Margaret Cunneen SC was one of Australia’s top Crown Prosecutors, renowned for securing convictions against some of the country’s most notorious criminals, including the Butcher of Bega and Robert “Dolly” Dunn. She also led the prosecution of the Skaf gang rapes in 2000, where brothers Bilal and Mohammed Skaf orchestrated a series of brutal, ethnically motivated sex crimes. One of the most harrowing incidents involved 14 men and boys sexually assaulting a single woman. Today, only one of the key perpetrators remains behind bars. Margaret’s remarkable career, including her work on this case, is chronicled in The Boxing Butterfly, which you can find here. On this weeks podcast, I spoke with Australian barrister & Public Prosecutor now defence lawyer Margaret Cunneen SC. For over four decades, Margaret Cunneen helped put away some of Australia's worst, as a crown prosecutor and, as her profile grew, so did the media attention, Margaret recalls the headline cases that helped establish her reputation, the controversies she became embroiled in. In 2022 Margaret published her autobiography “ The Boxing Butterfly” A Life Of Conviction is a career chronicle of Margaret Cunneen SC—the boxing butterfly who turned the tables on ICAC, amidst prosecuting murderers, pedophiles and rapists—as she launches into her new chapter as a defence barrister. In her rearview mirror, Cunneen sees her trial successes—her convictions—interspersed with the flak from the ground fire of some colleagues who resented her success and were determined to stop her climb to greater heights. She regrets nothing and is satisfied with what she does. As Madam Crown, she empathised with the victims and their families. Now, as defence counsel, she empathises with the accused she defends. And what stories she tells! Some are gruesome and confronting, such as prosecuting the irreverent Skafs for gang rape, Robert ‘Dolly' Dunn for pedophilia, the Butcher of Bega for unspeakable medical malpractice and the Charbaji Brothers for an ice- fuelled torture session that ended in murder. Others—especially relating to her defence clients, are filled with humanity.  Margaret is a wife Mother and Grandmother loves her NRL and is a passionate Manly fan, she is deeply faithful we spoke about the many high-profile cases she has been involved with the toll of being in the public sector, and how Margaret dealt with some of the terrible cases she has worked on over the 45 years. This was a ripping chat. Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Margaret Cunneen SC Editor: Kyle Watkins Investigative Consultant: Adam Holloway

Las Catalinas might be the most beautiful town built in the 21st century.  And my guest today, Sara Bega, has stewarded its evolution as Town Architect for a decade.  Las Catalinas is a car-free, kid-friendly, multi-generational community in Costa Rica. Their goal is to create a pedestrian-first environment that maximizes kid freedom and allows for independent exploration and discovery. The town is built on 20% of the 1200-acre site, with a mix of houses, flats, hotels, and shops.  We discuss Sara's professional journey, and the principles and practices behind developing such a stunningly beautiful and human neighborhood that serves as an inspiration and example for what is possible today.   If you do anything today, just click on this link so you can see the town.  It stands as a testament to the beauty humans can cultivate when they set their mind to it: Beach Town in Guanacaste, Costa Rica | Las Catalinas (lascatalinascr.com) TAKEAWAYS Creating a car-free, kid-friendly community allows for independent exploration and fosters curiosity and connection with nature. A pedestrian-first environment benefits not only children but also adults and families, creating a sense of community and connection. Las Catalinas is a successful example of a car-free community, with a mix of houses, flats, hotels, and shops built on a 1200-acre site. The community achieves car-free living through walkability, valet services, and emergency vehicle access. The town architect's role is to oversee the design and planning of the community, ensuring a balance between privacy, walkability, and optimized views. Creating a sustainable and adaptable community requires prioritizing human experience and connection. Designing a walkable town with a mix of residential and commercial spaces fosters a sense of community. The legal structure of a town should allow for flexibility and adaptability over time. Trust in human intelligence and the ability to solve problems is crucial for the success of a community. Creating a sense of place involves considering the local climate, using natural materials, and designing for the long term. The apprentice looks back on the shock of her relocation to the bustling city of Sydney. Molly says it's quite an experience to ride regularly against some of Australia's best jockeys. She pays tribute to two Sydney female role models. The talented young rider takes us back to childhood days on the farm at Tumbarumba, and her early education on stock horses. She looks back on other riding pursuits. She says it was her next door neighbour who alerted her to the excitement of horse racing. Molly remembers her first experience of trackwork and an apprenticeship to local trainer George Dimitropoulos. School wasn't Molly's favourite place, but  she did well in one particular subject. Sport was a different matter. She showed plenty of ability in several endeavours. Molly vividly recalls her unimpressive race riding debut at Leeton on Mouse Almighty, and the magic of her first win at Wagga on the same little mare. She looks back on her transfer to a much busier environment at Canberra with trainer Doug Gorrel. Molly talks of the great support she received from another well known Canberra trainer, and the thrill of winning the SDRA junior title. The young jockey takes us through the freakish accident in which she was involved on the way to Albury races with Doug Gorrel. Molly has no doubt the fact that she was asleep in the passenger seat, may have saved her life. She talks about Doug's serious injury and the sad loss of a promising filly in the accident. Molly gives high praise to a select group of southern districts jockeys who helped her along the way. She makes special mention of valuable tutelage given by former jockey Darryn Murphy of the Skillinvest Employment and Training Company. Molly acknowledges the support of her master John Sargent, and the well known training talents of the expat Kiwi horseman. She was gobsmacked when given the opportunity to ride in this year's Doncaster. She talks of a few special horses to help her along the way since moving to Randwick. The Tumbarumba product says she's had to deal with one particular problem in her race riding technique. Molly says she enjoys sneaking back to her old stamping ground from time to time. Her mother Jacqie lives at Bega nowadays.  The 21 year old speaks of the downside of living in Sydney with her partner Ed Waters still in Wagga. He expects to join her at the completion of his electrical trades apprenticeship. Molly isn't a movie buff but there's one she's seen many times over. Not surprisingly it's about a horse. The apprentice expresses her gratitude for having no weight problems. It's a nice yarn with a most amiable young lady from a tiny town near the Snowy Mountains. Is it any wonder this girl can ride!

In our first segment, AJ Brau, the CEO of Wander, gives a brief update on her company and her thoughts on the role of AI in the destination marketing industry. The conversation then moves into a discussion about breaking into destination marketing and what software companies and destinations can do to facilitate partnerships. For the second part of the episode, Bega Metzner, the commissioner of the Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission, talks about her background in film and her current role. Bega also discusses the impact of film projects on communities and the best ways for DMOs to support film commissions." “It's up to us software companies to just stick with it too, because companies only die when the founder gives up, right? And we have to be gritty and we have to believe in this industry, believe that destination organizations have a big role to play in the future. And that's why we're going to stay and continue to innovate here and we are all in at Wander...I'm betting everything on destination organizations and I'm so confident in the role that this industry will play in the future of our world.” - AJ Brau“ The biggest part of that is recognizing that, the need for flexibility. If I could say flexible and flexibility a hundred times, you still won't understand until you see it in front of your eyes, where you have 25 people who are supposed to come in on this date and then all of a sudden you get a phone call and it could be the day before and they say, ‘It's pushed, they're still coming, but now it's going to be 35 people and it's on this date'. And so literally just being able to say, ‘Ok, we've got you'...” - Bega Metzner Follow the Destination Marketing Podcast on social media: Instagram Twitter YouTube TikTok Do you want to be featured on the show? In the later months of 1995, 28-year-old Jayne Mansfield found herself in need of an obstetrician. She was pregnant with her first baby and, as most first-time mums do, she put her trust in the medical professional her GP had referred her to - a doctor named Graeme Reeves at The Hills Hospital in Sydney's Baulkham Hills. Throughout her pregnancy care, Jayne felt there was something not quite right about her doctor, but it wasn't anything specific, nothing she could really put her finger on. And as far as she knew she was receiving expert care… who was she to question the methods of a doctor with the relevant qualifications and over a decade of experience? In 1996, Jayne delivered her bouncing baby boy, and the unnerving memories of her obstetrician's strange behaviours quickly disappeared in the busy haze of new parenthood. It would be years before she saw his face again, this time it was on the TV during the news, the words The Butcher Of Bega emblazoned under his image.  THE END BITS Subscribe to Mamamia CREDITS Guest: Jayne Mansfield Host: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Gia Moylan Guest Booking: Cassie Merritt Audio Producer: Scott Stronach GET IN TOUCH: Feedback? In 2011 gynaecologist Graeme Stephen Reeves was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on one of his patients. A case that was just one of many allegations of heinous offences against his female patients, that dated back nearly two decades.  Claims of assaults, molestation and mutilation plagued his career from the 90s, and in 1997 the NSW medical board banning Reeves from practising obstetrics. Despite that, he took a job in 2001 as a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist for the Greater Southern Area Health Service, working unregistered in Bega and Pambula.  When he was finally struck off the medical register in 2004, a trail of traumatised women were left in his wake, most too embarrassed or mortified to tell their stories. But the ones that did pushed for reform, so that no other women would ever go through what they had.  THE END BITS Subscribe to Mamamia CREDITS Guest: Margaret Cunneen Host: Claire Murphy Executive Producer: Gia Moylan Guest Booking: Cassie Merritt Audio Producer: Scott Stronach GET IN TOUCH: Feedback?
