Tattoo 408 is finally back after a long hiatus with a very special guest: Ronita Yvarra. In this episode, Ethan sits down with Ronita to hear the story of how she went from being a teenage artist in East San Jose to one of the region's early female tattooers. Ronita learned the craft under Chuck Marshall, a fixture in South Bay tattoo scene in the '70s and '80s. She shares vivid memories of her apprenticeship, opening her own shop in Paradise and Chico, and so much more. With humor, honesty, and deep reverence for her roots, Ronita offers a window into a lesser-known corner of San Jose's tattoo history.---Here are some things Ethan has been up to:Tattootime: Hardy HitsTaki, Molly, and Ethan's interview on "Books Closed"Ed Hardy's S.F. tattoo shop changed the industry forever. There is a pervasive stereotype of tattoo culture as relating to an underworld of scoundrels, sailors, and ne'er-do-wells, yet it has existed in the West as a professionalized art practice for centuries. Drawing on extensive new research and unprecedented access to largely unpublished private archives of photographs, art, and ephemera, in Tattoos: The Untold History of a Modern Art (Yale University Press, 2024) Dr. Matt Lodder offers a new perspective on the history of commercial tattooing in Europe and the United States, beginning even before it emerged as a recognizable profession in the mid-nineteenth century. In the process, he shows that the art of tattoo has long been both practiced and commissioned by individuals across economic, gender, and class divides; he also examines the stylistic trends that have shaped tattoo's development as an art form over its history. Lodder introduces the many artists and professionals who shaped tattoo history, including early figures like Martin Hildebrandt, the first-known professional tattoo artist in the West; prominent woman artists like Grace Bell and Jessie Knight; mid-twentieth-century icons like Sailor Jerry and Les Skuse and the Bristol Tattoo Club; and contemporary industry stars including Ed Hardy, Davy Jones, and the Leu family. Richly illustrated with rarely published images, this important book is the first to examine the history of tattoo in the west as both a serious profession and an art form. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Over the past few years, we have explored many different facets of the secondhand economy: resellers and the ethics of reselling secondhand items, the various secondhand platforms, the fine art of thrifting, and even where all of the unsold stuff from thrift stores ends up! In this episode we'll learn what it's like to run an independent thrift store, with Sara and Shan of Bargain Thrift Center, a thrift store in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. We will discussHow the unrealistically low prices of ultra fast fashion impact the prices most people are willing to pay for secondhand itemsOpportunities that the secondhand supply chain has to reach more people and match them with the product they are seekingWhat happens to the collectibles and tchotchkes that are flooding thrift stores right now (I call it the “collection industrial complex”)And Sara and Shan's vision for the future of secondhand/thriftingAlong the way, we'll talk an awful lot about Precious Moments and we'll wonder where all of the Ed Hardy stuff ended up at the end of the 00s.Also: Amanda shares why she is feeling optimistic right now.Follow Bargain Thrift Center on Instagram: @bargainthriftcenterGet your Clotheshorse merch here: https://clotheshorsepodcast.com/shop/If you want to share your opinion/additional thoughts on the subjects we cover in each episode, feel free to email, whether it's a typed out message or an audio recording: amanda@clotheshorse.worldDid you enjoy this episode? Ed Hardy is the most impactful tattooer of our time. Now that he no longer working, does his influence end?[Watch this episode on YOUTUBE]Ed's legendary San Francisco shop, Tattoo City, closed its doors for good yesterday. His publishing company, Hardy Marks no longer has him at the helm. Does his influence end now that these two huge vehicles for how he performed and shared his work are in his past? While the shop is now gone, sadly, Ed handed the book publishing torch to a very capable team, Taki and Molly Kitamura. With the experience of making amazing books of their own, documenting and sharing pieces of tattoo culture and history (in a way reminiscent of Ed himself), I can't imagine Hardy Marks landing in the care of anyone better. One of their first projects is reintroducing the Tattoo Time series, with new issues to come soon. Well, that was certainly a wild weekend and after everything that went down, I hope you're a bit sober because there is a lot to unpack today. FYI, I'm not sober but that's beyond the point, let's get into this steaming pile. So Angi was at the show event at Cork & Kerry on Friday when Southpaw came in and tried to knock Tommy Hawk out of her DM's and then she went to a Top 5 of All Time Metallica show (when pressed what was knocked out of her top 5, she didn't know because she barely knows what planet she's on most days.) This was followed by a trip to Serb Fest which got her thinking about culture and created a Daily Discussion Topic for us. Angi sought to hear about funny or weird things from people's cultures so we started with hers. Promaja, which is a superstition about leaving two windows open at the same time and them causing a health risk while also allowing for the devil to come in. However, if you tuck your shirt into your pants, it keeps the devil from being able to get to your kidneys. Right, so her people are nuts, let's get to something more grounded in reality from Marris. He explained to us why smoke alarms are always chirping in black peoples houses. Aside from the fact that they never get changed, it has to do with different ones going off at separate times and not knowing which is the one that is going bad so they all just get ignored. In fact, he has vivid memories of being at his grandma's house and playing in the basement while that familiar chirp was going. I also have vivid memories but they mostly come from playing video games online. Anig and Michael both explained that this is a no go in their respective houses because it makes their dogs go nuts. Speaking of Michael, his contribution as a Brit is how much they love to use the "c" word. I personally think I must have been British in a past life because that is my favorite word and I use it to pepper pretty much all of my sentences off air. As for his white American side, he offered the love of Ed Hardy and unseasoned white chicken. I'd offer up mine but I don't know anything interesting about being Lithuanian, Polish and Greek so let's just go right to the Request Line. Kristen is Armenian as they have the evil eye. This is used to ward off bad stuff but if you happen to not be wearing yours, her 98 year old grandmother will pinch your butt which also works as protection it seems. Erin was married to a Serb for 16 years and learned that sitting on concrete causes hemorrhoids and eating popsicles in the winter will give you a sore throat. Chris is Scottish and told us how the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland. He assumed they picked it because they drank too much. Jeff called into discuss how Polack's are cheap and always trying to save money. Eric is Sicillian and he has to get out of bed right foot first or else! If you are looking for more roadie thoughts or have your own, hit up our Facebook group (Angi Taylor Show) and drop us a comment.

Quotes: "I thought this community would be filled with artsy, fartsy people, and they were rough and gnarly, and that pissed me off." "But yeah, you were definitely in that era and that's, in its own weird way, beautiful." "I started seeing in tattoo magazines, you know, I saw Ed Hardy's work, which was very influential for me later on. I was like, oh my God, you know, you can do whatever you want, you know." "I love it. I've been tattooing so many octopuses. And everybody asks me every day, don't you get tired of doing octopus? And I'm like, never." "The key is can I keep good work flowing? That's important to me because I don't want to be tattooing people and messing people up. You know, I want to be doing good work, right?" "Some people, not all people, I don't want to generalize, but some people were upset that I got the shop, you know, they didn't want a female to own the shop because it was It was their club." "The art deserves it. You know, that's the thing. I mean, look at the history of tattoo all across the world, all across the country and how everything's grown and, you know, tattoo artists are artists." The Ghouls are back after an action-packed spring break! On this week's episode, Caroline and special guest Kristi (@kristerious) do their best to fill Grace in on the abject horror that was their three hour tour of the Zak Bagans Haunted Museum in Vegas. This experience rocked them to their very cores and robbed Caroline of the deep reverence she once held for Ghost Adventures. From Jenna Jameson's Satanic ritual abuse basement to Patrick Swayze's teeth, the deeply problematic presentation of the Gary Hell House staircase and a towering man with severe wrestling-induced brain damage, the terror was nonstop inside the walls of the museum. There are things in this world that we will never understand (UNDERSTAND), and one of them is how we as a society allowed an Ed Hardy bro from suburban Illinois to become the next Ed and Loraine Warren. Follow @dental_digest_podcast Instagram Follow @dr.melissa_seibert on Instagram Connect with Melissa on Linkedin Though he does so much in memory of his oldest son, he's also very proud of his two younger sons, Landon (8) and Luke (7). Family is vital to him, and he and his wife Doris enjoy their life in Nashville. With two sons yet to raise, you can also find Dr. Wells giving back by coaching his sons and other kids at various sports. “Our family spends a lot of time on the ball fields,” he says. He also wants us to know the unsung heroes of the Gift of Music Committee: “The Gift of Music Committee consists of: Tony Conway, Ed Hardy, Deb Ham, Rondal Richardson, Ronna Rubin and Jonah Rabinowitz (director of the W.O. Smith School of Music). The foundation and benefit concert has moved far beyond me, and I am so pleased to see it have a life of its own. I know Dustin would be pleased to see the good that is coming from his life, and I am simply grateful for the love that surrounds me and my family.” When Dr. Dennis Wells lost his oldest son, a music major at Belmont University, he was heartbroken. He knew he had to do something to honorDustin's memory and celebrate both his young life and love of music. “The lyrics ‘I get by with a little help from my friends' come to mind when I think back to the beginning of the Dustin J. Wells Foundation,” Wells tells us. “Losing my oldest son was utterly devastating, and for the longest time, I struggled to just exist. However, some of my close friends were diligently searching for ways to help me cope with my loss, and generous people responded with acts of kindness, including over $50,000 in donations toward a fund set up in Dustin's memory. I knew I had a responsibility to honor Dustin and to use those funds in a positive way. Through a national dental organization, the Crown Council, directed by Greg and Steve Anderson, the idea came to have a benefit concert and donate the proceeds to the W.O. Smith School of Music. The Crown Council's annual meeting fell in Nashville within a year of Dustin's death. Calling on some of our dear friends and patients to perform, the Crown Council filled theWildhorse saloon for an emotional night of music and celebration and the Gift of Music event was born.” The result has been extraordinary, a partnership between the Foundation and the W.O. Smith School of Music. The school provides opportunity for the city's children to study music, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. Dr.Wells says his son loved kids and truly enjoyed his time as a counsellor at his church camp, and would have loved the connection with W.O. Smith. Wells still maintains an active role in the organization, providing vision for the Foundation and for the now-annual Gift of Music Concert, which has featured a host of major stars over the past few years. Now, he's looking at ways they can take the model of the Gift of Music and share it with other communities through the Crown Council—a nationwide organization of distinguished dentists. “We're always exploring ways to make the Gift ofMusic a more magical night, as well as how we can generate more revenue for the school,” saysWells. “In 2013 we'll have the show at the Ryman Auditorium for the first time and will once again have the Crown Council attending. We're also exploring using it as a template for other cities and spreading this template through the Crown Council. In fact, some of the students from the school will be performing in January 2012 for the Crown Council in Vegas with hopes that it will inspire other dentists to bring this concept to their respective cities.”
Jeremy Jackson At the tender age of six, Jeremy Jackson got his first taste of show business, booking his first successful commercial for Mattel. From this Jeremy exploded onto the commercial scene starring in dozens of national network ad campaigns including television and print. In addition to his commercial work Jeremy dabbled in daytime television with a seven-episode run on the soap opera Santa Barbara, and got his first feature film shot with a small roll in Shout starring John Travolta. With hard work and determination, he accomplished all of this before his tenth birthday. Soon after in 1990, the ten year old Newport Beach native beat 3,000 other child actors, including a young Leonardo DiCaprio, for the role of Hobie Buchanon on the 90's phenomenon Baywatch. His character remained on the show for its entirety running through 1999. In the midst of all this success Jeremy's creativity did not stop at television. In 1992 Jeremy starred alongside Oscar winning actress Sally Kirkland in the short film The Bulkin Trail for which he received a Youth and Film Award nomination for Best Actor. During his successful acting career Jeremy soared into the music industry releasing two full length albums yielding two top ten hits, several singles, and launching him into a full European tour. During his time on Baywatch, the golden boy surfer from Newport Beach developed a serious substance abuse problem. In 2000, following an arrest, Jeremy decided to change his ways, and committed himself into drub rehab. Since then he has remained clean and sober, and, using his kind heart, natural charisma and magnetic personality, has helped countless peers through their struggles with addiction. In 2003, Jeremy established an invaluable business relationship with Christian Audigier marketing his new clothing line Von Dutch. After the success of the line, Audigier employed Jackson's talents to help catapult his newest line, Ed Hardy. In his time as an event coordinator for Audigier, Jackson has produced over 170 fashion events in 35 states and 5 countries. Jon and Kate Gosselin have 99 problems but 8 of them are not their adorable kids. TLC show “Jon and Kate Plus 8” started out as a great way to support their family, but soon turned into a contemptuous struggle, a nasty divorce, complicated custody agreements, and allegations of cheating and stealing. Who is worse, Jon or Kate? It's hard to say and probably depends on what year it is, but Jon's Ed Hardy and DJ-ing years certainly don't help his case.
