Brian Coghlan is laid back, an asset he was able to use in his workplace. As a prison officer, he quickly learnt that being seen as a good guy around bad people was the key to life behind bars. For 26 years at Port Phillip Prison, he dealt with the worst society had to offer – sex offenders, serial killers and manipulative mass murderers who knew they were destined to die in jail.He spent most of those years working in the top-level protection unit that housed the likes of Peter Dupas, Julian Knight, Raymond "Mr Stinky" Edmunds and the Bega schoolgirl killers.Coghlan decided very early to deal with each inmate on the basis of how they behaved in jail, not what they did to get there. In this episode, he talks to John Silvester about the tricks to surviving in jail, as an inmate and as a prison officer, and his unique insight into some of the country’s worst inmates. There are leaders who hold the seat. And then there are leaders who transform everything they touch. Alexis George walked into AMP in August 2021 at one of the most challenging moments in the company's 176 year history. On the eve of her retirement as CEO, she sat down with us for this International Women's Day special to reflect on a career that has taken her from a small country town in Bega to the top of one of Australia's most iconic financial institutions. She talks about growing up with parents who didn't have money but a mother who never once wavered in her belief that university was non-negotiable. She shares what it felt like to land in Prague as an Australian woman leading a business where nobody had ever seen anything like her. And she is honest about the moment her own daughter looked at her and said "Mum, it's not the glass ceiling anymore. It's the glass cliff." She talks about what it actually takes to back yourself when the opportunity makes you sick in the stomach, why she is brutally focused on only doing the things only she can do, and what she is proudest of after five years rebuilding a culture where people are no longer embarrassed to say where they work. Alexis also has something to say to every woman who has been told she can't have it all. Spoiler, she thinks that's garbage. This one is special. We hope you love it as much as we do. ----------------------- Craving inspiration? Face lucruri minunate. De la an la an, Federația Română de Automobilism Sportiv crește tot mai mult”.

Gill and I have been meaning to walk the Mount Dromedary Summit Trail, also know as Gulaga located between the coastal towns of Narooma and Bega. While easy to navigate this walk certainly gets the heart rate pumping being almost all uphill from start to the destination point at the summit before making your way back down. We didn't have any preconceptions about this walk but came away surprised at the solitude we found on this trail even with coming across a number of other hikers. In this podcast episode we bring you a series of on trail recordings to give you an idea of what to expect and offer suggestions for how to get the best out of this walk. www.australianhiker.com.au Australian Hiker can also be found on our various social media platforms Australian Hiker Facebook Australian Hiker Instagram Australian Hiker Twitter Australian Hiker Threads Australian Hiker Youtube
Consideration of and care for those in need—especially those “at our gate,” the folks we actually see and know about—isn't just a nice add-on to stewardship, it's the heart of it. Scripture reminds us that hoarding stuff doesn't make us safe, it just makes our garages hard to walk through. In fact, sharing what we've been given is how we loosen wealth's chokehold before it tightens like last year's skinny jeans. And here's the Good News: it's not on us to muscle our way out of greed's grip. The one whom death could not hold—Jesus, risen from the dead— meets us right in our clinging and frees us, so our hands can open, not just to drop our offerings in the plate, but to receive life, joy, and maybe even a casserole at the church potluck.Reading: 1 Timothy 6:6-19, Psalm 146 and Luke 15:1-10

Margaret Cunneen SC was one of Australia’s top Crown Prosecutors, renowned for securing convictions against some of the country’s most notorious criminals, including the Butcher of Bega and Robert “Dolly” Dunn. She also led the prosecution of the Skaf gang rapes in 2000, where brothers Bilal and Mohammed Skaf orchestrated a series of brutal, ethnically motivated sex crimes. Las Catalinas might be the most beautiful town built in the 21st century. And my guest today, Sara Bega, has stewarded its evolution as Town Architect for a decade. Las Catalinas is a car-free, kid-friendly, multi-generational community in Costa Rica. Their goal is to create a pedestrian-first environment that maximizes kid freedom and allows for independent exploration and discovery. The town is built on 20% of the 1200-acre site, with a mix of houses, flats, hotels, and shops. We discuss Sara's professional journey, and the principles and practices behind developing such a stunningly beautiful and human neighborhood that serves as an inspiration and example for what is possible today. If you do anything today, just click on this link so you can see the town. It stands as a testament to the beauty humans can cultivate when they set their mind to it: Beach Town in Guanacaste, Costa Rica | Las Catalinas (lascatalinascr.com) TAKEAWAYS Creating a car-free, kid-friendly community allows for independent exploration and fosters curiosity and connection with nature. A pedestrian-first environment benefits not only children but also adults and families, creating a sense of community and connection. Las Catalinas is a successful example of a car-free community, with a mix of houses, flats, hotels, and shops built on a 1200-acre site. The community achieves car-free living through walkability, valet services, and emergency vehicle access. The town architect's role is to oversee the design and planning of the community, ensuring a balance between privacy, walkability, and optimized views. Creating a sustainable and adaptable community requires prioritizing human experience and connection. Designing a walkable town with a mix of residential and commercial spaces fosters a sense of community. The legal structure of a town should allow for flexibility and adaptability over time. Trust in human intelligence and the ability to solve problems is crucial for the success of a community. Creating a sense of place involves considering the local climate, using natural materials, and designing for the long term.
