The Mariners are back! Yes, they lost today for the first time since last weekend, but the bigger story was the Mets' loss to Philly due to former M Edwin Diaz giving up five runs in the ninth, much to the dismay of Mike Francesa. It's not the first time Diaz hasn't looked good of late, and when you combine that with Cano's problems, and everything we've gotten in return for those two guys, it looks like we've won that trade. Baseball attendance is in trouble, and the M's in particular are down because, well, the team isn't good, so what can the team do to get more fans to go to games? What motivates you to go to baseball games? Anthony Davis has waived his $4 million kicker, and reportedly it's because he's going to make an extra $4 million for his role in Space Jam 2. Wait, is that allowed? Sounders midfielder Harry Shipp drops by the studio to talk about Saturday's match against Vancouver, Chad Marshall, plus thoughts on flopping and more.

It’s been an interesting couple weeks to be a Seattle Sounders fan. The Sounders, of course, won their first game of the year, a confidence-building win over the New York Red Bulls. The goals from Clint Dempsey, Jordan Morris and Harry Shipp all doing their part to aid in the good feelings. The game also featured standout performances from Joevin Jones, Cristian Roldan and even Gustav Svensson, who’s proving himself to be a regular Swedish Army Knife. But then Dempsey went on the international stage and bagged himself a hat trick. That doesn’t do much for the Sounders directly, but it sure is nice knowing that the Designated Player appears to be back to his old self. Speaking of Svensson, we also got to interview him. He’s got some great stories about playing in Crimea at the time of the Russian invasion and apparently even played a game in Turkey in front of a 45,000-strong crowd of all women. Definitely worth a listen.

We're now just a days away from the Seattle Sounders' first game as defending MLS Cup champions. Has a pretty nice ring to it, right? Well, we figured we better get the band together for a season preview, inviting Richard Farley onto the show to give us another perspective on the Sounders as well as the rest of the competition. We all seemed to agree that FC Dallas and Toronto FC are probably the biggest threats to unseating the Sounders. We've also decided that if the Portland Timbers can't put it together with the squad they assembled that the guy who deserves the blame is almost certainly Caleb Porter. In between the Sounders and MLS segments, we sit down with Harry Shipp. Suffice it to say, you're probably going to end up rooting for him after listening to this interview. Shipp talked extensively about how he never felt his head was right in Montreal and was generally quite introspective. This is a player who seems to have a coaching career in his future.

Filibuster is back on a Tuesday morning, and we're both happy (about soccer) and sad (about Prince). We start (7:30) by talking about D.C. United's 3-0 win over the New England Revolution, and we have to mention the Luciano Acosta goal. We talk about how Fabian Espindola got himself injured by shooting as well as the improved play of Bobby Boswell and the back four. We end by talking about the buildup to Lamar Neagle's penalty kick goal (and how nice it was to have a well taken penalty) and talk about Alvaro Saborio's goal and whether it should have counted. In the second segment we welcome back Sean Spence from Hot Time in Old Time to talk about D.C. United's upcoming trip to Chicago. We talk about the Fire's offensive woes so far and whether or not they are explicitly playing defense first. We compare Veljko Paunovic to Frank Yallop, and ask Sean about Paunovic's benching of Sean Johnson. We inquire about the state of a number of players, including Razvan Cocis, Kennedy Igboananike, and Gilberto (with a sad interlude about Harry Shipp), before ending by asking Sean how much he misses Chris Rolfe and Patrick Nyarko. So for the second straight year, MLS First Kick ended up feeling more like a first kick in the nuts of the year for Vancouver Whitecaps, as they went down to a 3-2 defeat to an impressive Montreal Impact side. We're joined by Harjeet Johal to pick over the bones of the 'Caps season opening loss. What went wrong? What was up with the usually stellar Vancouver defence, Fraser Aird and the lack of tracking back from the midfielders? And what happened to converting more of those chances? We look at all this and a lot more from the game from both a Whitecaps and an Impact perspective. We hear from both coaches, Carl Robinson and Mauro Biello, about what they thought of their sides opening day performance and what they can take away from the match, and chat with one of Montreal's goalscorers, Dominic Oduro, about the game, his goal and the play of Ignacio Piatti. And there's still time to catch up with new Montreal midfielder Harry Shipp and find out about how he's settling in to his new team, the weirdness and pressure of not turning out in a Chicago jersey, and his thoughts on the season opener. There's a lot of chat to be had, so have a listen!

David is out cavorting, but Andrew, Matt and Arielle are around to hold down the fort. The Sounders remain mum, but Obafemi Martins says he’s on his way to China. Sapong is targeting 20 goals. Who else could break out? In the second segment, adidas senior product manager Mike Walker (translation: the creative force behind MLS jerseys and team gear) joins Andrew and Arielle to explain the how, what and why behind this year’s kit releases. Soccer Talk with Tyler Green and Simon Fudge is back for the February 14th edition - presented by Metrotown Orthopedic & Sports Physiotherapy, as they broadcast from the Barber and Co. studios. On this episode, Tyler and Simon discuss why it was time for Gershon Koffie to move on from Whitecaps FC after the midfielder was traded to New England Revolution on Thursday. With Koffie gone, what does this mean for Vancouver’s other defensive midfield options like Deybi Flores and Russell Teibert? The boys also discuss the latest additions to Whitecaps FC 2. Is there more pressure for WFC 2 to perform this year in USL than their inaugural season in 2015? 15-year-old striker Alphonso Davies has impressed this preseason with the Whitecaps first team, but where should the Edmonton youngster start the 2016 campaign - MLS, USL, or back in Whitecaps Residency? There is MLS news, with Harry Shipp now a Montreal Impact player after leaving hometown club Chicago Fire, and EPL giants Arsenal being confirmed as this summer’s opponents for the MLS All-Stars in San Jose. All that and more on the February 14th version of Soccer Talk! More info about Soccer Talk on Facebook! And visit our friends at Find a Property and at Tenth and Proper.

It is a Tuesday, and that means that Filibuster is back for your enjoyment. Jason, Ben, and Adam have to take some time to talk about Copa Concacaf and the failure of the USMNT and Jurgen Klinsmann to qualify for the 2017 Confederations Cup. We talk about how at least the game was exciting for neutrals, how it was close on the scoreboard but not on the field, how the USMNT hasn't improved since the World Cup, and who should stay and who should go. We then talk about tonight's game between the USMNT and Costa Rica, but we're mostly just talking more about the general state of the USMNT. We talk about Fabian Johnson being sent home, Klinsmann's statements vs. his reality, and whether or not he should be fired from either his technical director or head coach jobs. Finally, we address the strawman of whether or not there is anyone who could possibly replace Jurgen. We then turn to D.C. United and talk about this weekend's game versus the Chicago Fire. We talk about Harry Shipp actually being played in position, Matt Polster being played all over, Steve Birnbaum versus Kofi Opare, and how to beat the Fire. It is a jam packed episode, so give it a listen!

We're here to sing the praises of Pedro Ribeiro. Actually, we're here to break down the 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew, as well as look ahead to Saturday's match-up with the Chicago Fire. Joining us to talk about the Fire and what they bring to the table is Sean Spence, the editor-in-chief of Hot Time in Old Town, our SB Nation sister blog that covers Chicago on a daily basis. We also get into the big stadium news that Orlando City dropped on Friday about privately funding a bigger downtown soccer-specific stadium than was originally planned. They say "bigger is better" and it sure will be when the new home of the Lions is unveiled some time next summer. And would you believe that we had this entire conversation without once saying anything bad about our opponents' fans? Well, we did. Here's how this episode of the PawedCast went down (and you can subscribe to us on iTunes and/or Stitcher): 0:26- Me, Austin David and Andrew Harrison discuss the change of direction for the downtown stadium and we break down the crew and look ahead to potential lineup changes at Chicago. Also, Pedro Ribeiro is good at kicking soccer balls. 29:29- Sean Spence hops aboard to tell us why we should fear Harry Shipp, David Accam and company. His breakdown of his team will give you all the background info on the Fire that you need. 49:30- It's prediction time, and you know darn well we're going to be wrong. That's it for this week. Did he see this coming? What makes Dax McCarty the ideal captain? If you watched the College Cup, you probably wondered about the quality of soccer being played and the bus Virginia parked in front of their own goal. If you didn't watch, you probably heard all about it on Twitter. So what's more important? Winning ugly or at least trying to play? Meanwhile, another trophy was lifted in Liga MX, Frank Lampard's NYCFC fate got murkier, Steven Gerrard was linked with the Red Bulls and Brek Shea seems to be on his way to Orlando. Oh, and what do we make of this? The Fire aren't just being linked with Designated Players, they're signing them. Kennedy Igboananike is already in the bag, and there might be a Ghanaian striker on the way as well. No matter how you twist it, Frank Yallop is making moves. He gives the guys the lowdown on everything going down in the Windy City, plus elaborates on Harry Shipp's future.
