James Sweet, a professor of African history and the former president of the American Historical Association, wrote an essay last year that sparked a significant clash in the world of academia about the role of politics in history and vice versa. He argued that historians have become compromised by politics—that they begin not with the evidence but with the contemporary social-justice concern that they want to speak to, in order to go viral on Twitter. This discussion may seem niche, but it is in dialogue with a national one as politicians such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis vow to remove all traces of “wokeness” from school curricula and exert control over how history is understood. Emma Green joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss her piece “The Right Side of History,” about Sweet's essay and how historians should respond to the current political moment.
In this first episode of the new season, we will be discussing the fallout from AHA president James Sweet's apology for being honest about The 1619 Project and the issues of presentism. The issues of presentism are glaring and it undermines the study of history and the integrity of those who practice it. The president of the American Historical Association, James H. Sweet, wrote a column for the AHA addressing the problem. This created an uproar and the Twitter mob came after him. The Left created such a stir that Sweet bowed to their pressure and issued an apology, which is now above the column he wrote. Phil Magness wrote an article for the American Institute for Economic Research entitled “The Suicide of the American Historical Association" about how Sweet's Soviet-style apology is a picture perfect representation of the ills we see in the industry of history. Phillip W. Magness is the Director of Research and Education at the American Institute for Economic Research and a Research Fellow at the Independent Institute. He holds a PhD and MPP from George Mason University's School of Public Policy, and a BA from the University of St. Thomas (Houston). His books include “Colonization After Emancipation: Lincoln and the Movement for Black Resettlement”; “Cracks in the Ivory Tower: The Moral Mess of Higher Education”; and “The 1619 Project: A Critique.” He has taught public policy, economics, and international trade at American University, George Mason University, and Berry College. His articles have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Newsweek, Politico, Reason, National Review, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. James Sweet writes a compelling piece on history, gets pilloried by the woke mob, then apologizes for his heresy.
You've heard the one about how the Past, Present, and Future walk into a bar? It was tense (pause for mandatory eye-roll). Well, speaking of tense, things are a little frosty these days in the U.S. culture wars over history. It's getting so you can't tell your friends from your frenemies. The profit-maximizers over at the College Board announced a new AP African American History course, so good, right? Sure, but what took so long? AHA president James Sweet got into hot water over some goofy comments on presentism, African American history, and the Supreme Court, and then apologized. So, uh, good? We hear that President Joe Biden calls on a historian when he needs perspective. That's gotta be good, right? Wait, ithe historian he listens to is Jon Meacham? Well let's just say it's all pretty confusing, but not to worry. Think of us here at HAG as your history relationship therapists. In this episode we've brought in Past and Present to work through their communication issues, break some really bad habits, and establish some healthy norms going forward (you hear that Future?).
In another "I told you so" moment, the young dopes who run the UVA student newspaper want to cancel Thomas Jefferson. At his own university. This is the problem with the presentism James Sweet discussed in his now canceled essay. The response should be simple: "No. Shut up." https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brion-mcclanahan/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brion-mcclanahan/support
The woke history mob that targeted AHA president James Sweet is nothing new. In fact, these Twitter tough guys (and gals) jump on anyone who does not toe the establishment orthodoxy on race, class, and gender. Sweet committed the mortal sin of questioning their motives. As Phil Magness points out in a great essay, this is the death of history and the "suicide" of the AHA. https://mcclanahanacademy.com https://brionmcclanahan.com/support http://learntruehistory.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brion-mcclanahan/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brion-mcclanahan/support
An internecine controversy among historians spilled out into the broader public conversation. A term called "presentism" started trending on Twitter after the president of the American Historical Association, Dr. James Sweet, wrote an article asking if there was too much focus from historians on "contemporary social justice issues—race, gender, sexuality, nationalism, capitalism..." I speak with Rev. Dr. Malcolm Foley, who has his PhD in religious historical studies, to help explain what presentism is, why it is so controversial, and how Black studies takes a different approach. In this episode, I present a comparative analysis of the narrative and methodological approaches employed by two prominent historians in their study of African public healing and intellectual history in the Iberian Atlantic. I will focus on James Sweet's book titled, "Domingos Álvares, African Healing, and the Intellectual History of the Atlantic World" and Pablo Gomez's "The Experiential Caribbean: Creating Knowledge and Healing in the Early Modern Atlantic." Both authors study individual African ritual practitioners to learn about how Black Caribbeans thought about and experienced their worlds in Brazil and Colombia respectively, through ritual and intellectual discourses.

In our last episode, we showed that pre-Columbian ideas about human differences weren't consistent with what we think of today as race. In this episode we try to answer the question of how race got culturally constructed after Columbus. We talk to Professor Rob Schwaller of the Department of History at the University of Kansas who tells us how notions of difference in 16th century colonial Mexico led to legal decisions by the Spanish crown that resulted in a process of racialization of difference. He describes a complex and messy process between indigenous peoples, Africans, and Spanish that played an important role in the development of scientific ideas about race. Here are some resources for this topic: Schwaller, Robert C. Géneros de Gente in Early Colonial Mexico: Defining Racial Difference. University of Oklahoma Press, 2016.
