Episode Description: “Would you recognize the daughter of the King of Pop if she was dancing right next to you?”
Playlist;OTIS BLACKWELL “Let the daddy hold you”LITTLE WILLIE JOHN “Fever”ELVIS PRESLEY “Don’t be cruel”ELVIS PRESLEY “Return to sender”ELVIS PRESLEY “Make me know it”KRIS KRISTOFFERSON “All shook up”JERRY LEE LEWIS “Let’s talk about us”JERRY LEE LEWIS “Great balls of fire”FRANK BLACK and THE STAX PISTOLS “Breahless”THE QUEEN (DINAH WASHINGTON) “Honky Tonk”DEE CLARK “Hey Little Girl”THE WHO “Daddy Rolling Stone”THE FIVE KEYS “My pigeon’s gone”CLIFF RICHARD and THE SHADOWS “Nine times out of ten”DEL SHANNON “Handy man”JOHNNY RESTIVO “The shape I’m in”MAHALIA JACKSON “For my good fortune”SOLOMON BURKE “Home in your heart”BEN E. The duo opens up about their songwriting process, the personal stories woven into their lyrics, and how live performance fuels their artistry. From collaborations with Nashville heavy-hitters to their plans for an overseas tour, this episode is packed with laughs, harmonies, and a glimpse into what's next for one of country's most promising new acts. Country music is in the midst of a grand renaissance. The genre - whose popularity was previously confined to the American South - is now climbing the charts, grabbing the attention of Gen Z audiences, and changing the perception of what it means to be a country listener. Streaming of the genre in the US rose by nearly 110% in the five years to 2024. And it's taking over markets all around the world. In the UK, the genre more than doubled its share of the singles market in two years. And Australia is now the third largest country music market globally. From ‘music city' - Nashville, Tennessee - we speak to artists and industry leaders to better understand where the country music boom came from, and where it's headed this year. Ryan and Jeremy Binkley, owners and operators of the Honky Tonk STL, join Chris and Amy to talk about the impending closure of the country music bar. Episode two of On The Record begins exactly where great podcasts are born: with the crushing realisation that nothing has been recorded. After a brief collective sigh (and a generous decision to “power through”), Michael Mackenzie, Brian Wise and guest Nick Corr regroup and press on—braver, wiser, and still dangerously unsupervised. What follows is a gloriously eclectic ramble through: A shamelessly persuasive plug for Rhythms Magazine, which somehow doubles as relationship advice A sold-out theatre talk about fungi, proving that mushrooms now draw bigger crowds than indie bands A deep dive into Pluribus, the Apple TV series that turns hive minds into a philosophical Rorschach test (Michael finds it calming; Brian finds it terrifying) The long-awaited final album from Chris Bailey of The Saints, hailed as a dignified, and moving farewell Lucinda Williams, political defiance, and why some albums are necessary whether America's ready or not A prolonged, reverent detour into Tom Waits, including birthdays, movies, glitter-filled pockets, and the universal agreement that everyone would still fly overseas to see him Talking Heads nostalgia, Bluesfest ticket shock, and the unsettling concept of “cover bands with original members” The episode wraps with movies (Dead of Winter, Train Dreams), tears shed in unexpected places, and the firm belief that art about love, loss, and grief is best discussed at length—preferably after checking the record button. On The Record is a podcast where culture is taken seriously, and tangents are treated as the main event. Two of the most polarizing figures in sports entertainment sat down for an UNFILTERED interview. The Honky Tonk Man and Missy Hyatt go no questions barred as they discuss their time in the business as well as legendary names and the current (2010) stat of pro wrestling. We start off talking about Bret Hart's seemingly unlikely return to WWE which sparks the conversation about how burnt bridges can be repaired. Then the two touch on the Iron Sheik and his durability regarding his fast lifestyle. Addressed is also Jim Ross' firing from WWE and why Honky Tonk feels JR shouldn't have sour grapes considering his backstabbing ways while he was in WWE Management. The video concludes with some advice the two offered TNA. Stream Full Interviews Ad-Free

Katie from Girls in Low Places drops in this week and brings a whole different angle on country music — including what it’s like being a fan (and a voice) for the genre in the UK. She and Bobby get into how country is landing overseas, what surprised her most once she got closer to the scene, and why some artists feel bigger across the pond than they do back home. They also rewind to a viral Riley Green moment that blew up fast and didn’t exactly go the way she expected, plus the story behind why she flashed Tucker Wetmore — yes, that happened, and yes, there’s context. From there it turns into a no-filter hang about “industry plants,” the weird stuff fans argue about online, and what makes a honky tonk feel like a honky tonk no matter what country you’re in. Expect a wild conversation that goes way past country — all the way to the Spice Girls Check out Girls In Low Places Podcast on YouTube Follow on Instagram: @TheBobbyCast Follow on TikTok: @TheBobbyCast Watch this Episode on Youtube See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A fictional town can set a songwriter free. That's the spark behind Jennyville, the creative sandbox where Jenny Tolman learned to ignore the lanes, chase characters, and write past the limits of “radio safe.” From that sandbox came a career shaped by range: the gut-punch of a military tribute that found its moment and the dance-floor joy of a Texas two-step anthem. We go deep on Lonely In The Lone Star, co-written with Bill White and Dave Brainerd. What started as a cowboy title became a piercing story of loss through Dave's veteran lens, written before the Afghanistan withdrawal and later embraced by grieving families. Jenny shares how a nudge to post a demo led to a memorial performance in Jackson, proceeds donated to the thirteen families, and a number-one moment powered by empathy, not hype. Then we flip the coin and step into I Know Some Cowboys, born from first tours across Texas, chivalry on the dance floor, and playful texts to Dave that turned into a sing-along hook. It's proof that country's heart holds sorrow and celebration with equal honesty. We also pull back the curtain on The Road, Taylor Sheridan's series featuring Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, and Gretchen Wilson. Jenny talks about the shock of leaving her toddler, finding real independence in empty hotel rooms, and getting a nightly masterclass side stage. The show's commitment to authenticity over drama let the artists' experience—and the music—take center stage. Finally, we head to Jackson Hole for Cowgirls at the Cowboy, the women-driven festival Jenny curates at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. The way new music comes to Alt.Latino World Headquarters says a lot about our slight age difference. I still get CDs in the mail, with an occasional music file sent via email. Ana is constantly playing me audio files she gets vial email or texts from her new music sources, very rarely on CD. So while we were busy putting the finishing touches on our fist annual El Tiny takeover of the Tiny Desk Concert series, our mail piled up. Which means we had lots to choose from for this week's new music episode. There's bound to be something that catches your ear and makes you think: 'How did I live without that in my life?"Featured artists and songs: - Making Movies, “La Marea” ft. “There ain’t no honky tonks in Philadelphia,” laments Jessica Pyrdsa AKA Datura. The latest single from the Lockhart-based artist’s upcoming album, Saint Cecilia, takes a pivot from her piano-driven, jazz-meets-art-pop sound for this equally cinematic, blues-leaden country hall slow dance that feels like a waltz in all but time signature. A country music nightclub in Kentucky held dark secrets beneath its dance floor --- secrets that began with a brutal decapitation in 1896 and continued to manifest in violent supernatural encounters until the building's demolition in December 2024… but are the ghosts really gone?Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE for the ad-free version: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast: https://weirddarkness.com/surveyIN THIS EPISODE: The building that stood at 44 Licking Pike in Wilder, Kentucky, witnessed more death and violence than most structures see in several lifetimes. From its origins as a slaughterhouse where animal blood drained into a deep well, through decades of mob violence and mysterious deaths, to its final incarnation as Bobby Mackey's Music World --- a honky-tonk where patrons reported being scratched, pushed, and attacked by unseen forces --- this location seemed to attract darkness like a magnet draws iron filings. The building's 45-and-a-half-year run as Bobby Mackey's came to an end on December 6, 2024, when demolition crews reduced the over-100-year-old structure to rubble. But that doesn't necessarily mean the hauntings themselves have ended.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Lead-In00:02:30.463 = Show Open00:03:38.578 = The Headless Woman and Bloody Beginnings00:17:03.072 = The Verdict, The Vow And a Gallows' Curse00:41:20.658 = Exorcism, Evidence, And The Final Haunting00:53:56.668 = Show Close SOURCES AND RESOURCES FROM THE EPISODE…https://weirddarkness.com/bobby-mackeys-pearl-bryan/=====(Over time links may become invalid, disappear, or have different content.
