Welcome to “Not Couple Goals” where co-hosts Allie Nelson and Tyler McCarthy do a deep dive into a different ridiculous romantic thriller from the vantage point of their long-term relationship. Allie, a TV writer/producer and actress, has an affinity for romantic thrillers, the more salacious the better. Tyler, an entertainment reporter and critic, often finds himself drawn in despite his better judgment. Join them as they explore all the ways it's possible to love too hard… like WAY too hard. In this episode, Allie and Tyler ponder how far they'd go for a free vacation with the 2022 movie “The Invitation,” starring Nathalie Emmanuel and Thomas Doherty, written by Blair Butler and directed by Jessica M. Thompson. Listen as they discuss the film's oddly outdated idea of a modern woman, the surprisingly well done visual scares and the shocking amount of blood red flags waved by the main love interest. What shouldn't you do if you see a monster in the middle of the night? Tune in to find out! Special thanks to Mallory Johns for the introduction music. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE INVITATION (2022), currently playing on Netflix. Written by Blair Butler and directed by Jessica M. Thompson, the film follows Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel), a young woman who's recently lost her mother to cancer and who is grieving and feeling lost and rudderless without family. By some coincidence, she takes a test to find out more about her ancestry and is contacted by someone who says he is her cousin (Hugh Skinner). They meet and he convinces her to travel with him to England for a relative's wedding. There she meets the mysterious and alluring De Ville (Thomas Doherty) who she feels a magnetic pull towards but are things as they seem or is Evie embroiled in an extremely detrimental situation? The film has a run time of 1 h and 45 m and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. THE LIGHT OF THE MOON is the story of Bonnie, a young and successful Latina architect, sexually assaulted while walking home from an evening out with friends in Brooklyn. At first, she attempts to keep the assault a secret from her long-term boyfriend Matt, but the truth quickly emerges. Bonnie emphatically denies the impact of what has just happened to her. She fights to regain normalcy and control, but returning to her old life is more complicated than expected. Her attempt to recapture the intimacy she previously had with Matt falters and cracks begin to surface in their relationship. Another attack in the neighborhood only drives Bonnie further into denial, before an encounter with an at-risk woman forces her to face the truth and confront her own self-blame. Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Short Term 12) gives a powerful and moving performance as Bonnie, a woman who maintains her dignity and sense of humor as she deals with the aftermath of a life-altering experience. Written and directed by Emmy-nominated Australian filmmaker Jessica M. Thompson in her feature film debut, THE LIGHT OF THE MOON is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of relationships in the face of a tragedy.
