This week, Lance and Joe tackled the very important role on the Sabres of fourth line center. With Riley Sheahan back in the fold for another year, the field for the job got slightly clearer. At least they thought so. It's an August NHL tradition to dig deep on minutiae and that's the Maintenance Day guarantee. The guys also talk about fourth liners of the recent past as old friend Johan Larsson returns to Sweden, Cody Eakin still awaits a deal, and do they really want Zemgus to be the 4C?Hey, there's a World Junior Championship going on now! That means Isak Rosen and Jiri Kulich (among a couple other Sabres prospects) are getting to show off their skills and that means the guys are talking about them. Thanks as always for listening and thank you even more for the positive ratings and feedback. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
Happy Friday. Yes, it's now mid-August but the content NEVER sleeps. (I also apologize for the meh audio today, the mic spazzed out for some reason). Hunter starts the show by discussing what a contract extension looks like for Jake Guentzel. Yes, he's still two years away from becoming a UFA but that will fly by. He looks at Filip Forsberg as a comp since they're right around the same age (though Forsberg came into the league a bit quicker than Guentzel did. He gives his rough estimate of what the Penguins would likely pay him, and he tries to give a number that the Penguins could refuse (it would be very hard for them to do that). He also does point out the risk in those sorts of deals before pivoting to Johan Larsson leaving for Sweden. Hunter touches on why a deal with the Penguins was likely nixed before looking up Larsson's numbers and being confused as to how no team wanted to give him anything. Finally, Hunter ends the show by catching up with a few Penguin players playing in "Da Beauty League" in Minnesota as it's a summer league for a great cause. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
Is Johan Larsson going to be a Pittsburgh Penguin? There was nothing new to report on that front on Thursday, which has led Hunter to believe that he won't be signing. That said, Hunter does look at what he would bring to the Penguins lineup if he does get signed. He looks at his defensive ability and how he clogs up the defensive zone, plus looks at what he's produced at throughout his career. He then looks at what line he'd fit best on before moving on to some updates on a potential defenseman trade. Hunter brings up that the Penguins HAVE TO get an impact forward in return, preferably a finisher since this team hasn't done much to replace some of the goals that were scored last year. Which defenseman would bring the most back in a trade? He looks at a few different trade scenarios and then makes a bold prediction about how many defensemen will be moved out. Finally, Hunter does a quick look at the "way too early" lines for next season and what he would do if he were Mike Sullivan (it has the defensive pairings in if both MP28 and Marino are moved). What a last 24 hours for the Pittsburgh Penguins! Hunter starts the show with the obvious: The Evgeni Malkin contract! He goes into how good it is for the short-term and how the Penguins made the right choice in bringing him back, especially when you look at some of the other centers that signed for big money. He also looks at how you're going to see a motivated player who wants to prove a lot of people wrong, plus looks at the role Sidney Crosby played to get the two sides talking again. He also looks at how this move is what most of the fans wanted when all three came into the league: To go out together, even if they don't win another Stanley Cup. He also takes a shot at the people who will be miserable about this if they don't win before going into the Jan Rutta signing. Hunter looks at the data and analyzes his game to see what he's going to bring to the lineup next year. Which defenseman would he be best with? Which defenseman is going to be traded? Hunter looks at what the team must get in return for one of those players since the forward group isn't fully filled out yet. Finally, Hunter ends the show looking at the depth signings and wondering if Johan Larsson is going to be a Pittsburgh Penguin soon. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! A special weekend edition, with Garnet Hathaway, Nic Dowd, and Johan Larsson chatting with John on the road trip this week. Caps fly home today, host Toronto Sunday.
We know it's not the offseason yet, but listen, we got a jump on it last week and dang it we're going to keep it going. But first.. Trevor Zegras's latest lacrosse-style goal got Coyotes color commentator a little hot under the collar and... come on, isn't it time to stop being annoyed at the talented guys (2:00)?As for the Sabres, they honored Rick Jeanneret with a banner in the rafters and it was extremely cool to see and heartwarming and... is this a turnaround moment for the franchise? Hmm... (13:00)If things have turned the corner, that makes next season fascinating because the weight of expectations will return with a vengeance and boy that skews how we view things now doesn't it (19:45)?Did you know Rasmus Asplund is the new Johan Larsson and (maybe!) better? Well, now you can think about that possibility (32:00).After a few false starts, the real Victor Olofsson is back (for really real this time!) and that changes the perspective on what to do with him (41:00).It's not a new episode without having more goalie talk and Lance and Joe break out the Worst Case Scenario for Buffalo in regards to Devon Levi and Erik Portillo (48:30). The guys wrap up the week thinking about previous GM faux pas and general roster mismanagement. The classics never die. Thanks for listening (and if you read this, you've won our thanks and admiration).
