Public speaking isn't really that public. The moment you're actually nervous about isn't a keynote — it's the next meeting, the Zoom call, the five minutes where you have to make your point before someone jumps in. And almost nobody is coaching you for that.In this solo episode, Kim breaks down the exact framework she teaches executives and teams — including Fortune-level companies — to communicate with more confidence in the rooms they're already in. Send us Fan MailMost mid-career professionals are not struggling because they lack skill, experience, or dedication. They are struggling because the value they bring is not always clear to the people making decisions about promotions, job offers, and leadership opportunities. In this episode, I'm talking about one subtle language habit that may be keeping you from being recognized at work: always saying “we” when it is time to say “I.”If you are a big-hearted, people-first leader, you may have trained yourself to give credit to the team in every update, performance review, networking conversation, and job interview. That humility can build trust, but it can also make your individual leadership hard to see. There is a difference between bragging and self-advocacy. Bragging makes the story only about you. Self-advocacy helps others understand the value of your leadership, your decisions, your influence, and the measurable results you helped create. At mid-career, doing good work is no longer enough. You need to be able to clearly communicate your impact.I'll walk you through how the “invisibility test” shows up in everyday career conversations, including one-on-ones, performance appraisals, job interviews, and networking conversations. I'll also share a personal story from my earlier podcast and how feedback helped me realize I was hiding behind the group instead of getting clearer about my message and leadership. You'll learn how to honor your team while still owning what happened under your leadership. You'll also hear how to create a stronger unique professional value statement that begins with “I help” so you can clarify your value on LinkedIn, in interviews, and in conversations with decision makers. In a competitive job market where hiring decisions feel slower but disqualification happens faster, your ability to articulate your personal impact matters. Leaders and interviewers need to quickly understand what you do, why it matters, and how your leadership creates results. In This Episode, you'll learn:• Why always saying “we” may be hurting your visibility at mid-career• The difference between bragging and self-advocacy• How to credit your team while still owning your leadership• Why your impact needs to be clear before promotion decisions are made• How the invisibility test shows up in one-on-ones and performance reviews• What my earlier podcast taught me about hiding behind group language• How to use an “I help” statement to clarify your professional value• Why job seekers must communicate measurable results quickly in today's hiring marketWhy This Matters for Your CareerIf you are feeling overlooked, passed over, or undervalued at work, the problem may not be your performance. It may be how you are telling the story of your performance.Mid-career professionals often assume their work will speak for itself. But your leaders, stakeholders, and interviewers are busy. They may not always see the strategy, effort, and leadership behind your results unless you make it clear. This does not mean taking credit away from your team. It means learning how to say:“I led the process.”“I influenced the decision.”“I helped the team move from confusion to clarity.”“I created the structure that helped us achieve the result.”“I helped solve the problem by doing this specific thing.”That kind of language helps others understand your leadership brand and the value you bring.Career Strategy to Try This WeekThis week, look at one career conversation where you usually say “we.” It could be a one-on-one, performance update, LinkedIn profile section, resume bullet, networking introduction, or interview answer.Ask yourself:Where is “we” accurate?Where do I need to say “I”?What result happened because of my leadership? What decision, action, or influence did I personally contribute? How can I communicate that impact with clarity and integrity? Then practice building your unique professional value statement using this structure:“I help [audience or organization] achieve [specific result] by [your leadership strength, skill, or approach].”The clearer you are about your value, the easier it becomes for others to understand why you are ready for the next opportunity.Listen to This Episode If You Are:• A mid-career professional who feels overlooked at work• A manager or leader who struggles to talk about your accomplishments• A job seeker preparing for interviews in a competitive market• A high performer who wants to be seen as promotion-ready• A people-first leader who wants to self-advocate without sounding arrogant• Someone who wants more clarity around your leadership brand and career storyFinal ThoughtYou can be humble and still be clear. You can honor the team and still name your leadership. You can be generous with credit and still make sure decision makers understand your impact. At this stage of your career, self-advocacy is not optional. It is part of how you lead, grow, and position yourself for the opportunities you want next.Listen to the full episode and start paying attention to where “we” is helping your leadership story and where “I” may be required.Support the showIf this episode resonated with you and you want more support in how you SHOW UP for your career and life, there are two ways we can work together.Learn more about my SHOW UP Leadership Lab, my monthly membership program, at https://www.johnneral.com/showupIf you would like to learn more about how I can help you as your leadership and career coach, visit https://www.johnneral.com/workwithme.Get John's free weekly leadership and career newsletter at https://www.johnneral.com/the-mid-career-gps-newsletterOther ways we can connect:Connect with John on LinkedIn here.Get John's books on Amazon here.  Follow John on Instagram @johnneralcoaching. Subscribe to John's YouTube Channel here.  Please leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts here. This podcast is listed in Feedspot's Top 90 Best Executive Career Podcasts.https://podcast.feedspot.com/executive_career_podcasts/

184. How to Take Credit for Your Work Without Bragging

Communicate to Lead

Send us Fan MailSomeone praises your work, and before you've even thought about it, you've handed the credit away. “Oh, it was a team effort.” “I got lucky.” “It was nothing, really.”It feels like the humble thing to do, which is exactly why learning how to take credit for your work without bragging is harder than it sounds. Every time you deflect credit that's genuinely yours, you're quietly teaching the people around you that your best work wasn't really yours, and that habit has a real cost when promotion decisions get made.In this Monday Momentum episode of Communicate to Lead, Kele Belton breaks down how to take credit for your work without bragging. She explains the difference between bragging and stating a fact, why so many women deflect in the first place, and a simple two-part strategy for owning your contribution while still sharing credit with your team. What You Will LearnThe difference between bragging and stating a fact at work, and why the fear of the first makes women avoid the secondWhy deflecting credit quietly erases the track record your advancement is built onHow to take credit for your work in two parts: own your contribution first, then share credit without erasing yourselfWhat to say when someone praises your work, so you accept it with confidence instead of deflecting or downplayingWho This Is ForThis episode is for women leaders, managers, and high-performing professionals who do excellent work but tend to deflect credit and who want to own their contributions with confidence and grace.Your Action StepThe next time someone praises your work, resist the urge to deflect. Offer a simple thank you, followed by one factual sentence about your role. For example: “Thank you. I rebuilt that relationship over the past six months, and I'm glad it paid off.” Then stop talking, and let your contribution stand.Common Questions About Taking Credit at Work1. How do I take credit for my work without sounding arrogant?State your contribution as a fact first, then share credit if you want to. Stating what you did isn't bragging; it's accurate.2. Why do I keep deflecting credit at work? For many women it's an automatic habit, often rooted in a fear of being seen as full of herself or not a team player.3. What should I say when someone praises my work?Say thank you, add one factual sentence about your role, and stop there. Let the contribution stand without downplaying it.AI Prompt (Copy-Paste Ready)Use this prompt to prepare for the next time someone praises your work. Paste it into your preferred AI assistant and answer the questions as they come.I am a [role] in [industry]. When someone praises my work, I tend to deflect the credit or downplay my part. Help me prepare a few ways to receive credit that are accurate and gracious, without bragging.Ask me 3 questions:What is a recent piece of work I was genuinely responsible for? What exactly was my role in it, and what am I tempted to say instead?Who do I most want to understand my actual contribution? Then write:Two or three responses I can use when someone praises my work, each stating my contribution as a fact first, then sharing credit if warranted.Constraints:State the contribution as fact, not inflationNo deflecting language like “it was nothing,” “I got lucky,” or “it was all the team”Keep it warm and gracious, not boastfulAvoid softening language like “just,” “a little,” “kind of,” or “I only”The lines should sound natural and self-assured when read out loudExample (output style)“Thank you. I led the strategy on that project, and I'm proud of how the team brought it to life.”Ready to Go Deeper? If you're ready to stop navigating your leadership growth alone, book a complimentary Leadership Strategy Call with Kele. Why does Paul call the message of the cross "foolishness"? In today's reflection, we explore why the Gospel challenged both Jews and Greeks in the first century—and why it still challenges us today. Rather than trusting in human wisdom, religious achievement, or personal strength, Paul reminds us that Jesus Himself is our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. God doesn't call us because we've got life figured out; He calls us because of His grace. Our greatest witness isn't how impressive we are—it's simply telling others what Jesus has done for us. So today, if you're going to boast, boast in the Lord.Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 26th of May, 2026, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to Deuteronomy 8:17: “…then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.” Then we go to the New Testament, Luke 12:19 (This is a very successful farmer): “And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” 'But what happens after that? The Lord says, ‘Foolish man! This very night your soul will be required of you...”We need to be very careful how we stand, lest we fall. Bragging is a very dangerous thing, and I really want to stress today that the Lord was warning the Children of Israel in the first scripture verse I read to you in Deuteronomy, that all these riches that you had were given to you by Me, not by your own hand, but only by the love of God. Don't forget who gave it to you! We really need to be careful of that one. Never forget to say, if somebody says, “Wow, you have done so well”, - it is only by God's grace.” If we go to James 4:15, instead of bragging, the Bible says we ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that” because we don't know how much time we have left on this earth. So it worries me when I see a young man who has been very successful in sport, commerce, industry, even the ministry, and he starts to take the glory. Never, ever touch God's glory. That is the most dangerous thing you could ever do. We need to let our words be sweet when we talk because one day we might have to eat them! So just say, “God has been kind”. I love to drive around a farm where I see a hard-working successful young farmer and I say, “You have done so well here. Your crops are looking good, your cattle are fat, your sheep are looking great,” and to hear the young man say, “Yes sir, but it is only because of the kindness and the grace of God that I have them.'But when I see a young man who is arrogant, “Oh yes, I am going to work for a couple more years and then I am going to retire, and I am just so pleased with myself.” Be careful, it is only through God's grace.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.

I told myself: I know it was my idea. That is enough. But another part of me was frustrated. Disappointed. And quietly unwilling to admit that the private knowing was not quite enough. If you have ever lived in that same split, talked yourself out of caring about credit, then felt the sting of not getting it anyway, this episode is going to land differently than anything you have heard about visibility.Because this is not about self-promotion. Burnout doesn't just drain your body, it reshapes your theology. When we start believing the kingdom can't move without our constant effort, exhaustion turns into a twisted badge of honor and we quietly accept anxiety, chronic fatigue, and stress as “normal” for ministry. We're coming to you from Tennessee after powerful prayer meetings and a week with leaders and young people who know how to pray. From there, we zoom out to a global burden: restoration. We believe God is restoring His kingdom work and the full operation of five-fold ministry, and that kind of multiplication demands leaders who can finish strong. That's why we speak plainly about a quiet crisis among ministers: many who carry healing for others are living paralyzed by exhaustion themselves. We walk through Scripture that confronts the culture of overwork and heals the inner life. Exodus 15:26 reminds us the Lord is our healer, and we pray for healing in mind, emotions, and body. Exodus 18 shows Moses on the edge of burnout until Jethro calls it out and points him toward delegation and wisdom. Then we get intensely practical about Sabbath rest and sleep: Shabbat means to cease, and it proves trust in God rather than self-reliance. Psalm 127 calls sleep a gift, and we talk about what sleep deprivation does to clarity, emotions, decision making, and long-term ministry longevity. If you're a pastor, leader, volunteer, or simply a believer carrying heavy responsibility, press play and take this as your permission to stop glorifying exhaustion. Today on Black Dragon Biker TV — Texas heat, street justice, policy shifts, and accountability in the set! Lavish T. Williams, Tia Redbone Bunch, Woo 1%er, and Black Dragon dive into the latest developments shaking the 1%er world and biker rights landscape.Seventeen Alleged Homietos Motorcycle Gang Members Indicted on Racketeering and Murder Charges in TexasFederal prosecutors in the Southern District of Texas unsealed a superseding indictment charging 17 alleged members and associates of the Homietos Outlaw Motorcycle Gang with RICO conspiracy, racketeering murder, attempted murder, assault, firearms offenses, and more. The case builds on prior indictments (e.g., 2023 assaults at a banquet hall and deadly I-45 highway shootings killing three rival bikers). Key elements:Homietos accused of using violence to control Houston-area territory.Specific murder/attempted murder counts tied to turf wars and retaliatory hits.Recent arrests of four more members brought the total to 17 under this expanded RICO net.FBI Houston and ATF involvement—classic federal playbook to dismantle club structure via asset forfeiture and long sentences. This is escalating federal pressure on Texas OMCGs (Homietos, Bandidos echoes)—how far will RICO stretch, and what does it mean for clubs navigating rivalries?Biker Confronts Students Over Littering from School BusA viral clip circulating on social media shows a biker (patched, riding gear) pulling over after a school bus and confronting a group of students who allegedly threw trash/litter out the windows. The biker stops traffic, lectures them on respect and responsibility, and gets them to pick up the mess before letting the bus go. No arrests, no violence—just a "street dad" moment that sparked debate:Supporters: Biker enforcing basic manners when adults won't.Critics: Vigilantism, potential intimidation of minors. Is this biker accountability or overstepping? Ties into broader "citizen enforcement" stories in the community.Mamdani Suddenly Halts NYPD Crackdown on Reckless E-Bikes in Bid to Protect Immigrant Delivery WorkersNew York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani (progressive Democrat) announced he is pausing/pushing back on NYPD's aggressive enforcement campaign targeting illegal e-bikes and reckless delivery riders (high-speed, sidewalk riding, no helmets/plates). Rationale: Many affected are immigrant gig workers (DoorDash/Uber Eats) who rely on e-bikes for income and face disproportionate stops/tickets. Mamdani calls for alternatives like regulated charging stations and licensing instead of crackdowns. Critics argue it prioritizes politics over public safety (pedestrian accidents up in NYC). Biker angle: Parallels to motorcycle profiling and over-policing of two-wheel riders.Biker Who Posted Video of Himself Breaking the Law Faces ChargesA biker (identity not fully public yet) posted a video online showing himself committing a traffic violation (likely speeding, wheelie, or reckless riding on public roads). Authorities traced the video, identified him via plates/gear/location, and charged him with reckless endangerment, unlawful exhibition, or similar offenses. Case highlights the double-edged sword of social media: Bragging can lead to self-snitching and easy prosecution. Common in 2026—cops monitor biker TikToks/Instagram for evidence.County Council Boosts Biker Permit Length and CostA county council (specific county not detailed in initial reports, but trending in biker forums) voted to extend motorcycle permit/registration validity (e.g., from 1–2 years to 3–5 years) while raising fees to offset costs. Pros: Less frequent renewals for riders. Cons: Higher upfront cost hits working bikers hard. Ties into ongoing debates on biker fees, DMV burdens, and whether it's revenue grab or administrative efficiency.Join the crew for unfiltered takes: RICO's reach in Texas, vigilante moments, policy wins/losses for riders, and social media pitfalls. There is at least one moment in a job interview you can count on.  Whether it happens literally or figuratively, it's this: "Tell me about your accomplishments." What do many people do when they hear this? They panic. Not because they don't have wins.  But because they don't know how to talk about them without feeling awkward, arrogant, or self-promotional. And that's where offers disappear. Whether you're interviewing for a new role or discussing your impact with your current employer, one thing matters more than anything else:  Can you clearly explain what you've accomplished and why it mattered? If you can't, the interviewer fills in the blanks for you. And they usually get it wrong. That's why today's lesson is focused on how to share your wins without sounding like you're bragging. This lesson will help you talk about your achievements in a way that sounds confident and credible, not self-important. We just wrapped up a quick episode of The Work. We had a bit of a late start because I was finishing up at the accountant's office—dealing with that usual year-end and beginning-of-the-year paperwork.I'm really leaning into the data right now. I'm planning to fly to Vegas the second week of March to be on Dave Feldman's podcast, so I want to have a fully comprehensive lab panel and Dexa scan done before then. I want to see what my markers look like specifically in the context of my current body fat. It's wild how much an influx of food and higher body fat can swing your lipid panels; I've seen my total cholesterol hit 400 in a surplus and then drop back to 200 once I returned to baseline.I've pivoted away from the fiber experiment because the inflammation was up and I just wasn't enjoying the food. Now, I'm doing a One Meal a Day (OMAD) approach. It's a tangible way for me to keep the reins on my total consumption while still feeling completely satiated—like a "lion eating a gazelle." My routine is heavy cream in my coffee during the day, followed by one large 2,500–3,000 calorie meal in the evening. After that meal, I'll take the kids to the gym and walk laps with the stroller to keep my blood sugar stable. I'm even going to grab an over-the-counter CGM (the Lingo) to track exactly how those meals and the post-meal movement impact my levels. We spent some time talking about the "shredded year-round" trap. If you're a natural lifter and you actually want to make progress from season to season, you have to allow yourself a legitimate building phase with higher body fat. Bragging about abs year-round doesn't mean much if you have no legs, no strength, and your hormones are trashed. You've got to give yourself time in a surplus if you want to put on substantial tissue.Tough Mudder: We're heading out next Friday with a crew of 10 or 12 people. We've got a massive Airbnb booked and I'm planning a build-your-own shish kebab night for everyone.Bacon & Bullets: We're getting ready to process our pigs soon. I want to have a big team day where we roast half a pig, shoot some guns, and make some cracklings.Show Prep: We've been driving around sticking up posters at local gyms to get people registered for the upcoming show.Giveaway: Congrats to Joyce, the winner of our $6,500 Carnivore Convenience collab bundle. She's set on groceries for a long time. We've got something huge in the pipeline that we aren't ready to talk about yet, but we'll dive into that on the next one.Greg Mahler is also a lifetime natural bodybuilder, and can be followed on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/ketogreg80/Register For My FREE Masterclass: https://www.ketobodybuilding.com/registration-2Get Keto Brick: https://www.ketobrick.com/Subscribe to the podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/42cjJssghqD01bdWBxRYEg?si=1XYKmPXmR4eKw2O9gGCEuQ
