Send us a textFrom accidentally stealing the spotlight on David Letterman's show as a teenager to voicing beloved animated characters for two decades, James Urbaniak's acting journey reads like a masterclass in versatility and perseverance. In this wide-ranging conversation, Urbaniak reveals the unexpected path that took him from New Jersey community theater to New York's experimental off-off-Broadway scene in the late 1980s. With remarkable candor, he shares how challenging theatrical experiences—like performing a 75-minute solo monologue in "Tom Paine"—helped develop his craft before independent filmmaker Hal Hartley introduced him to the different demands of screen acting.Fans of Adult Swim's cult classic "The Venture Bros." will delight in Urbaniak's behind-the-scenes stories from his 20-year tenure voicing Dr. Rusty Venture and other characters. He recounts the surreal experience of having a makeup artist on the set of an HBO film tell him she was more excited to meet the voice of Dr. Venture than Al Pacino himself—a testament to the profound connection voice actors can forge with audiences.Urbaniak's philosophy of acting—describing himself as "a skeptic who likes to be surprised"—offers valuable insight into navigating the entertainment industry's inherent uncertainty. Whether discussing his brief but memorable appearance in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," his experience playing Robert Crumb in "American Splendor," or his current work on Apple TV+'s "Palm Royale," Urbaniak demonstrates why character actors are often the secret ingredient that elevates productions across all media. For aspiring actors, film buffs, animation fans, or anyone fascinated by the creative process, this conversation provides a rare glimpse into the life of a working actor who has successfully built a diverse career by embracing opportunities across multiple entertainment platforms.Support the show

Erik, Ben and Tim are all together to celebrate another 9/11 along with the less crazy but still wild three year anniversary of the podcast. Everyone made the mistake of listening to Ben and we wound up watching and talking 2006's bewildering Death of a President. We wade through an insanely twisty 96 minutes that left all us scratching our heads trying to figure out what the hell this movie is actually supposed to be about. We also talk Syria, Bush era derangement syndrome, Green Day. We marvel at James Urbaniak's show stealing bit part, do competing W impressions and end with not one but two big announcements about the future of the show. Neither involves us quitting, sorry to the haters and nothing but love for the rest of you xoxo

Get access to this entire episode as well as all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.Political reporter David Weigel joins to discuss the work of director Hal Hartley and his 1997 feature, 'Henry Fool'. The film, written and directed by one of the great undersung auteurs of American indie cinema during its heyday, blends a sense of sweeping literary scope with the understatedness of an indie comedy to tell a story about creativity, imperfect people, and the commercial forces that antagonize true outsider artistry. Henry Fool would become the first in a trilogy of films by Hartley, continuing with the 2006 riff on espionage thrillers, 'Fay Grim' and concluding in 2014 with the final installment 'Ned Rifle'.We begin with an examination of Hal Hartley, the unique alchemy of his work, and his debt to the films and filmmakers of the French New Wave. Then, we discuss 'Henry Fool' as a singular work of daring, frequently flying in the face of good taste, probing its audience's sense of morality, and asking us to find connection with a host of broken individuals who don't act in accordance with our own judgements. Finally, we look into the future and discuss Hartley's most recent (successful) attempts to get a new film off the ground and how a 2020's audience might receive a filmmaker who has always bucked commercial trends and swings for populist appeal.Follow David Weigel on Twitter.Subscribe to Semafor Newsletters....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

STEWART WADE From a young age, Stewart Wade knew he wanted to tell stories. He performed skits in the backyard for his captive parents and friends, and attempted his first novel at age ten. A bit later, Stewart tried his hand at poetry, short stories, and playwriting, ultimately getting a Master's degree in Theater, Film and Television from UCLA. After a few years in the Hollywood trenches, Stewart wrote and directed his first feature film, Coffee Date, starring Wilson Cruz, Jonathan Silverman, Sally Kirkland, Elaine Hendrix, Jason Stuart, and Debbie Gibson. The movie garnered numerous awards and received a limited theatrical release, ultimately playing in rotation for a year on MTV's LOGO channel. His next movie, Tru Loved, starred Najarra Townsend and Jake Abel, and featured Jasmine Guy, Alexandra Paul, Alec Mapa, Cynda Williams, Bruce Vilanch, Nichelle Nichols, Vernon Wells -- and Jane Lynch. It also won several awards before playing in rotation on Here!TV for many years. Next up, Stewart directed and co-produced Such Good People, a screwball comedy written by David Michael Barrett and starring Michael Urie, Randy Harrison, and James Urbaniak, with supporting roles by Scott Wolf, Ana Ortiz, Lance Bass, Alec Mapa, Tom Lenk, Drew Droege, and Rick Overton. At about this same time, Stewart created Coffee House Chronicles. William had the idea that he'd go into advertising because he could be artistic and make a living. But after a conversation with his best friend's dad, he decided to be in a band and pursue music. He was in a few bands and life took a different trajectory when he moved to L.A to start over. Because L.A. is where people get paid to be creative. He talks about fighting through decades of disappointments and his insecurities in the entertainment industry. Three bands later, with the help of a friend, he lands a production assistant job. One of Bill's first jobs in LA was as a P.A. (Production Assistant) for the directors of American Splendor for another movie that was narrated by James Urbaniak. Then he got quite a bit of work as an actor, during all this he started to learn about the movie business. He then made some short films, learning the lessons and thinking about who would be on his team if he made a feature film. But he really started directing and editing on Youtube and he produced, hosted and directed a vaudeville show. All the while he connected with the writer of what would become Dave Made A Maze, Steve Sears. While Bill talks he connects how he played as a child, is how he directs films. It's a great and fascinating story. He likes to make something cool with his friends, whether he's directing or not. He just enjoys the act of collaboration and creation and you can tell in Dave Made A Maze! Bill credits production designer, Trisha Gum, with much of the ‘mazification' of things like blood and how it was presented. And he explains that John Sumner is responsible for making all the puppets and that the most imaginative parts of the film were conceived of when production was all but complete. Bill had an opportunity with the Jim Henson Company and for a new Tremors film but those projects fell through. Let's see if we can convince him to try for a Dave Sequel. A very talented, versatile, and witty performer with more than 150 credit listings on IMDb, as an actor, today's guest James Urbaniak has brought to life such memorable characters as Dr. Venture on Adult Swim's The Venture Brothers, the scene-stealing Arthur (who was my favorite character) on Hulu's Difficult People, and Grant on Comedy Central's Review. Additionally, he's also a podcaster in his own right and the creator of the scripted shows Getting On With James Urbaniak, A Night Called Tomorrow, and I Will Never Lie to You. Reuniting with James for the first time since I was lucky enough to hang out with him in Los Angeles (which occurred shortly after we recorded the podcast's 150th episode devoted to actress Faye Dunaway), this time, James and I take a look at the fascinating life and career of the gifted yet today, largely overlooked filmmaker George Stevens. Analyzing the groundbreaking classic films GUNGA DIN, THE MORE THE MERRIER, A PLACE IN THE SUN, SHANE, and THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, in this eighty-minute episode, you'll hear us discuss not only the recurring themes and motifs we see throughout his oeuvre but also pay particular attention to key scenes, riveting performances, & memorable directorial choices that make them work so extraordinarily well. Hilary Brougher writes and directs films which blend the mechanics of original storytelling with gritty development of character. Through incisive dialogue; emotional harbingers of hope followed by inevitable glimpses of realism, Hilary's projects each carry with them a distinct piece of the era in which they were constructed. Growing up in Catskill, NY, she would frequent the cinema every week to catch a taste of the latest auteur to be featured, such as Fellini. Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, Gillian Armstrong and Jane Campion were among the filmmakers she admired into the 80's. She made her film debut as writer and director of The Sticky Fingers of Time (Terumi Matthews; Nicole Zaray; James Urbaniak), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1997. Shot on Super 16 in Williamsburg, the film captured the scent of the 1950's noir genre in unparalleled unique fashion and flair through the vein of time-travel, feeling stuck and reminiscing about the future. Her next feature film, Stephanie Daley, was developed at the Sundance Lab and starred Academy Award Winner Tilda Swinton and Amber Tamblyn in lead roles; the film portrayed themes of trauma, pregnancy and the search for truth fueled by heavy emotions and performances which followed suit. Timothy Hutton, Denis O'Hare, Melissa Leo and Jim Gaffigan support the storyline in masterful and different ways. Hilary won the Waldo Scott Screenplay Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and Best Director at the Milan International Film Festival; Stephanie Daley was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, while Tamblyn was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her gripping performance as the title character. Hilary then adapted Jane Mendelsohn's novel Innocence into a feature film of the same name, which starred Kelly Reilly, Sophie Lane Curtis, Sarita Choudhury and delved into the teen horror, vampire fiction genre. Her latest film, South Mountain, is a poetic expanse on life, liberty and morality through lens of masterful performances by Talia Balsam, Scott Cohen and Andrus Nichols. She worked with “Sticky Fingers” collaborator, cinematographer and husband, Ethan Mass, on the project, and displayed the craft she has continued to execute with charm throughout her illustrious career. She is Professor of Professional Practice in Film at Columbia University. It is called Unlicensed and we are about to play you the first episode. This is a project that is very close to my heart, and one that we have been working on for years. All twelve episodes of the first season are available right now only on Audible. There is a free trial, so feel free to use that to listen to it at audible.com/unlicensed. That said, I have spent the last two years listening to Audible Originals and here are a few personal recommendations if you want to keep exploring once you're there: Hot White Heist - A very queer, very funny heist story that's premise is too explicit for me to say here. Featuring more celebrity voices than I can list, it's the kind of show where Tony Kushner shows up as himself to give a 5 minute monologue on how he thinks the story is going so far. I Will Never Lie to You - A 70s road trip written by Brie Williams, frequent Night Vale writer and also writer on Unlicensed, along with James Urbaniak, of Venture Brothers and Night Vale, who also stars in it. A funny and sweet two hours of your time. Romance Road Test - Two real Brooklyn women and their real husbands try out real romantic advice in their relationships and record what happens. Everyone involved is candid and charming, and it's a lot of fun. I listened to this one in the car with my wife. Hear all episodes of Unlicensed and a bunch of other cool shows at audible.com/unlicensed.

From Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, creators of the genre defining fiction podcast Welcome to Night Vale, comes the new LA noire Unlicensed, starring Molly Quinn, Lusia Strus, and T.L Thompson. Coming November 10, only to Audible. Subscribe now here: https://www.audible.com/Unlicensed Unlicensed follows Molly Hatch (Quinn), recently divorced, two years sober, and completely lost on where to go next in her life. On a whim she answers an ad for an assistant to a PI, traveling to an unpromising strip mall on Citrus Avenue in Azusa, CA, where she meets Lou Rosen (Strus). Lou is a brilliant detective, but she's also a completely disorganized mess, both in her physical space and within her own mind. She loses evidence, forgets what she's already figured out, and she hasn't even gotten it together to get her PI license. Working illegally in the outskirts of Los Angeles, where the cul-de-sacs and strip malls sprawl into the desert, the only clients she can get are those who either can't afford anyone else or have cases that are too marginal for licensed PIs or the police to bother with. When a teenage girl pleads for Lou and Molly to take the strangest case of their career, they find themselves involved in something much bigger than they were prepared for. This unlikely pair, with no resources and no back-up, follow a trail of seemingly unconnected cases, which leads them to a ransom, a murder, a mysterious wellness center, and a conspiracy that might go all the way to the governor. Featuring guest appearances by Jason Segel, Janet Varney, James Urbaniak, Cecil Baldwin, Jasika Nicole, Mara Wilson, and more, Unlicensed is a deeply-human, captivating thriller set in the most uncool neighborhoods of America's coolest city.

The game is afoot! We're joined by the great Julie Klausner (Double Threat) to review two puzzling movies. Representing the arthouse, it's the 1973 dark comedy whodunnit The Last of Sheila, written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins, and featuring a cavalcade of stars. And representing the mainstream, it's David Fincher's The Game (1997) starring Michael Douglas. Plus we ask Julie the movie questions we've always wanted to ask her - John Waters, Jackie Brown, James Urbaniak, TCM, Star Wars, and more! A very talented, versatile, and witty performer with more than 150 credit listings on IMDb, as an actor, James Urbaniak has brought to life Dr. Venture on Adult Swim's The Venture Brothers, the scene-stealing Arthur (who was my favorite character) on Hulu's Difficult People, and Grant on Comedy Central's Review. Additionally, he's also a podcaster in his own right and the creator of the scripted shows Getting On With James Urbaniak, A Night Called Tomorrow, and I Will Never Lie to You.Returning for the first time since our fascinating and very fun Charles Laughton episode late last season where he gave me a crash course in the '30s era of the great British actor, it was so great to have him back this time to discuss a character actress of a different decade. In this, our 150th episode of Watch With Jen (yes, really!), we take a look at a woman who is synonymous with the 1970s, in the form of Faye Dunaway.Focusing on her tremendous turns in notable classics, we begin in the late '60s with Dunaway's breakout turn in Bonnie and Clyde, then move into the '70s with Chinatown, Three Days of the Condor, and Network, and finally wrap things up with the controversial Mommie Dearest in the early '80s, which she considers the end of an era. An engaging and research-filled episode full of great Urbaniak witticisms and observations, devotees of Dunaway, acting, and/or '70s cinema lovers won't want to miss this conversation.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: Kate Gabrielle (KateGabrielle.com)Originally Posted on Patreon (7/28/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/69704390

This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan offend approximately 1/7th of the world's population, which has historically gone very well. Ryan's love of fairy tale settings don't truck with Steve, who favors Disney's gritty, street-level crime drama Aladdin. Ryan gets vulnerable about the deterioration of his mental health in this dumpster fire world we have, and Steve, ever a good man and a good friend, reaches out. We encourage you to reach out too. Because everything sucks right now, and you need to connect with your fellow humans to survive. Also, this is the worst Disney princess ever. Aladdin (1992) - Disney d. Ron Clements, John Musker Starring: Scott Weinger Robin Williams Linda Larkin Jonathan Freeman Gilbert Gottfried When street rat Aladdin frees a genie from a lamp, he finds his wishes granted.
