Be sure to visit winnie Anderson.com/nicole to get the show notes for this episode As an Introvert it's easy to feel as though you don't quite fit in. The world seems full of extroverts who love to tell us what's wrong with us. I once had a client who had paid about 10,000$ to spend the day with a guru. Rather than understand what she was struggling with that was contributing to her lack of progress and creating a game plan that would work for her, he told her she didn't have a big enough why and that's the reason she hadn't achieved her goals. What we can find hard to deal with is accepting ourselves as we are, and creating a plan that works with and supports our core personality. With me on this episode is Nicole Isler. Nicole is Chief Empowerment Officer and the founder of Guts, Grit, & Fire Community for sensitive visionaries. She's a spiritual teacher, coach, light leader, and big-time dreamer. She helps other dreamers in various industry segments bring their dreams into the world. Her clients are struggling to deal with things like corporate responsibilities, toxic relationships, messy energy and messy emotions. She helps them close the gap from where they are to living their freedom and feeling fulfilled. Remember my guests and I aren't giving you specific advice. Listen in as Nicole and I discuss: The difference between being sensitive and being easily offended And the difference between being emotional and being dramatic Why embracing and owning your feelings is important to take back your power Where beliefs come from and how to manage them How to deal with negative experiences from the past that may have a hold over you Our mission as spiritual beings Why it's not rejection when someone says no to working with you Repurposing your life events And The role of ego in listening to our intuition As always, listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Our health is incredibly important to us. As more than one health expert has said “Your health is your wealth.” But we can get so caught up in work that our health can definitely suffer. It's why I think it's important to address this topic as it relates to our physical, mental, and emotional health. And just as we used to say back in the early days of computers – garbage in, garbage out. We're learning more and more about the impact of what we eat on gut health and the impact of gut health on our overall wellness. In this episode, the Ingredient Guru, Mira Deesy, helps us get educated about the complex subject that is the food we eat. Mira is a nutrition professional, author, and a popular public speaker. She knows it's not just what you eat but what's IN what you eat that's important. She's author of The Pantry Principle: How to read the label and understand what's really in your food. Mira is a board certified holistic health practitioner whose mission is to educate and empower consumers. She curates the premier organic Lean and Green Subscription box. The monthly box is full of earth-friendly, healthy, sustainable products that are good for you, the planet, and your home. Bonus Content Related Courageous Entrepreneur Show Episodes We mentioned Brodie Welch in the interview. Here are two episodes I did with her: The Courage of Self-Care Can Meditation Help You Achieve Your Goals? Mira talked about hydration and later, sent me the following extra information for you: We talked about the hydration factor. Here's how to figure out how much hydration you need. First, write down your body weight. Divide that in half for the number of ounces needed to be properly hydrated. Divide that number by 8 to get the number of cups of fluid. Take that number, divide it by four and then set a “hydration alarm” approximately every two hours. When the alarm goes off set your liquid in front of you with the goal to drink it before the alarm goes off again. Remember that this does not mean plain water. Too much water is not healthy either. Soups, herbal teas, food with lots of liquid (like watermelon), plus water all count towards a daily hydration goal. Also consider coconut water which is a perfectly balanced electrolyte beverage. Look for a brand with no additives. You can learn more about hydrating foods on the blog. However, nothing prepared her for the acute depressive episode she experienced in 2015. After enduring years of intense work place stress, harassment and bullying, she plummeted into an abyss of darkness, hopelessness and despair the likes of which she had never experienced before. Encouraged by a psychologist, Tracey started a blog, Escaping the Rabbit Hole - my life with depression, to better help her friends understand her depression. Over time, she began to heal and found that out of the darkness and despair, there is hope, there is life after depression. Since the release of the book (affiliate link) that grew out of her blog, Tracey has become a staunch advocate for mental illness and mental health awareness and bullying. She has met with children, teenagers and young adults to talk about bullying and mental illness and was one of the breakout presenters at the TEACH 2019 Conference in Jacksonville, Florida. Her website was recently awarded the silver medal for Best Author Website 2019 at the eLit Awards and her book is a top 10 finalist in the Non-Fiction category at the Author Academy Awards. Tracey has appeared in over 60 podcasts in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and UK, live radio shows and on ABC, NBC and FOX News. Yet, building that foundation can be a challenge and we often come face to face with our own emotional crap. In this episode, Alison Donaghey talks about her journey and the type of thinking that can hold female entrepreneurs back. A single mom at 20, Alison eventually went from collecting welfare to running a thriving house painting business. It took the 2008 recession for Alison to recognize that she had some holes to fill in her business and business-building knowledge. The recession led her to recognize how critical thinking is key to every situation and she realized she had something other than painting to offer people and business owners. She recognized her ability to look at a situation differently and anticipate potential outcomes was the seed that became Domino Thinking. Allison is the author of the international best-selling book, Think opposite – using the domino effect to change your business and change the world”. Today, Alison speaks to entrepreneurs, small business owners and coaches about the power of critical thinking. She's also the host of Domino Thinking. SHOW NOTES If you're a solo professional, freelancer, author, expert or even someone who runs a small firm, today's topic may not be the most sexy thing to hear but it's certainly among the most important topics you'll hear. You may have heard me talk about a friend of mine who ran a small firm that used contractors to do the work. There were periods of time in a year and during planning times when it was just her and her partner. When things went sour in their relationship he somehow got her connected to a lawsuit. Just defending herself and getting herself removed from the situation cleaned out her savings account. Then terror attacks of September 11th happened and business took a nose dive. Then the crash of 2008 happened. She was devastated. I tell you that story because bad things happen to good people and as business professionals it's important we take the steps to protect ourselves. And that's what today's episode is all about. My guest today is ReeJade Richmond. She's an acclaimed business and legal strategist who empowers women to embrace their true power bossness and turn their business into an empire. From rock-solid business structures to impenetrable contracts, she shows them how to get legal, legit, and profitable. A first-generation college graduate, ReeJade finished law school determined to live the fairytale that every up and coming attorney dreams of. Seven figure salary. Partnership. Presitge. ReeJade landed a position with one of the top intellectual property firms in the Detroit Metro area and quickly earned her superstar spot, working on the continued preservation of Malcom X's and Alex Haley's heirs legacy. A complicated labor left her 1.3lb baby in the NICU and Reejade with complex health problems. She ended up bankrupt but risked it all to have it all. She's committed to helping women build something big and understand all the words above the dotted line and the value of the assets that could make or break their bottom line. Remember, my guests and I aren't giving you professional advice. The information we're sharing is for educational and entertainment purposes only. If you need help be sure to seek out a trained professional whether it's a financial advisor, tax professional, legal expert, or healthcare provider. That being said, listen in as ReeJade and I discuss: How you may actually be running a fraudulent business and how to make it legit Why you need to pay Uncle Sam first and not you The legal concept of liability and how to protect yourself and your assets The importance of having an attorney review anything you sign before you sign it How business relationships are like a marriage How to hire an attorney for your business. The basics of intellectual property and what should be protected And why it's not always worth it to use images from a stock image site whether you pay for them or not As always, listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Rose Andreesen is a professional tour guide in New Orleans, specializing in ghost, vampire, and mystery-themed walking tours of the historic French Quarter through HauntedHistoryTours.com. A lifelong storyteller, her passion for the strange and macabre began at a young age and she's been reading about vampires, ghosts, and other creatures of the night for more than 30 years. Rose has an academic background in Anthropology and Theater Arts and finds her work as both a tour guide and podcaster the perfect marriage of her specializations. This gives a unique, immersive perspective to the tales she weaves for spellbound tourists from around the world. It's easy to imagine she's been telling these stories for centuries. Rose moved to New Orleans one year after Hurricane Katrina hit the area and only plans to leave “when her bloated corpse floats out.” She lives in a haunted house with her husband, a pair of black and orange Halloween cats, and a decidedly non-goth corgi mix. Listen in as Rose shares: How her passion showed itself at an early age and why she was drawn to New Orleans How seeming disparate work experiences fit together to give her the key skills to become a top tour guide and story teller The stage secret that she believes is important for anyone who wants to gain and hold the attention of an audience The only time you should apologize to an audience When she knew she was “ready” to be a tour guide and how she was able to decide to transition from part time side gig to full time professional The hardest part of being a tour guide which is also one of the hardest things about being an entrepreneur What you must ask yourself and know about yourself before you dive in to trying to make a passion a financially successful endeavor And as always, listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. SHOW NOTES As Introverts one of the things we have to check in with ourselves about is whether the issue we're wrestling with or that seems to be keeping us from taking action is truly part of being an introvert or is it connected to a deeper issue we wrestle with. And often, if you find yourself resisting something, avoiding taking action, there's probably a fear that's holding you back. I can tell you from experience that until you fully face that fear it's unlikely you'll be able to fully move forward with the courage, confidence, and clarity you need. That's the conclusion I came to and I thought you probably needed to as well. That's why I wanted to have today's guest on the show. To say Suzie Gruber is a personal development coach is a simplification of her skills I think but that's technically her title. She uses her skills and training to help professionals uncover any survival strategies that we carry from childhood that we may still be unknowingly using today. She'll support you in developing the ability to detach from the emotions connected to an issue, and support you to examine it as you develop new strategies to deal with it. Her clients go on to be more productive, achieve their business and professional goals, and do it all with a greater sense of aliveness and ease so their work and their life is more satisfying. Keep in mind that we're not giving you medical advice. Suzie is not a licensed therapist or a doctor of any sort and neither am I. This episode like all of the episodes of The Courageous Entrepreneur Show is designed to inform, educate, and entertain you. If this brings up any issues or feelings for you please consider reaching out to a professional for diagnosis, care, and treatment. Listening to this show is not a replacement for the care of a trained and licensed professional. SHOW NOTES If you're on your second or third career act and are growing your own business, one of the big things you may be wrestling with is fearlessly communicating your Point of View and trusting that by doing so you'll attract the right clients, the right opportunities, and the right referral partners. We've spent decades of our lives trying to fit in – in classrooms as children and young people; in offices, companies, and organizations where we worked and where our economic lives were technically in the hands of our employers; and in our family of origin and social circles. Then here we are out on our own and what's needed is often the opposite – we need to stand out as unique. While in corporate life we may have lead departments, divisions, and whole businesses, we took action with a certain amount of comfort in knowing that we could successfully address whatever came up and we understood the parameters within which we could lead. Even if others inside the organization considered us fearless for those times when we stood up for a conviction. It's not quite the same as standing up for what we believe, putting our point of view out there and putting ourselves on the line the way that's necessary when you're self-employed and you're the face of your brand. This issue of leading, being seen as a leader, and standing out can be downright scary for some of us. It's a very big part of why I named this show The Courageous Entrepreneur. I wanted to recognize the challenges, be inspired by and celebrate those who are courageous, and learn from experts who can help us do that. And that sums up why I wanted today's guest on the show. Nukhet Hendricks is a Women's Leadership Coach and Consultant as well as the executive director of a nonprofit headquartered in North Dakota. She grew the nonprofit animal shelter from a low 6-figure to a solid 7-figure budget. Nukhet continues to grow the organization while mentoring the emerging women leaders whom she has the privilege to guide. She holds a Master of Science degree in Public and Human Service Administration and has been a nonprofit executive for over 28 years in various leadership roles. Nukhet is originally from Turkey and has called the USA home since 1987 when she became a naturalized citizen. A fiercely independent spiritual rebel and ocean lover with an unquenchable gypsy soul, Nukhet is always moving towards new frontiers! A word of caution about this episode if you're listening to it on speakers where others can here. There are a couple of instances of profanity in this episode. Particularly around our fears of being called the word that's another name for a female dog. So be sure to either where a headset when you listen or keep the volume low so you don't expose other ears to language you might not want them to hear or they may not want to hear. It doesn't come up a lot but definitely at least once early in the conversation. Listen in as Nukhet and I discuss: Her definition of leadership and why it's important for women to answer the call to lead The important role of resilience in emotional health and how we can develop that How to develop and maintain strong boundaries Her explanation of authenticity and how to handle the challenges of being authentic The fears associated with being a female leader and conditioning we experienced in organizational life Nukhet also shares her thoughts on the 8 strategic actions entrepreneurs regularly have to take to grow a business and create the life they dream of. Those of us in service professions like coaching, consulting, healing, or other professional problem solvers start our businesses because we: Have been given talents that we love to use and want to use all the time Feel called to do the work we do Are on a mission to bring about some change in the world Have likely figured out a solution to a problem and we want to share that solution with the world But then we realize we have to figure out how to get clients so we can do that thing we love and do so well. And it's in that moment that we often come face to face with emotional baggage we never knew we had or baggage we thought we had tucked away in that closet in our mind. But until we deal with this issue and recognize selling is just helping people make a choice that's best for them, we're left to struggle. Struggling to make sales means we aren't generating the income we want and need to survive or thrive. We're not helping ourselves, our families, or the causes we care about. We're stressed. We're fearful. We can get depressed. You get the picture. So we've got to not just figure out the whole sales process. We've got to get comfortable with it and actually embrace it as part of serving others. That's right. It's part of serving others. Show Notes Building a financially abundant coaching, consulting, or other practice centered around our core expertise is a dream for all of us. But how do you do that? How do you make a big impact and a big income where you're paid top dollar, working with fantastic clients who are committed to doing the work and playing full out? That's a pretty big topic with lots of layers to it. And it's why I'm always fascinated to talk about it with women who have done it and who continue to push themselves to maximize their revenue and the joy in their lives. Today's episode is with top executive coach Charmaine McLarie. Charmaine has been running a thriving practice for decades and built it strictly through word of mouth. She makes no secret of the fact that some people will think she's expensive but like the commercial says Charmaine has no problem saying “I'm worth it”. In addition to being an executive coach, Charmaine is a keynote speaker and leadership expert. She works with clients to have their best year ever and 98% of her clients get promoted within 18 months. SHOW NOTES Experts tell us the key to success is to find a problem and solve it. Many of the most successful entrepreneurs had a problem themselves, recognized there was nothing out there to solve it and like that little red hen from the children's story decided to do it themselves. Today's episode is a great example of that. It's also an example of how the best solutions are often the simplest. In this episode, criminal defense attorney Judith Samson shares how she created a product that solves a problem she had herself and ended up building a successful side business. Listen in as Judith explains: * How she came up with the idea for the bra bridge * The process of getting a sample product made * Why she had to get the product made in China * Things to watch out for to protect your ideas and intellectual property * And some hidden benefits of raising boys while building a business focused on women's breasts As always, listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode Resources Guest Contact Information Get your Bra Brdges direct at Judith's Bra Bridge website Judith and Bra Bridge on social media Facebook YouTube Twitter Instagram Related Episodes Bernadette Giorgi -- Getting a Product on QVC Ready to Make Your Next Big Leap? Show Notes Retirement has been completely re-invented and reconsidered as people at 40+ pivot and shift from one career to another. People continue working for a combination of reasons including they love the work they do or they have different interests at different points in their lives and want to continue to contribute to the world. Some of course work because they have to and would like to open themselves up to new opportunities to learn and contribute whether that's in a job with another company or as an independent professional or business owner. From professionals starting a side hustle for extra money or with the intention to transition to self-employment, starting a business has always been seen as an insurance policy of sorts. An opportunity to control our own destiny. And while that's true, it's certainly not as easy as the mainstream media likes to make it out to be. In this episode of the show, JT Ippolito, author of Encore Entrepreneurs, talks about the need for reinvention and flexibility in your career. He also shares tips to help you overcome your fear of sales. JT spent decades with IBM rising through the ranks to become an executive. He's owned several companies and is the CEO of Sync Media Network and Media Marketing Management. His finger is on the pulse of the latest in media marketing and technology needed to reach your audience and build your expert brand. Listen in as JT explains: What your business pedigree is What's meant by career reinvention and why it's a particularly important concept for Baby Boomers How to know if starting a business is for you or not His key strategies for reinvention the best strategies to establish yourself as an expert tips to build your expert brand how to overcome fears around sales and selling. We all talk about wanting to get new clients and wanting to get more clients. But what if we didn't have to? What if you actually had clients who stayed with you longer, felt so cherished by you, that they were more likely to recommend you to others? SHOW NOTES There's a study that says a 5% increase in client retention can lead to an increase in profits of between 25 and 95%. Wow. Of course you've got to deliver a great service. You've got to produce a transformation that gets clients excited. But it also speaks to the relationship you have with clients and how you can help them see and feel how much you genuinely care for them. That's what this episode is all about. SHOW NOTES I'm sure you believe you're optimistic and have an abundance-focused mindset. You may say affirmations, think positive thoughts, and take responsibility for your thoughts, beliefs, and outcomes. The standard formula for abundance is Ask, Believe, Receive. You may "Ask", and you certainly say you Believe. So why aren't you receiving? Have you ever deflected a compliment? You know someone says "that shirt looks nice on you" and you say “oh this old thing?” Have you ever gotten a compliment about your work and said “Oh it was nothing. Anyone could have done it.” Then you want to listen closely and maybe even take some notes because you may very well be putting up blocks to receiving what you want. You may be what Nat Couropmitree calls a Conditional Receiver. I know I'm one. Nat guides visionary leaders to live their lives in a match with the energetic frequency of their truest selves. Tapping into this powerful source of love, respect, and value frees them from the exhausting cycle of working harder to gain something that can never be achieved through more effort, more work, more sacrifice, and instead creates space for them to experience the ease, joy, and adventure in the present moment. Nat is also the host of the Bold Magnificence podcast where his guests share stories about having the courage to live in alignment with what lights them up. And what lights Nat up is experimenting with exotic cuisine, finding adventure in far-flung places, and dancing the Argentine tango with his beloved wife Olga. Listen in as Nat explains: How we cut off the abundance we dream of and deserve The different types of conditional receivers so you can recognize which one you are Strategies to begin to break free from the conditioning you've experienced in your life without blaming or shaming yourself or others The ultimate need and goal we all share as humans The one thing we're all told to do as service-providers that actually sets us up for struggle and even resentment How conditional receiving impacts the strategic actions we must take in growing our businesses And the single practice where everything begins As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your action step and cocktail exercise for this episode. You'll discover how to position and pre-sell yourself as the unique solution provider you are, and ultimately to profit from your expertise while you build a business in alignment with your faith, beliefs, and values. SHOW NOTES One of the things we know to be true is that we all want to work with experts. When we've got a problem no one sits around wondering who is an average solution provider I can get to solve my problem on the cheap. Our first thought is I have a problem and need an expert to solve it. We'll figure out how to pay for it later. Our own target audience feels the same way. And in today's crowded online market place and even in the noisy offline world consumers – whether in the business to business segment or in the direct to consumer or B2C space people are looking for the right expert. As much as it may be difficult to put ourselves out there, to take a clear stand, to communicate our point of view. But we MUST do it. Your audience is best served by YOU. Not someone else. Building your brand as a thought leader is an important part of that process. To discuss this idea, I've invited Samantha Riley on the show. She's a speaker, international business growth coach, best-selling author, host of the ‘Thought Leaders Business Lab' podcast, co-founder of the Global Thought Leaders Network and has 25 years personal experience in building and growing businesses. Today, she helps thought leaders and experts to scale their business so they have more income, more freedom, and more impact. Listen in as she shares: What a thought leader is and is not 3 must haves to help you step into greatness The challenges faced by those of us who leave corporate life The problem of comparisonitis and how to deal with and overcome it A fun idea for making sure your statement of what you do is clear and simple 3 keys to being seen as a thought leader How thought leadership helps you get clients And Samantha's best tips for managing the 8 strategic actions we need to take to grow our expertise based business. SHOW NOTES I started feeling the pull to go out on my own when I started to become unhappy with the types of sacrifices I was making for my employer – working 7 days a week; what I believed was too much travel, and way too much stress. But I ended up leaving way before I was ready. I had no idea what I was going to do or how to get clients let alone how much to charge. I ended up getting frustrated and having to get a job within a few months. The second time I went out on my own I was forced out by injuries I sustained in a car accident. And I struggled for years trying to manage my recovery and get my business established. I wish I had gotten the kind of information and had the sort of insight that today's guest had and has. Ed Gandia worked in corporate sales for more than 8 years when he didn't like the direction his career was going either. He was facing the same thing I was – a lot of travel – and he knew that if he kept going all in on his career he would be living out of a suitcase. So he created a plan to escape by building a business on the side. Ed went from replacing his six figure corporate job to being a well-paid freelance copywriter. He now coaches and mentors other writers to launch, build, and grow their businesses. No matter where you are on your entrepreneurial journey, Ed has some great tips and strategies that can help you get more clients and realize you're capable of more than you think you are. Listen in as he shares: The plan he laid out and what he called triggers that he needed to hit before he would feel confident enough to quit How long it actually took him to leave compared to the plan he made – I think it will surprise you The 4 things that helped him get his business off the ground When he came clean to his boss about his moonlighting How he managed his time to fit his full time job, growing family, and side business into his schedule His secret to manage looking for new clients with getting his existing client work done and keeping his day job How he decided what to charge when he started out And what he knows now that he wished he knew when he started. Show Notes As we grow, form our self-identity, and dream of a future full of work we love that uses our great gifts and strengths most of us come face to face with ways that society – including peers, institutions, and groups, including our family of origin – tell us we can't or we shouldn't or aren't able to have those dreams because of who or what we are. That's especially true for girls and young women. Changes are being made of course, but restrictions still exist. And sometimes our own thoughts and beliefs feed into those restrictions. Often we spend the first portion of our lives living up to others expectations and then something happens that helps us to break free and decide to create a life that's consistent with our own beliefs and expectations. Today's guest is a great example of all of that. Jodi Harrison Lee is a Martial Arts Master, co-owner of the martial arts studio, The Martial Way in LA county California. She's also a best selling author, speaker and trainer whose core mission is helping girls and women to find an embrace their strength, exude the confidence they have deep inside, and be able to defend themselves in any situation they're in. So Listen in as Jodi and I discuss: How young girls lose their confidence and how they can regain it How we often allow the opinions of others and beliefs of society to pigeon hole us and keep us trapped in a place we weren't meant to be The how sports and athletics lead to increased confidence and courage for children and adults. Show Notes As of recent data from Hubspot 81% of businesses use video as a marketing tool – up from 63% in 2017. 65% of people who don't use video say they plan to start using it in 2018. We also watch a lot of video with the majority of people consuming about 90 minutes of video during a typical work day but the extreme is there are people who watch as much as 3 hours of video in a typical day. Marketers report to Hubspot that video drives key metrics like increasing sales, increased site traffic, and increased the time spent on a site. And of course as the consumer, you probably love video when it's done right and giving you the information you need and want. But as the marketer…especially if you're an introvert or you're self-conscious or have some sort of self-doubt or limiting beliefs I know the thought of doing video can practically give you hives. Show Notes From the moment we're born we start learning. We discover that crying brings relief of our suffering and gets our needs met. We absorb the sights, sounds, and lessons all around us. As we grow, form our self-identity, and begin to dream of a future full of work we love that uses our great gifts and strengths we continue to absorb messages that others communicate to us intentionally and unintentionally. When we join the working world we become part of organizations that have varying degrees of emotional health and it's not always good. While we develop the foundation of our professional future and hone our skills and craft we get exposed to the beliefs, values, and behavior patterns of others…what in HR terms is referred to as the organization's culture. Without realizing it, our beliefs and behaviors are influenced by our organizational life and while the patterns we developed contributed to our success inside the organizations we worked for, out on our own, those patterns – of thinking and acting – can become disempowering…holding us back from achieving the very success we dream of and deserve. That's what today's episode is all about. This is an unusual episode for me and for the show. This is an interview-based program as I said in the introduction. But the past several weeks have been tough for me and for my guests. I've had a rash of guests who needed to reschedule for health and personal reasons. This has been a tough flu season and I had a terrible injury to my leg that made it nearly impossible for me to sit up for extended periods of time. So I found myself without a completed show for this week but I hated the thought of not making good on my commitment of delivering useful information and I know the importance of consistency so I decided to come out of my comfort zone a bit and do a solo episode for you. The information I'm going to share hit me like a ton of bricks a few years ago when I had what I can only classify as a nervous breakdown. I was still in active recovery from my brain injury. TBI's have a long recovery period and had reached a point of tremendous frustration as I was trying to build my solo consulting practice. I realized that the strategies that had helped me survive an abusive childhood were in fact now actively holding me back. Things like perfectionism, conflict avoidance, and others. The more I thought about those patterns the more I realized that they were the same patterns that contributed to my success as a corporate professional. I've been fascinated by behavior and personality my whole life and have studied it in school, at work, and in life. I have almost as many degrees as a thermometer – an associates in personnel administration, a bachelor's degree in education with a teaching credential in general business…a master's degree in Human Resources and 15 years as a certified senior professional in HR. I've also done post graduate level course work in counseling and psychology and have a bunch of additional certificates. And I've got a PhD from the school of hard knocks with a major in self-sabotage. One other element that makes me a bit quirkily unique is that brain injury. In addition to having to relearn how to learn (even to the point of having to relearn how to tie my shows) I experienced a big personality shift. Prior to the accident I had been what I would consider a solid ambivert who leaned towards extroversion. But after the accident I became a true introvert. I had to rediscover who I was and had to develop new ways of dealing with the world so I could be true to this new version of myself, continue to use my biggest gifts, and build the independent business I dreamed of. So listen in as I share: 3 ways organizational life conditions us for struggle Why smart corporate escapees struggle to recreate the success they enjoyed as employees The reasons we move toward changes we want but can back slide or even give up And the elements I call the 6 pillars of courageous success As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Which you can do by getting the worksheet for this week's episode at WinnieAnderson.com/bomb I get suggestions about people to interview on a fairly regular basis and I often find that the person just isn't a fit. So when a PR rep reached out to me and suggested today's guests for the show I was skeptical. But I'm so glad I met these young ladies. Isabelle and Caroline Bercaw are the sisterpreneurs behind DaBomb bath fizzers. The two young inventors got their start in 2012 when they were 10 and 11 respectively. They liked using bath bombs but weren't crazy about how the bombs sometimes left their skin or the tub feel so they created their own. They started giving them as gifts and discovered the bombs were so popular they started selling them. The rest as they say is history. Today they're the faces of a multi-million dollar family business that employs their parents and about 150 people in their community. The girls are actively involved in marketing and running the company and in this interview we discuss the challenges of running a growing company while you're not old enough to sign a contract. Trust me, these girls have big lessons for all of us and the episode is full of insightful nuggets these teens share. So listen in as we discuss: How they grew their business from idea to initial investment to million dollars in revenue Their approach to differentiating their product – this surprised me and it might surprise you The challenges of running a family business and how they manage to get some down time The power of and importance of branding especially in a crowded market And what surprised them about running a business that might seem like a negative but they ended up seeing as a positive. Show Notes I have a confession to make. I hate traditional networking. You know, those rubber chicken luncheons and dinners where everyone you talk to seems to expect you to buy from them before dessert's served? I'm much more comfortable doing my networking online. But even then I've had people tell me they wanted to have a get-to-know you chat only to find out they wanted to pitch me their service. But let's face it, we know that theoretically networking is the way to get work whether that's a paying job, a consulting contract, or other work. And for an introvert, the idea of doing something that allows us to cultivate relationships that lead to business is just what we want. But it doesn't seem to work that way does it? I was thinking about this very topic one day when I was on LinkedIn and an article about the problems with networking caught my eye. I read the thread of comments and one in particular stood out. It was an honest assessment of the problems with effective networking. The commenter mentioned her book in her response and that led me to reach out and ask her if she'd come on the show to discuss her insights with us. I was thrilled when she said yes because this information is so important. Patti DeNucci is a conference and corporate speaker and workshop facilitator as well as the author of the award-winning book The Intentional Networker: Attracting Powerful Relationships, Referrals, and Results in Business. She grew up in an entrepreneurial family in northern Minnesota and upon moving to Texas, enjoyed a career in marketing communications before launching her own consulting practice in 1989. Patti has served in leadership positions and earned numerous awards in both the Association of Women in Communications and the National Speakers Association. She founded what is known as Freelance Austin, a networking and professional development group devoted to helping solopreneurs thrive. Something fun about Patti - she enjoys making jewelry. “Live, work, and connect at a higher level” is her mantra and it's what she strives to inspire others to do. So listen in as Patti shares: What's wrong and right about traditional networking Why it's critical to make the right choice of networking groups and her own rating system for evaluating their effectiveness The power and importance of intentions as they relate to networking Some tips for becoming a little more comfortable at an event where you don't know anyone What to consider when deciding to turn down a meeting request from a contact The simple thing 98% of networkers don't do and how it can instantly differentiate you And the single most important thing to learn before you start networking. This answer might surprise you. As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. It's no secret that social media has taken the world by storm and changed the way we communicate and the way we market our services. But lots of solo professionals I talk to haven't seen the sort of return on investment they dreamed of when they first embraced using social media and participating in social networking sites. Others have had decent results but are ready for more. And to be honest, it's taken me a long time to begin to reap the benefits. So I knew the time was right to have a conversation about this with an expert. We're going to focus on some big picture concepts and at the end I'll share some application ideas with you. My guest today is Leslie Horn Trosset. Since approximately 2000, Leslie has worked to master the art of cutting through the noise and marketing hype to help make millions of dollars for her clients. She takes clients through her powerful and emotional process of discovering where they are now, where they want to be, and uncovering what's getting in the way of realizing their dreams. The result is a customized marketing strategy that combines content marketing, SEO, and social media strategy that you can implement quickly and begin making more money. So listen in as Leslie explains: The jargon of social media and social networking How to show up as yourself in social media and what exactly that means Finding a balance in what you share versus over-sharing What to do when you've been using a platform for personal stuff and you want to start using it for business How to choose the right platforms to be on Common mistakes she sees people making Why you want to share your opinions and perspective in what you post And what she knows now that she wished she new when first starting her business. Show Notes This episode falls in the category I consider an entrepreneur's journey. I think there's a lot to learn from the path that others have traveled, mistakes they've made, and what they'd do differently now that they've achieved success. I particularly love to interview people who were experts in their profession for their employer who had to figure out how to position themselves as an expert and then not just build but run a thriving successful business. Today's guest fits that description perfectly. Andy Falco Jimenez was forced to retire from the Anaheim Police Department after 21 years with many of those years spent as the top K9 officer with the force. Andy was a recognized leader, sought out by other community police departments to do K9 training and was a nationally recognized speaker on topics related to training and building a K9 unit. But a pair of car accidents while he was on duty led to some scary symptoms for him and showed him how little he actually meant to the organization. Forced to retire, he had to find himself and build a business to fully support his growing family. He candidly shares how he did that. You'll hear the mistakes and most of all what he did to persevere and become someone who now helps others become the recognized expert in their field too. So listen in as Andy shares: What was so hard about leaving the police force The hardest part about building a business based on your skill and expertise The mistakes he made with his pricing and how he fixed them The reason he nearly lost his house in spite of having a business that made good money The important 3-part lesson he learned that changed his life and business Why and how narrowing his focus led to more clients How he built his authority status and you can too As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. I'm on all the big platforms but would love it if I saw more of a payoff of the investment of time and energy I make in social networking. So when my colleague Tracy Enos published her book that promised tips and strategies for using LinkedIn's publishing platform I grabbed it on pre-sale and read it as soon as it got released. You can find my 5-star review for it on Amazon. I genuinely loved it because it was so practical and I wanted to make sure I had her on to share some insight with you. I first met Tracy in about 2014 or 15 when I sat next to her at a big training event and we've stayed connected. She's a marketing consultant who specializes in Linkedin and particularly in how to leverage your profile and the publishing platform to position yourself as an expert, attract and engage with potential clients and referral partners, and generally build your brand. She speaks on the subject at events, seminars, tradeshows; works with sales and marketing teams to help them gain visibility and attract clients and works with independent professionals to attract more leads and clients with LI coaching and Done-for-you services. SHOW NOTES We solo professionals and micro firm owners where a zillion hats. We're trying to juggle multiple important responsibilities including marketing, enrolling clients, servicing clients, product creation, and of course we'd like to have a life in addition to having a business. That's what we went into business FOR wasn't it? One of the issues we all wrestle with is maximizing the value of every minute and maximizing our earning power of every minute of the day and every ounce of work we do. There are only a few ways to make more money: Charge more Serve more Lower expenses Change your billing model Create leverage For me, creating leverage means to build a business that's not just scalable but that also uses products as a way to attract potential clients – which means you're not using up more time in the day to attract that audience -- and use products to sell so you're driving additional revenue from work you've already done. I'm a big fan of the work once, earn revenue multiple ways model. But how do you do that without making yourself more overwhelmed and exhausted? That's what we're going to talk about with today's guest. Paulette Ensign was looking for a new strategy to expand her reach, attract more and better clients, and position herself as an expert. She had no idea that the simple 16-page booklet full of how-to tips called 110 ideas for organizing your business life would sell over a million copies or that it would be reprinted in multiple languages and formats all without spending a penny in advertising. The success she had with the booklet led others to want to know her secrets to convert THEIR knowledge into how-to, tips-based information products. Paulette's business grew as she developed products and services around the seemingly endless possibilities for using content as marketing tools, revenue streams, or both. She's a former elementary school instrumental music teacher, a past president of the National Association of Professional Organizers, and a fellow Jersey Girl although she lives in sunny San Diego. But her online home is at Tips Products.com. So listen in as Paulette shares: What exactly is a tip and how it can be of more value to you and your audience than a traditional book can Ways you can leverage your existing content into tips that generate new clients How you can profit from selling tips you used to give away for free How a tips book or product can differentiate you as a professional Where to find content you can use for your tips products – trust me you won't have to work hard to find it And what she knows now that she wished she new when first starting her business. SHOW NOTES It's likely that when you first went out on your own that you looked for some roadmap to figure out the whole how to be a solo professional thing. Maybe you quickly recognized you weren't having an easy time getting clients. You may have decided to follow the big gurus and started opting in for free webinars, ebooks, and guides all the while getting more and more confused. And you may have started paying attention to people who just flat out told you that what you were doing and what you wanted to build were wrong. If you're a corporate escapee like me you may have suddenly found yourself struggling to stand out, discounting your corporate successes, and feeling very confused and inadequate. Me too. And ditto for today's guest. Emma Churchman spent the first 17 years of self-employment making no more than 500$ a month. She tried everything to turn her business around but it wasn't until she faced some hard truths about herself that she was able to quickly turn things around and go from earning an amount that put her below the poverty level to earning multiple six figures in just about a year. Emma believes the more spiritually conscious you are the more successful you'll be. She is a business coach for conscious entrepreneurs who are ready to get help managing their mindset, money, and emotions. She believes that success in business is 10% execution and logistics and 90% managing ourselves – our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, choices, and ability or inability to take action. She teaches mindset success and how to take aligned action as part of her coaching practice. So listen in as we discuss: What exactly does it mean to be conscious The problem with following someone else's formula for business What it means to be authentic and why it's so important in the process of creating abundance The 3 things that keep you from making sales Why you have to face past trauma in order to run a successful business As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Show Notes As we go through our lives we come face to face with loss and disappointments – friends come and go; loved ones move to the next plane of existence; we have our heart broken; we don't get the job, promotion, or achieve the other milestones we believe we should have, and other emotional wounds. These emotional hits are the traumas of daily life and they leave their marks on us. We try to move forward and deal with them in the way we've been taught and enculturated to believe is the right way to deal with them. Many of us have been taught that we must be tough and deal with these issues and the grief they bring on our own. We may even have been led to believe that grieving is somehow wrong. But grief is part of the normal processing of emotions. And it's human to need help to navigate the accumulated emotional traumas and process the grief we feel to move through the process effectively. As we build our independent business as a coach, consultant, freelancer, or microfirm owner unresolved grief can lead to difficulties in moving forward. That's what today's episode is all about. My guest, Martina Meyer, is a life and relationship coach who considers herself as a personal trainer for your mind, heart, and soul. She helps others live a wholehearted, wholesome life full of joy and passion by navigating life transitions and healing unresolved grief. Whether you're mourning the loss of a relationship, a job, or some other life change, Martina helps you move through the incredibly human experience of grieving. So listen in as she demystifies grief and grieving by revealing: The myths associated with grieving How following what we've been taught as children and through our conditioning keeps us from effectively grieving The real secret to being strong The connection between job loss and grief How isolation only makes grief worse The difference between guilt and shame And How guilt and shame are involved in the grieving process As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Show Notes Growing a business can be scary. We know we need to put ourselves out there…we need to market ourselves in such a way that we get attention, inspire people to want to learn more, and ultimately to say yes to working with us. For those of us who are corporate escapees, we grew up as professionals in an environment that was a constant struggle between standing out and not really wanting to stand out. There was the good part of standing out: being recognized as a leader, getting a promotion, getting an increase. But there's also a lot of negatives connected with standing out in corporate life: being ridiculed, being punished. And heaven help you if you made a mistake at work. I'm sure you know people who took a risk and who made a mistake, who were disciplined, or even fired. It's bad enough to take a risk, make a mistake, even fail at something and have your coworkers and peers know it. It could destroy your reputation and your career. Is it any wonder we become fearful of taking chances when we're out on our own? Well imagine if you took a big risk - something you were excited about trying - and you failed. And what if people laughed at you? Horrible, right? Now imagine it was shown on national TV. And ended up on the Internet. How humiliating. What would you do? Would you crawl under your bed and pray the Internet would go down? Maybe someone would take pity on you and pull the recording offline? Well that's what happened to today's guest. William Hung went from being an unknown civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkley to becoming an overnight sensation because of his failed audition on American Idol. He's now a funny, inspirational speaker who shares his message of taking risks and embracing failure with students, association members, and entrepreneurs. And he coaches entrepreneurs who want to leverage speaking to embrace their mistakes, speak from the heart, and make the impact – and achieve the success – they were born to have. Listen in as William shares: How he ended up auditioning for American Idol How what looks like your biggest failure at the time could actually be your path to success His key point of view that helped him survive the pain of rejection and embrace the opportunities it brought Where he believes optimism comes from And the big secret he revealed on Jimmy Kimmel As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Show Notes As we build our businesses, we quickly come to the realization that we just can't do everything ourselves if we truly want to build a business and not just a glorified job. I know well how scary it is to make a hiring decision. I spent the first third of my career in human resources specializing in recruitment and staff development. There's no more important decision you'll make than who to bring on board and that's especially true when you're an entrepreneur. But how do you do it? How do you find, choose, and work with someone effectively? To answer that I thought I'd go to the horse's mouth so to speak and talk directly to a virtual assistant. Beatrice Ten Thye (pronounced "TenTie") is a virtual assistant who I originally connected with in a Facebook group. She recently wrote a post on Facebook that I'd describe as a rant. It talked about the big mistake entrepreneurs make by not using a VA. Beatrice has an extensive background in corporate and organizational life where she built her skills in administration, organization, project management, and problem solving. Listen in as Beatrice and I discuss: Why entrepreneurs find it so difficult and actually fear working with a VA Why she doesn't recommend that you just dive into asking questions when interviewing a VA When you should start thinking about getting a VA – it's likely to surprise you Mistakes made when hiring and managing a VA What to consider when you know you need help but can't seem to find the right person As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Often we discover issues we never realized we had or issues we thought we dealt with come roaring back to life. That can especially be true about money. And it's especially true for women. I've wrestled with my own issues around money including pricing my services appropriately, making good money decisions as a business owner, and understanding the financial elements of running and growing a business. I had a past guest on to discuss this. Justin Krane talked about pricing your services and we talked a bit about mindset but I wanted to take the topic deeper since I know how important it is. That's where the idea came from to have today's guest on the show. Robyn Crane is a money and business growth expert on a mission to empower committed and passionate women business owners to make more money and help more people, so they can have a bigger impact on the world. Show Notes This is one of those episodes where the subject matter is divided between my guest's journey to launch and build a successful business with something powerful they achieved at the same time. In this case, it's landing a TEDx Talk. If you're an entrepreneur you want to maximize every minute of every day and that means multi-tasking when we can. Including our meal times. I read morning prayer as I eat breakfast and I watch videos while I eat lunch. They range from faith-centered messages by Melvin Pillay, success-centered messages from Jack Canfield, how-to messages from Pam Hendrickson, MOZ, and others to the many fascinating messages from TED talks. Maybe somewhere in the back of your mind you've thought you'd love to deliver one. You have a big message that the world needs to hear. And you love the idea of having your message go viral like Brene Brown's or Mel Robbins or any of the other top TED presenters. But how do you do that? Well one way is to start with a TEDx talk. TED talks of course are those powerful presentations that are 18 minutes or less that educate, inform, and inspire. TEDx talks are local conferences that are formatted similarly to the big TED conference. So how do you get to present at one? Well that's part of what today's guest is going to share with us. Robert James Collier is the founder of Entrepreneur's Dinner. These are exclusive networking experiences built around the idea that breaking bread with someone is a powerful relationship building experience like few other things. Rob has built his business entirely by word of mouth often spread by social media. He's going to talk a little about his business and how he developed the idea but he's also going to talk about his experience applying for, being selected to deliver, and then presenting a TED talk at TEDx Buffalo. Listen in as Robert explains: The common need we've experienced that inspired him to host his first dinner and what led him to believe this could become a business. What makes your average networking dinner so bad and the key element that can elevate it to something powerful The concept of Psychological Intimacy and how it helps us build strong teams, strong networks, and can lead to strong client relationships as well. One of the issues we solo professionals can wrestle with is embracing and leveraging who we really are in order to move forward and achieve our goals. Maybe we get easily distracted from a project or goal because we have so many ideas swimming in our heads or we may lack confidence in our work, in our plans, or even in ourselves. We may be naturally gifted in one area while we feel lacking in another and so spend all our time doing the thing we love and are good at. But the thing we're lacking in and avoiding may be the very thing that can move our business forward. This can be especially true for those of us who fall somewhere on the spectrum of being a creative entrepreneur. Which is why I wanted today's guest to be on the show. Lisa Robbin Young is THE coach for creative entrepreneurs who are ready for help growing their business while getting their message out in the world. One of the toughest parts of being self employed is actually getting clients, right? Whether we go to mixers, conferences, lunches, dinners, or use video to market ourselves and our services, we're putting ourselves out there and can feel really exposed when we're doing all that. And of course that's because are to a large degree. That's how humans operate.. we look, listen, and react. This fact can make us so nervous it can actively hold us back. Or we can embrace it. Develop our voice and point of view, leverage that, and attract the clients that resonate with our message so we're attracting people who will get the most out of working with us and who we would most enjoy working with. That's all easier said than done sometimes. That's why I wanted to have Valerie Sokolosky on the show. Valerie is a former broadcaster, voice over artist, and professional speaker who moved into a career in corporate training and executive coaching. She's been running her successful Dallas, TX based firm Valerie and Company for more than 30 years. Valerie is the author of 8 leadership books and was featured in The Wall Street Journal for having one of the nation's first executive coaching practices. As an ICF accredited coach she inspires leaders to develop a strong personal brand that differentiates them in the marketplace and creates greater success for themselves and their organizations. I've talked before about how we corporate escapees start our service-based businesses as consultants, coaches, or healers because we: Have skills and talents we love to use that we want to share with the world Figured out the solution to a problem and want to share that solution with others who need it Feel called to a mission and want to dedicate our lives to making a difference So we're out on our own and we suddenly come face to face with our own crap. We discover we hate selling and aren't too crazy about marketing either. We struggle to talk about ourselves and the value we bring to others. And we can really struggle with money issues. We undercharge. We don't stay focused on the numbers and key performance indicators for running a profitable business. I say “we” because this has certainly been true for me. But it doesn't have to be this way. It's time to embrace our power…and that starts with understanding everything involved with pricing for profitability. My guest today is Justin Krane. He's a certified financial planner and money strategist for entrepreneurs. Justin is known for his savvy, holistic approach to financial planning and he advises his clients on how to unite their money with their lives and businesses. And he does it using a unique system developed from his studies of financial psychology. He educates and supports his clients in a non-judgemental way while helping them understand the financial side of running their businesses and making a profit. Listen in as Justin explains: Why it's critical to price for value and to create a premium pricing strategy The impact that self-confidence and self-worth have on our pricing strategy Why we've got to get to 6-figures as fast as possible Common mistakes made with pricing our offerings that limit our profitability and can create stress And ROL versus ROI As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Show Notes Solo professionals often start a business because we've had some life changing experience, we've had a revelation, or we've overcome a challenge and we want to or feel called to help others who are where we used to be. But how do you do that? We often just dive in and are forced to figure it out as we go. I'm hoping to shorten the learning curve for you and all of us who dream of helping others. So this episode is one in what I think of as an informal series where I may talk to an entrepreneur about their particular specialty but also about how they built their business. You're going to meet Ellie Savoy who is a bestselling author and health coach. She is going to share her thoughts on the importance of maintaining good health for us entrepreneurs but we're also going to talk a little about how she got started and things she did that gave her business a boost. At the end of this episode I'm going to share some additional thoughts about how you can make your mess your message. So listen in as Ellie shares: The health problem that caused her to face the need to make changes around her own health The importance of good health for every entrepreneur Things Ellie did to get her business to be successful and what she'd do differently today Things to be cautious about as you work to build a business a service focused business And as always, listen all the way to the end where I'll share some of my own insight, tips, and things I know now that I wish I'd known then. Show Notes One of the things many solo professionals deal with is low self worth and self-esteem and often we suffer without fully realizing it. We're pretty confident and we may have even been courageous at times in our former corporate or organizational lives. But out on our own where we can feel exposed and we may struggle with issues like imposter syndrome and what my friend Sandi Massori calls “who-am-I-itis” this can prove debilitating, disempowering, and ultimately can keep us from the success we dream of and deserve. I've had clients who were held back by this, as well as colleagues, and friends. I knew this was going to be an ongoing issue for me to address on the show because I think dealing with this takes courage and once you HAVE dealt with it you'll find yourself bravely taking the steps you need to take to position and presell yourself so you can profit from your expertise. And that's why I'm excited to bring you today's guest. Nat Couropmitree (pronounced ca ROPE my THREE) is a coach who helps entrepreneurs, artists, consultants, and coaches to stand up for their uniqueness, align their soul and work to bring them freedom, joy, and fulfillment. Listen in as Nat explains: What exactly is bold magnificence and why it's the essence of who we are How to overcome feelings of self-loathing and unworthiness How to embrace our magnificence without going over to the dark side and becoming a jerk Dealing with the inner critic who seems determined to keep you feeling and playing small What it means to live a vision of magnificence As always listen all the way end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode.
