Highly accomplished Australian violinist Dale Barltrop has recently concluded a 10 year tenure as Concertmaster with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, having previously held that position with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He's also appeared as Concertmaster with the Australian World Orchestra, and guest directed the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Camerata. Since 2016, he's been first violin of the Australian String Quartet. Dale reflects on a remarkable musical journey that has taken him from Queensland state school music programs and youth orchestras to leading major orchestras in Australia and North America, before ultimately finding a new artistic home with the Australian String Quartet. He discusses the formative influence of inspirational teachers and mentors, the experience of moving alone to the United States as a teenager, and the unexpected path that led him to become concertmaster of both the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Along the way, he shares memories of childhood obsessions with Vivaldi and Rossini, the collaborative thrill of orchestral leadership, and the realities of balancing two highly sought after roles before deciding to devote himself fully to the Australian String Quartet. This conversation was recorded at the 2025 Australian Festival of Chamber Music. The 2026 festival is in Cairns and runs from July 24 to August 1.

Following a stunning opening concert in Manchester Camerata's new Mozart series, horn player Martin Owen talks about Mozart's Horn Concertos, working with Camerata, and a 30-year career spanning many of the UK's leading orchestras. Owen is warm, playful and generous, and that is reflected in his captivating performance. His is an instantly likeable sound on stage, one that conveys an infectious sense of confidence in performance. Little wonder performance. He fell in love with the sound of the horn at 3 years old. I rigorously checked out his story, of course. His follow up concert with Manchester Camerata is on 23 May 2025 in Stoller Hall.

Il Giustino RV 717 is a 1724 opera by Vivaldi set to a libretto by Nicolò Beregan, also set by Albinoni and Handel. The opera was composed for the 1724 carnival season in Rome and premiered at the Teatro Capranica. The aria of Anastasio, Vedrò con mio diletto, has become a famous piece sung at concerts and on recordings by countertenors such as Philippe Jaroussky and Jakub Józef Orliński and by contraltos as Sonia Prina. Sinfonia of Act I, Scene V, is also used by Vivaldi as the main motif of the first movement of La Primavera ("Spring") from his concerti The Four Seasons. The opera was revived in modern times in 1985 in a production directed by Alan Curtis and performed at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, at the Opéra Royal of the Palace of Versailles, and at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. According to data reported by Le magazine de l'opéra baroque, a subsequent performance in concert form was held at the Mégaron Musikis in Athens in 2007, while a further revival on stage, for a total of twelve performances, took place, between 2008 and 2009, at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater. In July 2018, a concert performance was given at the Festival International d'Opéra Baroque de Beaune — with the Accademia Bizantina conducted by Ottavio Dantone. In August 2018, a full costume version of Il Giustino, directed by Deda Cristina Colonna and conducted by Peter Spissky and the Camerata Øresund, figured as one of the central pieces in the Næstved Early Music Festival.

A groundbreaking ensemble bridging the gap between classical and popular music. The post Celebrating Camerata Punta del Este appeared first on WFMT.
Welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast about the bitter, sweet and bittersweet memories and experiences of classical musicians during the pandemic. Hosted and produced by me, Cliodhna Ryan, a violinist, it's an intimate and heart-warming exploration of the human spirit. My guest in episode fifteen is Irish Chamber Orchestra violinist Louis Roden. His bitter memory was a concert, a world premiere and a tour cancelled due to a Covid case in the orchestra, while his sweet is the quiet hours he spent working in companionable silence with his wife Monica in their allotment. Here with his hands in the earth and alongside his wife, he found nourishment for his soul, his spirit and his family. His bittersweet recollection is of performing for a small audience of 50 who were clustered in pods, at Kilkenny Arts Festival in August 2020. He couldn't help but notice the many audience members with tears streaming down their faces. When he looked around at his fellow musicians, he saw that they were also in tears. It was a profoundly moving moment, which was both beautiful and painful. This interview was recorded in September 2021. Born in Dublin, Louis Roden studied violin with Yossi Zivoni in London before attending the conservatoire in Marseille, where he studied chamber music and violin. Although he is based in Ireland, he has maintained a special relationship with France and has returned to perform on numerous occasions to perform with the Camerata de Provence. How high & low cultures co-exist. The financial crisis hit Athens hard, but the arts flourished - against the odds. Germany's massive Documenta14 arts festival transferred to Athens, ambitious cultural foundations mushroomed and street arts blossomed. Sofka visits the new Niarchos cultural centre and talks with magazine publisher Sudha Nair Iliades about big benefactors. Shipping magnates Onassis and Niarchos were rivals in love; their foundations now compete over their cultural legacies. We go to the lively neighbourhood of Psirri and seek out street art with George Papamattheakis. British cellist Chris Humphrys joined the ‘Camerata' or Armonia Atenea orchestra when it was founded 30 years ago. He discusses classical music and plays us Bach in a park. Finally, we dance our way out with Balkan brass band Agia Fanfara and street music.
