We start the show with some insane comebacks in last night's NHL slate. The Carolina Hurricanes scored 3 goals in the final two minutes against Utah to win 5-4 in regulation. The Edmonton Oilers also had a massive comeback overcoming a 3-0 deficit in the third to beat San Jose 4-3 in overtime.Macklin Celebrini waved off the referee on a high-sticking penalty he drew in the second period of their game. The penalty wasn't overturned but Gregs and Rupper think this gave him a lot of credibility around the league. Edmonton's win marks the first three-game win streak this season. Crazy to think they're tied with Vegas on points atop the Pacific with no major win streaks. The guys look at all the loser points from games that go to overtime and some rules that could help the overtime, so more games don't go all the way to a shootout. Janaury has set the NHL record for the most hat tricks in a month in NHL history. Alex Tuch had a hat trick last night for the Buffalo Sabres as Alex Lyon picked up his 10th straight win for the streaking Sabres as they beat LA 4-1. What could the Sabres do at the trade deadline?Gregor and Rupp both think the Toronto Maple Leafs playoff hopes are DONE. What's next for the Maple Leafs? The Florida Panthers are another team that made the playoffs last year that are still looking on from the outside. Aleksander Barkov isn't back yet and Sergei Bobrovsky has been struggling. Are the two-time defending champs in danger of missing the playoffs? The Colorado Avalanche are in a rut right now and with plenty of players going to the Olympics and a condensed schedule after the break. Gregor thinks the Avs need some more size on their backend and Rupper looks at their lack of powerplay success.Florida and Colorado both have multiple players going to the Olympics but very condensed schedules after the break. Are the Panthers schedule concerns a dagger to their playoff chances?Patrick Kane broke Mike Modano's record for the most points by an American-born player. Gregor and Rupp rip on the American-born versus American points leader records.Pat joins the show for another edition of Fillin the Blank:_____ is the most likely to beat the Colorado Avalanche to win the Western Conference_____ could usurp Nathan MacKinnon for the RocketAt -500 to make the playoffs and +350 to not make it, the Buffalo Sabres ______ the playoffsBuffalo, Detroit, Montreal, and Anaheim highlight some fanbases the guys think would be electric atmospheres for home playoff series with their droughts. You can get involved with all the NHL futures action over on bet365 by using the promo code NATION at bet365.comConnect with us on ⬇️TwitterInstagramWebsiteDaily Faceoff Merch Hosted on Acast. The Edmonton Oilers made history with back-to-back hat tricks by defencemen; Bouchard and then Ekholm, the former now sits among the league’s top-scoring blueliners, after a typically slow start to the season. In Toronto, William Nylander was fined $5,000 for an ill-advised gesture toward a TV camera, a minor distraction but not enough to hide the Leafs’ returning inconsistency, raising questions about whether Brad Treliving needs to make a move with the Olympic break looming. Buffalo continues its surprising surge behind the league’s hottest goalie, Alex Lyon, forcing tough decisions on players like Alex Tuch as playoff hopes feel real for the first time in years. Winnipeg’s playoff fight hit another low after a 5–1 loss to Detroit, prompting a harsh postgame from Scott Arniel and renewed debate about whether the Jets should re-tool on the fly. The New York Rangers’ problems deepened with an 8–4 loss to Ottawa, their fifth straight defeat and 30 goals against, with J.T. Restless fans at MSG are surely being heard by owner James Dolan, with Artemi Panarin’s expiring deal looming large. In New Jersey, Tom Fitzgerald owned the Devils’ struggles before an OT win over Seattle, a small but possible wake-up call as trade speculation around Dougie Hamilton continues. The Red Wings are still winning — but the path hasn't been clean. In this extended episode of Red Wings Rant, we break down a critical stretch that includes back-to-back losses to Pittsburgh, a controversial but important win over Ottawa, and what those games reveal about where Detroit actually stands. The Wings were thoroughly out-chanced against the Penguins at five-on-five, posting just a 38.4% expected-goals share. Against Ottawa, they flipped the script on the scoreboard — despite MoneyPuck giving them only a 27% chance to win — by capitalizing on mistakes, special teams, and timely goaltending. That contrast leads to the real question: not “is it sustainable?” — but how good teams find ways to survive when they don't have their best game. We dig into: Why Detroit's underlying numbers vs. Pittsburgh are more concerning than the final scores • Todd McLellan's blunt assessment of what went wrong — and what must improve • Why Ottawa was the perfect “response test” opponent • What winning ugly actually tells us about structure, goaltending, and maturity • Growing concerns around the top line of Larkin, Raymond, and Emmitt Finnie • Whether Finnie's stamina is catching up and if it's time for a new look • Marco Kasper's role — and whether a reset in Grand Rapids makes sense • Andrew Copp's December surge as Detroit's unsung stabilizer • How Moritz Seider's all-around impact continues to anchor this team • Trade deadline pressure and why Detroit should be part of impact conversations • Two potential fits if the Wings choose to be aggressive: Alex Tuch and Justin Faulk • Why Heated Rivalry matters for hockey culture — and why this conversation belongs in the sport right now Red Wings Rant: Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings finally have a home.  JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let's have fun! Welcome to the DFO Rundown with Jason Gregor and Mike Rupp! The Buffalo Sabres have a four-game winning streak, a new GM, and now sit five points out of a playoff spot with a game in hand. Rupper thinks a playoff push would be detrimental in Buffalo, while Gregor believes they have some good pieces and are better than their record suggests. Do they go the San Jose route and rebuild, or the Nashville route and re-tool with veterans? Can Jarmo Kekäläinen change the culture in Buffalo and get the Sabres back into the playoffs soon?Sitting third in points behind Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon, has Macklin Celebrini punched his ticket to Team Canada? He currently has San Jose in a playoff spot, and the guys believe he would be the Hart Trophy winner if the Sharks make the postseason this year. Can the second-year forward beat out the likes of McDavid and MacKinnon for the award?John Klingberg is enjoying a career resurgence with the Sharks this season. His mobility looks closer to his prime years, and his offensive game is starting to shine alongside San Jose's young core. A physical and mental reset has allowed Klingberg to flash the star form he once showed in Dallas.Connor McDavid's hot streak is in full steam ahead. The Oilers captain has 14 points in his last five games, and any rumblings that McDavid had fallen off have quickly faded. Once again, he's proving he's arguably the best player in the world.Rupper recounts his time in Pittsburgh, where Sidney Crosby was constantly striving to improve—even after winning the Stanley Cup. Taking more faceoffs, improving defensively, shooting more, and doing anything possible to become a more complete, big-moment player.Nathan MacKinnon continues his shooting barrage as he leads the league in shots on goal. McDavid has seen an uptick in shooting during his hot streak, and Celebrini is climbing the list as well. The guys examine some of the league's top volume shooters and a few surprise leaders in shooting percentage, including one of the biggest up-and-comers in the scoring race, Morgan Geekie.Edmonton's offense is starting to roll as they head into the Christmas break, with no more road games against Eastern Conference teams remaining. With Tristan Jarry injured, is there renewed concern in the Oilers' crease, and what will they do if he's out long-term?Pat joins the show for Fill in the Blank:The percent chance Alex Tuch stays in Buffalo is ___The Minnesota Wild are missing ___ to truly become a top contenderThe team to win the regular season in the East will be ___Olympic roster predictions are in from Rupper and Gregor, starting with Rupp's Team USA selections. Cole Caufield is out, while Brock Nelson makes the roster up front. Despite his season in Anaheim, Cutter Gauthier was never in consideration for Rupp. There are no changes on defense, and while Seth Jones was strongly considered, Rupp couldn't find a spot for him. With Connor Bedard injured, Gregor slots Brandon Hagel in as his replacement. Would Bo Horvat be on the roster if he weren't injured? Evan Bouchard's improved defensive play earns him a spot, while Thomas Harley drops off as he continues to struggle after returning from injury in Dallas. Jordan Binnington remains on Gregor's roster based on merit and his Four Nations performance—but could his poor NHL play push him off the team by February?Want to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team?
