Hadean Press's Erzebet Barthold returns to the show this week, on the occasion of the release of Cyprian's Offices of the Spirits -the posthumously published final volume in Jake Stratton-Kent's Night School. We talk about goetia, we talk about the sublunar, we talk about English Qaballa -all the Jake hits, really. And, inevitably, we reminisce about the man himself: His main ideas and contributions. Who influenced him and who he influenced. What future generations will make of his work. Who he was as a friend and a person. All in all, a lovely chat, and especially timely as the snappily-titled premium member course Grimoires: Our Greek Inheritance (The Jake Edit) starts this weekend! This week's episode is an installment in the long-running World Without Sin series, examining how we respond to monolithic media and how not every outsider is a plucky freedom fighter. We also look at how and why it might be that all forms of expression are collapsing into a meme singularity and what this might have to do with the jester archetype. After that there is a life update and a travel magic story. And then -on the video version only- we have a Q&A where we speculate on the whereabouts of Kate Middleton, what's really going on with Boeing, healing from trauma patterns and G. K. Chesterton. Also, I promised I'd share some of the memes that were hard to convey in audio format, but instead, I am just sharing a link to the presentation from the livestream. It's all here if you're interested. The show notes are just some other things that are coming up or going on, because why not? Peter Grey's talk at Occulture Berlin 2023: Atomic Gods: Magick beyond the nuclear horizon. J. F. Martel of Weird Studies has a new course coming up this months on the films of Stanley Kubrick. This Missing Witches fundraiser that Rune Soup listeners contributed so generously is coming back around again. I probably mentioned this one a few weeks too early as I have no detail on prizes and such yet, lol. But the link is here! Hadean Press have just released the final Jake Stratton-Kent book we'll ever get, Cyprian's Offices of Spirits. My own fancy, pre-ordered copy is winging its way to the farm where it is useless to me for the Q2 member course will be Grimoires 2: Your Greek Inheritance (The Jake Edit) as I am currently back in South America. Lol. Anyway, more details on that closer to the date.

On Thursday August 15th, 2019 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the ancient "Sibylline Oracles" created, or re-created, in Greco-Roman Alexandria in the first centuries of the common era. These prophetic verses, attributed to the Sibyls, or prophetic priestesses of ancient Greece were actually a hoax, written by Jewish and Christian Gnostics in an attempt to recast the legendary lost prophetic books of ancient Rome to include the Bible and predict Christianity. They were so successful and popular that the early Christian Church approved of them. They were accepted into the Hermetic tradition, along with The Orphic Hymns and the Chaldean Oracles. They became an influence on western magick and Fairy lore. We will refer to Jake Stratton-Kent's summary of the Oracles in "Geosophia" (2010) and Milton Terry's translation 1899. So, if you want to catch up on this often forgotten aspect of western magical lore, tune in and we'll lift the veil.
Alkistis Dimech and Peter Grey of Scarlet Imprint return to the show for an exploration and celebration of Jake Stratton-Kent: In particular his thought, his research and his impact on the western magical world. We discuss: His generosity as a thought leader. His attitude to academia and academics. His role in the return of spirit-centric approaches to the grimoires. His revitalisation of blue grimoires. His understanding and love of the Ancient and Archaic Greek world. "I don't do angels." His championing of practice over theorising. His role as a key participant in the return of the Dead to contemporary western magical practice. I'm very grateful to Peter and Alkistis for sharing their thoughts about their friend and colleague, Jake.

I believe in one secret and ineffable LORD; and in one Star in the Company of Stars of whose fire we are created, and to which we shall return; and in one Father of Life, Mystery of Mystery, in His name CHAOS, the sole vicegerent of the Sun upon the Earth; and in one Air the nourisher of all that breathes. And I believe in one Earth, the Mother of us all, and in one Womb wherein all men are begotten, and wherein they shall rest, Mystery of Mystery, in Her name BABALON. And I believe in the Serpent and the Lion, Mystery of Mystery, in His name BAPHOMET. And I believe in one Gnostic and Catholic Church of Light, Life, Love and Liberty, the Word of whose Law is THELEMA. And I believe in the communion of Saints. And, forasmuch as meat and drink are transmuted in us daily into spiritual substance, I believe in the Miracle of the Mass. And I confess one Baptism of Wisdom whereby we accomplish the Miracle of Incarnation. And I confess my life one, individual, and eternal that was, and is, and is to come. AUMGN. AUMGN. DON'T MISS IN THIS EPISODE THE SHORT TALK I HAD WITH KAREL MCCOY, JAKE STRATTON-KENT'S GIRLFRIEND, ABOUT HIS ACTUAL HEALTH SITUATION AND THEIR NEWS - starts at 10:24 My guest this week is again someone who really does not need to be introduced in detail, as it is very likely that most of our listeners are familiar to some degree with the personality and works of musician and author Gary Lachman. It is a great pleasure for sure to welcome him back on the show and we're going to have a great time talking about quite a lot but especially about his two most recently published books, ‘Dreaming Ahead of Time: Experiences with Precognitive Dreams, Synchronicity and Coincidence' and ‘The Return of Holy Russia: Apocalyptic History, Mystical Awakening and the Struggle for the Soul of the World'. Gary will tell us about the background of ‘Dreaming Ahead of Time' which is essentially based on a talk he gave 2019 in London about the state called ‘hypnagogia', the strange liminal space between being awake and sleeping and how precognition is easily possible during this specific time. He will lead us back into the 1980s where he took his first steps in experimenting with dreams and explain what role a book published in the 1920s by aeronautical engineer J.W. Dunne played in this scenario. Soon enough our conversation is to become quite philosophical touching upon basic questions of time and its structure and role in language and arts as well as its peculiar trait to be entirely subjective. Gary will also be pointing out the main differences between synchronicity and coincidence and giving us some examples I bet quite a few of our listeners will be able to relate to. This episode's second subject will be Gary's book ‘The Return of Holy Russia' which was published right at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. Gary will provide our audience with some background on how the writing process is connected to his previous book ‘Dark Star Rising' which was mainly focused on the politics around Trump, the Alt-Right and Chaos Magick. We'll be talking about Aleksandr Dugin, Putin and trying to illuminate the idea behind their geopolitical ambitions, not in order to justify them, only to understand the context behind them. Finally, Gary will tell us about his most recent not yet published book on Maurice Nicoll, a Scottish physicist and psychiatrist from the 20th century who was not only studying with Jung but also with Gurdijeff and Ouspensky which makes him a fascinating individual so that Gary decided to write a biography about him. Gary's page on Wikipedia His own website And finally his Amazon.com page Music played in this episode 1) SHE GOT ARRESTED - The Interrupters This track is a tribute to Jack Stratton-Kent, the whole occult community is thinking of him and wishing him speedy recovery from his stroke. This month's entry in the Conversations series is with Jake Stratton Kent, who is well known for his writings on ancient goetia, particularly their relationship to the grimoire traditions. Jake's work is an invaluable exploration into pre-Platonic beliefs and magical practices. In this episode Jake and I talk about the different "versions" of Hecate in ancient times, questioning the idea that she wasn't always a chthonic deity. This includes a discussion of goetia, Hecate's association with Apollo, the Athenian Hecate, and the challenge of the more current interpretations of the goddess.
What does it mean to forge an authentic, idiosyncratic magical practice from the myriad of new grimoiric research and publications dotting the landscape in the last 20 years? What are the key elements that make magical ritual work? In this episode Rudolf welcomes legendary Jake Stratton-Kent who is one of the most knowledgeable authors and practitioners of grimoire magic and has been called the most notorious necromancer in England. Jake describes himself as a ‘very late Late Pagan’ which is a reference to his focus on the historical time where late Paganism overlaps with the early church period forming a fascinating and nurturing soil for magic as we think of it these days. Having started out as a solitary practitioner more than 40 years ago with Paul Huson’s ‘Mastering Witchcraft’ Jake worked his magical path through different techniques always seeking out the historical roots of ideas and ultimately coming back full circle to one of his very first interests, grimoire magic. Since then Jake has become a widely renowned authority on goetic workings and in this episode he shares why he was drawn to this kind of so-called ‘left-hand’ or ‘dark’ magic. Furthermore, Rudolf and Jake dive into the effectiveness of magic in general, necromancy and its significance, recommended sources, how being ‘fashionable’ in magic might lead to blind spots, how ‘bad reputation’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘bad’ and whether or not respectability should be part of a magician’s vocabulary. As for his work as an author, Jake has written numerous pamphlets and articles for various publications from the mid-1970s to the current day. He is the author of the ‘Encyclopaedia Goetica’, comprising three volumes in total: ‘The True Grimoire’, which is a reconstructed and extensively commented edition of the infamous ‘Grimoirum Verum’, ‘Geosophia’, a two volume survey of the Greek origins and mythic background of goetia itself and ‘The Testament of Cyprian the Mage’, which is an analysis of the grimoires and their spirit hierarchies in Late Antiquity, all published by Scarlet Imprint. Another quite remarkable work is ‘Pandemonium - a discordant concordance of diverse spirit catalogues’, published by Hadean Press. Jake previously edited and contributed to the influential journal ‘The Equinox – British Journal of Thelema’ which is nowadays superseded by ‘Conjure Codex’, a serial anthology of writings on spirit conjuring traditions from around the world, ancient and modern, published by Hadean Press. As a ‘senile delinquent’ Jake has a background in the Youth Radicalisation and Free Festival Movement of the 1970s that has never entirely left him. He lives in the UK but loves the Czech Republic, especially Prague. Music played in this episode 1) PURSON - The Contract (2013) 2) L'Uomo Nero - Nel Deserto (2020) 3) Cello-Duo - Beginnig to End (Track 1 starts at 6:12, Track 2 at 45:42, Track 3 at 1:24:03) Intro and Outro Music especially written and recorded for the Thoth-Hermes Podcast by Chris Roberts

On Thursday May 21st, 2015 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present an interview with British author and magician Jake Stratton-Kent. Jake Stratton-Kent is especially noted for his defense and support of the Goetic aspect of ceremonial magick and his research linking this practice to the deities and oracles of ancient Greek mythology, especially the denizens of the underworld or Tartarus ruled by Hades or Pluto. He is more partial to the Grimorium Verum than the Goetia or Lesser Key of Solomon although he stresses that both are essentially Goetic from the ancient Greek word "Goes" meaning a necromancer. So if you want to meet a master of art magical, tune in and spend an hour with maestro Jake Stratton-Kent.

Today on the Glitch Bottle podcast we are so excited to welcome Magician, author, scholar and grimoiric firebrand Mr. Jake Stratton Kent. It would be fair to call Jake a ‘Renaissance man’, but that would actually be doing a disservice by limiting the scope and interest of Jake’s work to just the Renaissance. His interest in magic spans the ancient, medieval, renaissance, and modern eras as well as stretching from the West to the Middle East and crucially, the New World. Jake’s been a goetic magician since 1972, making more than forty years of continuous goetic practice. His practical work integrates the magical papyri, italo-french grimoires in particular the Grimorium Verum and various African traditional religions. In this podcast, Jake shares about his take on the actual roots of goetic magic, what most magicians get wrong while approaching magic, and where he thinks magic in the 21st century is going. We also discuss the Grimoirum Verum and what this term ‘magesplaining’ is all about, and more.
