Every straight guy will say something about their “gaydar” at least 3 times a year if they work in an office. But there was a time when Canada - yes, Canada - thought they really could build a device that could tell if someone was gay or not, and that this was a good thing.

Termine:
How can you tell if someone is gay? It's an age-old mystery that often turns into a discussion about “gaydar” – the ability to perceive or intuit someone's sexual orientation. In this episode, we are unraveling the intricacies of this phenomenon in how we navigate the subtle cues and signals that hint at our ‘gayness'. Some of the topics we're covering today are: The science behind gaydar Criteria we use to detect someone's sexual orientation Unconscious bias Code switching (adjusting your behavior to fit the social context) Challenging assumptions and stereotypes about being gay The ability to “turn on” or “turn off” your gayness Being closeted vs. being out Minority stress At the core of this discussion, we confront the issue of unconscious bias and its impact on our perceptions of others. How can we challenge these biases to foster a more inclusive and accepting society? Tune in to this intriguing episode as we uncover the mysteries of gaydar and explore human identity and connection. From early chatrooms of the 90s to geolocation apps in the 2010s, gay men have been considered to be early adopters of online dating. While today's gay dating apps offer unprecedented convenience for gay men to connect within their community, their widespread use has brought about some negative impacts, including issues related to sexual racism, body image, and the changing dynamics of social spaces for gay men.In this episode, we're exploring the historical trajectory from gay dating sites to the emergence of today's gay dating apps, the potentially harmful effects they can have on mental health, and how we can adopt healthier habits to navigate gay dating in the digital age.Related Episodes:Listen to Episode 24. They discuss a range of topics related to consciousness, cognition, and machine learning. Throughout the conversation, they touch upon various philosophical and computational concepts such as panpsychism, computationalism, and materiality. They consider the "hard problem" of consciousness, which is the question of how and why we have subjective experiences. Albarracin shares her views on the controversial Integrated Information Theory and the open letter of opposition it received from the scientific community. She reflects on the nature of scientific critique and rivalry, advising caution in declaring entire fields of study as pseudoscientific. A substantial part of the discussion is dedicated to the topic of science itself, where Albarracin talks about thresholds between legitimate science and pseudoscience, the role of evidence, and the importance of validating scientific methods and claims. They touch upon language models, discussing whether they can be considered as having a "theory of mind" and the implications of assigning such properties to AI systems. Albarracin challenges the idea that there is a pure form of intelligence independent of material constraints and emphasizes the role of sociality in the development of our cognitive abilities. Albarracin offers her thoughts on scientific endeavors, the predictability of systems, the nature of intelligence, and the processes of learning and adaptation. She gives insights into the concept of using degeneracy as a way to increase resilience within systems and the role of maintaining a degree of redundancy or extra capacity as a buffer against unforeseen events. The conversation concludes with her discussing the potential benefits of collective intelligence, likening the adaptability and resilience of interconnected agent systems to those found in natural ecosystems. https://www.linkedin.com/in/mahault-albarracin-1742bb153/ 00:00:00 - Intro / IIT scandal 00:05:54 - Gaydar paper / What makes good science 00:10:51 - Language 00:18:16 - Intelligence 00:29:06 - X-risk 00:40:49 - Self modelling 00:43:56 - Anthropomorphisation 00:46:41 - Mediation and subjectivity 00:51:03 - Understanding 00:56:33 - Resiliency Technical topics: 1. Scary up front but OK in the end! That's the accidental theme for this week's episode of KEEP IT WEIRD - The podcast for all things strange and unusual - and therefore our working title... But REAL Weirdos know the official title of this one... Hey, kids! If you're new here this is the show where Ashley & Lauren get together each week to talk about something WEIRD and this week had way too much body horror involved. We apologize to most of you but for some of you freaks: you're welcome? Ashley starts us off by taking us on a Magic School Bus ride for BODY TIME! Have you ever heard of Musical Ear Syndrome? Well some people are blaming this phenomenon for witnessing paranormal activity! But don't worry, we've got some alternative theories to compete with the skeptics. Lauren takes us into a JEEPERS CREEPERS that's all about our PEEPERS. Did you know that our eyeballs have something called "immune privelage?" It means that our eyes have a special relationship with our immune system that help protect them from inflammatory responses... but it also does horrible, terrible things. Ashley couldn't let our eyes get all the glory, she comes in next with another JEEPERS CREEPERS but this one is all about TEEFERS. Teeth, as adults call them. Did you know they could EXPLODE?! I don't need to say more about this, watch the ep to unlock new dental fears. Finally, Lauren wraps up the episode with a good old fashioned CONSPIRACY THEORY!! Only this time the conspiracy came true. The cold war made all of us a little cuckoo-- but possibly none moreso than the Canadian government who decided they needed to build the world's first "GAYDAR" to try to rid themselves of homosexual employees. But all it really did was prove that we just don't shame straight white men enough. Check out some links below if you'd like to do some more reading on today's topics!
