Earth Sunday/Third Sunday of Easter April 19, 2026 Faith Okemos I Peter 1:17-23, Psalm 104, Romans 8:18-27, Luke 24:13-35   Because the World Is About to Turn   My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great, and my spirit sings of the wondrous things that you bring to the ones who wait.  You fixed your sight on your servant's plight, and my weakness you did not spurn, so from east to west shall my name be blest. Could the world be about to turn?    My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn.  Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn.   From the halls of power to the fortress tower, not a stone will be left on stone.  Let the king beware for your justice tears every tyrant from his throne.  The hungry poor shall weep no more, for the food they can never earn; there are tables spread, every mouth be fed, for the world is about to turn…                                                  ELW 723   When Victor Orban, the authoritarian prime minister of Hungary, was soundly defeated a week ago today, it did seem another sign that our world was about to turn.  Increasingly throughout the world more and more nations have been led by far-right dictators.  They and their cronies have amassed for themselves enormous wealth at the expense of the health and well-being of those citizens they were elected to lead and of the Earth itself.  But on this Earth Sunday 2026, we see signs of hope, signs of resurrection that God is birthing in the hearts and actions of millions of people throughout the world, including millions in our own country…Signs of hope and resurrection through the forthright words of religious leaders like our own Bishop Julie and like Pope Leo.   Could it be that the world is about to turn?  I think of all the money given in recent weeks (including from us) to fully fund the purchase and installation of a solar array, a project co-sponsored by Michigan Interfaith Power and Light for a Habitat for Humanity home near Sparrow Hospital, now a home for adults with autism and for their support staff, a home that will receive much of its power directly from the sun.      This "great turning" looks like the 900 people (including several of us from Faith) who journeyed from Pilgrim Congregational Church on Pennsylvania Ave. to the Capitol four Sundays ago, pledging anew to see Jesus in feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and welcoming the stranger.     In a book titled Active Hope, the authors share this poem about grace and trust and courage in a world about to turn:  When you act on behalf of something greater than yourself, you begin to feel it acting through you with a power greater than you own. This is grace. Today, as we take risks for the something greater than our separate, individual lives, we are feeling graced by other beings and by Earth itself. Those with whom and on whose behalf we act give us strength and eloquence and staying power we didn't know we had. We just need to practice knowing that and remembering that we are sustained by each other in the web of life.  Our true power comes as a gift, like grace, because in truth it is sustained by others. If we practice drawing on the wisdom and beauty and strengths of our fellow humans and our fellow species, we can go into any situation and trust that the courage and intelligence required will be supplied.      In our beautiful gospel for today (a favorite of Pastor Megan's), Jesus our risen Lord and a "fellow human," walks with Cleopas and another disciple (likely his wife, one of the Mary's who followed Jesus on his earthly journey), albeit incognito, unrecognized… until in their home Jesus takes and blesses and breaks and gives them the bread at supper in their home.    A word I've been living with all this past week is a Greek word, panentheism, that literally means "all in God, God in all."  I thought of these words in Ephesians 4: There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.   Panentheism, all in God, God in all.  For me this radically changes everything and everyone I see.  When I look at Ray and Tabitha and each of you… and when I look at the daffodils in our backyard, or when I look at the food and juice or coffee I will drink after worship, I see God, I see Jesus!   I saw God when I was with Ledith on Thursday evening.  Ledith, long-time member of Faith and beloved child of God, is now at the precipice of her death.  When we softly sang together a verse of "Holy, Holy, Holy" and of "Beautiful Savior" and her favorite, all the verses of "How Great Thou Art," I saw God.   What a difference it makes when you and I look at any and all of the peoples and creatures of the Earth, all the vast and varied combinations of elements and molecules that comprise our common home.  Above all, through all, and in all is our crucified and risen Lord and God.  How could we not cherish and love and respect all of it?  How could we not think twice about trashing or misusing or exploiting any of it when we know that Jesus is in it?   So important that together we think and celebrate that Greek word, panentheism, all in God, God in all, God in everything.   But so important too that we mourn creation's brokenness together with God and with each other… If we felt the pain of loss each time an ecosystem was destroyed, a species wiped out, or a child killed by war or starvation, we wouldn't be able to continue living the way we do.  It would tear us apart inside…By speaking our concerns and giving voice to our feelings [to each other], we make them more visible not just to others but also to ourselves.  The more we draw issues into the open, the more inclined we become to tackle them…Rather than attempting to fix feelings of distress, we accept their validity and significance.  Doing this is in itself an act for the Great Turning. Active Hope, page 77   And these words from Archbishop Desmond Tutu: [Jesus'] supreme work is to reconcile us to God and to one another and, indeed, to all of God's creation.  It is possible to have a new kind of world where there will be more compassion, more gentleness, more caring, more laughter, more joy for all of God's creation, because that is God's dream.  And God says, "Help me. Help me, help me realize my dream."   And from Jim Antel, a public theologian and pastor in the United Church of Christ:  God is calling all of us to unleash our imaginations, unmuzzle our mouths, unbind our hands, unshackle our feet, and open our wallets.  Each of us must use our unique God-given gifts to hasten the day when each human heart is governed not by grief but by hope…not by selfishness but by sharing.  Yes—God still has a dream…As we live into God's dream, we will rediscover who we truly are and all of creation will be singing.                      Climate Church, Climate World,  pages 168-169   Because the world is about to turn… St. Peter writes, Make your minds ready for action…   Put your hope in nothing but the grace that will be given when Jesus Christ is revealed.  Be children of obedience…It is through Christ that you are believers in God, the God who raised Jesus from the dead into glory…Therefore, love one another constantly, from the heart.  [I Peter 1:13,21-22] By the grace and great mercy of God we are born anew every day into a living hope because Jesus lives "above all and through all and in all."  Jesus walks with us.  Everything changes when you and I see him in every thing and every one.  Therefore, love one another constantly, from the depths of your hearts.   Daniel Erlander in a little book entitled Baptized, We Live, writes, "The ruler of the universe hides himself in the common, in the stuff of this earth.  God lives in creation; he lives in all… Here is God… in the home, in the forest, in the face of a child, in the sunset, in human love, in the enemy, in the mountains, in the cry of the poor, in the sea, in the sharing of food,  in the prison, in the sunshine, in the hospital, in the rain, in the aged, in governments, in the dying, in the air, in the broken home, in the stranger, in outer space, in the third world, in death."    Daniel writes:  Because of Jesus, we see God in all, weeping where there is pain and alienation, rejoicing where there is wholeness and love.     So, because God in Jesus is with and in us and all of creation, albeit often incognito as on the road to Emmaus, we may dare to believe that the world is about to turn, that other powerful autocrats and dictators besides Prime Minister Orban will soon be brought low.  We can live with hope that soon compassion and respect and a just peace will rise up, albeit imperfectly, in the Middle East, in Eastern Europe, in Africa, and, yes, in our own country.   Imagine that one day, maybe 50 or 60 years from now, our descendants asked us three questions about when in our day there was a great turning: 1.    "Ancestor, I hear stories about the period you are living in, with wars and preparations for wars, with some people absurdly rich while huge numbers are starving and homeless, with poisons in the seas and soil and air, and with the dying of many species.  We are still experiencing the effects of all that.  What was it like for you to live with this knowledge?" 2.    "Ancestor, we have songs and stories that tell of what you and your friends did back then for the Great Turning… You must have felt lonely and confused at times, especially at the beginning.  What were some of the first steps you took?" 3.    "Ancestor, I know you didn't stop with those first actions on behalf of life on Earth.  Where did you find the strength to continue working so hard, despite all the obstacles and discouragement?"                                          Active Hope, page 155   Let us sing "God Bestows on Every Sense," a song of hope and of "signs of what the earth will be."   Amen.

So he got to know Joanna and Fran as friends and neighbors. In 1991, he first trained in her approach, later called "The Work That Reconnects" and offered this work in different venues. Over the years, they have stayed friends and colleagues, and sometimes taught together. In this talk, Donald gives a sense of the trajectory of Joanna's life and work, showing photos of Joanna spanning her life-time and interspersing stories of training with Joanna and using her practices and perspectives in his own teaching. This rich, gorgeous conversation will fill your soul. The singular and beloved Joanna Macy died at home at the age of 96 on July 20, 2025. She has left an immense legacy of beauty and wisdom and courage to sustain us. A Buddhist teacher, ecological philosopher, and Rilke translator, she taught and embodied a wild love for the world. What follows is the second and final conversation Krista had with Joanna, together with Joanna's friend, psychologist and fellow Rilke translator Anita Barrows, in 2021. Joanna and Anita had just published a new translation of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet. At the turn of the last tumultuous century, Rilke was prescient in realizing that the world as he'd known it was passing away. Joanna's adventurous life and vision took shape in the crucibles of the history that then unfolded. I've been (earnestly) taking courses, workshops and seminars these last few years, while producing over 300 podcasts about art and ecology, as my way of helping future generations prepare for what we are leaving them. My most recent learning and unlearning exercise is Surviving the Future: The Deeper Dive 2025, a 10 week course inspired by the work of British ecologist David Fleming. I wrote about the first three weeks of the course in prepare, bend, sustain posting (also available in audio). So this is part 2 of 2. Surviving the Future has been very influential in my life. I took it while I was on break from my conscient podcast and it has helped figure out what to do next, which I outline in a conscient rethink (also available in audio).My key research questions are :What needs to be said ? (what is content that is not being heard)Who needs to say it ? (who are the right person(s) to tell the story or explain the issue)Who wants to hear it ? (who is the audience and needs to hear it)How does it help? (eg people who are already overwhelmed: how can a podcast help move things forward)So what was Surviving the Future like? It was dense and wonderfully curated by Shaun Chamberlin and others. Here's an example. On Monday February 24, 2025, our special guests were the dynamic mother/daughter duo Vanessa and Gina Andreotti, both members of the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures (GTDF) collective.  I often refer to the GTDF's work in my learnings.The session centered around Burnout From Humans : A Little Book About AI That Is Not Really About AI:a playful reflection on complexity, connection, and the future of human-AI relationships. Co-authored by an emergent intelligence and a human researcher, this work explores the tangled dynamics of humanity's relationship with artificial intelligence, Earth, and itself.It was an engaging and challenging session about AI from indigenous and decolonial perspectives. After our exchange, Vanessa and the GTDF collective published an Open letter to the participants of the Surviving the Future program, which I was a part of. They offered feedback and learnings from our conversation, such as the distinction between critique and jurisdiction and how the architecture of power often remains invisible to those who have historically and systemically benefited from it.Benefactors like myself. The session was difficult but empowering. Looking into the mirror like that is when I realized that Surviving the Future was also about knowing and surviving myself, understanding myself and overcoming, as Vanessa Andretotti notes, the ‘limits that modernity continuously tries to impose'.We certainly faced some of those limitations. This excerpt from the February 24th letter resonates and haunts me :The world as we have known it is unraveling. Both the dominant frameworks and those once seen as transgressive are failing to hold. This collapse is not just structural; it is psychological. The infrastructures that stabilized people within modernity—its myths, its promises, its assurances, its rhythms of control—are breaking apart. The result will not be gentle. We must prepare for a long, messy, species-wide existential meltdown.How does one prepare for a long, messy, species-wide existential meltdown?Here a short story.I was a deputy returning officer at the February 27, 2025, Ontario provincial election. My job was to confirm the eligibility of voters and hand them a ballot.It was my civic duty and an opportunity to get to know some of my neighbours and co-citizens. Some voters had just turned 18 and were visibly excited about participating in democracy for the first time.As I handed each young adult a ballot, I looked them in the eye, wished them well, but in the back of my mind I could not help thinking about the ‘long, messy, species-wide existential meltdown' that awaits them.Now most young adults are well aware of this incoming meltdown. They talk about it openly.For example, my son, historian Riel Schryer, in conscient e154:I don't think there's going to be any serious response to the climate crisis until real catastrophes start happening. That tends to be how it works. And once you start seeing that, then you'll start seeing very serious action being put in place. Although, we'll see at that point, if it's too late or not.Also, my daughter, scientist Clara Schryer, in conscient e208:… changes happen : there are always ways to adapt. That's not to say that the initial change might not be kind of catastrophic, but there's always going to be something left and you have to work with that.Is it too late?How do we work with what is left? At a Surviving the Future reflection session on March 6th course leader Shaun Chamberlin read to us this quote by Canadian writer, teacher and grief literacy advocate Stephen Jenkinson :The question is not ‘are we going to fail?'  The question is ‘how?' The question is what shall be the manner of our inability to care for what was entrusted to us?So what does a baby boomer like myself do to regain a sacred trust to future generations that my generation has betrayed? These are the kinds of questions and dilemmas that we pondered during the course and took a deeper dive into those issues.Thankfully we had access to a wide range of resources and conversations that helped us navigate these complex waters. For example, I found comfort in this excerpt from Paul Kingsnorth's Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist :In an age in which ‘fighting for the planet' most often means tweeting, signing petitions, writing blogs and sometimes going on a march, the rhetoric seems not only overblown but likely to obscure the value of more focused, small-scale personal commitments to changing things for the better. … In 1978, [Wendell] Berry wrote to [Gary] Snyder … ‘Maybe the answer is to fight always for what you particularly love, not for abstractions and not against anything: don't fight against even the devil, and don't fight to “save the world”.' … Once you start thinking you are responsible, or can influence, everything, you are lost. When you take responsibility for a specific something, on the other hand, it's possible you might get somewhere.Local action kept coming up as a path forward during the course. The argument is that an individual can have the most impact locally such as with permaculture or community arts or really any form of action that engages with and preserves life where we live. The issue of grief also kept coming back. For example, this teaching from Stephen Jenkinson's So What Now?:Grief requires of us that we know what time we're in. And the great enemy of grief is hope. … Our time requires of us to be hope free. To burn through the false choice between hopeful and hopeless. … We don't require hope to proceed. We require grief to proceed.Conversations about grief led me to think about grief and grieving in the context of hope and hopelessness. The timing was good because during the course I was editing the first episode of season 6 of my conscient podcast and my conversation with farmer and educator Peter Janes and his father, archeologist and former museum director Robert R. Janes, of TreeEater Farm, touched upon hope and hopelessness :Here's Peter :I have a mixed relationship with that concept of hope. Because I actually genuinely have very little hope for the continuation of humanity. But then at the same time, every day I'm out here making bigger ponds and planting trees that I think will do better. And trying to bring on board people with the same ideas and visions. So it's a bit of a contradiction.Here's Bob's take: It's really easy to be hopeless. And I suppose it's rather contradictory to say hopeless but still want to do things constructively to overcome that hopelessness. And so, I guess that's what I mean. There are so many things we can do. I mean, we know what we need to do to weather this storm, but I guess the sacrifice and the suffering it's going to cause is just too much for people's imagination. So, there's middle ground with all that. And again, this farm is a source of being helpful, and I guess underneath that, being hopeful and a source of being. What was the mantra? Hopeless, but not helpless. Yeah. And the farm for me is that, is that tool, it's that environment. It's the context to do helpful things and to pave the way for the future.That's why I took the Surviving the Future course, hoping that a deeper dive, led by experts, would help me understand and face the complexities around us. I was not disappointed. Each week's readings, assignments, conversations, and meditations brought me deeper and deeper into, the compost of modernity, so to speak. I experienced intense moments of joy and sorrow. Of discouragement and hopefulness. Mostly, however, I was bewildered and slightly more able to acceptance to what is going on and explore new possibilities. Surviving the Future also helped me let go of my ego, by engaging in deeper listening to others and myself while release the compulsion to be the smartest kid in the room.No need to be anything other than an ordinary learner. Overall the course was both an exercise in humility and an opportunity to develop and maintain capacity. And that powerful February 24th open letter stayed with me, notably its conclusion: As a collective, we move with the discernment this moment demands—not with arrogance, but with honesty. Not in defiance, but in commitment. Then, when you know better, do better (Maya Angelou)Staying with the trouble (Donna Haraway) : no more rushing around to quick fixes, conclusions, simplistic solutions or passing judgements on situations that are still unfoldingMeditate daily: I am not what I thinkThe Master's tools will never dismantle the Master's house (Audre Lorde)When the children born today look back 30 years from now, what actions would they be grateful that we took right now? (GTDF collective)I'll conclude with this excerpt from Shaun Chamberlin's The Secret Truth Behind Environmentalists' Favourite Argument :For me personally, the harsh truth is that I cannot save Nature and/or humanity from the ongoing devastation, though I could burn myself out trying. It seems to me that there is not one thing that I can do to divert history. And facing that reality hurts.  But, beyond agony, joy. I sit with that pain, and its attendant tears and rage, I refuse to run from it or to distract myself with entertainment or with frantic work, and I find that it does not end me. Eventually, I come out the other side, somehow empowered. The psychic energy I have been using to suppress that fear and despair is released, and I look at the world with fresh eyes. ‘Ok', I breathe, ‘here I am, in a dying world'. It's the same dying world I lived in yesterday, but today I see it for what it is. ‘What now?' And this time the question feels less desperate, less anxious. What story do I want to tell with this day, with this life? We explore this question in a time of great turmoil and concern in the world, particularly in the U.S. We start with several passages coming from an awakened mind and heart, including a passage from the Metta Sutta--how would one then look at the larger world? We explore how the Buddha himself looked at the world and social structures, particularly in terms of caste and gender. From our practice seeing greed, hatred, and delusion in ourselves, we learn how to see these qualities in others, and in the world. From our ethical training, we learn how to see when we are not following the ethical guidelines and when others are not, including on a larger social level. We also see how we can understand some of the larger social issues, particularly related to the climate crisis, racism, and gender, in terms of greed (especially), hatred, and delusion. I'll be honest with you: the "great unraveling" is as real as the "great turning." They've always been happening at the same time. The unraveling was already accelerating, and now (late 2024) to see a democratic election process choose a path of more, worse, faster harm to our planet and our fellow human and more-than-human beings? It's been... deeply discouraging. For many I know, it's been devastating.And at the same time - always at the same time - I feel so blessed to have had a conversation with Cynthia Jurs about this. According to climate activist Joanna Macy, there are three stories that explain the world we're living in.The first is Business as Usual.That is, "Don't worry. Everything's fine."For example: "Global warming? No sweat — we're going to figure out how to suck carbon out of the air. No worries. The capitalist system will figure things out and the people who come up with the best, most valuable ideas will be rewarded. All is good."Sounds reasonable, especially if you consume mainstream news and listen to experts and pundits promoted and funded by capitalism.The second is the Great Unraveling.As in, "We're doomed."And it can sound like this: "The oceans are dying. Fisheries are collapsing. There's poverty everywhere. The climate is chaotic and dangerous. Everything's on fire or under flood waters. Can our national and international legal systems be harnessed in service of life, to put the brakes on the worst excesses of capitalism and slow the annihilation of our eco-sphere?  Stop Ecocide International exists explicitly to make this happen and this week, we talk to Jojo Mehta, co-founder and Executive Director of the movement. If we're going to stop capitalism's harms to the planet, we have to build road blocks into the current system that will be recognised by those who make the harms happen and one of the key ways to do this is to criminalise activities that are wiping out the future in real time - if we're using Joanna Macy's concept of the Three Pillars of the Great Turning, this is one of the most effective Holding Actions imaginable (the other two pillars are 'Systems Change' and 'Shifting in Consciousness', which we explore in many other episodes. Today, though, we're exploring this ultimate Holding Action and our guest is right at the forefront of this. Jojo Mehta is co-founder and Executive Director of Stop Ecocide International (SEI)  which she and the late pioneering barrister Polly Higgins (1968-2019) set up in 2017.  SEI is the driving force at the heart of the growing global movement to make ecocide an international crime. Their core work is supporting diplomatic progress and fostering global cross-sector support for this. To this end, they collaborate with diplomats, politicians, lawyers, corporate leaders, NGOs, indigenous and faith groups, influencers, academic experts, grassroots campaigns and individuals, positioning themselves with great clarity at the meeting point of legal evolution, political traction and public narrative. As a result, they are uniquely placed to track, support and amplify the global conversation. This conversation took us in many directions, exploring the legal implications of the law, but beyond it to the potential it has to counter the iniquities of the States Investor Dispute Settlements and how it could bolster Indigenous groups seeking protections for their ancestral lands.  We looked at the ways the law is being framed and where it and laws like it have already been enacted, how it's progressing in the International Criminal Court and what the ultimate aims are in using it as a deterrent, but also as a cover for those in the extractive, destructive industries - which, let's face it, is pretty much every industry - who want to act, but are constrained by their requirement to push always for profit regardless of the impact on people and planet.  Those who drive them may not care about the little people - you and me - but they care about themselves and if they face actual gaol terms, then their incentive structures become quite different.
