What a privilege it is to welcome back to the show Justin Bland! I got to chat with Justin in the summer of '21 and was excited to book him for another interview. Justin is a truly world-class performer and teacher in all things trumpet, particularly baroque trumpet. I encourage you to give our previous interview a listen when you're finished with this one: https://trumpetdynamics.live/bland1 (https://trumpetdynamics.live/bland1) In this episode with Justin, you'll discover: -Why James Newcomb conscientiously objects to the use of the word "podcast" to describe this show -Justin Bland's most influential teachers -Tales of arranging for trumpet ensembles -"Misshapen pearls": An impromptu masterclass on trumpet history -How Justin vets potential participants for a music festival he directs in Denmark -And much more... About the guest: Applauded for his “gleaming trumpet work” (Hyde Park Herald) and “dazzling virtuosity” (Grunion Gazette), the American trumpeter Justin Bland is a versatile musician, performing on both historical and modern trumpets. He specializes in early music, most notably in difficult high-register music for Baroque trumpet; for example, he has played Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with groups in Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, the USA, Canada, Serbia, and Colombia. Before formally studying Baroque trumpet, Justin won first prize in multiple historical instruments divisions of the National Trumpet Competition. As a highly sought-after solo/principal Baroque trumpeter, Dr. Bland has performed with several leading early music ensembles throughout North America including American Bach Soloists, Apollo's Fire, Washington Bach Consort, Tempesta di Mare, Musica Angelica, Scaramella, Bach Collegium San Diego, Lyra Baroque Orchestra, and many others. As a modern trumpeter, Justin has experience performing in orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, pit orchestras for opera and musical theater, British brass bands, and numerous chamber ensembles. Before beginning his college career, he was principal trumpeter of the DC Youth Orchestra and had the opportunity to tour Japan as a trumpet soloist. He also performed regularly with the Prince George's Philharmonic while in high school. More recently, he as appeared as a soloist with the South Dakota Symphony, the Firelands Symphony, and the Las Vegas Sinfonietta. In addition to being a trumpeter, Justin is also a countertenor and has sung with Apollo's Fire and Opera Cleveland. While in Ohio working on his Master's degree, he was an alto section leader in the chamber and chancel choirs at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland and was the countertenor with Cantores Cleveland (now Contrapunctus). Where to even begin? This week is a very musically inspired episode. From the very start JtG finds old music he wrote as heard in the Intro and is quickly followed up by unnecessary wanking. JtG and BB finally debut the much awaited 'That Freaking Rocks' theme song and JtG embarrasses himself making the intro to the newest of new segments, Mineral Minute. This week's conversation is pulled by the Moon's gravitational force and covers what causes the tides, how do tides vary during monthly cycles, what types of tidal patterns exist, etc. More than likely it is just Thor drinking from his horn. We examine the Bay of Fundy and the rituals of the Grunion. We harness the energy and discuss the possibility of using tides as a viable source of energy. Millerite is this weeks sponsor in the Mineral Minute. We then turn our attention to tying up loose ends. The question is finally answered whether or not California will fall off into the ocean during the next big one. Probably not. But Amasia is a possibility. Lastly we discuss Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada Batholith. The episode ends with the return of That Freaking Rocks and the debut of the JtG and BB's music baby. The idea is floated of having musical guests join us for future episodes to discuss their music. If you have music or do science, reach out to us and we would love to have you on. Season 2, Episode 38 – This week, we’re still high on hops, but low on ABV. Hoppy pale ales are on deck. While we all love IPA and their juicy hoppiness, drinking more than a couple can really take a toll on your soberness. Luckily, breweries everywhere are making hoppier-than-usual versions of pale ale, which by style are lower in alcohol than IPA. This week, we’re drinking some of the best hoppy pale ales we could get our hands on. Off Color Brewing – Troublesome To break in our palates, we’re starting with a wheat gose from Off Color Brewing called Troublesome. We’re big fans of the artwork for this beer, as well as the contents inside. We were able to pick this up locally in Costa Mesa, California, which is rad because this beer is great! The salt presence is very much subdued while the beer is crisp and clean. Good stuff. Now to the pales. First up is Pseudo Sue from Toppling Goliath Brewery. This beer has a lot of hype behind it, and for good reason. This beer divided the room, mostly because of the hop character and lack of proper bitterness. But, we are being a bit hypercritical (hey, we’re a beer podcast), and all agree that it’s a great beer overall. Hoppy Pale Ales Next up is the citra hopped Zombie Dust from 3 Floyds Brewing Company. This beer is great, and very highly sought after. Greg is well known for not being a fan of the citra hop, but he love this beer. We all agree—it’s great. Grunion from Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits is up next. We’re quite partial to this local SoCal brewery, and this beer is simply excellent. Its massive hop nose and clean, dry finish is reminiscent of and IPA with the alcohol content of a pale ale. Grunion and Zombie Dust are pretty much on the same level as far as quality and overall tastiness, which is great for us in SoCal, since we can’t get Zombie Dust locally. Over-hopped pale ales are nothing new, but they seem to be popping up more and more lately. Freshness of a hoppy pale is of great importance, more so than IPA, due to its lower hopping rate and alcohol. As with IPA, find the freshest possible batch before purchasing.
