In a society pushing most planetary boundaries, how can venture capital step in and scale the technologies we need to change the world? That's the power behind Planet A Ventures, led by environmental advocate and policymaker Lena Thiede.Lena is a co-founding partner of Planet A — a cutting-edge green tech venture capital fund that only invests in European startups with a proven and significant positive impact on the environment. They've already hit an important milestone, raising an impressive €160 million in 2023 that has been put into action for backing and scaling startups with groundbreaking green technologies in development. What's truly unique about Planet A Ventures is that they're the only early-stage VC with an in-house science team dedicated to conducting rigorous lifecycle assessments before investing, which Lena leads. This means they place the highest value on impact as the primary screening metric, guaranteeing significant positive outcomes for climate, biodiversity, and beyond.Lena is a prominent figure in environmental research and policy, thanks to her substantial background in climate science and over 11 years of experience as a senior government official at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. She knew early on in her childhood that she wanted to be involved in political science and environmental protection, a desire that landed her in government programs in Tanzania and East Africa, focusing on biodiversity and water resource monitoring and evaluation. Lena has also done environmental research for the German Advisory Council on Global Change, OECD, GIZ, and the Ecologic Institute. She also advises the EXIST Program of the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, promoting more science-based startups.Tune in to hear all the fascinating examples of science-based impact investing that Lena shares, along with how Planet A is transforming the landscape of sustainable venture capital.—About the SRI 360° Podcast: The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing. This week's guest is Lori Garver, former Deputy Administrator for NASA & author of Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age, describing how she drove the commercial space program with Elon Musk against the wishes of Senators on both sides of the House, whilst in a misogynistic, male-dominated NASA culture. The last two years have been challenging for us all. Lori increased her activist nature as much as possible to help drive to a better future. One of the ways she did this, was write a memoir that uses her career at NASA to help light a path to a better future for us all.As she outlines in the book, when she left home and went to college, she started to consider how she could best impact the world. She worked for John Glenn on his Presidential Campaign, which is what got her into space. The Challenger and Columbia accidents were both pain-points that showed her that human spaceflight had gotten off-track. The government led system was rewarding contractors and congress more interested in their own agenda, than true progress.Out of these literal ashes, she helped craft NASA policies and programs to reduce the cost of space transportation and make utilizing space for broad and valuable purposes more accessible. As a woman who has reached the one of highest echelons of NASA, being a role model to others is an important aspect of her later career. She began a Fellowship for collegiate women and gender minorities, which now offers 50 paid summer internships annually - with over 200 alumni currently. Two years ago, they expanded this to include another Fellowship to give even more opportunities Black college students. She's also started a program called Earthrise Alliance, which is dedicated to fully utilizing satellite data to address climate change. We went to space over 50 years ago, and the most important thing we learned is about our home planet, Earth. What we have learned about our changing climate from space, has allowed us to understand what is happening and how to adopt ways to adapt and reverse the damage from humanity's dependence on greenhouse gas emissions. Courage can mean a lot of things, but in her life, it means standing up for what you believe in, even when it is not popular. Taking a position you know is right, instead of doing things to advance your own career was necessary to advance our efforts in space, which is ultimately critical to our survival here on earth and beyond. Thank you so much Lori for giving us a bird's eye view on the world and showing us how continued space exploration will give invaluable insights into how to protect our planet, and give us a future worth fighting for. Thanks also for showing us the fragility of our beautiful blue planet and reminding us to do all we can to conserve our oasis that hangs like a miracle in the vastness of the Universe. You can find our more about Lori's work on https://www.lorigarver.com/ and follow her on Linkedin @lorigarver Join Lou on LinkedinFollow her @brave_newgirl on Instagram and get her books Brave New Girl- How to be Fearless, FEAR LESS and her Internationally Bestselling book DARE TO SHARE on Amazon or Waterstones or Barnes & Noble. In this episode of weekly gupshup, Sreepriya Sridharan & Piyush Dhawan bring to you a circular business model from the wine industry. What if we tell you that your wine bottle can fit through a letter box? Yes, you read it right! Say hello to the next age packaging by Garcon Wines who have innovated a sustainable wine packaging solution. In 2017, they won the Best New Beverage Concept Award at the World Beverage Innovation Awards and was a Diamond Finalist in the awards for Packaging Innovation the following year! So what do they do different? Garcon Wines introduced a customized wine package that could accommodate ten of its bottles in the same space as four conventional ones. This allows 1040 bottles to be stored in a standard container pallet, compared to 456 standard sized bottles, reducing the environmental footprint and cost for transport and handling by around 60%. Flat wine bottles are a stand out design especially when those bottles are made from recycled plastic. To us their product speaks volumes about their attention to detail around a green and efficient supply chain. Today in the vast world of climate science, relatively little attention has been paid to the wine industry's carbon footprint. Tell me honestly, did you ever think about this before? We need to remind ourselves that wine is an agricultural product. Wine grapes are extremely sensitive to climate and this is what makes its taste so exquisite! But this sensitivity makes it equally vulnerable to climate change. You know a report by Spanish company Grupo ARCE found that the average bottle of wine releases about 1.28 kilograms of carbon into the atmosphere over its lifetime. For some of you, this number might seem small, however In the year 2018, global wine production rose to near-record highs, reaching a harvest of 292.3 million hectoliters that's more than 7.7 billion gallons. Water is an essential raw material in addition to grapes, fruits and wood used for making barrels. It is clear how this industry is heavily dependent on natural resources and therefore building in circular business models to improve product efficiency becomes crucial. Probing Question : Did you know that climate change is rapidly altering wine as we know it? Tune into the episode to dive deeper into their solution. It was the catalyst and vehicle for uniting a sixteen generation Japanese tea master family (Handa) with a Western family (Andrews) whose ties in Japan go back four generations. The name DōMatcha® , meaning "The Way or Journey of Matcha" signifies the path that both families have taken to get to where we are today…..producing the very best Matcha the market has to offer. A decade ago this exotic green tea was virtually unknown outside of Japan. In North America today DōMatcha® is the number one Matcha brand and has a huge consumer base enjoying its taste, experience and many health benefits. Doug has a PhD in Biology and we spend much of our conversation talking about how he has helped power plants maintain safe environments for wildlife. We also talk about his love for "Big, Bold, Red Wines" and we talk about a few of our favorite vineyards in the finger lakes region. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Doug as much as I did. Enjoy a glass of your favorite wine and enjoy the show! The Wine, Wineries, and Food Hosmer Winery Hosmer Winery is a fully functioning estate winery, everything from planting and growing the grapes, to picking, pressing and bottling is done on site. As a farm, we cultivate 70 acres of grapes with over 14 varieties and growing. Our belief in wine making and grape growing are parallel and continuing and we strive to maintain preservation of the land and the fruit form vine to table. Our passion for what we do is exemplified through the creation of our memorable wines. McGregor Vineyard The McGregor family invites you to enjoy a casual, seated tasting of estate wines produced from our half-century-old vineyards. Our winery is hidden on a hillside just one mile above the eastern shore of Keuka Lake. The Elf in the Oak Casual atmosphere with an outstanding view from the deck! This hidden gem is quite small, with only a few tables inside, and a few on the deck. Get a table on the deck for an outstanding view. The lunch selections were standard fare with a foodie twist...very tasty! There's an ice cream stand outside as well for those with a sweet tooth and if you have any room left after the big lunch. This week on “Rebel Hearts”: Kristie speaks with Nil Zacharias, co-founder of One Green Planet, the largest digital media platform focused on food and sustainability. He is also the host of the popular weekly podcast "#EatForThePlanet with Nil Zacharias” and co-author of the book "Eat For The Planet". Nil started his career as a media and technology lawyer and worked for over a decade in the digital media and online advertising space in various business and operational roles prior to founding One Green Planet. In this interview we address the question that Nil asks on his weekly podcast: how can we eat in a way that nourishes us without starving the planet? Nil shares how he discovered the environmental impact our food choices have and how that discovery led him to going plant based. Nil educates us on how the way we currently eat on is not sustainable. We discuss how eating animal products contributes to climate change, deforestation and talk about the immense amount of water usage that occurs during meat and cheese production.   Each and every single one of us has the power to create environmental change. It starts with looking at our own food choices, empowering others to eat a plant based diet and sharing that knowledge.   To Quote Nil: "The real battle for the future of the planet - and the future of the human race- is being fought on your plates, multiple times a day, with every food choice you make.”

Karina is the producer genius that has sat behind some of my favourite shows and films over the years, from hard hitting pieces like ‘Go Back to Where You Came From’ – a show that quite literally had the entire of Australia talking and reflecting on how we treat so called ‘boat people’ as was the rhetoric at the time, to hilarious shows like Luke Warm Sex which shone a light on how we approach learning about intimacy. There’s no doubt that her career is a remarkable one, but the particular angle I wanted to take with this conversation was around, not just crafting a wonderful story, whether that’s following the Masai tribe in Africa or tackling the ancient art of spider wrestling in Japan (and don’t worry, you’ll hear about that in a minute) but actually how you go about creating a piece of story telling that actually provokes meaningful change. This is a powerful conversation for anyone who has identified an injustice, and wants to cause people to rise up, and do something about it, and if you do enjoy this episode and want to see more of Karina's awesome work then head down to your local cinema on May 30th and check of advanced screenings of her latest masterpiece, Blue - https://au.demand.film/blue/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

How do we save our planet? By taking responsibility! In this episode, you’ll hear about the harmful effects of plastic and what each of us can do to help. Our Guest: The nonprofit 5 Gyres Institute has been fighting plastic ocean pollution since 2009. Beginning in 2010, 5 Gyres began a series of scientific firsts by researching plastic in all five subtropical gyres, as well as the Great Lakes and Antarctica. In 2014, the organization convened eight scientists around the world to publish the first global estimate of plastic pollution in our ocean: 5.25 trillion particles weighing in at 270,000 tons of “plastic smog” worldwide. 5 Gyres’ paper on plastic microbead pollution in the Great Lakes inspired a two-year collaborative campaign that culminated in a federal ban on microbeads, which President Obama signed into law in 2015. In 2016, 5 Gyres embarked on its 17th expedition—this time to research microplastics and nanoplastics in the Arctic Circle. More information is at www.5gyres.org.
