Will Cooper, our esteemed guest, weaves a captivating narrative of his evolution from a bright-eyed youth, taking his first shots on family land, to his present-day role as a raconteur of the hunt and a steward of the outdoors. His journey through the tapestry of tradition to his current position with GSM Outdoors and HuntStand isn't just a story; it's a legacy that we explore in rich, resonant detail.Understanding the essence of the hunt goes beyond the prey; it's about the choices we make, both in the wild and within the walls of our daily grind. In hopes of shedding some light on this very dense, wildly expensive, and unnecessarily controversial pellet material, I sat down with Adam Moser, the director of product engineering for shotshells at Federal Premium. Federal, after all, was the first major ammo company to offer TSS loads to the mass market. I also caught up with my fanatical turkey hunting buddy Josh Dahlke, the VP of content for HuntStand. Dahlke has witnessed more than 100 turkeys get shot with TSS loads. If anyone can explain the physics behind TSS, it's Moser. If anyone can detail its turkey killing capabilities, it's Dahlke. When I first started hunting whitetails trail cameras, computer programs were hardly even anyone's dream, much less a reality. Maps of your hunting country were usually hand-drawn after walking property, who owned the land next door were learned by knocking on their doors, when deer moved was determined from year's of hunting experience, finding your way around in unfamiliar territory was most often accomplished by using a compass. Serious hunters had much to learn and considerable to remember. With the advent of computers and computer programs and apps, trail cameras and the like, much of what it took hunters years to learn and "store in between their ears", and a whole lot more is now available at their fingertips. This thanks to HuntStand and Brian Murphy. Most of you will remember Brian from his many faithful and excellent years at Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA), but now with HuntStand. Brian with the help of some "computer experts" has come up with fabulous programs that will make you a much better and successful deer hunter regardless of whether your and "old ranger" like me, or someone who in the past few days decided he or she wanted to put quality meals on they and their families dinner table. In this episode Brian brings me and our listeners to a new level of hunting whitetail deer, and learning more from using the new HuntStand app than I did in nearly a lifetime of pursuing America's deer! On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks with Brian Murphy of HuntStand about the new upgrades that come with the Pro Whitetail update. Brian runs through all of the following updates. Whitetail Activity Forecast - Obtain scientifically-based predictions of hourly whitetail movements at the county or even-subcounty level with HuntStand's 7-day Whitetail Activity Forecast. Our proprietary model is informed by decades of research by North America's top deer biologists and incorporates more than a dozen variables with thousands of possible data interactions to provide hunters with the most accurate hour-by-hour predictions of deer movement during the upcoming 7-day period. Whitetail Habitat Map Layer - Using decades of observational data combined with advanced satellite measurements and artificial intelligence, HuntStand's exclusive Whitetail Habitat Map displays an area's suitability for whitetails at a granular monthly level. Perfect for e-scouting and prioritizing new areas to hunt. Nationwide Whitetail Rut Map Layer - HuntStand's Nationwide Rut Map details the peak two-week rut period throughout 98% of the whitetail's range in the United States in an easy-to-use color-coded map layer. Data is included for over 4,240 counties, parishes and other geographic designations with information gathered directly from state wildlife agencies and whitetail biologists. National Aerial Imagery Layer - High resolution aerial imagery from the USDA Farm Services Agency, often more detailed and up to date than other available aerial imagery layers. This layer is updated every 1-2 years on a state-by-state basis as part of the National Agricultural Imagery Program. Monthly Satellite Imagery Layer - Not available in any other mobile app, HuntStand's Monthly Satellite layer provides monthly satellite images, as well as several years of historical data. It's a perfect way to see recent timber clear-cuts, agricultural activity/changes, flooding, fires and burns or snow and ice cover and is pivotal to understanding the current habitat conditions of a potential hunt area. Crop History Layer - Annual crop data across the continental United States showcasing 134 different crops at a granular level. A useful scouting tool, especially in agricultural areas.
