Work-life balance means integrating work and life so that the work we choose to do expresses who we want to be in the world. The DisruptorsWith Liz FarrIngrid Edstrom wants accounting to be not just a more sustainable profession but one that's regenerative. “This idea of sustainability is really operating from the idea that things can continue to perpetuate as they are,” she explains. A firm may be financially sustainable, “but at what cost to our families, to our personal health?” The regenerative approach recognizes “that we've already passed a threshold of harm that needs to be healed,” Edstrom says. “Regenerative accounting is starting to reframe those ideas around 'What does it look like to go about business in a different way that is truly life-supporting for all peoples and our planet, rather than being extractive of our planet and exploitative of our peoples?'" 11 MORE TAKEAWAYS: More Ingrid Edstrom Disruptor Notes  MORE: Disruptors  MORE CPA TRENDLINES PODCASTS and VIDEOS: Chris Hervochon: Be the Leader You Want to Work For | Caleb Jenkins: Firm Growth Requires Owners to Shift Roles |Ira Rosenbloom: Don't Merge for the Money | Adam Lean: Get Out of the Accountant's Trap | Geraldine Carter: Charging More is Better for Your Clients | Vimal Bava: When Working Smarter, Not Harder, Is the Only Option | SEE THEM ALL here.

My guest Ingrid Edstrom founded the "Accounting Alchemy Network," and in this episode, we talk accounting, and we talk alchemy. "Alchemy" as in transformation. Practical transformation, which of course is necessary in this great turning toward a life-sustaining society, along with transformation in the ways we think, and the ways we ask questions. These are necessary too.Listen in to hear us talk about how the accounting profession can change the world, Ingrid's journey with giving "rights of nature" to the land she calls home, how we change the way we think, finding your zone of genius in your work and playand more! It was great fun and so inspiring to talk with Ingrid. She has such a sharp and creative mind, and a powerful drive in her big heart.More about Ingrid:Ingrid Edstrom is a Certified Business Coach through the Woodard Institute, a Certified PQ Mental Fitness Coach through Positive Intelligence, and a certified Working Genius consultant. She is also working with her local chapter of the Pachamama Alliance and Oregon Water League to develop rights of nature for the Rogue River and surrounding local watershed, and working to use some of the education from that experience to develop rights of nature for the 2 acres she stewards where she grows most of her own food, including goats and chix. When Ingrid is not actively working to heal the world, she is usually playing Irish music, doing a Joe Dispenza meditation, or having a deep conversation about quantum physics & chaos magick. Ingrid Edstrom is a total nerd with a hungry mind and a passion for helping others be their best selves in service to our beautiful world. Her superpowers are manifestation and positive change, even (especially) when change is scary. Why it is crucial to follow your passion and have a win-win mindset to find success. Why you should listen to your gut and continually develop your business. Recognizing that your way may be the best way for you. Why you should keep your business and personal bank accounts separate. How to choose an accounting platform. What double-entry bookkeeping is. Misconceptions surrounding money, the value we give it, and the pursuit of money for happiness. Key takeaways:   Don’t let other people’s ideas influence what you are doing. Who do you want to work with? If you answered, “EVERYONE.” That could likely cost you. Many bookkeepers don't have a clear niche of clients they focus on and, as a result, they likely accept any new customers that walk through the door. Unfortunately, that thinking can attract potentially bad clients who are not a fit. By not taking the time to identify what type of client would be ideal from a financial and personality standpoint, accepting “EVERYONE” can lead to increased headaches, stress and payment issues. It doesn't have to be this way. Our guest, Ingrid Edstrom pointed out that in 2015, her bookkeeping company, Polymath, had 96 clients, but after finding a profitable niche, it now serves only 30, but it makes double the money. Once you figure out what core group of customers work best for you, it can be an absolute game-changer in your bookkeeping business. During this fun and inspiring interview, you'll learn... Why you should focus on an industry niche that you want to work with and that can pay you well What questions to ask yourself to determine your ideal niche clients To not be afraid to refer potential clients who aren't a fit to other bookkeepers To find out more about Ingrid, visit https://www.thesuccessfulbookkeeper.com.

In this episode, we talk about how if we act like we’re boring then how can we expect our clients not to think of us the same way? And forget about trying to attract and retain top talent if your firm thinks this way. Ingrid refers to it as “finding your inner unicorn”, your own set of passions that makes you unique. Ingrid is the creator of the Ask A Bookkeeper puppet show, founder of the Southern Oregon Bookkeepers Association, and leader of the Southern Oregon Woodard Group. Ingrid started Polymath in 2008, and jumped right into being a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor at that time.
