TODAY'S DEVOTION: The younger brother decides that it's time to come home. He's lived life on his own terms, and it hasn't worked out so well. And when he does come, he's greeted with a kiss, a ring, a coat, a party. He's not only found his father, but he's found his father's heart. The older brother needs to come home too, but we don't find him there. Well, he's kind of there. He's out working in the field, slaving as he called it, trying to achieve, I guess, but he fails to see that home has been there all along. He fails to see who his father really is. He won't come inside. The father pleads with him, but he's beside himself. All these years I've slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to, and all this time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. Oh, that hurts. It hurts to read it. Maybe because I can feel it. The father's response tells us everything, though. His father said to him, look, dear son. You have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours. This home has always been yours. My heart has always been yours. The riches I have have always been yours. They're a gift. No one is treating you like a slave, so stop seeing yourself that way. You haven't had to earn or perform or do anything other than be my child. All you had to do was receive. All you had to do was know my heart. It delights in a son. It delights in you. It delights when a son who was once dead now comes to life, who was once lost but is now home. So step inside the house. Partake in the party that your good father has always had for you. Come on home. And the prayer of my heart is that you, me, we will see who we really are. We're not slaves. That we will see who the father truly is. He is good. And that we will receive all that we have in him, that we will step into the house and join in the party. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph each had faith even unto the end of their days. But the thing the author of Hebrews zeros in on that they utilized their faith to extend a blessing to their children. Every parent has a God-given responsibility to bless their children. From the word “blessing” we get our word eulogy—“to speak well of.” There three lessons we can learn from these men of faith about blessing by faith. 1) The blessing is a spiritual tool giving hope to your children for the future2) The blessing is another way of you worshipping God3) The blessing is a means of interlocking the past with the future

FINALLY! The episode we've been wanting to do since day one. Today, we invite Persis' hot cousin Jacob Joseph to dive into the reality (and beauty) of being queer and Indian! Jacob tells us his entire story — from acknowledging his uniqueness as a kid to coming out as a teen. He gets candid about the disapproval of his parents, even going so far as to send him away to a religious camp that preached homophobia. Jacob talks about getting bullied at school, fighting with his parents, and overcoming the stigma of sex and queerness in Indian culture. He shares how things are today with his parents (and how his mom is still trying to arrange his marriage to a woman). Plus, Persis and Jacob discuss the differences in how they were raised, even though both their parents immigrated from India. How has being a queer minority impact you? Shoot us a DM to share your story @girlxgirlpodcast!
The Rav Hakolel or Chief Rabbi of New York City, was the title held by Rabbi Jacob Joseph (1841-1902). A student of the Volozhin Yeshiva and later of Rav Yisrael Salanter, he enjoyed a successful rabbinic career in Lithuania which culminated with his appointment to be the Maggid of Vilna. In 1888 he was invited to become the chief rabbi of a federation of synagogues in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Although it wasn't a very successful venture, behind it lies the story of a great rabbinical leader.
