Today we're joined by the Rev. Peter Gray, the soon-to-be Interim Rector at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. We talk about Jesus' authority and our place in the world. On this episode we did a couple reading excerpts from amazing works by Peter Grey & Gemma Gary talking about the wilding of Witchcraft among other things. How it may be possible to lose so much by bending to modern culture and commercialism.... We also talked about the difficulty in a role shift from being an advisor, behind the scenes to now being the first face one sees walking in the door and as always the ever-evolving spiritual path and the lessons it brings good, bad and in-between.
Welcome to THE LAST ULTRACULTURE PODCAST EVER! Because we are totally getting cancelled for this and I don't give a flying f***. Not one! The legendary Alkistis Dimech & Peter Grey of the Scarlet Imprint publishing house join the show to talk about the Israel/Hamas war, the growth of Islamism, the role of Thelema in revitalizing the dying Western project, and the rise of the goddess BABALON as a rallying call to all magical practitioners. This is a doozy of a conversation, and probably my favorite episode of all time. Strap in! Links & Resources:
This week's episode is an installment in the long-running World Without Sin series, examining how we respond to monolithic media and how not every outsider is a plucky freedom fighter. We also look at how and why it might be that all forms of expression are collapsing into a meme singularity and what this might have to do with the jester archetype. After that there is a life update and a travel magic story. And then -on the video version only- we have a Q&A where we speculate on the whereabouts of Kate Middleton, what's really going on with Boeing, healing from trauma patterns and G. K. Chesterton. Also, I promised I'd share some of the memes that were hard to convey in audio format, but instead, I am just sharing a link to the presentation from the livestream. It's all here if you're interested. The show notes are just some other things that are coming up or going on, because why not? Peter Grey's talk at Occulture Berlin 2023: Atomic Gods: Magick beyond the nuclear horizon. J. F. Martel of Weird Studies has a new course coming up this months on the films of Stanley Kubrick. This Missing Witches fundraiser that Rune Soup listeners contributed so generously is coming back around again. I probably mentioned this one a few weeks too early as I have no detail on prizes and such yet, lol. But the link is here! Hadean Press have just released the final Jake Stratton-Kent book we'll ever get, Cyprian's Offices of Spirits. My own fancy, pre-ordered copy is winging its way to the farm where it is useless to me for the Q2 member course will be Grimoires 2: Your Greek Inheritance (The Jake Edit) as I am currently back in South America. Lol. Anyway, more details on that closer to the date.
Alkistis Dimech and Peter Grey of Scarlet Imprint return to the show for an exploration and celebration of Jake Stratton-Kent: In particular his thought, his research and his impact on the western magical world. We discuss: His generosity as a thought leader. His attitude to academia and academics. His role in the return of spirit-centric approaches to the grimoires. His revitalisation of blue grimoires. His understanding and love of the Ancient and Archaic Greek world. "I don't do angels." His championing of practice over theorising. His role as a key participant in the return of the Dead to contemporary western magical practice. I'm very grateful to Peter and Alkistis for sharing their thoughts about their friend and colleague, Jake.

On Thursday May 11th, 2017 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review "Lucifer Princeps" (2015) by Peter Grey. This book is quite different in style from its predecessor "The Red Goddess" which, although well-researched, explored the background and origins of Aleister Crowley's "Babalon" in a popular style. Lucifer Princeps however is a scholarly work and might even be an academic dissertation or thesis edited for the lay reader. Being an academic work it suffers from the assumption that the reader is familiar with the material that the writer is working from. Fortunately this corpus is mostly Biblical and Apocryphal but he cross references other mythologies. Nevertheless the book is a wonderful resource and a great contribution to the Western Esoteric Tradition. He starts with Isaiah's lament and curse as the beginning of the Lucifer's Fall from Heaven story. This sets the stage for a parade of sources from ancient Sumerian and Canaanite mythology. We learn about the first ascent to Heaven by the Sumerian king Etana, and then the Canaanite god Athar who tries to sit on Baal's throne. We learn that the Yahwehists hated the pagan gods of the heavens and that the War in Heaven was actually Yahweh against El and the Elohim. Lucifer is finally revealed as our old friend Semyaza (Semhaza), the leader of the 200 Fallen Angels from the original Book of Enoch. The author concludes his work by offering us a mini-grimoire of Semhaza and his 20 officers, leaving us the job of obtaining their sigils -- which we will certainly do. So if you want get a head start on this project, tune in and give a listen.
On Thursday May 4th, 2017 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review and discuss "The Red Goddess" (2007) and "Lucifer Princeps" (2015) by Thelemic magician Peter Grey. The Red Goddess is devoted to establishing the history and mystique of the Thelemic composite pagan goddess "Babalon", which he correctly derives from Ishtar and Astarte. This evolution is for the most part well-researched and well reasoned from a Thelemic perspective, although Grey is critical of Crowley and seems to think that Babylon is too good for the Beast. Most importantly he supports the Divine feminine in magical religion. In "Lucifer Princeps" he does the same for Lucifer on the male side of the magical religious pantheon. In this case he works from Isaiah back to the Book of Enoch, correctly concluding that Lucifer was originally Semyaza and of Canaanite origin. With the exception of his interest in Simon Magus Grey seems to ignore the early Christian Gnostic contributions to Magick but his books are nonetheless readable and thought provoking -- so tune in and we shall look at our magical history through a glass darkly.
Here is the next of the free or publicly available modules of the latest premium member course, Protection and Malefica. It is a discussion on morality frameworks and how, when and we we might magically intervene. The one and only Peter Grey of Scarlet Imprint joins us for a deep dive on one of Jack Parsons's most important texts, We Are The Witchcraft. This is a video discussion with slides and such, but if you would prefer to listen to it like a normal podcast, this audio version is eminently followable. His Lucifer: Princeps (2015), is a study of the origins of the figure of Lucifer; he is currently writing the second part, Lucifer: Praxis. His collected writings, from 2008–2018, are published in The Brazen Vessel (2019) with those of Alkistis Dimech. Alkistis Dimech Biography: With Peter Grey, I am the co-founder of Scarlet Imprint. I am a writer and artist – working principally with dance and the body. My practice is grounded in butô (dark dance). My work explores the occulted dimensions of the body, its subtle anatomy and sexuality as an archaeology of the flesh – drawing from the esoteric and phenomenological traditions – and seeks to unfold a process and techne of bodily spiritual transformation. I have performed in the UK, Europe and the United States, solo and in collaboration with musicians and artists, notably Z'EV, Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert, and Anji Cheung – and spoken on my practice, and given workshops, at conferences and events in the UK, Europe and the United States. Selected works from 2008 to 2018 are documented in The Brazen Vessel and at alkistisdimech.com. I am currently creating Antimony, a work of texts and images on the angelic, alchemical transfiguration of the body.
I talk about witchcraft and magic's place in the future with authors and founders of Scarlet Imprint, Alkistis Dimech & Peter Grey!

For episode 67 it is my great pleasure to welcome author Peter Grey. Peter is also the co-founder of iconic occult publishers Scarlet Imprint and joins us today to discuss his new book ‘The Two Antichrists'. “The Two Antichrists is a monograph by Peter Grey on the figure of Antichrist in a post-Christian and progressive Thelemic context. Opening with considerations on the future of witchcraft and its relation to radical ecology, Grey returns to the Babalon Working of Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard, and considers a series of little examined texts from science fiction and the outer fringes of Scientology which form a ‘Babalon Apocrypha.' By reading across these sources, the familiar story is revealed to have hidden depths and dimensions. Exploring the role of Antichrist in relation to Parsons and Hubbard, Grey provides insights into the initiatory drama of Thelema: of Satanic rites, Abyss and Angel. The Two Antichrists observes the long shadow cast by the monolith of Scientology, and Parsons' eclipsed sodality The Witchcraft. Looking to the future, he envisions an emergent space witchcraft, infused with the spirit of Do What Thou Wilt. The book concludes with a series of non-denominational rituals and revised Antichrist workings. The work is a fusion of inspiration, research and ritual, from which Grey draws the first lines of his vision of witchcraft in the dusk of our world. The work stands as a companion to Lucifer: Praxis (forthcoming 2022), and continues the trajectory initiated with The Red Goddess and pursued through Apocalyptic Witchcraft. The work was completed on Winter solstice 2020.” Enjoy Show notes: https://scarletimprint.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/spirit-box/message

I wanted him to discuss his book Free To Learn along with his recent article in Psychology Today, "School Refusal: A Crime, A Mental Health Disorder, or A Human Right." We get to those things later in the conversation, but we begin with discussing childhood, play, responsibility, and reassurance that despite COVID-19 rocking our schools to the core, our kids will learn. Last week I wrote about the 3 Phases of Response to COVID-19, and if you haven't read it yet, it's worth a read. It is helping me to conceptualize the work, and it is helping me realize nothing is an emergency. The impact of COVID-19 on education will be experienced long after the virus is gone. Change.School cohort 10 is just starting just around the corner. Sign up to be notified when dates are set.

PETER GREY is a writer, and the co-founder of Scarlet Imprint. He is the author of The Red Goddess (2007), Apocalyptic Witchcraft (2013) and Lucifer: Princeps (2015). An extensive selection of his essays on magic and witchcraft is collected in The Brazen Vessel (2019). He is currently writing Lucifer: Praxis which addresses working with the fallen angels of the Enochic tradition and their transvection into the grimoires and modern practice. ALKISTIS DIMECH is the co-founder of Scarlet Imprint, for which she is editrix, typographer and book designer. She is a dancer and choreographer, working within the lineage of butō, a discipline and philosophy she has explored since 2002. She has performed in the UK, Europe and the United States, solo and in collaboration with other artists, notably Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert, Anji Cheung, and Z’EV. In her research and magical practice, she gives a central place to the phenomenology of movement and the living body, specifically in relation to the occult. She has spoken on her work and given workshops at conferences and events in the UK, Europe and the United States. Her dance work is documented at http://alkistisdimech.com and selected writings were published last year in The Brazen Vessel. Peter Grey speaks about his book 'Free to Learn', in which he argues that children are the best directors of their education, and speaks about the Sudbury Valley school approach to education. Want to learn about teaching and education in Australia?
When people feel that they can try, and experiment and risk without fear they will play and persist until they find that perfect recipe for success. What has to happen or be in place before we can be in a playful space? Fore Play! Unlike children we don't jump into play as easily as adults. Even under the most terrible conditions children play.In post War Bomb sites and mass poverty children find play, it is a natural escape from reality and a way to make sense of senselessness. It is also practice for navigating reality, physically exploring and thinking your way around and between, having to rely on others and create your own path forward. Have you ever watched children as they create a game or fantasy play in the space where there seems to be no set up for play? Hardware stores and junkyards, your office and a restaurant. Just the other day as I was watching a hockey game in a local arena.I came across a large A frame sign that said "No playing, parents please keep your children under control in this area."I had to laugh as this space was a beautiful wide-open arena viewing area with incredible checkers on the floors as tiles. There were benches to hide under and the sign itself was the perfect tent for building. So, it was like someone had said… We set up this great space for your imagination please refrain from using it! As I thought about this week's podcast I giggled and thought we set up the foreplay …. and then said no play allowed. You see children don't need foreplay they can find it anywhere but adults we need some foreplay we need to think about what happens before people can be in a space where they can think freely, be themselves, remove the filters that keep us stifled, So how do you set up adult foreplay for play ?What does your perfect play environment look like, what needs to be in place so that you can feel free to experiment, risk, think outside the parameters, with new lenses and ingredients, imagine something different, get lost in a moment or many moments…Peter Grey’s research says :Adults can test the degree to which their work is play by asking themselves this: “If I could receive the same pay, the same prospects for future pay, the same amount of approval from other people, and the same sense of doing good for the world for not doing this job would I quit?” If the person would eagerly quit, the job is not play. To the degree that the person would quit reluctantly, or not quit, the job is play. It is something that the person enjoys independently of the extrinsic rewards received for doing it.(P. Grey, ) https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/freedom-learn/200811/the-value-play-i-the-definition-play-gives-insightsThis week let's consider the foreplay; what we do that sets people up to imagine, to not filter their response to speak from a place of genuine connection, and strength, without the fear of failure or judgement, let’s return to play and start to create lasting change…Music Creditshttps://soundcloud.com/adsummitph/come-out-and-playWords: Abi Aquino of MullenLowe PhilppinesMusic: Jasper PerezArtist: QuestRecorded, Mixed and Mastered at Soundesign Manila, with special thanks to Raul Blay.

Eric Peterson joins us for a wide-ranging conversation based in his work as an outdoor adventure leader and scholar of all things ecological. We explore topics such as ecological consciousness; the interconnectedness of the socio-political, ecological, and psychological; ecolinguistics; ecopsychology; the importance of story; why an animist viewpoint is essential; the war on dreaming; and the problem with trying to "save" the planet. About Eric Peterson: Over twenty-five years ago, Eric started working as an outdoor adventure leader in the southwestern Oregon and northern California area. He has guided trips in rafting, kayaking (rivers, lakes, and ocean), canoeing, fishing, biking, skiing, and hiking. He began his career as an outdoor adventure leader as a ski instructor and ski patroller at Mount Ashland, as well as a whitewater river guide on rivers like the Rogue, Klamath, North Umpqua, Scott, and California Salmon. At the age of twenty-six, he started a year-round adventure company in Ashland, Oregon, which he ran successfully for a few years before deciding to focus on teaching Swiftwater Rescue. At the age of forty, he returned to Southern Oregon University (SOU) where he earned Bachelor of Science degrees in anthropology, psychology, and a minor in Native American Studies. Eric graduated from California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) with an MA in Transformative Leadership and is continuing his inquiry at CIIS in the Doctoral Transformative Studies program (Ph.D., 2020). Eric’s passion is in the therapeutic and transformative powers of nature, and how humans relate to the more-than-human world. His current studies lie within the intersections of transformative leadership, social and environmental justice, and pedagogies and curriculums that nurture ecological consciousness. He utilizes a systems thinking approach to understanding how all our contemporary human problems are interrelated and interconnected and believes that outdoor adventure leaders hold potential great influence for positive socio-cultural transformation. Eric is looking at focusing his dissertation upon: A meta-synthesis of how the term "eco" is showing up in areas like: ecophilosophy, ecopsychology, ecotherapy, ecofeminism, ecoliteracy, and ecoleadership. Before we get into today's episode I want to talk about you. I want to talk about your life, the way you show up in how you live, love, play, work, mother, and parent. Are you happy? Do you feel like you are thriving? Do you feel successful? Do you feel proud of yourself, of the way you raise your family and show up in your life? Do you feel good in your body, with your energy levels, with how you organize your day? Or do you feel like a panting dog most days, like you are running around and around in circles and never having enough time to finish anything? Does this sound familiar? Do you feel endless exhaustion, moodiness, hormonal, in all sorts of pain, looking at yourself in the mirror with disgust and shame, having a flakey hair, flaky skin, disconnected from yourself? Feeling chronically unappreciated, lonely, constantly yelling, and never feeling like you have enough. Do you feel like all you do is survive the day instead of thriving in your days? The only reason I bring this up is because I have been that woman not long ago. For the most part, I had everything I needed - I had the house, the marriage, kids, my work but something was missing. The missing piece was me. I wasn't present. I was doing all the things, showing up for the logistics but going to bed feeling depleted. Admitting this wasn't easy, I had to be willing to be uber honest with myself and say out loud that, slowly, I was wasting my life away. The questions to ask here is when? When will you wake up and decide that it's time for a change? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. When will you decide that it's time to take care of you? When is it time to give yourself what you've been giving to others all this time? I want you to know that it is possible to change your current reality if you feel like you are not living up to your potential. If you feel like you are wasting your life, Like I did. But where do you start? Here's an amazing exercise for you to do at home or once you have some time for yourself. Start by writing out what it is that you really want, or would be nice to have. Do this exercise even if it feels like you are fooling yourself or wasting time doing it. Do it anyway! This is your doorway to seeing what's possible. Because If you can write it, it can be achieved. Period. Then I want you to reach out to me and share with me what you've come up with. I want to invite you to chat with me, and share with me what is it that you need right now in order to feel good. What is it that you need but don't dare to admit to anyone, not even to yourself? I work with women and mothers who are ready to step out of their own way, define what it is that they need, voice it loud and clear and then create the reality they want for themselves. In order for this to happen you need to have the mindset down, your health in check, you need to learn how to organize your life around your fluctuating hormones so that you can rip the maximum of each day. This is super important if you are a busy mom who doesn't have time to waste. Whether you're running a business, organizing an event, getting ready for an important speech that has the potential to change your entire career, or even if you are raising small kids, juggling a million things all at once, you need to learn how to move through life in a female body, embodying femininity, sexuality, sensuality, mastering how to regulate your big and scary emotions. The truth is that we are not men and it is absurd, in my opinion, that we try to move through life like men and then feel like shit. This is because we are women, and women do life differently. So I encourage you to do this exercise and then reach out to me and we can chat about what it is that you need and how I can help you have more of what you want by doing less work and hustle. You can reach me at dorit@healthbeginswithmom.com Alright, so this ties beautifully with today's topic. Today we are talking about respect and peacefulness in parenting, and you and I know that it all has to start from within. We cannot respect other people unless we respect ourselves, respectful parenting begins with the inner work. As a parent, you know that having children is one thing. Enjoying the process of raising them is another. Raising confident, resilient, self-reliant, independent, resourceful, explorative, children with a growth mindset is a completely different ballgame. It requires intention, time investment, being present, and resourcefulness on our part as well. This is not an easy task nowadays where we have a million things pulling at us in different directions. We have our fulltime jobs, careers, activities, food planning and food prep, dishes, laundry, household stuff, kids school, driving them to and from, your marriage, friends & family, holidays, and so on. No wonder why so many of us, women and moms, are feeling like we are constantly out of balance, or searching for balance every single day. The shiny object syndrome is alluding us to sometimes neglect, unintentionally, of course, the things that matter the most - enjoying your own life and the life, or lives, you've created. We all want what's best for our kids. I think the vast majority of parents want to do a good job, most of us want to raise people we need more of in this world and not the opposite. I think the best approach to this would be realizing that raising kids will trigger you, it will bring up a lot of gunk from your past, things you haven't dealt with yet, and in a sense viewing parenting as an opportunity for personal growth and your kids as your teachers, or gurus One website I really enjoy and is super helpful for me is The Parenting Junkie. Here's a little piece from the website: If you believe that parenting is a journey of transformational growth – for the parent, more than for the child. If you believe there are no bad children, only children who are having a hard time.If you believe no matter what situation you’re in – empathy will help.If you believe that good parenting means striving for connection. If you believe that connected parenting does not come naturally, but demands intense levels of commitment and deliberate practice. Well, then my friend, you and I are already best buds. Today on the show I am chatting with Avital Schreiber, the creator of The Parenting Junkie, who is a mindful parenting coach and imperfect Mom to three little-spirited gurus. Avital's work is dedicated to helping parents to Love Parenting and to Parent from Love. The Parenting Junkie publishes weekly videos designed to inspire, inform and uplift and runs courses and memberships dedicated to prioritizing Play, Presence, and Peace in our and our children's lives. A HuffPost contributor, with an audience in all four corners of the globe, her work is endorsed and recommended by the leaders in the Parenting space, Dr. Shefali Tsabary, and Dr. Laura Markham. Here's what we cover on the show Why is it important to respect our children? How to apply the respectful and peaceful parenting approach with regards to food and mealtime? The Gardner and the Carpenter approach to raising children. How is it that our children are our teachers? What are we learning from them? Conscious feeding and feeding children with patience, love, good sense. Feeling in control over your buying power with regards to food The atmosphere we create when we eat and empowering kids to enjoy mealtime The division of responsibility in feeding Kids want to thrive and succeed, how we can tap into their inner wisdom Prioritizing play as the pillar of childhood Benefits of boredom and doing nothing Show Notes theparentingjunkie.com The Gardener and the Carpenter: What the New Science of Child Development Tells Us About the Relationship Between Parents and Children by Alison Gopnik Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense, Revised and Updated Edition by Ellyn Satter Experts mentioned: Dr. Peter Grey, Alfie Kohn, Ken Robinson, Dr. Shefali Tsabari, Dr. Dan Siegel The Division of Responsibility Present Play Membership Community
This sets the stage for a parade of sources from ancient Summerian and Canaanite mythology. We learn about the first ascent to Heaven by the Summerian king Etana, and then the Canaanite god Athar who tries to sit on Baal's throne.
The Red Goddess is devoted to establishing the history and mistique of the Thelemic composite pagan goddess "Babalon", which he correctly derives from Ishtar and Astarte. This evolution is for the most part well-researched and well reasoned from a Thelemic perspective, although Grey is critical of Crowley and seems to think that Babalon is too good for the Beast.
Episode 52! That means the podcast has been running -without interruption- for a whole year. If you've never done it before, you may be unaware of why I am quietly quite proud of this achievement. If you have done it before -but not in a year where you secretly moved across the world and lived first in a house with no furniture, then an AirBnB, then lived without a fixed address for two months- well... look into it. It's not that bad. (Ha! Definitely do not do this. Fishing around in several suitcases for a microphone to setup on a bedside dresser in your brother's apartment while keeping Peter Levenda waiting. Yeesh.) To celebrate, the obvious guest choice is guest number one, Peter Grey -this time dramatically improved with the addition of Alkistis to the discussion. And given that the show is about milestones, it seems the best thing to talk about is the year that was, as well as where magic is going in 2017. Thank you all so much for listening. Roll on, Year 2!
