BLACK BAG, Steven Soderbergh's latest 90-minute collaboration with writer David Koepp, is in theory a sprawling international spy thriller, but in practice it's a more intimate study of how a marriage can thrive in an environment where trusting your spouse is considered a weakness. This week we talk about how that genre disconnect works for and against BLACK BAG, before bringing in this pairing's companion film, 1934's THE THIN MAN, to compare how Nick and Nora Charles's bantering, crime-solving partnership compares to the cooler, less boozy charms of Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender's married spies. Then for Your Next Picture Show, we reach back to one of this podcast's very first episodes to cannibalize a recommendation for a film that we've already covered on the show, but was too clear an inspiration on BLACK BAG to ignore. Steven Soderbergh's new BLACK BAG is a spy thriller, sure, but it's also the story of a marriage, and watching its sophisticated central couple banter their way through a sprawling mystery, it's hard not to be reminded of one of cinema's most enduring and endearing crime-solving couples, Nick and Nora Charles. So this week we're going back to their film debut, 1934's THE THIN MAN, to see how W.S. Van Dyke's (barely) pre-Code crime caper balances the effervescent charm of its hard-drinking stars against the plot mechanics of a murder mystery, and whether any of the film's many supporting players ever manage to steal the spotlight from Nick, Nora, and their disobedient dog Asta. Then in Feedback, a listener writes in with a notable omission from our recent discussion of STARSHIP TROOPERS. Please share your thoughts about THE THIN MAN, BLACK BAG, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.  "Crooked Souls" is an early short story by Dashiell Hammett, the master of hard-boiled detective fiction. First published in 1923 under the title "The Gatewood Caper," this tale introduces us to the unnamed Continental Op as he investigates a seemingly straightforward kidnapping case that quickly unravels into a web of family secrets, deceit, and twisted motives. Set against the backdrop of a prosperous lumber company and featuring a cast of morally complex characters, "Crooked Souls" showcases Hammett's signature style: gritty realism, sharp dialogue, and a keen eye for the darker side of human nature. The Narrator This week's guest narrator is MIchael Rutland. Michael was a professional journalist and photographer for several years, before earning a CELTA and moving to China to teach. He did so for nearly a decade before moving home to Austin, Texas, to earn a master's degree from Harvard and focus on his writing. He has recently registered with ACX for recording audiobooks, and has won several contracts to produce both fiction and non-fiction. He can be reached at oldsoulexplorer@gmail.com. The Author Born Samuel Dashiell Hammett in 1894, this American author rose to fame as a pioneer of hard-boiled detective fiction. After leaving school at fourteen and working various jobs, he became a Pinkerton detective, an experience that would deeply inform his writing. Hammett's gritty realism and unflinching portrayal of violence and corruption revolutionized the genre, establishing him as a literary icon. His most famous works include The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man, featuring iconic characters like Sam Spade and Nick and Nora Charles. Despite his success, Hammett's writing career was relatively short, and he spent his later years embroiled in political controversy and facing health issues. However, his legacy as a master of crime fiction remains undisputed.   If you enjoy classic detective stories with a hard-boiled edge, be sure to subscribe to The Classic Detective Stories Podcast and explore our library of captivating tales from the golden age of mystery and suspense. At 10:30PM eastern time on NBC's WEAF, The Bob Crosby Show took to the air in New York with the just-heard Les Tremayne as co-host and Shirley Mitchell as the special guest. This episode's rating was 13.8. Earlier this evening, Shirley Mitchell played Leila Ransom on NBC's The Great Gildersleeve. Opposite The Bob Crosby Show, The Adventures of The Thin Man took to the air on CBS. Based on the 1934 film starring William Powell and Myrna Loy, both Les Tremayne and Les Damon at times co-starred with Claudia Morgan as Nick and Nora Charles. Nick Charles was a retired private eye who just couldn't stay away from murder. The Thin Man gave its listeners all the censor would allow. Morgan cooed invitingly: she mouthed long, drawn-out kisses and kidded Nicky-darling about his outlandish pajamas. One critic strongly objected to the “oohhs” and “aahhs” and “mmmm's'' during kisses. But as feminine and cozy as Claudia Morgan played Nora, LIFE noted that “she can step across pools of blood with all the calm delicacy of a lady-in-waiting.” Parker Fennelly played Sheriff Ebenezer Williams. The rating for this episode was 16.1. Roughly twelve million people tuned in.

Book Vs. Movie: The Thin ManThe Dashiell Hammett Novel Vs. the 1934 Classic FilmThe Margos are looking for actors with chemistry and witty banter, so we had to dive into the fabulous world of Nick and Nora Charles and The Thin Man. What began as a feature in Redbook magazine in December 1933 turned into a best-selling novel by one of the most important writers of the 20th Century--Dashiell Hammett. We discussed Hammett when talking about The Maltese Falcon, and for several reasons, The Thin Man became his last novel. Hammett was a passionate anti-fascist who joined the Communist Party in 1937. By the 1950s, Congress investigated him before the House of Un-American Activities (HUAC), where he refused to “name names.” He went to a federal penitentiary in West Virginia and found himself impoverished afterward. His partner Lillian Hellman would go on to run his estate posthumously. The Thin Man is a story about a former New York City police officer (Nick Charles) who marries a wealthy socialite (Nora Charles) and spends his time between the city and San Francisco living as a bon vivant. One day, back in NYC, he runs into Dorothy Wynert, the daughter of a former client looking for her father.Later, we learn that his secretary (and former lover), Julia Wolf, was found murdered by his former wife, Mimi. The police think she was murdered by her gangster friend Shep Morelli. Mimi's new husband is much younger, tall, handsome, and slim (the THIN man!) There are all kinds of banter, double-crossing hijinks, and more plot holes than you can shake a stick at. The movie, directed by W. S. Van Dyke in 1934, stars William Powell & Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles and their dog, Asta. Screenwriters Albert Hackett & Francis Goodrich simplified the plot in the first six films about the couple. Powell and Loy shine with their glamorous look, which delighted audiences during the Great Depression, and would go on to be nominated for four Academy Awards (It Happened One Night swept that year.) Book Vs. Powell and Loy shine with their glamorous look, which delighted audiences during the Great Depression, and would go on to be nominated for four Academy Awards (It Happened One Night swept that year.) So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? "The Thin Man" is a radio play adaptation of the classic detective novel by Dashiell Hammett, which was first broadcast on Lux Radio Theatre on August 3, 1936, over the NBC Red Network. The play tells the story of retired detective Nick Charles, played by William Powell, and his wealthy socialite wife Nora, played by Myrna Loy, who become embroiled in a murder mystery when a former client of Nick's disappears and his secretary is found dead. The case takes them on a wild and witty ride through the world of high society and lowlifes as they search for clues to the killer's identity. The full cast of the radio play includes William Powell as Nick Charles, Myrna Loy as Nora Charles, Porter Hall as Clyde Wynant, Barbara Luddy as Dorothy Wynant, William Henry as Tommy, and Ted Osborne as Detective John Guild. The Lux Radio Theatre adaptation was so successful that it led to a series of films featuring Powell and Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, starting with the 1934 film "The Thin Man."The original novel by Dashiell Hammett was published in 1933 and was a groundbreaking work in the detective genre, known for its realistic portrayal of crime and characters. William Powell and Myrna Loy had already starred together in several films before "The Thin Man," but their chemistry as Nick and Nora Charles became legendary and they went on to star in a total of 14 films together. "The Thin Man" radio play was also adapted for television, with Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk playing Nick and Nora Charles in a series that ran from 1957 to 1959.

Featuring vocal talent by Les Damon and Claudia Morgan.First appearing in movie theaters in 1934, The Thin Man featured a slightly more seductive tone compared to other detective works from the period. Thus in turn, The Thin Man was promptly banned in Canada, as the sexy references between Detective Nick Charles and his beautiful wife Nora Charles violated the Canadian film code. However, in 1941 the film was eventually adapted into a radio series that was broadcast on all four major networks during the years 1941 to 1950.Originally airing 07/06/1948, be sure to gather around the fireplace as we unravel the slightly seductive mystery in "The Adventure of the Passionate Palooka," with Detective Nick Charles!Enjoying The Film Detective? You can watch this episode here.Or connect with us here:FacebookInstagramTwitterYouTubeWant even more? Within days, his lover, her old friend, begs Helen to find the killer before she's arrested for murder. Helen quickly realizes that solving a murder mystery in real life is a lot more dangerous than reading one. She decides to create her own Detection Club of expert sleuths-Miss Marple, Jessica Fletcher, Nora Charles, Agatha Raisin, and, yes, Nancy Drew to help unearth the truth.Detective Joe McAlister recognizes Helen's insight into back office real estate deals and local players. And for the first time since her husband's death, Helen meets a man who might return zingers as quick as she tosses them out. Mystery lovers hungry for a smart gutsy woman, a fast-moving plot, and an insider's look into a business everyone talks about, but few understand, will devour this first in a series.Jan Brogan - The Combat Zone: Murder, Race, and Boston's Struggle for Justice (Bright Leaf Press). At the end of the 1976 football season, more than forty Harvard athletes went to Boston's Combat Zone to celebrate. In the city's adult entertainment district, drugs and prostitution ran rampant, violent crime was commonplace, and corrupt police turned the other way. At the end of the night, Italian American star athlete Andy Puopolo, raised in the city's North End, was murdered in a stabbing. Three African American men were accused of the crime. His murder made national news and led to the eventual demise of the city's red-light district.Starting with this brutal murder, The Combat Zone tells the story of the Puopolo family's struggle with both a devastating loss and a criminal justice system that produced two trials with opposing verdicts, all within the context of a racially divided Boston. Brogan traces the contentious relationship between Boston's segregated neighborhoods during the busing crisis; shines a light on a court system that allowed lawyers to strike potential jurors based purely on their racial or ethnic identity; and lays bare the deep-seated corruption within the police department and throughout the Combat Zone. What emerges is a fascinating snapshot of the city at a transitional moment in its recent past.Product Details About the Author

There's nothing like the bubbly fun, clever banter and twisty plots of a romantic caper movie*. It's just the thing when you crave romance and sexy flirting in beautiful settings, plus a dash of gentle mystery and mild suspense. *Episode contains spoilers. Lots.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comMovies:The Lady Vanishes is a comfort re-watch for me, even though I know whodunit. The central romance is so charming. The Thin Man and its sequels are delightful from start to finish. Nick and Nora Charles are the ultimate married-couple energy to me. Made more than 80 years ago and still bright and fun.Charade has been called the best Hitchcock film that he didn't direct, and I agree. I don't know what's more appealing: the plot, the Paris setting, Cary Grant's handsome humor or Audrey Hepburn's beauty and stunning costumes. The gorgeous French Riviera settings of Murder Mystery and To Catch a Thief are worth the watch alone, but the plots and champagne-bubble fun will win you over.Manhattan Murder Mystery isn't top drawer Woody Allen but it's sweet and fun. Diane Keaton is the star here. The Lovebirds walks so many fine lines well that its effect and scope just can't be summed up in a trailer. You have to see it.Steve Carell and Tina Fey are at their straight-man best in Date Night, especially during the car chase scene.Other romantic capers worth a look: The beautiful Audrey Hepburn is back for another vintage caper, this time with Peter O'Toole in How to Steal a Million. There was a remake, but the original The Thomas Crown Affair is full of 60's cool. I prefer this Jim Carrey remake of Fun with Dick and Jane to the original.Tom Cruise is ridiculously charming and Cameron Diaz shows off her great comedic timing in Knight and Day.It's all about the hot chemistry between sexy Sean Connery and sexy Catherine Zeta-Jones, plus a badass plot in Entrapment. The warmth and humor of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez were never better than in Out of Sight.Hot White Heist is a queer audio caper performed by a cast of talented stage and screen actors. It's daffy and delightful.

Wake up, all you smoke dreamers! It's time to talk about the best married couple in all of film history: Nick and Nora Charles! After the Thin Man is a 1936 comedy-mystery film from director W.S. Van Dyke, starring William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Jimmy Stewart. It's the direct sequel to the wildly popular Thin Man film made two years before, which itself was based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett. In this follow-up, detectives Nick and Nora Charles arrive back home in San Francisco on New Year's Eve, fresh off their mystery-solving success in New York. But a new year brings new crimes, and the bantering couple finds themselves drawn into a murder mystery involving a member of Nora's snobby family. And let's just say that this after party truly gets one thing right by centering things around the fun banter of Nick and Nora. We get a lot of chemistry between Powell and Loy, as they piece together a rather silly mystery involving bad singing, lost security deposits, and Jimmy Stewart at his most zany.Listen to Áine and Kevin sit around the fire, puffing on some smoke dreams and all the delightful wackiness of this old film. In June, 2019, a nice young man in a blue suit asked me “when was the last time you smoked marijuana, ma’am?” I told him the truth – semester break during my sophomore year at Tulane – because you don’t lie to the FBI. I have no objection to the truth, but I don’t let it push me around. -- False Flag in Autumn, Michael Bowen I love a good locked room mystery almost as much as I love the Nick and Nora Charles dynamic. Author Michael Bowen combines both of these in several of his nifty, "plucky couples" series, starting with his first mystery, Badger Game. But he is also the author of thrillers, and his latest book, False Flag in Autumn, pits a savvy political operative against evil -- and her own conscience. Complex characters and high stakes ignite this story, the second in the Josie Kendall series. We also chat about the books that shaped his writing, and his life (turns out Perry Mason had an influence on Michael's choice of career). We're both fans of Agatha Christie (Alert! Spoilers for Murder on The Orient Express), Raymond Chandler, and Erle Stanley Gardner, among others. You can learn more about Michael's books on his author page. As always, if you'd rather read than listen, the transcript is below. Enjoy! -- Laura ****************************************************** Laura Brennan: Michael Bowen started writing while working as a trial attorney. While not playing Perry Mason in court, he was writing mysteries across genres including locked rooms, puzzle mysteries, and thrillers. Now that he's retired, we can look forward to many more books from Michael. Michael, thank you so much for joining me today. Michael Bowen: Well, thank you for having me. I'm really looking forward to this. LB: Tell me a little bit about your career pre-writing. How did you decide to get into law? MB: Well, as I was growing up, I had basically two possible career paths. One was to become a journalist and the other was to become President of the United States. And I knew I couldn't start at President, so I had to do something to earn a living. So I settled on practicing law because that's the way Abraham Lincoln did it. He practiced law and then he became President. And I had a very healthy sense of self-esteem back then. So, basically, I turned to law because I decided I wanted to be one of the people doing things that people write about instead of one of the people doing the writing. In the first series that I began, it's a "plucky couple," and the male half of the plucky couple had to surrender his license to practice law because of some shenanigans that he engaged in. And the female half was what back in the sexist, early 1960s was called a Girl Friday for a law firm. So she wasn't a lawyer, but she did stuff that people found helpful. My next plucky couple series involved a foreign service officer who was not a lawyer and the female half of that was a bookstore owner, and so that was a lot of fun. And in the next plucky couple series, I had a lawyer married to a woman who was a university professor and they solved mysteries together. LB: I love the whole plucky couple concept. I'm a big fan of The Thin Man series and I just love the idea of two people working together on their marriage and also on solving crimes. What was your inspiration for plucky couples? MB: I was absolutely enthralled by plucky couples, by Nick and Nora, by Jerry and Susan North, and I noticed that no one was doing that anymore so I wanted to bring that concept back to mysteries. But in a way, my real inspiration was my wife, Sara, before she was my wife. We met at a law school mixer for first-year law students and one of the fellow students, our classmate, was basically putting a move on her. He said, "I think that you should not believe anything that cannot be empirically demonstrated." And she said, "Do you really believe that?" And it took him three beats to figure out he'd been had.

Featuring special guest Nick Ransbottom! What other noirs didn't have, THE THIN MAN series did: levity, breathing room, characters who weren't written full of life just to have it snuffed out on the next page. Nick and Nora Charles's charmed life as bourgeois socialites and functioning alcoholics could be an uneasy basis for a hard-boiled plot but for William Powell and Myrna Loy's bedrock performances. Based on the 1934 Dashiell Hammett novel, THE THIN MAN made the leap from the page to the screen that same year, carrying a lot of literary baggage with it (including a somewhat overwritten script) but still weaving between noir and comedy like a boxer between punches. The Thin Man is almost perfect: main characters Nick and Nora Charles, are perhaps the world’s most charming detective couple; they have an adorable dog; the banter is fast and witty; and the multiple side characters are fleshed out and fascinating… and yet there’s one little problem. David realizes that a B+ movie frustrates him more than a solid C, while Suzan comes to the disheartening revelation that the history of film is not, in fact, a straight line toward cultural and political progress.

THE THIN MAN (1934) has been called the original comedy detective film, and is based on the book by Dashiell Hammett. William Powell and Myrna Loy star as husband and wife detective team Nick and Nora Charles. Nick has married Nora, an heiress from a wealthy Sam Francisco family, and retired from his days as a detective to enjoy the good life. When the two visit New York City, Nick is drawn back into service after an old friend of his, Clyde, disappears. After Clyde’s secretary/girlfriend Is murdered, all signs point to Clyde as the guy who did it. His daughter, played by Mia Farrow's mom, Maureen O'Sullivan, refuses to believe it and hires Nick to crack the case. Did you know that THE THIN MAN started out as a B picture, and then turned into a phenomenon? James and Lara talk about the popularity of the breakout star of the film, Nick and Nora's dog, Asta (played by canine actor Skippy), the Oscar nominations THE THIN MAN received, and who the title of the film refers to (NOT star William Powell...in this picture, at least).

Today's author writes a cozy mystery series with echoes of my favorite film, "The Thin Man." (Dashiell Hammett's book is darn good as well, but I'm a sucker for Myrna Loy and William Powell.) Her Nick and Nora mysteries feature a crime reporter starting over back in her home town and a cat who may -- or may not -- be the reincarnation of a missing detective. Together with a wonderful supporting cast, they solve crimes and mete out justice. Meow If It's Murder is the first in this charming series. Toni and I chat about a lot of things: favorite authors (including the delightful Krista Davis, who you can hear interviewed here) and two charities she actively supports: Kids Need To Read (founded by Denise Gary, P.J. Haarsma, and actor Nathan Fillion) and Alley Cat Allies. To learn more about Toni, be sure to check out her author page and of course the blog she shares with her cat, ROCCO. He interviews mystery authors and runs frequent book giveaways, so don't miss it. As always, here's the transcript if you'd rather read than listen. Enjoy! Transcript of T.C. LoTempio Interview Laura Brennan: T.C. LoTempio is the national bestselling author of the Nick and Nora Mystery series, as well as nearly a dozen other books, ranging from paranormal mysteries to rom com. Meow if It’s Murder introduced Nora Charles, a crime reporter who longs for a quiet life, and Nick, the cat who adopted her. Toni, thank you for joining me. T.C. LoTempio: Thank you for having me, Laura. LB: Tell me a little bit about yourself. What got you started writing? TL: Okay. Well, I’ve been writing since I was ten years old. My mother used to read me stories at night, and I wouldn’t like the ending, so I’d make up my own. And then I’d buy comic books, and I wouldn’t like the way those ended, so I’d make up those stories. And it just progressed from there. I used to write fairy tales, you know, and I was always good at English in school. I got away from it a little bit. I got married, life got in the way as they say. And then, after my parents died, I kinda got back into it. I was at a training session with a friend, and we were learning how to do e-mails at the time, that’s how long ago this was. And she said to me, “Oh, you write such good e-mails. You should probably be a writer.” And I said, “You know, I think I am one. I just have to get back into it.” And it just took off from there. LB: You’ve actually written many, many different kinds of novels. Are you finding your genre? TL: I think it started out that way. Actually, the type of novel that I enjoy writing the most is the one that I stopped because agents would tell me there’s no market for it. It’s Horror. Stephen King-type books. And they said, unless you are Stephen King, there’s no market for it. So I figured, well, if I want to get published, I’d better write something else. LB: I find that hilarious, since I’m a member of the Horror Writers Association and a lot of people are actually selling horror these days. TL: Well, that’s good to know, if I want to start writing it again. LB: Certainly in movies, almost the closest thing there is to a Whodunit is a horror film. TL: I would tend to agree with you. I must’ve seen “Halloween” at least three dozen times, if not more. LB: Yeah, and it’s too bad, too, because they used to make movies very much like -- to bring this back to your wonderful series -- very much like “The Thin Man.” And they don’t make those anymore. TL: I know, and isn’t that a shame? I think maybe more people might go to the movies if they did that. LB: Absolutely! So, tell me how “The Thin Man” -- was “The Thin Man” really your inspiration? Because it trickles through your series so beautifully. TL: Well, it was kind of a combination of William Powell and my cat. LB: For those who haven’t yet read your series, just a little background. It’s a cozy series about a woman named Nora who’s in her thirties and she’s been very suc...

After the success of the The Thin Man in 1934, MGM was eager to get stars William Powell and Myrna Loy back in front of the cameras for a sequel.  It took two years and, if film lore is to be believed, some financial courting of Loy but, with a new story from Dashiell Hammett, the country's favorite sleuthing couple was at it again in the 1936 follow-up, After The Thin Man. Returning to San Francisco from New York celebrities after solving the Thin Man case, Nick and Nora Charles have barely popped the New Year's champagne before they're embroiled in their next mystery.  But this time it's personal.  The husband of Nora's cousin has disappeared, setting in motion a chain of deceit, blackmail and murder. Along for the ride are their adorable and mischievous wire fox terrier Asta, a supporting cast of eccentric and hilarious characters and a young Jimmy Stewart. In addition to swooning over the chemistry between Powell and Loy, Dan and Vic discuss the summer adventures that took them from Maine to the Dominican Republic, give their thoughts on the prevalence of true crime shows set in Florida and Canada and commiserate on living and renovating in the Big Apple. Just as radio detectives often seemed to be loners, there were also several radio detective husband and wife teams. Most think immediately of Nick and Nora Charles, but another popular one on radio that even made it to film and television was Mr. & Mrs. North. Based on the novels of Frances and Richard Lockridge, for most of the radio run Jerry North was played by Joseph Curtain while Pam North was portrayed by Alice Frost (right).
