"This is the golden age of opportunity for accounting marketers. Let's seize it.”Capstone ConversationsBy Jean CaragherFor CPA TrendlinesAccounting marketing has come a long way since the landmark Bates v. State Bar of Arizona case, which 45 years ago allowed professional services firms to market their services. Today, as firms navigate digital transformation, client experience, and talent challenges, marketing plays an increasingly pivotal role. Featuring four decades of Association of Accounting Marketing (AAM) Marketers of the Year, the panel included Adrian Ornik (EY), Sally Glick (formerly Sobel & Co.), Eric Majchrzak (BeachFleischman), and Sarah Cirelli (HBK CPAs & Consultants). "Ignorance was bliss," he shares, reflecting on a period when both marketers and their stakeholders were still learning. Despite challenges, Ornik emphasizes that the profession's transformation provided immense opportunity.Glick, recognized by AAM in 2003, credits her father, a sole practitioner, for offering her the freedom to innovate when marketing lacked measurable tools. “There wasn't always a correlation between initiatives and results,” she notes, yet her creative strategies laid the groundwork for relationship-building in the profession.Majchrzak, awarded by AAM in 2015, speaks of broadening his influence beyond traditional marketing. He underscores the importance of stepping into leadership roles by challenging legacy business models and contributing to firm strategy. "Marketers can be the advocates for clients and catalysts for innovation," he says, urging professionals to push boundaries. The pandemic was a defining challenge for Cirelli, the 2021 AAM Marketer of the Year. “We had to rethink everything—how we deliver services, communicate, and generate business,” she shares. CEO Shelly Weir discovered that her notions of what CPAs were like differed from who they actually are when she came to the Florida Institute of CPAs. Putting aside the “number crunchers” concept, she has leaned into their strategic and critical thinking skills and their people-person approach to help revamp educational efforts to the next generation of accounting professionals. With Florida growing so quickly, the need for quality and specialized CPAs is growing, too, and she details on Paychex THRIVE, a Business Podcast, what FICPA is doing to address this. Weir also shares her take on AI and how it can reshape the accounting profession. This week on the Expert Voices podcast, Randy Wootton, CEO of Maxio, speaks with Rob Brown, Co-Founder of Accounting Influencers Roundtable (AIR), and author of the book “Build Your Reputation.” Rob and Randy delves explore the evolving responsibilities of accountants and accounting firms as they navigate an industry that demands a shift from traditional compliance to more strategic advisory roles. Rob touches upon the challenges faced due to an aging profession, technological advancements, and the shift towards value-added services. Listen this week as Rob shares effective strategies for making an impact and selling to accountants, highlighting the significance of establishing authentic partnerships and providing impactful solutions. Quotes“Accountants have to be able to sell an argument, an opinion, an excuse, a statement, a fact. They have to be able to get behind the stats. You're asking much more of an accounting and finance professional now than you ever were. That is why it's rarefied air to get somebody that can do all of those things and this is why we've got a problem.” -Rob Brown [18:54]“There's so many different ways to define an influencer. There's a lot of people that make a lot of noise on social media and they look popular and they have thousands of followers, but their content is lousy. It's lame. It's unoriginal. It's not innovative. They've regurgitated it from other people or they've said the same thing for years. You would look at them and think they're influencers. But I measure influence by relationships rather than noise and social media metrics.” - Rob Brown[48:27]Expert Takeaways The transition from traditional teaching to influencing the accounting industry is underscoring the need for education systems to instill real-life applicable skills.Accounting is an aging profession facing a talent shortage, prompting a shift from compliance-centric roles to advisory and consultative engagements.Technological savviness, commercial acumen, people skills, and selling abilities are identified as key skills for modern accounting professionals to remain relevant.Private equity firms are increasingly investing in accounting firms, seeing potential in streamlining operations and capitalizing on technological efficiencies.Selling to accountants is challenging due to their risk-averse nature; building strategic partnerships and establishing credibility is crucial for success in this market.Timestamps(00:02) Rob Brown intro(06:23) The evolving relationship between accounting firms and startups(11:33) Accountants are reinventing themselves as consultants, coaches, and mentors(19:18) The need for additional certifications to develop business awareness(25:47) AI may not have a rapid impact on the accounting industry(34:05) Three ways to get the attention of accountants(39:41) Understanding the target market(45:15) Focusing on deep work(50:37) The difference between influence and impactLinksMAXIOUpcoming Events

“Our value as CPA's goes beyond giving out facts in any situation. They act as the voice of reason and turn ideas into reality” David Peters David R. Peters is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP), with over fifteen years of experience in financial services. He was formerly the Chief Financial Officer of Compare.com and has been a financial advisor since 2015. He holds master's degrees in accounting, business administration, and financial services and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Financial Planning & Retirement Income at The American College. He is currently a continuing education instructor for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Surgent, and Kaplan Professional, and the President and owner of David Peters Financial Group Inc, Peters Tax Preparation & Consulting PC, and Peters Professional Education LLC. People dealing with complex financial jargons that they don't understand need someone to simplify the information and give they sound advice and that is what David believes CPA's are. There is a level of trust that one needs in order to put your life in someone else's hands. As a person you can learn the words of anything but you need to go beyond the words and actually communicate in a way that makes sense to the people in the room with you and it leads you as an accountant to go beyond your normal facts and learn something new. He brings on board his experiences and what he believes is the future and progression of CPA as a whole. More and more the accounting profession is coming off from just a room of accountants to meetings with different individuals, who have different functions in an organization. The accountant needs to begin to evolve and adapt to be able to cater for the needs of all these people.
