This week on The Video Store Podcast, I'm recommending four offbeat cop films that have stuck with me over the years. These films can be funny, gritty, offbeat, and sometimes kind of chaotic in the best way possible. So what movies am I recommending?Running Scared (1986) – Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as two wisecracking Chicago detectives. This one's got a great mix of comedy and action, and it leans into that mid-80s buddy cop energy without taking itself too seriously. Michael McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” is on the soundtrack, which feels like a time capsule in itself.Miami Blues (1990) – Alec Baldwin in a role that's kind of hard to pin down. He plays a violent conman who ends up impersonating a cop. It's based on a Charles Willeford novel and keeps that oddball tone where you're not always sure if you're supposed to laugh or be disturbed. Fred Ward is great in it too, playing the worn-out detective trying to catch him.Freebie and the Bean (1974) – This one's messier than most cop movies, but it's intentional. Directed by Richard Rush, who also did The Stunt Man, it's full of reckless driving, dark humor, and strange tonal shifts. Alan Arkin and James Caan play the leads, and they're either chasing criminals or arguing with each other. It kind of laid the groundwork for a lot of buddy cop films that came later.Stakeout (1987) – Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez as partners on a surveillance detail that doesn't stay professional for very long. There's a good balance of suspense and comedy, and Madeleine Stowe holds her own in her first major role. It was directed by John Badham, who also did WarGames and Short Circuit, so the pacing is solid. If you're in the mood for movies where different type of cops break rules, hunt odd suspects or drive their car on the track of an elevated train, I think you will find something here you will like. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Happy Valentine's Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared. Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams' eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010. We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don't, and the lasting effect many of Hyams' films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers. There's much talk about Hyams' ability as a cinematographer, and how rare it is to be a director that films their own movies.  Mike makes the case that 2010 is more watchable than 2001: A Space Odyssey, Conor attempts to get over how corrupt Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines are as cops in Running Scared, and Dan sings the praises of Hyams' Narrow Margin. There's extended conversation about Robert Blake, co-star of Hyams' debut Busting, an appreciation of director John Badham (specifically Blue Thunder), and a reflection on the enormity of the production of End of Days.

Dave's pick this week is the family comedy sci-fi adventure, Short Circuit from 1986. Short Circuit was a collaborative effort that blended innovative special effects with a light-hearted, family-friendly narrative. Directed by John Badham, the film tells the story of a military robot, Number 5, who gains sentience after being struck by lightning. The production was notable for its advanced use of robotics and puppetry to bring the character of Number 5 to life. Special effects supervisor Syd Mead, who had previously worked on films like "Blade Runner" and "Tron," was instrumental in designing the robot, creating a character that was both mechanically believable and endearing. The use of practical effects and on-set puppetry, operated by a team of puppeteers, gave Number 5 a lifelike presence that CGI could not have achieved at the time. Filming took place in various locations around Oregon, including Astoria and the Columbia River Gorge, which provided picturesque and diverse backdrops for the movie's action and comedic sequences. The cast, featuring Ally Sheedy as Stephanie Speck and Steve Guttenberg as Newton Crosby, brought warmth and humor to the story, further enhanced by the chemistry between the human characters and the robotic protagonist. The production faced challenges, such as ensuring the robot's functionality and coordinating complex scenes involving the animatronics, but the crew's dedication paid off. "Short Circuit" was well-received upon its release, praised for its charming story, groundbreaking special effects, and the memorable character of Number 5, which quickly became a cultural icon of the 1980s. Escaping from the military facility, Number 5 finds refuge with Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy), an animal-loving young woman who initially mistakes him for an alien. As Stephanie helps Number 5 understand the world and the concept of life, they form a bond, while the robot's creators, including Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), and the military, led by the determined Captain Skroeder, are on a relentless quest to retrieve him. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

In this Episode: In this episode, our heroes discuss the 1986 film "Short Circuit," examining its portrayal of robotics, artificial intelligence, and stereotypes. The charm of the movie, the problematic aspects of Fisher Stevens' portrayal of an Indian character, and the memorable one-liners are explored. Despite the offensive elements, Stevens' effort and the nerdy, idiotic nature of the characters are acknowledged. We also touch on the film's cultural context and its relevance to current advancements in AI. The character of Stephanie, her unusual snack truck business, the impressive special effects and design of the robot Johnny Five, and the comedic and slapstick elements are highlighted. The filming location in Astoria, Oregon, and the nostalgic charm of the movie are also mentioned. Other random topics include the weapons of mass destruction in the movie, Chinese car rip-offs, the actors, and the serving robots. "Short Circuit" is a charming and sweet 80s movie worth watching despite some dated elements. The film follows Johnny Five, a military robot who gains sentience and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Today on Too Opinionated, we talk with actor/author Stev Guttenberg about his new book, Time to Thank: Caregiving for my Hero.  Guttenberg made his acting debut in The Boys From Brazil with Laurence Olivier and Gregory Peck. From that recognition, he attracted a variety of leading roles including the film classic Diner(1983), which was chosen by Vanity Fair as the Best Film of the Last Thirty Years, and the broad comedy, Police Academy(1984) which continues to be one of the highest earning film franchises ever. in 1985 Guttenberg's fame increased with Cocoon, a life affirming film of the highest order. The science fiction genre continued with Short Circuit(1986), John Badham's ground breaking artificial intelligence film. Steve worked opposite Isabelle Hupert in Curtis Hansen's Bedroom Window(1986), the heralded Hitchcockian thriller, In 1987, Disney released Three Men and a Baby, Leonard Nimoys popular movie about bachelors raising a child. The film went on to announce itself as the number one grossing film of the year ,and provided a successful sequel.  He has produced an Emmy nominated television special, Gangs, performed in the original Miracle On Ice, and also ABC's The Day After, still one of the most watched television events of this century. Steve has written The Guttenberg Bible, a comedic account of his first ten years in the film industry, and The Kids from DISCO, a superhero children's book relating a story about his nieces and nephews. He guested on Veronica Mars, Party Down, Community and Law and Order,(as every N.Y. actor should). Guttenberg has the record for most original films to go to franchises in film history, and appearing in the most films in The Screen Actors Guild from 1980-1990 tying Gene Hackman. It's Die Hard in real time! The ticking clocks are everywhere (and so are the dodgy Christopher Walken impressions) as Phil and Liam discuss the 1995 high-concept thriller Nick of Time!  Mild-mannered accountant Gene Watson (Johnny Depp) arrives via train to LA's union station, with his young daughter Lynn in tow. Shortly after his arrival, he is apprehended by Mr. Smith (Christopher Walken) and Ms. Jones (Roma Maffia), who claim to be police officers. Smith then informs Gene that he has 90 minutes to assassinate the visiting Governor of California (Marsha Mason)…or they will kill his daughter. The guys discuss the potency of this compelling premise and unpack where the movie both succeeds and fails in the execution of its concept. They theorize that, not only is the film filled with ‘Die Hard DNA', but it also has its roots in Hitchcock, and the paranoid political thrillers of the 1970s. They offer their thoughts on the movie's own political point of view, its thematic ideas, and the intentions of director John Badham. We also get a glimpse into what really goes on inside Phil's secret ‘Die Hard on a Blank laboratory' (where his precious Blu-rays are kept into a fortified vault, protected by a time-lock).As they break down ‘the anatomy of an action movie', the boys discuss the unusual yet largely effective casting of Johnny Depp as a straight-laced everyman, rhapsodize over Christopher Walken's terrifying performance as the satanically evil bad guy ‘Mr. Smith', and talk about the rest of the supporting cast, that also includes the likes of Charles S. Dutton, Clark Johnson, Yul Vasquez and G.D. Spradlin. As the clocks tick down, the fellas race over to the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to hand out their action movie awards, and complete the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz…in the nick of time!NICK OF TIME trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cP1TllLDgQAt the time of release, NICK OF TIME is streaming on Hoopla and PlutoTV and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu, AMC On Demand and all the usual platforms!AMERICAN ENGLISH SOCCER PODCASThttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1652062 EYE OF THE DUCK PODCASThttps://eyeoftheduckpod.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this episode of Outside the Cinema, Bill and Chris review the movies Blue Thunder and Lisa and the Devil. They discuss the weather and the start of baseball season. They also talk about the director John Badham and his filmography. The conversation touches on the low-key racism and sexism in Blue Thunder. The plot of the movie is summarized, and the technology used in the film, including the microphones. They also discuss the plot, the real stunts and action sequences, and the memorable 80s score.  In Lisa and the Devil, they talk about the confusing plot and the dream-like atmosphere. They highlight the failures of the screenplay in creating a cohesive and interesting story. The hosts discuss the visual style of Mario Bava and the lack of story in 'Lisa and the Devil'.  Takeaways The director John Badham has directed several notable films, including Saturday Night Fever and War Games. Blue Thunder is a prototypical eighties action movie, with a focus on technology and a cool helicopter. The movie features low-key racism and sexism, which was common in films of that era. The microphones used in the film are not realistic, but they serve the purpose of the story. Blue Thunder is an entertaining film that showcases the talent of the director and the actors.

Today on the show we have legendary actor Lance Henriksen. I had the pleasure of work with Lance on my film Red Princess Blues: Genesis and if was a surreal experience.Lance has been in over 300 films through-out his remarkable career. He's mentored Tarzan, Evel Knievel and the Antichrist, and fought Terminators, Aliens, Predators, Pumpkinhead, Pinhead, Bigfoot, Superman, the Autobots, Mr. T, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. He's worked with directors James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Sidney Lumet, Francois Truffaut, John Huston, Walter Hill, David Fincher, John Woo, Jim Jarmusch and Sam Raimi, but this is just skimming the surface. An intense, versatile actor as adept at playing clean-cut FBI agents as he is psychotic motorcycle-gang leaders, who can go from portraying soulless, murderous vampires to burned-out, world-weary homicide detectives, Lance Henriksen has starred in a variety of films that have allowed him to stretch his talents just about as far as an actor could possibly hope.He played Awful Knoffel in the TNT original movie EVIL KNIEVEL, directed by John Badham and executive produced by Mel Gibson. Henriksen portrayed Awful Knoffel in this project based on the life of the famed daredevil, played by George Eads. Henriksen starred for three seasons (1996-1999) on Millennium, Fox-TV's critically acclaimed series created by Chris Carter (The X-Files).His performance as Frank Black, a retired FBI agent who has the ability to get inside the minds of killers, landed him three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for "Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Drama Series" and a People's Choice Award nomination for "Favorite New TV Male Star."Henriksen was born in New York City. His mother, Margueritte, was a waitress, dance instructor, and model. His father, James Marin Henriksen, who was from Tønsberg, Norway, was a boxer and merchant sailor.Henriksen studied at the Actors Studio and began his career off-Broadway in Eugene O'Neill's Three Plays of the Sea. One of his first film appearances was as an FBI agent in Sidney Lumet's DOG DAY AFTERNOON, followed by parts in Lumet's NETWORK and PRINCE OF THE CITY.He then appeared in Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND with Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut, DAMIEN: OMEN II and in Philip Kaufman's THE RIGHT STUFF, in which he played Mercury astronaut Capt. Wally Schirra.James Cameron cast Henriksen in his first directorial effort, PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING, then used him again in THE TERMINATOR and as the android Bishop in the sci-fi classic ALIENS. Sam Raimi cast Henriksen as an outrageously garbed gunfighter in his quirky western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. Henriksen has also appeared in what has developed into a cult classic: Kathryn Bigelow's NEAR DARK, in which he plays the head of a clan of murderous redneck vampires. He was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in the TNT original film THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT.In addition to his abilities as an actor, Henriksen is an accomplished painter and potter. His talent as a ceramist has enabled him to create some of the most unusual ceramic artworks available on the art market today. His new film is called Alpha Rift.Nolan Parthmore was just a regular guy, hanging with friends, working his game store, flirting with his co-worker, then one day, destiny came calling. A courier delivers a mysterious antique helmet with no note or description. When Nolan puts it on, his whole world changes. The helmet comes to life and calls out to an evil demon, Lord Dragsmere, who was imprisoned by Nolan's deceased father. Nolan soon discovers he is next in the bloodline, heir to The Nobleman, destined to become a hero whether he wants to be or not. Since the Dark Ages, the Noblemen have been guardians against the 13 Devil's Apostles: dark forces escaped from hell and let loose upon on earth. Generations later, it's the heirs of these original knights that possess the power to open the Alpha Rift:the only defense against these supernatural foes.Enjoy my conversation with Lance Henriksen.
