Dracula by Bram Stoker, chapter 26, narrated by Isaac BirchallSeward writes as they head to Galatz. He is concerned that Mina revealed less and less in her hypnotised state; she reveals that she still hears the lapping of water, letting the men know that the count is still near the boats. The men hope to reach him before the coffin is unloaded, but arrive too late, finding out that the box was unloaded by a businessman named Hildesheim, who in turn gave it to a man named Skinsky, who they find out has been murdered…Mina is determined to find out where the count has Gone, and sets out a plan to map out every possible route he could have taken and to thus determine where he is. After presenting this info to the men, Van Helsing proclaims her a genius, and they make a plan to tackle him from all routes; Seward and Morris by horse; Holmwood and Harker by steam boat; Mina and Van Helsing heading in front to cut him off at the Castle.During Holmwood and Harker's journey, they hear of a large boat with double the normal crew headed up stream and determine that this must be the count's vessel. Seward and Morris follow on horse. Mina notes that she and Van Helsing have arrived in Veresti where they get a carriage and horses to get to Castle Dracula. She thinks back to Johnathan as she sees the country side that he saw many months before, and notes how nice it would have been to travel here with him if none of this horror had occurred to them.Get SurfShark and protect yourself online todayVPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389Get data brokers to stop selling your information with:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Dracula by Bram Stoker chapter 17, narrated by Isaac BirchallJohnathan and Mina Harker make their way to London where they stay with Dr Seward. Here, lucy transcribes his Diary so that all of the events in Johnathan, Lucy, Mina, and Seward's Diaries can be put into a chronological order. Seward in the meantime reads the Harkers' journals where he realises that Dracula is in fact his neighbour, and starts to understand that Renfield's behaviour could be linked to the coming and going of the count. Johnathan researches the Earth-boxes that have been shipped to England from Transylvania. He finds out that all of them were shipped to Carfax, but seems to think that some of them were probably moved in recent weeks, so that Dracula can have a larger area of influence. The other men arrive at the asylum to meet the new members of the team. Prevent is one of four limbs of the government's anti-terrorism policy. It is directed at behaviours and ideas that the government deems to be extreme and to represent a possible ‘gateway' to violent offences. The Prevent duty applies in schools, colleges and universities and many other public spaces. It professes to safeguard individuals and funnel those at risk to programmes/interventions of de-radicalisation. In light of the Government's upcoming Independent Review under William Shawcross, many have voiced opposition to this policy, arguing that Prevent entails marginalisation, racism and problematises certain ‘communities' that are perceived as being against ‘British Values'. Today I am joined by Prof John Holmwood and Dr Gavin Bailey, who are both counter terrorism experts as we discuss the future of prevent, it's criticisms and the recently published People's Review of Prevent. We also talk about John's book (together with Therese O'Toole) on the Birmingham Trojan Horse affair and the problems of intervening in a pre-criminal space with the most vulnerable in our society.   This session looks at the beginnings of modern European social theory in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The English political philosophers, Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and John Locke (1632-1704), set out a distinction between the ‘state of nature' and the ‘state of society' in order to identify rights and obligations associated with private property. Their writings are widely seen in the context of the later development of capitalism, but are much more directly concerned with the justification of colonialism with which they were each directly engaged. In the eighteenth century, writers associated with the Scottish Enlightenment –for example, David Hume (1711-1776), Adam Smith (1723-1790), William Robertson (1721-1793), John Millar (1735-1801), and Adam Ferguson (1723-1816) – developed a typology of different types of society as stages of historical development. In this session, we consider how these ideas contributed to the view that ‘freedom' was a product of European modernity and that modernity operated in terms of an internal logic from which colonialism was effaced. In early 2014, the media was full of stories of a ‘plot to Islamicise schools' in Birmingham, Bradford and Oldham. Various official investigations claimed to find evidence of extremism, but when misconduct cases were brought against teachers in September 2015, the only charges were ‘undue religious influence'. The cases collapsed in May 2017 because of ‘impropriety' on the part of lawyers acting for the government. Nonetheless, the affair led to important changes in policy – a new emphasis within Prevent on safeguarding children from non-violent extremism, and a requirement on schools to teach ‘fundamental British values'. Most recently, the latter has spilled over into arguments that ‘British values' be taught using the Equality Act 2010 and its protected characteristics. This session will address the background to the affair in Government attacks on multiculturalism, the ‘authoritarian' governance of schools under the academies programme, as well as secular liberal criticisms of the role of religion in schools.   John Holmwood was an expert witness for the defence in the professional misconduct case brought against senior teachers at Park View Education Trust. Nights Black Agents > The Dracula DossierOur favorite agents struggle to come to grips with their horrific experiences in Singleton's house, and realize what sort of twisted dangers they're facing. The classic lesson of "basics, basics, basics" drives the agents to take another look at Edom, attack vectors, and potential Edom bases; Ring, Holmwood, and Gouldmering. As they learn more and more about the conspiracy, the agents start to find more connections with some very powerful government officials, social figures, and the occasional.... giant dog. At the rate things are going, cultists and debaucherous sex parties might soon be the least of their worries, especially as they make their move on the Hillingham Estate.
