that their steadfastness to the truths of the gospel will continue to deliver them from sin. That is why he reminds them about the death of Christ for our sins and His resurrectioin in verses 3-4. Those truths that were the foundation of our salvation are also the foundation of our Christian growth and sanctification, as also explained by our union with Christ in Romans 6:2-5. If they depart from these identification truths, then their salvation will be "in vain," or not reach its intended purpose of their sanctification. The gospel truths that saved us also sanctify us, or continue to save us. This episode is from GraceNotes no. 62. In this episode of GraceNotes from no. 87 "Arminianism and the Gospel of Grace," we dive into the theology of Arminianism and its views on the gospel of grace. Named after Dutch theologian Jacob Arminius, Arminianism challenges the strong determinism of Calvinism, particularly in its views on salvation, free will, and God's grace. We'll explore the historical roots of Arminianism, from Arminius' objections to John Calvin's doctrines to the formalization of Arminian theology in the early 17th century. Through this study, we'll unpack key points of disagreement between Arminianism and Calvinism, such as the nature of election, the concept of prevenient grace, and the question of whether salvation can be lost. While Arminianism emphasizes human free will and the ability to choose salvation, it also presents challenges to the gospel of grace, particularly when it comes to assurance of salvation and the idea of works in maintaining salvation. How do Arminians reconcile their belief that salvation can be lost with the Bible's teaching on God's unconditional grace? We'll also look at how Arminianism compares to biblical teachings on eternal security, examining the struggles many believers face with assurance of salvation when their security is tied to human effort rather than God's grace. This episode seeks to bring clarity to these complex theological systems and highlight the importance of understanding the full gospel of grace. Whether you're familiar with the terms TULIP, prevenient grace, or the history of Arminianism, this episode will equip you to better understand both Arminian and Calvinist views and how they relate to the truth of the gospel. Join us as we unpack the core of the gospel message—salvation by grace alone, through faith alone—and why it's essential for believers to rest in the assurance of eternal security.

Suicide by anyone is a terrible tragedy filled with uncertainty by those who kill themselves and those who will miss them. Unfortunately, it is a reality in this world. But what about a Christian who commits suicide? Or, is it possible that a Christian can commit suicide? And does that Christian lose salvation? This presentation is from GraceLife's GraceNotes series, no. 26. It follows previous discussions of eternal security, and the extent of God's forgiveness. Suicide of the Christian relates to those issues. Some think that a Christian, who commits suicide cannot be forgiven because a dead person cannot ask for forgiveness or repent from their sin. The question is, is God's grace, big enough to cover even in an confessed sin like suicide. It is clear from the Scriptures that suicide is a sin because it is taking a life that does not belong to that person (1 Cor. 6:19-20). Some would use 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 to argue that a suicide is punished with eternal destruction, but that passage is talking about the church and a temporal ruin that comes to those who harm the church. Some people would say that someone who commits suicide proves that he or she was not a true believer. But the Bible evidences Christians are capable of all kinds of sins. If someone dies with unconfessed sin, there is comfort in the promise of 1 John 1:9 that God cleanses us not only from confessed sins, but from "all unrighteousness." This is a condition of fellowship with God, not salvation. Besides, all believers have some sins they are unaware of and therefore unconfessed. Romans 5:20 promises that God's grace always exceeds our sins, and that would include the terrible sin of suicide. This should not be an excuse to commit the act, but a reason to live and grow in that grace and serve God. #GraceNotes26#SuicideSalvation#GraceLifeMinistries#AbundantGrace

When we're out of work or want more money to thrive more expansively in our lives, it can be very stressful. Job hunts look daunting. We also may have some troubling thoughts about jobs themselves. In the inquirer who did The Work today, she thought of her past jobs as requiring her to control chaos and worry about others emotional lives, or the job was boring and urgent. Who are we without our beliefs about jobs? How can we live our turnarounds about working. Turning these thoughts about jobs around: Jobs are interesting, relaxed, and unfolding as needed. The inquirer found how she could approach her former job as someone "allowing order" instead of "controlling chaos". Her prescription for happiness. Can a person once saved lose their salvation? Is it true--once saved always saved? What does the Bible say? Charlie takes a deep dive into this controversial issue. Much of the world believes that a saved person can lose their salvation. Charlie offers twelve arguments from the Bible that support eternal security. Then he explains how believing you can lose your salvation creates problems. Some people point to Bible passages that seem to indicate a believer can lose salvation, but Charlie shows how to approach these passages. He also deals with common arguments used to say salvation can be lost. The most common of these is that teaching eternal security promotes or encourages sin. Charlie shows how this is a hollow argument. The importance of the believer's eternal security includes assurance of salvation that rests in God's faithfulness to His promises to glorify all those He justifies. Be sure to share this episode with the many people who need to hear this message. #GraceNotes24 #GraceLifeMinistries #EternalSecurity #AssuranceofSalvation

When we come into a new calendar year, there is often talk about resolutions, the "word" we want for the year, dreams we might have for our lives. We really consider what a good life is, and what it is not. Today, we looked at the belief "my life would be better if....." in this inquiry today, to find also that this life--the one I am given and the one I experience--is the one for me. Can we see advantages for what has happened that looks "not good"? Who are we without our stories about good lives (and it doesn't mean we shouldn't have stories)? What is it like when we believe something terrible, horrendous, difficult is happening? We don't notice how the weather changes....and how resilient we are. A man questions his belief that in badness when his wife is diagnosed with cancer. Do we hear enough about the Judgment Seat of Christ where every Christian must give an account of how his or her life was used? Some theologies dismiss this judgment altogether seeing only one judgment called The Great White Throne. This results in salvation by works because that is the criteria for the GWT judgment. Even in churches and with preachers who believe in the JSOC, this event is not taught much. Maybe as a consequence many Christians live carelessly not knowing or caring that they will be held accountable by Christ. Charlie sits down with Dr. Paul Weaver to discuss this issue from Charlie's GraceNotes no. 105. This podcast is a re-broadcast of Dr. Weaver's Bible and Theology Matters podcast and YouTUbe video. The JSOC is for believers only; the GWT is for unbelievers only. It is crucial that Christians keep an accurate and applicable view of the Judgment Seat of Christ. Dr. Weaver served with Word of Life as dean in their Bible Institutes in Hungary and New York before becoming an Associate Professor of Bible Exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary. You can get his podcast and YouTube videos at www.BibleAndTheologyMatters.com. #FreeGrace#JudgmentSeatofChrist#GraceNotes#GraceLifeMinistries

Don't Worry, I Will Explain It1 John 3:8 “Everyone who commits sin is a child of the devil; for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.”I read this verse and thought, “Nope, I don't want to go there.” Actually, I read this verse and then read the next two verses after it. 1 John 3:8-10 says, “Everyone who commits sin is a child of the devil; for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. Those who have been born of God do not sin, because God's seed abides in them; they cannot sin, because they have been born of God. The children of God and the children of the devil are revealed in this way: all who do not do what is right are not from God, nor are those who do not love their brothers and sisters.” Ok, after hearing all that do you see why I didn't want to touch this verse? First of all, I didn't really understand it. If I sin I am a child of the devil? What does that even mean? We all sin, don't we? Then it says Those born of God do not sin. But wait, I am born of God and yet I do sin? It is definitely confusing and not something I felt qualified to talk about. Secondly, I didn't want someone to hear this verse , or read it in the transcript and then think they weren't a child of God because they sin. Because let's all be honest, we all sin. So, I was happy to skip this one and go on to find another verse. I felt the Holy Spirit stop me and ask, what does this verse mean? What if someone already read it and didn't stop to ask what it means? What if someone is walking around thinking they are no longer my child just because they sin?I am always humbled when the Holy Spirit reminds me of the purpose for this podcast. It is not to talk about all the things I understand. It is not to talk about things I really love talking about. It is to help myself and you, all those listening, to understand scripture a little better. My purpose is to help you walk a boldy with Jesus one verse at a time. The only way to do this is to take difficult scriptures, ones I don't understand and figure them out, examine them, research them, and then share that with you. I may not alway get it right, but I do try my best and I ask the Holy Spirit to take care of the rest. I am sure I will keep needing to be reminded to stop and examine a verse if I don't understand it because the enemy loves to try and stop me by telling me I am not qualified to talk about the scripture. He tells me I don't know what I am doing and so I can't help others. Do you see how he takes a kernel of truth and twists it? He is right, I am not qualified and I don't always know what the scriptures mean. However, the way he twists it is because I am not sharing just my thoughts on it. I am researching and looking to those that do know the answers. I am taking the time to explore the meaning and then sharing what I learned from those that are qualified so that you don't have to take that time. If something I say is confusing, or you still don't understand the verse, I urge you to reach out and let me know. I would be happy to explore it in more detail with you. Or you can explore it on your own as well. I just type “What is the meaning of 1 John 3:8” or whatever verse I am looking at in the search bar on the internet and usually a list of articles come up. Whatever it is in the Bible we are trying to understand, there are probably plenty of other people that have come before us that have asked the same question. Look for the answers they found. I will put the links to two of the articles I read in the show notes in case you want to read the full articles. Now that I explained all that, what did I discover? What does this confusing verse mean? From what I found, I understand it to mean that when we are sinning we are a child of Satan, meaning he is influencing those behaviors. When we are following God's ways, God is influencing those behaviors. I feel the Holy Spirit just gave me an analogy that made me smile. It is one that if you have kids you have probably said it and even if you don't you probably heard your parents say it. When our kids are not behaving I tell Tony they are his kids and when they are behaving I say they are my kids. Of course they are all both of our kids all the time. However, when I say that I am implying that his DNA is what is influencing the kids misbehavior and my DNA is influencing their good behavior. It made me smile when this thought came to me because I could just picture God up in heaven shaking his head, looking at Satan and saying, nope, they are your kids today. I know He doesn't do this, but it made me smile remember all the times, Tony and I went back and forth, nope, these are your kids. One thing everything I read agreed on is that this verse is not determining your salvation. This verse is not saying because you sin you are a child of Satan and you are going to Hell. That is not the case. It is not saying if you want to go to heaven you can't sin. It is not talking about your salvation in any way. We are all born with a sinful nature. Ever since sin enter the world, it has plagued us. Sin entered the world because of Satan. He brought it here and when we sin it is because of His influence. It is because we are allowing his influence to shape our behaviors. We are cooperating with him. However, the ending of this verse says, “The Son of God was revealed for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.” This means that although we were born with original sin and a sinful nature, Jesus was sent to destroy that. If you have been baptized you are received the Holy Spirit living inside of you. Even though we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us we also have Satan trying to influence our behaviors, trying to get us to go against what God says. One example I found in one of the articles talked about Matthew 16:23 when Jesus said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan!” He was revealing the source of Peter's rebuke of Christ by which Peter demonstrated that he was representing Satan's purpose, not God's.I pray this explanations clears up some of the confusion surrounding this verse. The verse is not saying you will go to hell if you sin. It is not saying you belong to Satan if you sin. It is saying that while you are sinning you are under the influence of Satan. It is a good reminder as sometimes we can write off little sins. We can say, that wasn't so bad. We can question, is that really a sin, does it really matter. I think when we read this verse, it can speak to those situations. If you are sinning you are cooperating with the enemy. Does it matter if it is a little cooperation or a lot of cooperation, let me ask you this question. If one of your loved ones was being influenced by someone who was sent here to steal, kill and destroy, would it matter to you that they were only being influenced a little? God cares deeply about even our smallest decisions. Instead of being offended by this verse, let's take it as a warning to try harder not to be influenced by the devil. Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those who are listening to this episode today. Lord we want to follow your ways, please help us. We want to only be influenced by you. Please help shield us from the influence of the enemy. Please help us put on your armor Lord. Lord, I ask you to help each one of us understand what this verse is saying and I ask that if we don't understand it you will inspire us to go deeper. Lord, we want to understand your Word. We thank you for your word and thank you for giving it to us. You are truly remarkable. We love you Lord and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Observations in how the Lord speaks in details.
Of all the words Jesus uttered, perhaps the most profound and important word is found in John 19:30 translated "It is finished!" But what did that mean to those who heard it and what does it mean to us today.? All over the world, people are working hard to earn heaven or be worthy of eternal salvation. So what did Jesus finish? Charlie names six things that that were finished at the cross by the Lord Jesus: Satan's fate, Old Testament prophesies, the requirements of the Law, the appeasement of God's wrath toward sin, God's purposes for sending Him, and the sealing of the New Covenant. Knowing this liberates the futility of trying to earn God's gracious gift of salvation. Listen and be set free from uncertainty and doubt about whether you are good enough for God's salvation. The work has been done by Jesus Christ. For more you can also access GraceNotes no. 104 on our "GL Ministries" app or at GraceLife.org/GraceNotes. #Itisfinished #thefinishedworkofChrist #Paidinfull

It's been about a year since the first time I did a grace notes episode, so I'm really excited to share a new edition for this summer. In case you've forgotten or you're new around here, a grace notes episode is my version of answering the question, “What's saving your life right now?” It's just naming some blessings whether serious or silly that enrich my life, like grace notes embellish music. So I've just picked out a few simple things I'm enjoying in the present, that might give you ideas for a refreshing experience or even just remind you to pause and reflect with joy on your own grace notes right now.
It's very common in being human to be against situations in life that look threatening. What happens when we question our thoughts that something happening, like death, decline, disease, hardship....is absolutely true? That is really is TERRIBLE? (And it doesn't mean that it is not). When we believe we are right, and we MUST be right, it is stressful...and also can be difficult to let go of. If I let go of this, I might be too passive, I might lose motivation, I might find myself lost, I might never change (gasp), says the mind. Who would we be without thoughts about whatever is happening at all? It doesn't mean we'd be passive. We might be more active than we ever imagined. In person retreat in Seattle is coming! Link to Transcript: https://tinyurl.com/2r63e6tn Episode summary: Whether it's news notifications or work emails, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the stresses of our time every moment of every day. But what if there was something we could do to rekindle the greatest joys of our pasts? How might that shift how we feel in the present moment? Simply reflecting on happy memories has been shown in a lab to reduce stress, activate the reward center in our brain, and uplift our mood. This week, Palestinian-American poet and author Naomi Shihab Nye reminisces on happy memories from her youth and finds the practice soothes her and sparks joyfulness. We also hear from neuroscientist Mauricio Delgado about how the practice changes the way we think and feel, and which types of happy memories serve us best. Practice: For one week or more, spend 5-10 minutes each day writing in response to the following prompt: Think about good memories you have from your past. Write a few paragraphs describing them and one event that you still remember to this date. Please provide as many details as possible, including who was there, so that another person reading what you wrote could understand how you felt at that time. Today's guests: Naomi Shihab Nye is a Palestinian-American poet and author. Her new book of poetry, Grace Notes, will be available May 7. Grace works with all kinds of compulsions, habits and addictions as they are all the same thing: a pull to some behavior, substance or activity in order to help us with our stressful feelings and thoughts. As Byron Katie offers us (founder of The Work); when we believe what we think, it creates unnecessary suffering. When we question what we think, we feel lighter and less serious about what is. We even begin to laugh. We notice who we really are is peaceful already, a human being living life as best we can--learning, growing, loving. In the public sessions on this youtube channel, we have all-group inquiry sessions called First Friday Inquiry, we have interviews with practitioners of The Work, we have Eating Peace videos (on the eating peace playlist) and we have individual sessions in The Work by courageous people willing to be recorded for Peace Talk podcast and this channel. Thanks to everyone involved in what is shared here on this channel, as it is great service to others in the world who find their way here and who are curious about life without "believing" thought all the time. In all-group sessions and solo sessions, we begin with a judgment...and move into the four questions and turnarounds. Willingness to be real and honest with your thinking is the first powerful step in The Work. No one ever has to share when attending Friday Inquiry, and thank you when you do. When we believe we need to get rid of thoughts, especially very repetitive thoughts that return again and again and are painful, it can be even more stressful. It's possible to question any thought at all. When "fat thoughts" appear, as they do for so many of us who have been plagued by concerns about acceptance and rejection of the shape of the body, it hurts. It's possible to relax our beliefs about those thoughts themselves, while also questioning the belief "I need to stop thinking these fat thoughts". Is it true? Can I absolutely know it's true I am fat? Can I know it's true I shouldn't keep thinking I'm fat? Who would I be without my story? In person retreat in Seattle is coming! April 30-May 5, 2024. When we believe something in our lives that doesn't change is keeping us from the center of life itself, that this condition keeps us on the sidelines....it hurts. We want that condition gone. We believe we're doing something wrong, that this condition is present in our lives. Whether it's a health condition like a disease, weight, pain or another ailment, OR this condition is a troubled primary relationship or job title....we can question our beliefs about the presence of this state of affairs in our lives, and see what possibilities can arise when we drop the story of being against What Is. Acceptance and compassion emerges. We can trust life. We can find an open window when a door has closed. In person retreat in Seattle is coming! April 30-May 5, 2024. So many of us are familiar with the thoughts that direct attention to who we are as a person in the world, and how it's coming up short. Then, to add to this list of shortcomings, we say we shouldn't be so self-critical, we should love ourselves. Who would we be without this story? Listen today as a woman finds this thought stressful, and has a motive to not be critical in order to receive the acceptance from another. So innocent the way our minds work with this story. Helen Amery is a coach from the UK who has created the Enlightenment Summit, along with a program following the summit where participants will explore this wonderful topic. As one of the speakers in the summit, I enjoyed interviewing Helen on her journey and how she came to be doing what she does. Her scientific background in chemistry at university, followed by years in the corporate world, is a fascinating backdrop to the study of enlightenment and eventually a great expansion of ways humans can meet themselves. You can find Helen and her enlightenment summit at: https://wildfigsolutions.co.uk/2023/12/15/enlightenment-summit/ Her book is here: https://thoughtfulraven.co.uk/the-complete-book-of-awakening/ ********************** Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life. There is a very common accusation against those who hold to free grace. If we are saved solely by grace through faith in Christ, why can't we as Christians live however we want? You'll often hear it said that this sort of salvation isn't genuine or that it's "fire" insurance. So, the real question is this; Is there such a thing as absolute freedom to do whatever you want to do, or is there something that governs our liberty? Charlie addresses this very common accusation in Galatians 5:13-15. For further reading, see Gracenotes #35 Does Free Grace Teach License and Gracenotes #84 The Christian and the Law
When we have a new year, we often reflect on what this new year will contain, offer, and what we'll experience. If you have problems...we often want them solved. We want them gone. Who would you be without the story "something is blocking my peace, happiness, dream"? The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life. Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life.
